Julia Werneke Deem
GREENCASTLE - Julia Werneke Deem, 91, of Greencastle, died at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in Asbury Towers Healthcare in Greencastle. She was a secretary at Depauw University in Greencastle for many years. She was born in Greencastle on Sept. 20, 1912, to Henry "CB" and Essie Sharp Werneke. She is survived by her cousins, Judy Johnson of Greencastle, Richard A. Werneke, Hubert E. "Budd" Werneke and his wife Carrie, Jane Roots and her husband Kelvin, Susan Werneke Anderson and her husband Rob, R.J. Forbes, Jennifer Marrs, Christine Roots, Carl Roots, and Christopher Anderson, all of Terre Haute, Dennis Werneke of Minneapolis, Judith Harmison of McKinney, Texas and Robin Werneke Anderson of San Diego; friends John & Mary Margaret Rissler, John T. and Andrea Rissler, Tim Rissler and Sarah Rissler. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Werneke of Alaska; and her sister, Helen Werneke of Greencastle. She had served as a volunteer for Putnam County Hospital and for many community service and parish organizations in Greencastle. She enjoyed cooking and traveling. Services are 11 a.m. today in St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, with the Rev. Stephen Jarrell officiating. Burial is in Forest Hill cemetery. Larry Lee Cook
Larry "Cookie" Lee Cook, 63, of Terre Haute, died Monday, July 19, 2004, in his residence. He was a retired welder and maintenance man for 25 years at Midland Glass and also was a self-employed contractor. He was born in Vigo County on May 27, 1941, to Alton Cook and Margaret Shain Cook. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Georgia Smith Cook, whom he married
on June 25, 1960; his "favorite" son, Kevin Cook and daughter-in-law Michelle Cook of Indianapolis; his "favorite" daughter, Kimberlee Cook of Pittsboro; his "favorite" grandson, Kyle Cook; and one brother, Donald Cook. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of the National Rifleman's Association. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Penny Brown officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. David L. Lasseter
David L. Lasseter, 72, of Terre Haute, died at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in his residence. He was a retired dental service technician with Henry Scheine Dental Service. Known by family and friends as "Pa, " he was born Jan. 12, 1932, in Naylor, Mo. to David Albert Lasseter and Anna Lucy Marlin Lasseter. Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise "Pat" Duby Lasseter; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven L. and Sheryll Lasseter of Terre Haute; one daughter and son-in-law, Gwenn and Jim Scarbrough of Terre Haute; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Dustin and Rose Scarbrough, Daisha and Dave Koski, Jared Drew Lasseter, Josiah and Kim Eirhart, Breanna and Levi James, Tabaitha Lasseter, Whitney Eirhart and Torrey Scarbrough; one nephew, Chuck Lassiter, of Hawaii; and two nieces, Bonnie Lindley of Missouri and Shirley Ann Shilling and husband Tom Shilling of Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Jack Lasseter and Louie Lasseter. He was a member of Southside Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Saturday in the Southside Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, with Michael Bowman officiating. Jane LaVerne Horton
Jane LaVerne Horton, 76, of West Terre Haute, died at 3:10 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, in Meadows Manor North. She was born March 1, 1928, in Vigo County to Pierce Ridenour and Verna Evans Ridenour. Survivors include her husband, Roy E. Horton Jr., whom she married
July 28, 1960, in Terre Haute; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Sharon Horton of Lakeport, Calif.; a sister, Barbara McGinnis of Los Angeles; three grandchildren, Steve Horton, Darren Horton and Teresa Vessell; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters. She was a member of First Baptist Church of West Terre Haute and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 428. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Bethesda cemetery. There is no visitation. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church of West Terre Haute for their Children's Ministry. Gene Maegerlein Wirth
