Thelma Grounds
ST. BERNICE - Thelma Grounds, 93, of Marshall, Ill., and formerly of St. Bernice died at 4:40 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2002, in Burnside Nursing Home in Marshall. She was a homemaker. She was born Oct. 18, 1908, in Jefferson County, Ill., to Ira J. Jones and Pearlie Foltz Jones. Her husband, Dennis Grounds, died April 11, 1979. Survivors include one son-in-law, Harry Cook and his wife, Violet of Marshall; one nephew, Ira Joe Jones of Clinton; two nieces, Barbara Nunn of Rockville and Bonnie Trezise of Terre Haute; 11 great-nieces and great-nephews; and 22 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Joyce Cook; one brother, Harold Jones; one sister, Bonnie Jones; and one niece, Betty Sutton. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge and had attended the St. Bernice Nazarene Church. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in Frist Funeral Home in Clinton. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society; Shriners' Hospital for Children; or, to the charity of donors' choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Dorothy D. Johnson
SULLIVAN - Dorothy D. Johnson, 90, of Sullivan died at 2:30 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2002, in Miller's Merry Manor. She was born March 25, 1912, in Danville, Ill., to William E. Douthit and Fannie M. Compton Douthit. Survivors include her husband, Harold W. Johnson; one son, Harold W. Johnson III; three daughters, Doddie Stone, Donna L. Dunham and Kristi Ann Ferguson; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Banks & Brust Funeral Home, with Bishop Joe Wilson officiating. Burial is in Johnson cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and before services Wednesday.
Richard W. Wilson
SHELBURN - Richard W. Wilson, 85, of Terre Haute and formerly of Shelburn died at 1:30 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2002, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born Jan. 7, 1917, in Paris, Ill., to Herschel George Wilson and Ruth Sears Wilson. Survivors include one daughter, Ruth LaBaume; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Monday in Mattox-McHugh Shelburn Chapel, with the Rev. Neal Ferron officiating. Burial is in Farmersburg Westlawn cemetery, with graveside military rites by Shelburn, Sullivan and Hymera American Legion Posts. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Paul Richard Cottom
Paul Richard Cottom, 86, of Terre Haute, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born Aug. 11, 1916, in Terre Haute to Richard Roland Cottom and Lustia Fern Cottom. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Cottom; one daughter, Linda Pettit; two stepsons, Anthony Kisner and Patrick Wardle; two stepdaughters, Fran Ralston and Tricia Drew; two brothers, Bob Cottom and Eugene Cottom; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services are private Wednesday in Roselawn Memorial Park. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. There is no visitation.

Lloyd W. Joy, 79, of West Terre Haute died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in his residence. He retired from the Teamsters Union Local 135. He was born Aug. 8, 1923, in Sanford to William McKinnley Joy and Goldie Mae Shuman Joy. His first wife, Norma J. Alkire Joy, whom he married

Joy of Prairieton, and Don Trout and his wife, Pauline Trout of Lafayette; one sister-in-law, Rose Joy of Terre Haute; eight grandchildren; Scott Mahan and his wife, Imee Mahan, Chris Mahan, Derek Weaver, Lindsay Hollie, Audra Hollie, Cody Myers, Brandi Runyan, Rita Cox, Heidi Cox, Brad McKenzie, Tim McKenzie, Tyden Graverson and Shannessy Graverson; one great-grandson, Jerry Scott Mahan II; three step-great-grandchildren, Leah Marie Runyan, Maverick Runyan and Cole Graverson; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Taylor; and two brothers, William Joseph Joy and Roy "Si" Joy. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post 40, Terre Haute, Bridgeton Lodge 169 Free and Accepted Masons and the Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Christ United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Barbara Taylor officiating. Burial is in New Providence cemetery, with military graveside rites. Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. today in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with a Masonic memorial service at 7 p.m. There is also visitation from 9 a.m. Tuesday until services. Pallbearers are Kim Kesler, Gary Crouch, Paul Bridgewater, Chris Mahan, Scott Mahan and Tom Graverson. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry McGlone, Joseph "Bud" Joy, Arbie Montgomery and Tom McQueary. Virginia Maxine Shores, 87, of Terre Haute died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Royal Oaks Nursing Home. She was a secretary at Packard Shirt Co. She was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Vigo County to Arlington Earl Haynes and Stella Mae Burgett Haynes. Her husband, Lester W. Shores, whom she married
Nov. 23, 1933, died, Dec. 6, 1979. Survivors include one nephew, Larry E. Hayne and his wife, Gloria; two nieces, Shirley McNabb and her husband, Larry McNabb and Sherry Fitzgerald and her husband, Gary Fitzgerald. She was also preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of the Moose Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Thomas Funeral Home. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Merle R. Spittler, 68, of Terre Haute died at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in his residence. He retired from International Laborers Union Local 204 in Terre Haute. He was born Jan. 13, 1934, in Vigo County to Ruell Faye Spittler and Martha Shepard Spittler. Survivors include his wife, of 49 years, Phyllis J. Tryon Spittler, whom he married

