Ralph D. Abell
Ralph D. Abell, 92, of Marysville, Wash., formerly of Terre Haute died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004. He retired from Pfizer Inc. He was born November 15, 1911, in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Bauer Abell, who also was from Terre Haute. Survivors include two daughters, Caroline J. Hash and Donna K. Abell, both of Marysville; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael E. and Linda R. Abell of Stanwood, Wash.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by one grandson. He was an avid nature and wildlife lover. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sarvey Wildlife Center, P.O. Box 2083, Everett, Wash. 98203.
Patricia Ellen Atkins
Patricia Ellen Atkins, 66, of Rye, Colo., formerly of Terre Haute died Wednesday Feb. 11, 2004. She was born Dec. 7, 1937, in Terre Haute to Ivan Hastings and Geneva Hastings. Survivors include her husband, Ralph W. Atkins; one daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Danny Chenault of Terre Haute; her mother of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Zachary Atkins and Justin Chenault; one brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Olga Hastings of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father and one sister, Janet Watson. She was a longtime member of Academy Christian Church in Colorado Springs. As per her request, there will be no viewing or services. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to Maplewood Christian Church. Montgomery and Steward Funeral Home in Pueblo, Colo., assisted with arrangements.
John E. Brown
John E. Brown, 82, of Terre Haute died at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was a retired machinist and had worked at Goodwill Industries after retirement. He was born Dec. 3, 1921, in Terre Haute to William Glade Brown and Laura Brady Brown. His wife, Ruby W. Bryce Brown, died Feb. 2, 1997. Survivors include four sons, John Brown Jr. and his wife Deborah of El Segundo, Calif., Larry Brown of Reyno, Ark., Phillip Brown, and Russell Brown and his wife Jill of Clifton, Va.; two brothers, George Brown of Terre Haute and Edward Brown of Florida; one sister, Mary Smith of Terre Haute; grandchildren, John, Christina, Janet, Tabitha, Richard, Shauna, Deborah, Aimee, Carmen and Ashley; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents. He was an Army Air Corps veteran. Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with Dean Waggoner officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Mildred Marie Hickman
Mildred Marie Hickman, 81, of Terre Haute died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was a homemaker. She was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Nevins, Ill., to Charles and Edith McClaskey. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Lester; one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Jonathan Musick of Lewis; one grandson, Shane Musick and his wife Shelley; one great-grandson, Cole Allen Musick; one sister, Beverly Jones of Mattoon, Ill.; two brothers, Johnny and Forrest McClaskey, both of Holland, Mich. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Wilber. Private services are scheduled. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Roselawn Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
Ruth Hall Jones
Ruth Hall Jones, 77, of Terre Haute died at 2:40 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was a homemaker and had worked for several years for Montgomery Ward Department Store in Chicago, prior to moving to Terre Haute in 1970. She was born Jan. 15, 1927, in eastern Kentucky to Benjamin "Frank" Hall and Nancy Holcomb Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Jones, who died in September 2003; her parents, five brothers and one sister. She is survived by two brothers, Robert Hall and spouse Katie of Clarksville, and Fred Hall and spouse Margaret of Cumberland, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of Terre Haute Welcome Club. There will be no services. If friends so desire memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 9135 N. Lois Evelyn Leeth
Lois Evelyn Leeth, 88, of Terre Haute died at 10:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was a homemaker. She was born July 30, 1915, in Darwin Township, Ill., to Elmer Oxendine and Daisy Keaton Oxendine. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Charles William Leeth. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John William and Angela Kay Leeth of Terre Haute; one daughter, Sue Ann Leeth of Sullivan; one sister-in-law, Beulah Oxendine of Terre Haute; one niece, Nancy Oxendine Fagg of Terre Haute; one grandchild, Kymberly Sue Leeth and companion Robert Leib of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; special cat, Nancy; two great-nieces and two great-nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, John Oxendine. She was a 60-year member of Linton Township and Indiana Farm Bureau and a 60-year member of Pimento Chapter 516 Order of Eastern Star. She was known as an excellent cook and an avid flower and vegetable gardener. She enjoyed camping with her husband and was very active in 4-H. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Jeff Lee officiating. Burial is in New Harmony cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. Violet L. Overton
Violet L. Overton, 92, formerly of Terre Haute died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, in Sellersburg (Ind.) Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Terre Haute, she was retired from the Meis Department Store and Elder Beerman Store, after 26 years of service. She was born May 28, 1911, in Terre Haute to Stephen Dubie and Bessie Dubie. Her husband, David L. Overton, died in 1974. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert D. and Vivian Overton of Sellersburg; two brothers, Stephen Dubie Jr., and Charles Dubie; eight grandchildren, Sharolyn Herring, Suzanne Overton and Robert Overton Jr., all of Terre Haute, Jerry Dones of Colorado and Cynthia Williams, Terry Overton, Steven Overton and Vickie Conner, all of the Sellersburg area; 28 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren. She attended Calvary Christian Church in Sellersburg and was a former member of Grace Baptist Church in Terre Haute. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, 1729 S. Eighth St. Burial will follow a chapel service in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Monday.
