Judith K. Erfft
CENTER POINT - Judith K. Erfft, 57, of Center Point, died at 11:20 a.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004, in St. Vincent Clay Hospital following complications from cancer. She had last worked as a shift manager for Burger King in Brazil, and also had worked for Columbia Records, Riley Custom Meats and had managed L&K; Restaurant. She was born Nov. 14, 1946, in West Terre Haute, to Leo and Louise Hedden LeClercq. Survivors include her mother, Louise Topolski of Terre Haute, her husband, Paul Erfft, whom she married
Dec. 18, 1964, of Center Point; four brothers, Leo LeClercq, Floyd LeClercq and wife Sherry, and Daniel LeClercq and wife Wendy, all of Terre Haute, and David LeClercq and wife Sally of North Port, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Robert Harkness of Terre Haute; two adopted grandchildren, Jayci Bryan and Haley Bryan; and many nieces and nephews and other extended family. She was preceded in death by her father; and one sister, Eva Harkness. She attended Valley High School and West Vigo High School. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Terre Haute. She enjoyed bowling, boating and camping. She was a loving wife and a wonderful aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in French Funeral Home in Brazil, with Connie Kramer officiating. Burial will follow in Center Point cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. to services Wednesday in the funeral home. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Vista Care Hospice, with envelopes available in the funeral home.
Norma Jean Bland
Norma Jean Bland, 78, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, August 1, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was a retired housekeeper at Union Hospital. She was born on May 29, 1926, in Vigo County to Linus Fillieo and Margaret Bryant Fillieo. Her husband, Murl G. Bland, preceded her in death in 1985. She is survived by her children, Elaine Williams of Terre Haute, Steven Bland of Albany, Ga., Jackie Lee Bland of Terre Haute, Patricia Ann Bland of Terre Haute and Joseph Wayne Bland of Terre Haute; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Ann Peterson of Dawson, Ga. She also was preceded in death by her parents. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Friday in New Harmony cemetery. Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Martin J. Cavanaugh Jr.
Martin "Marty" J. Cavanaugh Jr., 82, of Greenwood and formerly of Terre Haute, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. He was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Terre Haute to Martin J. Cavanaugh and Julia Dede Cavanaugh. He married
Kathleen Manion on Jan. 2, 1946, and she survives. He is also survived by one brother, John Cavanaugh of Wilmington, Del. Services are 10 a.m. today in Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church, with Monsignor Knueven officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery in Indianapolis.
Phil D. Curts
Phil D. Curts, 82, of Terre Haute, died at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, in his residence. He was a retired printer for the Tribune-Star. He was born March 8, 1922, in Catlin to Charles E. Curts and Mattie McNary Curts. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Jennings Curts, whom he married
on Oct. 27, 1987; a daughter, Vicki Curts of Terre Haute; a son, Stephen Curts of Rockville, and his longtime companion, Betty Jones, of Montezuma; three stepdaughters, Janet Oxford and her husband Larry of Dalton, Ga., Linda Burger and her husband Don of Terre Haute and Helen Seifert and her husband Joe Brinker of West Lafayette; two stepsons, John P. Seifert and his wife Debbie of Terre Haute and David Seifert of New York City; three grandchildren, six step grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and a niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Dorothy Curts, in 1982. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in four campaigns in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a life member of the 94th Infantry Division of Patton's Third Army, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He and his wife, Lynn, attended Christ Community Church in Brazil. He was a contributor to several charities, including House of Hope in Brazil, Doctors Without Borders and Wycliff Bible Translators. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Sunday in Christ Community Church in Brazil, with Pastor Tim Russell officiating. Cremation has been scheduled. Wilbur McIntosh
Wilbur "Mac" McIntosh, M.D., 83, of Riley, died at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, in his residence. He practiced medicine for 50 years in Riley. He was born in Clay County on Feb. 24, 1921, to William McIntosh and Ruth Lee McIntosh. Survivors include his wife, Linda J. McIntosh; two sons, Rusty McIntosh and his wife Hatsumi and Bill McIntosh and his wife Judi; two daughters, Trudy Cooper and her husband David and Brenda Rector and her husband Randy; two stepsons, Patrick Kotter and his wife Renee and Tom Kotter and his wife Penni; one stepdaughter, Susan Stroot and her husband Chris; 19 grandchildren, Brett, Chet, Lela, Troy, Trent, Dusty, Darci, Casey, Randa, Mandi, Brent, Jacob, Cane, Sara, Lindsay, Lindsey, Ashleigh, Caitlin and Josh; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Harold McIntosh. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine. He was a board member of Blue Shield of Indiana and an original board member of Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He also was a member of the Indiana State Medical Association, Aescalapean Medical Society, Elks Lodge of Sullivan, Riley Masonic Lodge 390 Free and Accepted Masons, and Zorah
Shrine. He started the first 24 hour ambulance service in Vigo County. He was awarded a Sagamore of The Wabash. He loved being a doctor, and loved gardening and farming. He was a hunter, and he was active in Republican politics. Services are 11 a.m. Friday in DeBaun Funeral Home Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Rick May officiating. Burial is in Oak Hill cemetery, with military gravesite rites by Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 972. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vista Care Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.
