Frank Vandivier

ROCKVILLE - Frank Vandivier, 76, of Rockville died at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2004, in Rockville Rehabilitation Center. He had been a truck driver for 53 years before his retirement. He was born June 28, 1927, in Coxville to Jacob Vandivier and Mary Cottrell Vandivier. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Chezem Bettis Vandivier; one daughter, Brenda Shermer of Fort Wayne; two sons, Mark Vandivier of California, and Frank Vandivier of Kentucky; two brothers, Melvin Vandivier of Indianapolis and Scott Vandivier of Rockville; a stepson, Bill Bettis; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Scott Vandivier; a stepson, Jack Bettis; and a sister, Edith Lunsford. He was an Army veteran, a member of Amvets Post 61 and Post 48 American Legion. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday in Butler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kim Kraemer officiating. Burial is in Memory Gardens cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Tuesday.

Joe Grey Jr.

BRAZIL - Joe Grey Jr., 81, of Brazil died at 12:50 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, in his residence, due to complications from mucosal melanoma cancer. He worked as manager for Dix Lumber for 25 years. He was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Brazil to Joseph Grey Sr. and Anna Nicholson Grey. Survivors include his wife, Joy Raines Grey, whom he married Dec. 16, 1943; his daughter-in-law, Janet Grey of Brazil; a grandson, Clint Grey of Brazil; a granddaughter, Alyssa Grey of Indianapolis; one brother, Don Grey and his wife Phyllis of Brazil; two sisters, Betty Harris of Brazil and Shirley Boyce and her husband Don of Greenfield; nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Michael Grey, on Oct. 19, 2000; three half brothers, Floyd Grey, Lester Grey and Herbert Grey; and a half sister, Elizabeth Wagle. He also worked at Associated Door and Plywood for 10 years, S.H. Pawley Lumber in Center Point and Brazil, and following his retirement in 1986, he worked with his son, Mike, with Grey Custom Woodworking, in home-building and cabinetry. He graduated from Brazil High School in 1941, and attended Indiana State University. He served in the First Air Force during World War II, was a gunnery instructor in Westover Field, Mass., serving for three years and achieving the rank of sergeant. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in French Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tony Alstott officiating. Burial is in Clearview cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Caring Ministry at First United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Aline M. McGlone

BRAZIL - Aline M. McGlone, 77, of Brazil died at 8:10 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2004, in Holly Hill Health Care, where she had been a resident patient since 1999. She had been employed for many years at the former Quaker Maid, a food processing plant in Terre Haute. She was born June 2, 1926, in Vigo County to Arthur and Jenn Krockenberger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale McGlone in 1988. Survivors include one son, Dennis D. McGlone and his wife Janet of Terre Haute; and several cousins. She also was preceded in death by two sisters in infancy; a brother; and a grandson in childhood. In later life, she resided in Clay County and had done volunteer work at Holly Hill before becoming weakened by illness and entering the facility. She graduated from Garfield High School in Terre Haute, attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terre Haute and Senior Citizens' Center in Brazil. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Miller Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Philip G. Myers officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Wednesday.

