Frances Louise Miles
Frances Louise Miles, 92, of Greencastle and formerly of Terre Haute, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, in her residence. She was born Jan. 31, 1911, in Greencastle to Frank Miles and Louis Dickens Miles. Survivors include her brother, James A. Miles of Greencastle; three nephews, Frank Miles of California, Billy Miles of Colorado and Chuck Miles of Terre Haute; three nieces, Sandra Wills and Jan Witfall, both of Terre Haute, and Deloris Smith of California. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister; and five brothers. She was a 1928 graduate of Greencastle High School and graduated from Indiana State University. She was a charter and lifetime member of the Terre Haute branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, RSVP, AARP and Church Women United. She was an aunt and great-aunt to four generations. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greencastle with the Rev. Robert Wilson Jr. officiating. Burial is in Forest Hill cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Mary Anne Vicars
Mary Anne Vicars, 72, of Greensburg and formerly of Terre Haute, died at 12:15 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2003, in her residence. She retired in 1993 as a licensed practical nurse at Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Sept. 9, 1930, in Vigo County to Alfred Knight and Stella Young Knight. Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Willard L. "Bud" Vicars; one son, Richard L. Vicars of Fontanet; three daughters, Edith Wittenmyer of Marshall, Ill., Lucy Rumsey of Greensburg and Elaine Brooks of Mooresville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three nieces; and three nephews. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Greensburg and a former member of Bridgeton and Hymera Baptist churches. She also was retired from the former CBS and the former Quaker-Maid in Terre Haute. After retirement, she and her husband lived in Mission, Texas, until this past May. She is scheduled for cremation. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Bethesda Memorial Park cemetery in West Terre Haute with the Rev. Jack F. Hopkins officiating. Donald W. Bickel
JASONVILLE - Donald W. Bickel, 70, of Jasonville died at 10:15 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2003, in Greene County General Hospital. He was a retired carpenter, farmer and salvage business operator. He was born Jan. 15, 1933, in Patricksburg to Laymon W. Bickel and Thelma M. Loden Bickel. Survivors include his wife, Lucy E. Edelman Bickel, whom he married
Sept. 27, 1953; five daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Jim Bradbury of Hymera, Diana and Kerry Mitchel, Nancy and Dennis Jones and Debbie and Steve Strahla, all of Jasonville, and Cheryl and Jeff Reed of Indianapolis; two sons, Donnie Bickel and special friend Sherri Lannahan of Coalmont, and David Bickel and special friend Sandy Cazee of Jasonville; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Joan Bickel, Larry and Shirley Bickel, all of Columbus, Jack and Wanda Bickel of Coalmont and Bill and Gudrun Bickel of Washington state; 15 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Billy Turley. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a lifelong member of Coalmont Church of God, Gideon International for 21 years, president of Clay County Camp of Gideon International, and was active in Clay County politics for several years. Services are 2 p.m. Monday in McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home with the Revs. Harold Thomas and J.F. Rehmel officiating. Burial is in K of P cemetery in Hymera. James R. Latham
HARMONY - James R. Latham, 69, of Harmony, died Friday, July 25, 2003, in Union Hospital after a brief illness. He worked for Pillsbury until retirement. He was born June 23, 1934, in Bartholomew County to Morris C. Latham and Hazel Hoskins Latham Draper. Survivors include his wife, Eva Hadley Latham, whom he married
June 24, 1954; mother; stepmother, Lillian Latham of Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Joe Yockey of Clay City; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Jennifer Latham of Brazil; three grandchildren, Brandi Hoopingarner and her husband, Billy, Crystal Cox and Jacob Latham; a great-granddaughter, Callie Hoopingarner; three sisters, Jeanne Brown and her husband, Bob, of Hartford City, Betty Smith and her husband, Dick, of North Carolina and Patty Lahmann and her husband, Leonard, of Texas; one brother, Bob Latham and his wife, Lois, of Texas; three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Pat and Dale Dickison, Ruby and Jim Crouse and Mary and Jim Girton; one brother-in-law and his wife, Gib and Joyce Hadley. He was preceded in death by his father. He graduated in 1955 from Van Buren High School. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church. He enjoyed taking pictures and constructing remote control airplanes. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in French Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Kumpf officiating. Musical selections provided by Steve McCullough. Burial is in Calcutta cemetery. Bill J. 'Pete' Shannon