Gene Maegerlein Wirth, 89, of Terre Haute died at 9:25 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, in Meadows Manor North. She was formerly a personnel manager at McCrory's Department Store, and also department manager and buyer for W.T. Grants and F.W. Woolworth department stores. She was born April 7, 1915, in Patricksburg to John Martin Maegerlein and Charlotte Stahl Maegerlein. Her husband, Carl J. Wirth, preceded her in death in 1969. She is survived by a niece, Alice Carolynn Williams of Bedford; four nephews; two nieces; several great-nieces and great-nephews; several great-great-nieces and great-great nephews; and one cousin, Rose Irene Scheman of Lakewood, Calif. She also was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; three sisters; three nieces; and two nephews. She was a graduate of Patricksburg High School in 1933 and was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. She also was a member of Pi Rho Zeta Sorority and the American Association of Retired Persons. Services are 3 p.m. Friday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home at 605 South 25th Street, with the Rev. Larry Reck officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 1 p.m. to services Friday in the funeral home. Ruth 'Nanny' Fritts
MARSHALL, Ind. - Ruth "Nanny" Fritts, 78, of Marshall, died at 7:40 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, in her residence. She owned and operated the Marshall Grocery Store from 1971-1985. She also managed Mile High Sound from 1994-1999. She was born April 27, 1926, in Putnam County to Otto L. Reddish and Mary Blanche Oglesbee Reddish. On Feb. 25, 1945, she married
Frank A. Fritts in Waynetown, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1999. Survivors include one son, Mike Fritts and his wife Marge Fritts of Terre Haute; three daughters, Barbara Market and her husband Mike of Terre Haute, Beverly Allen and her husband Roger of Marshall and Janet Stine and her husband Randy of Greenwood; one sister, Marjorie Goff of Crawfordsville; 28 grandchildren, Rob, Nancy and Dobrin Measel, Megan and Lindsay Measel, Jason and Libby Roberts, Joe and Laura Roberts, Erik, Lauren, and Hayden Stine, Jason, Mary Ann, Makayla and Logan Oppy, Brad Allen, Brian and Kevin Brickey, Kelley and Brian Wood, Scott, Tina, Dylan and Katie Market, and Ray, Rebecca and Sidney Mrazik. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Mark Fritts and Monica Measel. She was a 1943 graduate of Waveland High School and a 1944 graduate of Indiana Central Business College. Charles E. Wolfe
LINTON - Charles E. Wolfe, 86, of Linton, and formerly of Dugger, died at 4 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in Linton. He was a retired truck driver and had also worked for the town of Dugger. He was born in Sullivan County on March 8, 1918, to Raymond E. Wolfe and Mary A. Koons Wolfe. He is survived by his wife, Hildred Hamlin, of Linton; two sons, Bobby Lee Wolfe and Larry Raymond Wolfe, both of Dugger; one daughter, Kay Witty of Linton; three brothers, Richard Wolfe and Russell Wolfe, both of Sullivan, and George Wolfe of Terre Haute; three sisters, Geneva Mason and Hazel Null, both of Warsaw, and Rosemary Wade of Portland; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Berniece Turpen Wolfe; three brothers, John, Paul and Basil Wolfe; and one great-grandson, Evan Witty. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a member of the Dugger Church of Christ and attended the Dugger First Christian Church. He also was a member of the Dugger American Legion. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Newkirk's Funeral Home in Dugger, with Nick Moore and the Rev. John Lipscomb officiating. Eugene J. Bronnert
Eugene J. Bronnert, 89, of Terre Haute, died at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 18, 2004, in his son's residence. He was employed for 35 years with Froderman's Chevy City, retiring in 1971. He was born April 15, 1915, in Terre Haute, to Eugene J. Bronnert Sr. and Katherine Carr Bronnert. His wife, Saphronia L. "Susie" Berry Bronnert, died on Nov. 24, 1999. Survivors include one son, Ronald E. Bronnert and his wife Lois of Terre Haute; two grandchildren; Lori Hall and her husband Randy of Charlestown and Krista Bauer and her husband Karl Eric of Florence, Ky.; three great-grandchildren, Hanna Hall of Charlestown and Nathaniel Bauer and Nicholas Bauer of Florence; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful pet and companion, Macy. He also was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Larry Wayne Bronnert; four brothers, George, Lee, Frank and Leonard Bronnert; five sisters, Ann Peters, Kathryn Bronnert, Margaret Hadley, Mary Sanners and Lillian Bronnert. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, with the Rev. Joe Villa officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Heavenly Denny
Heavenly Denny, a baby girl, was born in Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis to Kaydee Denny and Kevin Nasser, both of Terre Haute, at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004, and died at 12:45 p.m. that afternoon. Survivors include her parents; one brother, Josh Baugh; one sister, Danielle Baugh; grandparents, Jane White, Harley and Patricia Denny and Sid and Kathleen Nasser. Services are in the chapel of Highland Lawn cemetery 1 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Bill Herb officiating. Mattox Funeral Homes is in charge of the arrangements.