Wandel Olin 'Bill' Miller

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. - Wandel Olin "Bill" Miller, 85, of Martinsville died at 7:35 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2004, in the presence of his family, in The Waters of Martinsville. He was a self-employed pharmacist. He was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Dale to Elmer Smith Miller and Cornelia Anna Brown Miller. Survivors include his wife, Georgiana Olyejar Miller, whom he married July 6, 1943; two sons, Wandel Bryant Miller of Chappell Hill, Texas, and David George Miller of Dana Point, Calif.; one daughter, Sharilyn Spicknall of Terre Haute; eight grandchildren, Alicia, Sarah, Lyndsay, Alison and Jordan Miller, Lisa Fruth, Richard and Ian Spicknall; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Jess and Wayne Miller; and two sisters, Ruby Mabel Upton and Laura Stone. He was a 1934 graduate of Selvin High School, earned his teaching license from Oakland City College in 1937 and studied business at Lockyear's College in Evansville. He began as a teacher in a one-room school for three years in Pigeon Township, Warrick County, before enlisting in the Army in 1941. After attending Army Air Corps school, he earned the rank of assistant engineering officer at Wright-Patterson Field in Dayton, Ohio. While in Army school at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, he met and later married Georgiana. The following October, he transferred to the 8th Army Air Corps that was stationed at Old Buckingham Air Base in Great Britain. When the war ended in 1945, he returned to the United States and attended Indiana University for three years before transferring to Butler University, where he received a degree in pharmacy in 1950. Successful as a pharmacist, in 1965 he bought Michael's Pharmacy at Raymond and Shelby streets in Indianapolis, which he operated as W. Miller Drugs for 10 years. He also earned a doctorate in pharmacy in the mid-1970s. Other places he worked as a pharmacist include Wiles Drugs, Bloomington; Peoples Drugs and Methodist Hospital, both in Indianapolis; Indiana Youth Center, Plainfield; and Clay County Hospital in Brazil. He was a member of the Indiana Pharmaceutical Association, the American Pharmaceutical Association, was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 1349, Moose Lodge 1127, Post 230 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1257, where he served as post commander in 1976, was district commander in 1983 and National Aide-de-Camp in 1983 and was a member of 40&8 Voiture 931. He enjoyed social dancing, bird watching, tennis, reading, gardening and family fun. He attended Zion's Hill Baptist Church. Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Neal & Summers Mortuary in Martinsville, with the Rev. Norman Able officiating. Burial is in Zion's Hill cemetery, with graveside military honors. Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and one hour before services Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Arthritis Foundation, Indiana Chapter, 8660 Guion Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268; or Gideons International, P.O. Box 189, Martinsville, IN 46151.

Ernest Curtis Caton

Ernest Curtis Caton, 72, of Prairie Creek, died at 10:18 a.m. Friday, June 11, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was a retired farmer. He was born Feb. 24, 1932, in Vigo County to Connie Caton and Mary Norris Caton. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Bell Caton, whom he married Nov. 6, 1958; two sons, Robert Caton and wife Brenda, and William Caton; two daughters, Brenda Isom, and Loretta Henry and her husband Eric; four brothers, Sid Caton, Doyle Caton, Walter Caton and Irvin Caton; two sisters, Freda Holmes and Ruby Hodge; seven grandchildren, Letitia "Shorty" Henry, Ashlee Caton, Leslee Caton, Brittney Isom, Kyle Caton, Kody Caton and Justin Isom. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John Caton, Louis Caton and Wesley Caton; and two sisters, Frances Padgett and Doris Caton. He was a member of Maryland Community Church. Services are 10 a.m. Monday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with the Rev. John Youngblood officiating. Burial is in New Harmony cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Mary Belle Collins Naugle Haymaker

Mary Belle Collins Naugle Haymaker, 96, of West Terre Haute, died at 7:14 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born March 18, 1908, in Fayette Township to John Franklin Collins and Ida Belle Winters Collins. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Leroy "Ted" Naugle, on July 23, 1957. Survivors include her second husband, Homer A. Haymaker; three sons, Wally Naugle and his wife Grace, Chuck Naugle and his wife Ruth, and Jim Naugle, all of Arizona; four daughters, Bonnie Robinson, Mae Hill and her husband Jim, and Laura Shimel and her husband Dennis, all of Arizona, and Barbara Ray and her husband Earl of West Terre Haute; three sisters, Barbara Schlum of Arizona, Dorothy Hesler of Center Point and Betty White of Anderson; two stepdaughters, Lu Siner and her husband, Don, and Jo Crist and her husband Jerry, all of West Terre Haute; and one stepson, John Haymaker and his wife Susan of Newburgh; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and 55 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Vern Collins and Lawrence "Pete" Collins; and two sisters, Catherine Rose Collins and Helen Blackburn; and nieces and nephews. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 428. She held offices in Fayette Township Farm Bureau, Home Economics Club and Rebekah Lodge. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral home with Revs. Jeanne Winter and Kathy Roush officiating. Burial is in Pleasantview cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday with an Eastern Star memorial service at 7 p.m. Visitation continues 7 a.m. until services Tuesday. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation, 9235 N. Meridian St., Suite B-4, Indianapolis, IN 46209-7109, or with envelopes available in the funeral home.