CLINTON - Bill J. "Pete" Shannon, 49, of Clinton, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, in Union Hospital. He was a painter with Local 80 in Lafayette and Local 157 in Terre Haute. He was born Nov. 14, 1953, in Clinton to William J. Shannon Sr. and Velma McMasters Shannon. Survivors include his son, Kyle Shannon of Clinton; his parents; a grandson, Breydon Shannon and his mother, Kristina; three sisters, Connie Sprinkle and her husband, John, of Attica, Kathy Sprouls and her husband, Bob, and Kelly Stevens and her husband, Rick, all of Clinton; brother, Steve Shannon and his wife, Rosie, of St. Bernice; two half-brothers, Rick Hedges of Nashville, Tenn., and Johnny Hollowell of Ligonier; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Richard L. Moody
Richard L. Moody, 63, of Terre Haute died at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, in Union Hospital. He was a mail handler for the United States Postal Service, retiring September 2000, and was formerly employed at Newport Chemical Depot. He was born July 5, 1938, in Terre Haute to Willard Moody Sr., and Constance Hathecock Moody. Survivors include his wife, Emilie Hartmann Moody, whom he married
Aug. 15, 1998; three sons, Ricky Scaggs of Indianapolis, and Dylan F. Moody and John Phillips, both of Terre Haute; three sisters, Martha Richard of Colorado Springs, Colo., Betty Johnson of Columbus, Ohio and Carole Jones of Brazil; four brothers, Willard "Chick" Moody Jr., of Kuttawa, Ky., Douglas Moody of Detroit, Wesley Moody of Chicago and Wendell Moody of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Rikara Scaggs and Ricky Scaggs, both of Indianapolis and Terrell Phillips and Jazzlyn Phillips, both of Terre Haute; one uncle, Verdell Hathecock of Terre Haute; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Norman Moody and Robert Moody. He was a 1956 graduate of Wiley High School, an Air Force veteran and a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Spruce Street African Methodist Episcopal Church and American Legion Pioneer Post 340, where he served as post commander, sergeant of arms and service officer. He also was a member of the Marine Corps League and the Purple Heart Association and was a former member of Prince Hall Lodge 4. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Spruce Street A.M.E. Church, 1660 Spruce St., with the Rev. Henry Barnhill officiating. Burial is in Stewart Lawn cemetery, with graveside military rites by the Marine Corps League and American Legion Pioneer Post 340. Mary Francis Payne
Mary Francis Payne, 70, of Terre Haute died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in Royal Oaks Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was employed at Union Laundry and Vigo County Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 29, 1931, in Terre Haute to Donald Rollings and Pearl Knight Rollings. Her husband, Leroy Payne, died earlier. Survivors include two daughters, Madonna Bracken and Theresa Liston; her mother of Terre Haute; one sister, Bertha Wiles of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Lorie Cozee of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Vernon Bracken, Robin Price and Donald Bracken, all of Terre Haute; and great-grandchildren, Jessica Gabbard of Scottsdale, Kimi Bates, Bryana VanGilder, Josh Bracken, Allisha Bracken, Kevin Bracken, Vernon Bracken Jr., Kimberly Bracken, Austin Bracken, Mercedes Bracken, Donald Bracken Jr., Greg Bracken and Bruce Bracken, all of Terre Haute. She also was preceded in death by her father. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Thomas Funeral Home. Burial is in Bethesda Memorial cemetery in West Terre Haute. Bonnie L. Sisson
Bonnie L. Sisson, 35, of Terre Haute died at 2:44 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, in Union Hospital. She was born Aug. 9, 1966, in Indianapolis to Verlon D. Sisson and Gayle M. Sisson. Survivors include three sons, Jorden Sisson, Justin Hurtt and Jaden Sisson; her mother and stepfather, Gayle and Earl Byerley; one sister, Lisa Roberts; one brother, William Bailey; and one niece. Cremation is scheduled. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Leek officiating. Visitation is one hour before services Saturday.
