Helen Elaine James

Helen Elaine James, 79, of Seelyville died Sunday, June 15, 2003, in St. Johns Hospital in Springfield, Ill. She worked for Roots and LS Ayers, retiring in 1999. She was born May 18, 1924, in Terre Haute to Homer and Albertina Kemp. Survivors include two daughters, Susanna James of Seelyville and Joanna Cundiff and her husband, John of East Glen; two sons, Jonathan James and his wife, Connie of Wheatland, and David James and his wife, Marilyn of Art; 10 grandchildren, Aaron, Scott, Bill, Josh, Justin, Levi, Alison, Jon Paul, Autumn and Ian; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Arnold and her husband, Forrest and Marjorie Kearschner; one brother, Ray Kemp and his wife, Joyce; special in-laws, Anna and Mel James, and Earlene James; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Fred Kemp; and a son, Rick James in 2002. She was very active and enjoyed music and traveling. She excelled in academics, music and drama in school and was an active member of the Northview Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Brazil. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Roselawn Funeral Home, with Brother Brian Hobbs officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Francis H. Lightfoot

Francis H. Lightfoot, 81, formerly of Terre Haute died Saturday, June 14, 2003. He retired from Ernst & Young as a managing partner in 1972. He was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Buffalo, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret in November 1973; and his second wife, Ruth in February 2003. Survivors include one son, William Lightfoot; two daughters, Ruth Mackey and Joan Lightfoot; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He came to Terre Haute in 1960, as a manager of the Terre Haute office of Ernst & Ernst accounting firm (later named Ernst & Young). While in Terre Haute he was involved in many community activities including past president of the Rotary Club, past district governor of Rotary District 658, past president of the Chamber of Commerce, organizing president of Junior Achievement, on the board of directors of CCTH, charter member of Strawberry Hill Cannoneers, a member of the Aero Club and a 60 year member of the Elks Club. Memorial services are pending at Hull's Creek Chapel, 1139 Saranap Ave., Walnut Creek, Calif. Memorial contributions may be made to your local Hospice or to the ch arity of your choice.

Lena M. Meissel

Lena M. Meissel, 92, of Terre Haute died at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She retired from Kroger, having worked for 25 years in the meat department. She was born Feb. 19, 1911, in Jasonville to Nicholas Ruth and Ethel Hall Ruth. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Everett Griffith, Ora Staley and Herman Meissel. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kay Griffith of Defiance, Ohio; five grandchildren, Jenny Harden, Susan Montgomery and her husband, Joe, Michelle Kean and her husband, Bill, Mark Griffith and his wife, Teresa and Keith Griffith and his wife, Dawn; six great-grandchildren, Jamey Zurcher and her husband, Mike Miller, Roarke Harden, Sheena Kadi, Joey Kadi, Keith Michael Griffith and Bonnie Rose Griffith. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis A. Harden; her father; and her mother, Ethel Hall Ruth Johnston. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and was a volunteer with Union Hospital for 15 years. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, with the Rev. D. Max Brunton officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Carolyn A. Peters

Carolyn A. Peters, 60, of Fontanet, died at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2003, in Union Hospital. She was born Sept. 5, 1942, in Gary to Charles Jones Jr. and Josephine Caroline Bailey Jones. Survivors include her husband, Charles L. Peters; one brother, David Jones; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Kenneth C. Jones; and grandparents, Joseph and Carrie Bailey. She was a member of Nevins Township Fire Department for 19 years. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Herb officiating. Burial is in Sulphur Springs. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Barbara R. 'Bobby' Power

Barbara R. "Bobby" Power, 71, of Terre Haute died at 8:40 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2003, in her residence. She recently retired from the Vigo County Juvenile Detention Center, where she had been a cook for 19 years. She was born Dec. 6, 1931, in Terre Haute to Lyman Williams and Lillian Loudermilk Williams. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Meloney Loudermilk of Maryland; one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Scott Rayburn of Terre Haute; five brothers, Richard Williams, Billy Miller, David Miller, Jimmy Miller and Marion Miller; four grandsons; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel. Burial is in Mount Olive cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Vista Care Hospice, 3900 S. Seventh St., Terre Haute, IN 47802. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Bessie Marie Lehman

DUGGER - Bessie Marie Lehman, 98, of Dugger died at 1:43 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, in Sullivan Health and Living Center. She was born Oct. 16, 1904, in Ashboro to Lewis McQueary and Stella Underwood McQueary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley O. Lehman, in 1981. Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Lovelace; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Graveside memorial services are 1 p.m. Friday in Fairview cemetery, with the Revs. John Booker and Larry Goodman officiating. Newkirk's Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Maxine Estelle McDivitt

