Wanda M. Pethel
SULLIVAN - Wanda M. Pethel, 96, of Sullivan, died at 6:40 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003 in Sullivan Co. Community Hospital. She retired as a cook in Graysville School. She was born September 3, 1906 in Boone Co. to Edward Parrigen and Myrtle Sutton Parrigen. She was preceded in death by her husband Claude Pethel. Survivors include two sons, Bill D. Pethel of Las Vegas, Nev. and Richard D. Pethel of Naples, Fla.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was a member of Sullivan 1st Christian Church, Order of Eastern Star No. 188, Home Ec Club, and The Garden Club. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Banks and Brust Funeral Home with the Revs. Dale Wise and David Cox officiating. Burial will be in Center Ridge cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday.
Patric C. Quirke
MARSHALL - Patric C. Quirke, 69, of Marshall, Ill., died at 11:40 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003 in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was retired from TRW in Marshall where he was Director of Quality and Engineering. He was born Apr. 21, 1933 in Chicago to Cornelius Quirke and Myrtle Megow Quirke. Survivors include his wife, Karen Clay Quirke, of Marshall; three sons, Kevin Quirke of San Diego, Calif., Brian Quirke, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Michael Quirke, of Bloomington, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Jared, Barry, Ian, Corey and Aaron of Calif., and Magan, Morgan, and Chelsey of Marshall; one sister, Jo Ann Quirke; one sister-in-law, Sue Ann Quirke; and one nephew, Richard Quirke all of Milwaukee, Wis. He was preceded in death by two sons, Barry Quirke, and Patric Carl Quirke; and one brother, Dennis Quirke. He served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict where he served as a Sonar Tech and a Survival officer. He was a former member of the American Legion Post No. 90 of the American Legion in Marshall. He was a long-standing member of the Marshall Rotary Club where he became a Paul Harris Fellow. He also was a member of the Marshall Golf Club. Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall with the Rev. John Davis officiating. Clark Co. post 90 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars post 5975 will conduct military rites immediately following memorial service at the funeral home. Visitation is Noon until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the Marshall Rotary Club or to the American Cancer Society. A reception for family and friends will be immediately following services at the Quirke residence.
Charles Henry Cheek
Charles Henry Cheek, 56, of Terre Haute died at 11:18 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, in Union Hospital. He was a carpenter. He was born Nov. 8, 1946, in Terre Haute to Raymond Cheek and Nellie Cheek. Survivors include his companion, Carole Christina Williams; one daughter, Lori Shealy of Lexington, S.C.; 11 grandsons, Charles Patterson, Ben Patterson, Andres Teran, Billy Carnell, John Carnell, Jacob Tingley, Josh Doty, Arron Doty, Greg Roberts Jr., Kenny Tingley Jr., and James Tingley; six granddaughters, Lacey Patterson, Carly Teran, Brooke Tingley, Haley Corthem, Jessica Shealy and Brittany Shealy; one uncle, Johnny Allsup and his wife, Norma; and one aunt, Mary Byrd and her husband, Ed. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a 1965 graduate of Wiley High School and attended Lincoln Trail College. He worked as a carpenter for Getty Oil Co., and Arizona Salt Creek Project in Arizona, and for Pfister & Co., and Newman Co., in Terre Haute. He recently was employed by Jim Davis of Terre Haute. Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. today in Highland Lawn cemetery. There is no visitation. Valley Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
M. Ruby Hallock
M. Ruby Hallock, 92, formerly of Terre Haute died at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, in Plainfield Health Care Center. She was a homemaker. She was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Sullivan County to Jacob Ora Starkey and Bertha Hill Starkey. Her husband, Albert Hallock, died in 1986. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Pamela Hallock of Plainfield; and two grandsons and their wives, Christopher and Beth Hallock of Carmel and Jason and Amanda Hallock of Columbus, Ga. She also was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Cecil Starkey, Charles Starkey, David Starkey and Raymond Starkey; two sisters, Sylvia Gambill and Faye Johnson; and two infant sisters. She was a member of Maryland Community Church and the former Grace United Methodist Church. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, with the Rev. John Youngblood officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Monday.
Joseph 'Al' Rice
Joseph "Al" Rice, 74, of West Terre Haute died at 6:35 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, in Union Hospital. He retired as a delivery salesman with Meadow Gold Dairy after many years of service and later worked as a Pinkerton Security Guard at Columbia House for 10 years. He was born Oct. 28, 1928, in West Terre Haute to William James Rice and Anna Sullivan Rice. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Chadwick Rice, whom he married
June 30, 1956, in West Terre Haute; two sisters, Marie Pickrell and Jane Starkey and her husband, Bill, all of Terre Haute and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Dick Rice, Ralph Rice, William Rice and Robert Rice; and two sisters, Loretta Hauser and Lucille Dowell. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving with the Signal Corps. He was a member of St. Leonard's Catholic Church in West Terre Haute, a member of American Legion Post 501 of West Terre Haute, American Legion Post 90 of Marshall, Ill., and a lifetime member of the Young Men's Club of West Terre Haute. He was a graduate of Fayette High School. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bernard Head officiating. Entombment is in Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Park, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6574. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. until services Monday. The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
William Oren Thompson
William Oren Thompson, 92, of Riley died at 3:50 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was a retired driller for Maumee-Collier/Peabody Coal Co., and had worked on the construction of Interstate 70. He was born Oct. 23, 1910, in Vigo County to Clude Thompson and Hattie Thompson. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lucille Harbrueger Thompson; one son, Carl W. Thompson and his wife, Pamela of Terre Haute; one sister, Eunice Thompson of West Terre Haute; and two granddaughters, Andrea Thompson of Terre Haute and Amanda DiBerardina of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marie Powell and Irma Streeter; and one brother, Vern Thompson. He was a member of Riley United Methodist Church and was a former member of Odd Fellows of Riley. He spent his later working years for Indiana State University in the maintenance department. Services are 10 a.m. Monday in Mattox-Fox Funeral Home in Riley, with the Rev. Richard Coleson officiating. Burial is in Oak Hill cemetery in Riley. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Barbara Lou Badger
SULLIVAN - Barbara Lou Badger, 75, of Sullivan died at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, in Sullivan County Community Hospital. She was a retired licensed practical nurse at the Village Nursing Home and Miller's Merry Manor. She was born Feb. 27, 1928, in Sullivan to Chalmer Stark and Sophrona Benson Stark. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, the Rev. Gerald Badger, whom she married
Dec. 24, 1946; three sons, John M. Badger and his wife, Debbie of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Brent A. Badger and his wife, Pam of Martinsville and Kemuel S. Badger and his wife, Dianna of Muncie; one brother, Charles R. Stark of St. Louis; six grandchildren; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church. Services are 2 p.m. Monday in First Assembly of God Church, with the Revs. Tom Turner and Sam Bush officiating. Burial is in Westlawn cemetery in Farmersburg. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Holmes Memorial Chapel.