Esther Nasser Dorsey
Esther Nasser Dorsey, 89, of Terre Haute, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, in Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the owner and operator of Esther's Hideaway Restaurant of Terre Haute. She was born July 13, 1915, in Terre Haute, to George and Ziney Nasser. Her husband, Lester Dorsey, preceded her in death. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Zianna Alley, Mary Ann Hanna, Robert E. Nasser Sr. and his wife, Joan, Skander Nasser Jr. and his wife Helen, Dr. Stephen Nasser and his wife Nancy, all of Terre Haute, Dr. William K. Nasser and his wife Wanda of Indianapolis, Dolores Polifroni and Beverly Radez, both of Terre Haute, and Betty Slyby and her husband William of Fort Wayne; two sisters-in-law, Ann Nasser of Colorado and Mary Nasser of Terre Haute; and many great-nieces and great-nephews and many great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, George, Hikel and Jimmy Nasser, Karrum "Johnny" Nasser, Nimmer "Arthur" Nasser, Paul and Skander Nasser Sr.; and one sister, Maude Nasser. She was a 1934 graduate of Wiley High School and a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. She also was a charter member of Sigma Lambda Zeta Sorority and an avid card player. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Michelle Roos officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, and also 9 a.m. to services on Thursday in the Cloister Room of the church. Margaret Cardwell Gray
Margaret Cardwell Gray, of Terre Haute, passed away in Union Hospital on Monday morning, July 19, 2004. She was born Dec. 8, 1930, in Greeneville, Tenn. to the Rev. Noel H. Cardwell and May Louise Beckham Cardwell. Survivors include her husband, Robert W. Gray; and two daughters, Margaret L. Gray-Mayer and her husband Robert of Indianapolis and Pamela A. Gray and her husband Blake Gage of Baja California, Mexico; and several cousins. She graduated from Hillhouse High School in New Haven, Conn., earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Connecticut, where she was named one of twelve University scholars, and received her Ph.D. from Indiana State University. After teaching many years at West Vigo High School, Margaret became Vigo County School Corp. curriculum coordinator for language arts and social studies, a position she held until her retirement. She was active in Vigo County Retired Teachers, serving as treasurer and then secretary, League of Women Voters, Education Heritage Association of Vigo County and Indiana State Women's Association. Memorial donations may be made to the League of Women Voters or to the Educational Heritage Association of Vigo County. Arrangements are by Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue. Charles Edward Long Sr.
Charles Edward Long Sr., 44, of Terre Haute, died at 2:02 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was an employee of the Terre Haute Parks Department. He was born on June 6, 1960, in Terre Haute, to Vernon Long and Hilda Fuqua Long. He is survived by two sons, Steve Long and Charles E. Long Jr. of Terre Haute; a brother, Bernie Long of Terre Haute; a sister, Phyllis Snyder and her husband Dave of Indianapolis; two half sisters, Loretta Conley and her husband Allan of Terre Haute and Juanita Barton and her husband Bob of Bargersville; and a grandson, Landen Russell Long of Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services are 2 p.m. today in the Highland Lawn cemetery chapel, with Andrew Merritt Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Lawn cemetery. Mindy V. Long
Mindy V. Long, 15, of Santa Maria, Calif., and formerly of Jacksonville, N.C. and Terre Haute, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, in a hospital in Santa Maria. She was born Nov. 28, 1988, in Jacksonville, to the Rev. Sidney Long and Angelina Long of Santa Maria. Survivors include her parents; three sisters, Jasmine, Caitlin and Carissa; one brother, Lamonte; grandparents, Oscar and Nina Long of Terre Haute; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was raised in Terre Haute and came to Santa Maria with her family in 2000. As a home educated student, she had just completed her first year of high school. Her hobbies included reading and playing her acoustic guitar. She loved animals, especially her pet dwarf rabbit, "Choco." Mindy was a vital member of the Revival Tabernacle in Orcutt, Calif., active in its youth group and a talented vocalist in the choir. Services are 10 a.m. today in the Revival Tabernacle, with the Rev. Rick Keys officiating. Interment will follow in Santa Maria cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Revival Tabernacle to benefit Sheaves for Christ, 105A South Broadway, Orcutt, CA 93455. Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary and Crematory in Santa Maria.
Nellie Inez Williams
Nellie Inez Williams, 88, of Terre Haute, died at 3:20 p.m. Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She retired after many years as the clerk for the Harrison Township Justice of the Peace Court in Vigo County. She was born in Birdseye on Nov. 15, 1915, to John Deel and Irene Dillard Deel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry John Williams, whom she married
on June 18, 1938, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 1997. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Virgil R. Willliams and his wife Rosemary, and Donald L. Williams and his wife Norma, all of Terre Haute; one sister, Mary E. Snelling, of Birdseye; one brother and sister-in-law, Ottis P. Deel and his wife Evelyn of Huntingburg; one sister-in-law, Audra K. Deel of Birdseye; six grandchildren, Brian R. Williams, Robert L. Williams, Melissa A. Scott, Kevin S. Williams, Michael Williams and Sara Williams, all of Terre Haute; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers and two sisters, Ernest Deel, Howard Deel, Amanda Atkins and Nova Verpleatse. She was a graduate of French Lick High School. Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Deel officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