Selena Russell
Selena Russell, 73, of Terre Haute, died at 1:45 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was a homemaker. She was born Sept. 28, 1930, in Paducah, Ky., to William Hale and Sadie Corine Thomas Hale. Her former husband, Hayse Russell Sr., died Jan. 28, 2003. Surviving are four children, Consuelo Russell, Hayse Russell Jr., and Gloria Jean Russell, all of Terre Haute, and Linda Kay Scott and her husband L. C. Scott of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Mary Ross of Louisville, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Brian Keith Russell and wife Nicole, Darell Lee Owens and wife Emily, Brenton W. Russell, Bettina Yovone Sibley, Angela Jean Tompkins and husband James, Corey Russell and Mica Lynn Scott; five great-grandchildren, Anthony Cherry, Joshua Tompkins, Jada Tompkins, Chloe Russell and Cheyenne Russell, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was a member of Church of Christ at 23rd and Locust Streets and was a loving mother and grandmother, who was a "one of a kind person." She also enjoyed gardening and working outdoors. Betty L. Stevens
Betty L. Stevens, 74, of Terre Haute, died at 12:35 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. She had been currently employed at Knights Inn for the past 10 years as a hostess, and had previously worked at the Vigo County Home for 14 years. She was born on Dec. 8, 1929, in Terre Haute to Everett Long and Edna Bell Long. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett E. Stevens, who died on Oct. 23, 2003. She is survived by five sons, Ronnie Long of California, Frank Culter and his wife Naomi of Illinois, Charles Russell of Tennessee, Steven Gulley and his wife Sue of Seelyville and Mark Gulley of Terre Haute; seven daughters, Claudia Sue Hollingsworth of Oregon, Elizabeth Albright of Roselawn, Vicki Perrigin of Tennessee, Candace Norman and her husband Don of Montezuma, Terri Lynn Gulley, Jayme Collins, Dawna Hoffman and her husband Dennis, all of Terre Haute; one stepdaughter, Barbara Jean Crowe and her husband Jim of Illinois; one brother, Kenny Long and his wife Nadine of Terre Haute; two sisters-in-law, Beluah "Skip" McCabe and Donna Long, both of Terre Haute; two sisters, Dora Hoppingarner of Terre Haute and Martha Maxey of Texas; brothers-in-law, Michael Felix and Robert Norris, both of Terre Haute and Robert Howard of St. Louis; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Mose Gulley; three brothers, James, William and Everett Long; four sisters, Shirley Felix, Barbara Norris, Freda Walker and Blanch Howard. Genevieve L. Black
Genevieve L. Black, 87, of Terre Haute died at 2:10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was born Oct. 18, 1916, in Pleasant Hill, Ill. Her husband, H. Kenneth Black, died Nov. 6, 2000. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen A. and Natalya Black and Leland H. and Barbara Black, all of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Jason Black, Aaron Black and Andrea Black; one step grandchild, Roman Komnev; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Velmer Horner and Rosalie Martin Horner. She was raised and educated in St. Louis before moving to Terre Haute and was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and Chapter K of P.E.O. She was a past president of Indiana State University Wives and was a former board member of the Crittenden Home. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home at 605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. Rob Murray officiating. Entombment is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. Frank Joseph Miller, 70, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was born Oct. 2, 1933, in Terre Haute to Frank Miller and Margaret Miller. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandy Miller. Survivors include his daughter, Rena Kay Miller; and five brothers, Robert Miller, John W. Miller, Edward Miller, Donald Miller and Ronald Miller. James Lewis Preston, 90, of West Terre Haute, died at 6:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in Terre Haute. He had worked as a self - employed farmer. He was born Feb. 19, 1914, in Sanford to Ervin Preston and Dicy Vermillion Preston. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene. Survivors include one son, Jim Preston of West Terre Haute; two daughters, Barbara O'Neil of Goodyear, Ariz., and Patty Reese and her husband Gene of Avon; one son-in-law, Jack Pope of Prairie Creek; 12 grandchildren, Randy Pope, Teresa Camarino, Marsha Ash, Bill Reese, Tom Reese, Mike Reese, Kevin O'Neil, Lori Frey, Kristie Preston, Kathryn Preston, Rebecca Preston and Jamie Crowe; 17 great-grandchildren, Cassie, Curtis, Rick, Chad, Leslie, Amber, Ashleigh, Derrick, Chelsea, Nicole, Devin, Seth, Luke, Emma, Jacob, Joshua and Mackenzie; and several nieces and nephews. Alecia Gaston Connelly Forrest
Alecia Gaston Connelly Forrest, 86, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and formerly of Terre Haute, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in Wheeling Hospital. She was born July 18, 1918, in Terre Haute, a daughter of the late Warner and Pearl Marie Hutchinson. She was a retired secretary for Belmont National Bank Trust Department. Alecia was a member and former children's choir director for Calvary Presbyterian Church of St. Clairsville. She also was a member of the Hilltop Garden Club and the Child Study Club of St. Clairsville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Edwin E. Gaston, and her second husband, W. Ben Connelly. Surviving are her husband Leland "Lee" Forrest; two sons, Stephen and his wife Sylvia Gaston, of Grove City, Ohio, and Bill Connelly of Cincinnati; two daughters, Gay Gaston Drumm and her husband Mel of Madison, Conn., and Ellen Connelly Hamilton and her husband Ralph of Belmont, Ohio; two sisters, Pauline Hutchinson of Fort Myers, Fla., and Marcella Hill of Lancaster, Pa.; six grandchildren, Amy Clarke, Jim Browning, Rachel Gaston, Eve Smith, Ben Connelly and Annelise Connelly; and a great-granddaughter, Chelsea Browning. Reseda Y. 'Rae' Moon
BRAZIL - Reseda Y. "Rae" Moon, 87, of Brazil, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, in the presence of her family in Bethesda Gardens. She was a nurse. She was born April 23, 1917, in Port Edwards, Wis., to William Yusten and Mary Drummer Yusten. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles E. Moon. Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn J. Howerton of Terre Haute; two sons, Mark A. Moon and his wife Nancy of Jupiter, Fla., and Michael C. Moon and his wife Kathy of Stuart, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey Howerton, Debbie Howerton, Travis Moon, Garrett Moon, Peyton Moon, Charles Moon, Christin Moon, Cody Moon and Michelle Reed; four great-grandchildren, Josh Howerton, Matthew Howerton, Emma Reed and Mark Reed; and other extended family. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and several siblings. She was a graduate of Luther Hospital School of Nursing, and later worked at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, where she met and married
her late husband, Dr. Moon. They relocated to the Center Point and Brazil area where he established his medical practice. She was a member of the Brazil Women's Golf Association, Tri Kappa and the First Presbyterian Church Women's Circle. She was a very talented and creative lady, and had mastered the art of stained glass, hand quilting and sewing. She was well known for her Halloween costumes and sewing talent. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Center Point cemetery. French Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