Betty Mae Leachman

Betty Mae Leachman, 82, of Terre Haute, died at 12:20 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, in Union Hospital. She retired from Quaker Maid after 33 years of employment. She was born March 28, 1922, in Vigo County to Matthew Cesinger and Ina Lowish Cesinger. Her husband of 60 years, Russell W. Leachman, died July 10, 2001. Survivors include four daughters, Roberta Fox and her husband Joe of Riley, Freda Cornett and her husband Harry of Terre Haute, Pauline McIntee and her husband Roy of Redwood City, Calif., and Julia Hayes Dupree of Acton, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Cesinger and Dorothy Cesinger, both of Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews; her dog, Tippy; and several good neighbors. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and six brothers, Virgil, Bill, Tub, Buz, Kenny and Ronald Cesinger. She was a 1939 graduate of Glenn High School, a member of Riley American Legion Post 328, a member of Lawton-Byrum Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 Auxiliary and a member of the Wabash Valley Sewing Connection. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, water skiing and fishing, and she played the mandolin. Services are 8 p.m. Sunday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Mark Grayless officiating. Private burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. For those who desire, memorial contributions may be made to Area 7 Agency on Aging, 1718 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47807.

Thomas Dale Little II

Thomas Dale Little II, 56, of Terre Haute, died at 2:48 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, in his residence. He was foreman with the Hulman Farm, where he greatly enjoyed working. He was born Oct. 16, 1947, in Terre Haute to Thomas D. Little and Virginia Heckelsberg Little. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Becker Little; his mother, Virginia Heckelsberg Little; two daughters, Tammy Nally of Terre Haute, and Tara Garrett and her husband Patrick of Marshall, Ill.; one son, Thomas D. Little III of Terre Haute; one brother and sister-in-law, Vince and Cindy Little of Terre Haute; one sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and John Papero of Downey, Calif.; three nieces, Jaima Waggoner, Gianna Papero and Marlissa Atilano; one nephew, Jason Little; and six grandchildren, Andrew, Brandon, Dustin and Derek Nally, and Bayley and Shelby Garrett. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas D. Little. He was a member of Terre Haute First Baptist Church and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a Pioneer Day volunteer at Fowler Park for 25 years, where he was known as "Mr. Ropemaker" for more than 20 years. He was a collector and restorer of stagecoaches and wagons, and he was the former manager of Hawthorn Park for 14 years. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in Callahan Funeral Home at 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Bernie Jackson officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with military services by Lawton Byrum Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 600 S. First St., Terre Haute, IN 47807.

Avice Knipmeyer Conrad McKibben McCrae

Avice Knipmeyer Conrad McKibben McCrae, 100, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, in Westminster Village. She was born Sept. 3, 1903, in Higginsville, Mo., to Frank H. Knipmeyer and Mary Downing Knipmeyer. She came to Terre Haute in 1920 where she graduated from Garfield High School in 1921 and Indiana State Normal School in 1924. She taught in the Terre Haute school system, was a soloist at St. Stephens Episcopal Church and was a cantor at Temple Israel for 14 years. She was a member of St. Stephens Church, a regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the country club of Terre Haute, a life member of the Young Women's Christian Association, The Women's Department Club, Union Hospital Service League, and the Vigo County Historical Society, where she served on the board of directors. She also served on the board of directors of the Chauncey Rose Orphans Home and was the vice-president of the Rose Fairbanks board. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry W. Conrad, Joseph P. McKibben and Thomas S. McCrae; and her son, Lt. Alfred H. Conrad. She is survived by a sister, Lura Lenge, of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Samuel G. Knipmeyer of Ellendale, Tenn.; son, Henry W. Conrad of Terre Haute; daughter, Dr. Mary McCrae of Durham, N.H.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Farmer Conrad of Terre Haute; and four grandchildren, Alfred W. Conrad of Santa Monica, Calif., Mary Downing Sanchez of Hendaye, France, Scarlett McCrae of Portsmouth, N.H., Laura H. McCrae of Dover, N.H.; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and stepchildren too numerous to mention. A memorial service is 11 a.m. today in St. Stephens Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Joseph H. Chillington officiating. Private burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Avice McCrae Scholarship Foundation to benefit Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, care of the Wabash Valley Foundation, Inc., 2901 Ohio Blvd., Suite 153, Terre Haute, IN 47803.