Mary L. Dugger Waller
Mary L. Dugger Waller, 85, of Terre Haute died at 6:05 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, in Southwood Health Care Center. She was the retired owner of M & M Restaurant and Lounge, which she built and operated. She was born Oct. 12, 1916, in Cuzco, Dubois County, Ind., to George Landreth and Goldean Landreth. Her first husband, Mason Jenkins, died in 1950; her second husband, Melvin Dugger, died in 1958; and her third husband, Merle S. Waller, died in 1994. Survivors include one daughter, Georgia Ann Foote and her husband, Sam of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Michael Foote and his wife, Gayla, Mary Ann Grady and her husband, Rick, Steve Foote and his wife, Jeannette and Scott Foote and his wife, Shelly, all of Terre Haute; seven great-grandchilden, Ryan Foote, Chris Foote, D.J. Johnson, Sara Johnson, Cameron Grady, Catie Ann Grady and Shelby Foote. She also was preceded in death by one brother, John; and one sister, Sarah. She was a former resident of Vincennes, where she and her first husband owned and operated a grocery store. Following his death she came to Terre Haute, where she had several businesses, including Mary's Truck Stop in Seelyville. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Saturday.
Harry E. Baker
CLINTON - Harry E. Baker, 76, of St. John and formerly of Clinton died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001. He was born in Clinton to John Baker and Chelsea McQueen Baker. Survivors include his wife, Patricia M. Baker; one son, Ronald Baker; one daughter, Gail Baker Katz; four grandchildren; two aunts; and several cousins. Services were Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in Burns Funeral Home Merrillville/Crown Point Chapel. Burial was in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville.
Anna Lee Kaiser
POLAND - Anna Lee Kaiser, 80, of Poland died at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, in Bloomington Hospital. She was born June 3, 1921, in Elizabethtown, Ky., to Nattie Hobart Bayne and Lee Ethel Keith Bayne. Her husband, Morris Lee Kaiser, died Sept. 5, 1997. Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Ratts; two stepdaughters, Diana Kaiser and Linda Brough; one half sister, Pat Smith; two half brothers, Jim Bayne and Jerry T. Bayne; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Whitaker Funeral Home in Cloverdale, with the Rev. Floyd Miller officiating. Roscoe E. Killion
BRAZIL - Roscoe E. Killion, 84, of Brazil died at 11:54 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in St. Vincent Clay Hospital. He was born July 25, 1917, in Center Point to Albert R. Killion and Olym Jenkins Killion. His wife died earlier. Survivors include one daughter, Jean Louise "Judy" Lowe; one sister, Christine Clark; one brother, Albert Killion; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous step grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Moore Funeral Home, with Brother Lyle Monnett officiating. Burial is in Summit Lawn cemetery, south of Brazil. Visitation is noon until services Saturday.
Thelma A. Cahill
Thelma A. Cahill, 88, of Terre Haute died at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in Meadows Manor Nursing Home. She was retired from the Tribune-Star Publishing Co. She was born Aug. 1, 1913, in Bridgeton to David Cahill and Catherine Hayes Cahill. Survivors include cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William D. Cahill; and one sister, Mildred Stout. She attended Garfield High School, had formerly worked for Public Service Indiana for nine years and was a member of AARP. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Callahan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Aaron Wheaton officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Saturday.
Wanda M. Davis
Wanda M. Davis, 85, of Terre Haute died at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, in Union Hospital. She was a homemaker. She was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Vigo County to Ben Trueblood and Lera Bailey Trueblood. Her husband, Francis Leon "Red" Davis, died earlier. Survivors include two sons, Gary A. Davis and his wife, Coleen of Cincinnati and Dudley L. Davis and his wife, Paula of Pimento; two daughters, Nancy Hodges and her husband, Allan of Prairie Creek and Wandell Gabey of Terre Haute; two sisters, Janet Easton of Dallas and Doyne Weir of Prairie Creek; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one stepgreat-great-grandson. She was a member of Prairie Creek Home Extension Club for more than 65 years and Prairie Creek Rebekah Lodge for more than 50 years. She also was a member of Prairie Creek American Legion Post 404 Auxiliary and Mothers of World War II Unit 95. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in DeBaun Funeral Homes Springhill Chapel. Burial is in Prairie Creek West Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