Alice M. Hayes
Alice M. Hayes, 77, of Terre Haute, died at 10:25 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2003, in Meadows Manor East. She was an owner and manager of the Goodie Shop Restaurant on Ohio Street in downtown Terre Haute. She was born May 14, 1926, in Terre Haute to George Martin and Edna Guthrie Martin. Survivors include one daughter, Lisa Lowery and her husband, Jerry, of Martinsville, Ill.; two sons, Kenneth "Marty" Hayes of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Chris W. Hayes and his wife, Virginia, of Terre Haute; former husband, Ken Hayes, of Terre Haute; a brother-in-law, Porter Bridwell of Huntsville, Ala.; eight grandchildren, Deone McNeil, Carter Wilson, Jarett Hayes, Garth Hayes, Adam Hayes, Alissa Hayes, Chase Hayes and Christen Hayes; two great-grandchildren, Darby McNeil and Grace McNeil; one niece and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Denise L. Hayes; and a sister, Saundra Bridwell. She attened Indiana State University. She formerly was active with the League of Terre Haute. Clara E. Holaday, 80, of Marion died at 8:01 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in Marion General Hospital. She was a homemaker and owner of Holaday's Party Shop. She had lived in Marion since 1951, moving from Huntington, W.V. She was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Plattsmouth, Neb., to Clifford Maxwell Pickens Sr. and Harriett Ada Clark Pickens. William Paul Iahn
William Paul Iahn, 74, of Terre Haute, died at 12:15 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in Harborside Health Care. He was a retired U.S. Postal Service carrier. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1948. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Special Interest Car Club, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Retired Federal Employees Association. Jessie Marie Cooper Johnson, 88, of Terre Haute, died at 6 p.m., Monday, July 28, 2003. She was a homemaker. She was born Jan. 12, 1915, in Terre Haute, to Rom Cooper and Nora Decker Cooper. Survivors include one son, Elmer Leon Johnson and his wife Judith Lou Weir Johnson, one uncle, Joe Decker; two sisters, Opal Clark and Juanita Hayhurst; two sisters-in-law, Helen Cooper and Marcella Decker; two grandchildren, Todd Leon Johnson and wife, Mary Karen Krieg Johnson, Kathy Marie Johnson O'Donnell and husband, Michael Joseph O'Donnell; six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn O'Donnell, Caroline Grace O'Donnell, Evan Joseph O'Donnell, Jake Michael O'Donnell, Todd Johnson and Maria Julia Johnson, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband, of 64 years, Elmer Johnson, died Sept. 18, 1998. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Ivan Cooper, Paul Cooper and Lyman Cooper. She was a past worthy matron of Prairie Creek Order of Eastern Star Chapter and a member of the Prairie Creek Extension Homemakers Club for 41 years. Helen Rose Waggoner
Helen Rose Waggoner, 70, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, in Royal Oaks Nursing Home. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in several area schools. She was born in Terre Haute, May 6, 1923, to Bert Waggoner and Selda Johnson Waggoner. Survivors include one sister, Mary Jane Layman; one brother, James Waggoner; five nieces, Mary Slater, Cheryl Bacon, Teresa Schmid, Winny Stricker and Dorothy Waggoner; two nephews, Richard Kupferer and Donald Waggoner; three great-nieces, five great-nephews; three great great-nieces and three great-great-nephews. She was a member of Maplewood Christian Church and Mature Singles Club. Services are 11 a.m. Friday in Thomas Funeral Home with the Rev. Craig Wininger officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Hugh L. Curry
CLINTON - Hugh L. Curry, 79, of Clinton and formerly of Joliet, Ill., died at 4:57 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil. He was a retired electrician. He was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Terre Haute to Claude Curry and Mamie Pender Curry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion. Survivors include three half-sisters, Pearl Johnson and Mable Gregg, both of Clinton and Glenna Lee Shriver of Florida, and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 179 for more than 50 years. He was a tailgunner in the Army during World War II, flying more than 65 missions. He attended the First Assembly of God Church in Joliet. Services are 2 p.m. Thursday in Frist Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Coombes officiating. Burial is in Walnut Grove cemetery. Visitation is 1 p.m. Thursday until services.
Carl E. 'Rocky' Rockhill
GREENCASTLE - Carl E. "Rocky" Rockhill, 76, of Lafayette and a former resident of Greencastle, died Monday, Aug. 28, in the Indiana Veterans Home in Lafayette. He was born July 18, 1927, in Putnam County to Russell and Geneva Herbert Rockhill. There are no known survivors. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in the Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home.