Mary Elizabeth Rogers
Mary Elizabeth Rogers, 84, of Terre Haute died at 10:10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, in Union Hospital. She retired from Union Hospital after 20 years of service. She was born Nov. 1, 1919, in Sullivan to John Davies and Elsie Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Rogers. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Ester Rogers of Terre Haute. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She also had worked at Quaker Maid and was a member of Church of Christ at 21st and Elm streets. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday in Roselawn Chapel, with Mike Williams and Steve Perkins officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. There is no visitation. DeBaun Funeral Homes assisted with arrangements.
Jo Ann DePrend Stephens
Jo Ann DePrend Stephens, 57, of Indianapolis, formerly of Terre Haute died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, in Indianapolis. She was a claims representative with Gardner and White for three years, retiring in 2003. She was born July 19, 1946, in Indianapolis to Jeffery DePrend and Martha Smith DePrend. Survivors include her husband, Dale F. Stephens; two daughters, Noell Fields and Paige Barton and her husband Darren; two sisters, Sharon Day and Dee Ann Dotson; one brother, Ed Owens; and three grandchildren. She was a graduate of Indiana State University and a member of Indiana Art League and P.E.T.A. Mass is noon Tuesday in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Cremation is scheduled. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday in Conkle Funeral Home Speedway Chapel, and 11 a.m. until services Tuesday in the church.
Patricia Stevens Tighe
Patricia Stevens Tighe, 64, of West Terre Haute died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, in her residence. She was employed with Royal Oaks Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 6, 1940, in West Terre Haute to Claude Stevens and Edith Pooter Stevens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Tighe Sr. Survivors include three sons, Keith Tighe, Jackie Tighe and Charles Tighe, all of Terre Haute; three daughters, Sherry Braken, Patty West and her husband Randall, and Dottie Tighe and her companion Clarence Thomas Jr., all of Terre Haute; five brothers, Jackie Stevens, Claude Stevens and Thomas Stevens, all of Terre Haute, Richard Stevens of Sterling, Va., and Bobbie Stevens of Clinton; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She loved to play bingo. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in Valley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tracy Southwood officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.

JASONVILLE - Clyde E. Anderson, 79, of Jasonville died at 10:05 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, in Shakamak Good Samaritan Center. He was employed in maintenance at Shakamak State Park. Anderson, both of Indiana; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Pam and Bob Chattin of Jasonville and Ginger and Robert Bobb of Indianapolis; one stepson and his wife, Hal and Rita Hall of Linton; three sisters, Francis Bennett, Jean VanMeerten and her husband, Dick, all of Jasonville and Betty Ginter of Lake Station; one brother, Jim W. Anderson of Jasonville; 10 grandchildren, Jeremy Chattin and his wife Angel, Brandon Chattin and his wife, Juanita, Candra Brunson and her husband, Randy, Jesse Chattin, Amber Barish, John Hancock and his wife, Ashley, Kaleb Scott Hall, Lacey Hall, Levi Hall and Kelsea Hall; two step grandchildren, Paul E. Chapman Jr., and his wife, Sarah and April Fifer and her husband, Darrin; 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua Chattin, Lukas Chattin, Alexis Brunson, Halle Brunson, Jarett Barish, Makayla Hancock, Paul Eugene Chapman IV, Hannah Fifer, Haylee Fifer and Harlee Fifer; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lloyd Anderson; and one granddaughter, Casey Leigh Hall. He was a member of CCC and an Army veteran of World War II. Burial is in Lebanon cemetery in Midland, with graveside military rites by Jasonville American Legion Post 172 and Jasonville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6225. Pallbearers are Jeremy Chattin, Brandon Chattin, Jesse Chattin, John Hancock, Kaleb Hall and Levi Hall. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Monday.