John A. 'Jack' McDaniel

John A. "Jack" McDaniel, 76, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in his residence. He was born May 19, 1928, in Sullivan to William C. McDaniel and Goldie Lewis McDaniel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret "Peg" Fagin McDaniel, in 1999. Survivors include one sister, Doris Surber, of West Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald E. McDaniel and William C. McDaniel; and two sisters, Rosemary Lindley and Frances Rhoden. Mr. McDaniel was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Navy. He was a retired member of the Ironworkers Local No. 439. Services are in Debaun Springhill Chapel today at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. John Sandiford officiating. Visitation is noon until services. Burial is in New Harmony cemetery.

Bennie L. Bennett

ROCKVILLE - Bennie L. Bennett, 41, of Rockville died at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004. He was a logger and timber buyer. He was born Aug. 2, 1962, in Clinton to Lunova "Nuwt" Bennett and Shirley Raub Bennett. Survivors include his mother of Springhill, Fla.; two daughters, Kristy Bennett of Clinton and Lorissa Moore of Columbus; one sister, Brenda Godsey of Holiday, Fla.; and two grandchildren. He was a 1980 graduate of Turkey Run High School in Marshall, Ind. Services are 2 p.m. Sunday in Gooch Funeral home in Rockville, with the Rev. Don Perry officiating. Burial is in Bennett-Judy cemetery in Cherry Grove, W.Va. Visitation is 1 p.m. Sunday until services in the funeral home.

Pauline Dal Sasso

CLINTON - Pauline Dal Sasso, 82, of Clinton died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, in Heritage House of Clinton. She was born June 10, 1922, in Clinton to Simon Bonato and Elizabeth Dal Ponte Bonato. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ugolino Dal Sasso, on March 13, 1989. Survivors include two sisters, Katherine Schmeling of Phelan, Calif., and Elizabeth Meneghini of Terre Haute; one brother, Nick Bello of LaPorte; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Sue Ann Dal Sasso, who died on Nov. 23, 2003; one sister, Anna Secoy; and two brothers, John and Victor Bonato. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Clinton. Services and visitation arrangements are pending. Burial is in Walnut Grove cemetery.

Howard Max Lindsey

CLINTON - Howard Max Lindsey, 65, of Largo, Fla. and formerly of Clinton, died at 9:46 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, in Largo Medical Center, Largo, Fla. He had been a fork truck driver for General Motors in Indianapolis. He was born March 12, 1939, in Clinton to Joseph Anthony Lindsey and Ruth Marie Rife Lindsey. Survivors include his wife, Gynneth Eileen Smith Lindsey of Largo; two sons, Joseph "Brad" Lindsey and his wife Cindy of Clinton and John Lindsey and his wife Abby of Clinton; one daughter, Nancy Inman and her husband Rick of Clinton; one sister, Jolene Diffenderfer, of Chandler, Ariz.; grandchildren, Jenny, Jason, Ann Marie, Zeth, Sydney and Noah Lindsey and Michael and Jessica Inman; great-grandchildren, Kaden and Addison Lindsey and Kaitlyn Inman; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Tony Lindsey; and two brothers, Lawrence "Jody" Lindsey and Henry "Hank" Lindsey. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Clinton and United Auto Workers Union Local 23 in Indianapolis. He had been involved with the Clinton Little League and had moved to Largo from Clinton in 1989. A private graveside service in Walnut Grove cemetery has been arranged.

Marie 'Peg' Nash

SULLIVAN - Marie "Peg" Nash, 86, of Sullivan died at 10:40 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2004, in Sullivan County Community Hospital. She was a former bookkeeper for the Sullivan County Welfare Department and for Nash Appliances. She also was a former town clerk for the City of Shelburne. She was born July 28, 1917, in Farmersburg to Dudley Hayworth and Hester Reed Hayworth. Her husband, James Maurice Nash, preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Sally Aldrich and her husband Warren of Lewisville and Alice Dodd and her husband David of Sullivan; three grandchildren, Lorree Aldrich, Teresa Hannon and Adrian Dodd; seven great-grandchildren, Zach Montgomery, Daniel Montgomery, Adam Litten, Kelsey Hannon, Kristin Hannon, Karley Hannon and Reyna Dodd; and other relatives. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dirrelle "Heavy" Hayworth and Ross "Tiny" Hayworth; and one step grandson. She was a 1935 graduate of Farmersburg High School. She was a member of Sullivan First Christian Church and a 50-year member of the Shelburn Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in Holmes Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Dale Wise and David Cox officiating. Burial is in Westlawn cemetery in Farmersburg. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sullivan First Christian Church.