Spittler of Goshen; one brother, Bill Spittler of Brownsburg; three brothers-in-law, Howard Tryon, Dick Culver and Larry Nelson; four sisters-in-law, Sue Tryon, Judy Culver, Patty Nelson and Betty Tryon; several nieces; one nephew, Fred Mackey and his wife, Rhonda and their children; a special dog companion, Samantha; special friends, Mr. and Mrs. George Cline and Ken DisPennett; and many West Terre Haute friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Richard Steven Spittler, who died July 30, 1974; two brothers; four sisters; and one brother-in-law, Warren Tryon. Gregory A. Yoho
Gregory A. Yoho, 54, of Terre Haute died at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in Union Hospital. He was the owner of the Train Depot and former owner of Goetz printing, Vigo County Ambulance and Aid Ambulance in Vigo County. He was born Jan. 21, 1948, in South Bend to Lewis Yoho and Mary Lou Shedd Yoho. Survivors include his wife, Jean Lewsader Yoho, whom he married
Aug. 5, 1972; his mother, Mary Lou Yoho; one sister, Lora Sapp and her husband, David Sapp of Fort Wayne; one niece, Lindsay Sapp; and one nephew, Steven Sapp. He was preceded in death by his father. He had a master's degree from Indiana State University. He was a member of Honey Creek Volunteer Fire Department, and a former member and past president of Terre Haute South Rotary Club. Survivors include two sons, Steven Hood and Gary Kennedy; one daughter, Rita Kennedy Jackson, five brothers, William R. Cole, George L. Cole, Warren E. Cole, John W. Cole and Harvey L. ST. BERNICE - Hellen Y. Hopkins, 78, of St. Bernice died at 9:10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. She was a homemaker. She was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Denver. Survivors include her husband, Ralph M. Hopkins, of St. Bernice; two daughters, Judith Mead of Denver, and Holly Lloyd of Indianapolis; two sons, Russell Yarnall III of Denver, and Stephen Hopkins of Frankfort; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Sue Yarnall. Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Frist Funeral Home, with the Rev. Randy Perry officiating. CLAY CITY - Ruth F. Jackson, 60, of Clay City died at 9:20 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in her residence. She was born Nov. 26, 1942, in Greene County to Roy and Dovie Knoy Rollison. Chad Michael Shorter
BRAZIL - Chad Michael Shorter, 22, of Brazil died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a certified nursing assistant in Terre Haute nursing homes. He was born July 15, 1980, in Terre Haute to David Thomas Shorter and Brenda Kay Helt Shorter. Survivors include his fiancee, Angela Waldon; one son, Ethan Shorter; his parents; two brothers, Shawn Shorter and Brandon Shorter; two grandmothers, Betty Helt and Mary "Dixie" Shorter; great-grandmother, Nettie Hart; two aunts, Vicki Shorter and Carla Weese; four uncles, Mark Shorter, Ron Weese, James Shorter and Les Helt; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Robert R. Shorter and Jesse E. Helt; one uncle, Bryan Helt; and one cousin. He was a 1998 graduate of Northview High School, and attended Ivy Tech State College. He played youth football and baseball in Clay County and youth basketball in Clay County and Vigo County.