Gladys L. Rheinfrank
BRAZIL - Gladys L. Rheinfrank, 87, of Brazil died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She worked at CBS for several years. She was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Vigo County to William C. Ferguson and Margaret Ralston Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Martin Hardman. Survivors include her husband, Harold Rheinfrank; one daughter, Jan Hardman Smith; one granddaughter, Jamie Lynne Shears; and two great-granddaughters, Alexandria Michelle Shears and Sydney Lynne Shears. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, William Wallace Ferguson. She was a graduate of Staunton High School and a former member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She also was a member of Eastside Christian Church and was currently serving as a deaconess. Services are 6:30 p.m. Monday in French Funeral Home, with the Revs. Bill Brock and George Hewitt officiating. At her request cremation will follow, with burial of cremains at a later date. Visitation is 4 p.m. until services Monday.
Virginia Ann 'Nana' Smith
CLAY CITY - Virginia Ann "Nana" Smith, 63, of Clay City died unexpectedly at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, in her residence. She was a homemaker. She was born June 15, 1940, in Terre Haute to Clifford and Leatha Watkins. Survivors include her husband, Ted B. Smith, whom she married
Jan. 31, 1960, in Lyford; one son, Ted B. Smith Jr. and his wife Linda of Bloomington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Penni A. and Michael Campbell of Center Point, and Tina A. and Robert Weber of Clay City; grandchildren, Jeremy Smith and his fiancee Jackie Martz, Derek Smith, Joel Campbell, Katrina M. Campbell, Dana L. Weber and Dakotah D. Weber; one great-grandson, Jacob Martz; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Russell E. and Anita L. Turner of Brazil. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one grandson, Jordan Allen Campbell in 1993. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending quality time with her family. Macion 'Pops' Hixon
Macion "Pops" Hixon, 89, of Terre Haute died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, in Southwood Health & Rehabilitation Center He had operated several shoe stands in Terre Haute. He was born Oct. 25, 1914, in Ellaville, Ga., to George W. Hixon Sr., and Bobbie Spivey Hixon. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Ellis Hixon, whom he married
March 23, 1952; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Clarence "Bummy" Evans Jr.; four sisters, Annie Hawkins, Ida G. Hixon, Helen Milner and Nola Bell-Aldridge; and three brothers, George W. Hixon Jr., Leamon Hixon and Eddie Lynn Hixon. He was a member of Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a precinct committeeman. He loved traveling across the country and attending family reunions. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church at 2415 Eighth Ave., with the Rev. Harvey Grissom officiating. Burial is in Grandview cemetery. Mary Lou Barbour Campbell
Mary Lou Barbour Campbell, 87, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was an administrative assistant in the Bureau of Motor Vehicles from 1969 to 1972 and a clerk in the Vigo County Voters' Registration Office from 1972 to 1980. She was born Sept. 3, 1916, in Clay County to Corey Barbour and Grace Hickman Barbour. Because of the early death of her mother, she was reared by her aunt and uncle, Charles and Elizabeth Shew of Libertyville. Her husband, Robert F. Campbell, whom she married
Aug. 21, 1937, died in 1998. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Jerry Isaacs of Tulsa, Okla.; one grandson, Brent Isaacs of Cincinnati; one granddaughter, Beth Layton Isaacs of Tulsa; one niece, Betty Jo Martin of Terre Haute; and several other nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was a 1934 graduate of Fayette High School, a member of the former First United Methodist Church and Centenary United Methodist Church. She was a former Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church and was a Republican precinct committeewoman for 40 years. In her early years she was a 4-H leader. Services are 3 p.m. Saturday in Roselawn Funeral Home at 7500 N. Clinton St., with the Rev. Paul Wagner officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park.