ROSEDALE - Dr. Maxine Estelle McDivitt, 90, of Milwaukee and formerly of Rosedale died Saturday, June 7, 2003, in Columbia Hospital in Milwaukee, following a long struggle with cancer. She retired in 1977 from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where she taught foods and nutrition courses and supervised research in food bacteriology. She was born Aug. 16, 1912, in Rosedale to Joseph Walter McDivitt and Blanche Ree Morton McDivitt. Survivors include a niece, Patricia Ree McDivitt Brown and her husband, Charles Patrick Brown of Franklin, Tenn., and their two daughters, Christina Heather Brown and Shawna Michelle Brown; and a niece, Sara McDivitt McCrocklin and her husband, Michael Tait McCrocklin of Paris, Ill., and their daughter, Shannon Michelle McCrocklin. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Archie Lee McDivitt; and a sister, Margaret Virginia McDivitt Hall. She received her bachelor's degree in home economics from the University of Illinois with highest honors in 1940; earned her master's degree in foods and nutrition from UI in 1941, and in 1952 she earned her doctorate in experimental foods at the University of Wisconsin and remained on the faculty. During a leave of absence from UW she spent two years in the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. She and a colleague co-authored a textbook, "Human Nutrition: Principles and Applications in India", which is now in its third edition and widely used. Following her retirement she lived in Milwaukee the rest of her life. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Saturday at North Shore Congregational Church. She donated her body for research into trigeminal neuralgia, a condition with which she suffered most of her life. Memorial contributions may be made to Trigeminal Neuralgia Association, 2801 SW Archer Road, Suite C, Gainesville, FL 32608; or to any shelter or food service for homeless or struggling people.

Ruby J. Purcell Mills Stice

BRAZIL - Ruby J. Purcell Mills Stice, 75, of Louisville, Ky., formerly of Indianapolis and Clay County, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2003, in Hospice Care of Louisville. She was employed at Pillsbury Baking Co. She was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Clay County to Raymond Purcell and Cecil Trout Purcell. Survivors include her husband, Warner Stice; one daughter, Sally Rabb of Indianapolis; one son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Patricia Mills of Greenwood; three brothers, Jerry Purcell and his wife, Ruthann of Brazil, Jim Purcell of Indianapolis and Paul Purcell of Sullivan; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Steven Mills in 1979. She also was employed at RCA in Indianapolis and Parrish Manufacturing. She attended Staunton High School. After retirement she enjoyed being a homemaker and traveling and had visited all 50 states. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in French Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Roeschlein officiating. Burial is in Summit Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Wednesday.

Pauline C. Vitz

KNIGHTSVILLE - Pauline C. Vitz, 92, of Knightsville died at 9:55 p.m. Sunday, June 15, 2003, in Cloverleaf Health Care Facility. She was a retired teacher. She was born Oct. 3, 1910, in Clay County to Herman Blair and Clara Ley Blair. Her husband, the Rev. Raymond Vitz, whom she married March 11, 1934, died May 20, 1978. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and William C. Neese of Poland; one son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Lita Vitz of Center Point; seven grandchildren, Janet Van Nevel and her husband, Michael, Elaine Berkowitz and her husband, Harry, Gary Allen Neese and his wife, Michele, Mark Vitz and his wife, Karen, David Vitz and his fianc/e, Elizabeth Loudermilk, Brian Vitz and Ashlee Vitz; and two great-grandchildren, Cole Neese and Sam Berkowitz. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Paul H. Blair, on Aug. 5, 1996. She was an active member of St. Mark United Church of Christ and ministered in various capacities in the churches in which her husband served, in Haskins, Ohio, Terre Haute, Poland and Cory. She graduated from Clay City High School in 1929, received her bachelor of arts degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1932, and went on the earn her master's degree. She taught in Cloverdale Community Schools and also at Deming and Fuqua schools in Terre Haute. She lived in Riley from 1964 to 1984, before moving to Terre Haute. Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the church. Burial is in St. Peter's cemetery in Clay City. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Callahan Funeral Home and noon until services Thursday in the church. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark United Church of Christ, 475 S. Fruitridge Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47803.

Frances Louise Miles

Frances Louise Miles, 92, of Greencastle and formerly of Terre Haute died Thursday, July 24, 2003, in her residence. She was born Jan. 31, 1911, in Greencastle to Frank and Louise Dickens Miles. She is survived by one brother, James A. Miles. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greencastle with the Rev. Wilson officiating. Burial is in Forest Hill cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Peter J. Zari

Peter J. Zari, 88, of Terre Haute died at 7:47 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2003 in Union Hospital. He worked more than three decades with Moore's Auto Exchange. He was born April 17, 1915, in Dagus Mines, Pa., to Narcisso and Angelina Zari. Survivors include one son, Michael Zari of Terre Haute and family members in Pennsylvania. He was a World War II Army veteran and lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 and American Legion Post 104. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Virginia. Services are 11 a.m. Monday in Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Estle E. Bennett

SULLIVAN - Estle E. Bennett, 91, of Plainfield died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove. He was born Sept. 22, 1911, in Sullivan County to Arthur B. and Lola L. Roe Bennett. His wife, Mattie Pridemore, whom he married in 1967, preceded him in death. Survivors include two sisters, Nila Anderson of Clay City and Marilyn Osburn of Fairbanks; one brother, Roy Bennett of Connersville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Preceding him in death were one daughter, Karen Lynn Gammie, three brothers, one sister and one infant son. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 197 in Shelburn and Plainfield Baptist Church. Services are 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Hall-Baker Funeral Home in Plainfield with the Rev. Michael Jenkins officiating. Burial is in Clayton cemetery. Visitation is 12:30 p.m. Sunday until services.

Donald W. Bickel

JASONVILLE - Donald W. Bickel, 70, of Jasonville died at 10:15 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2003, in Greene County General Hospital. He was a retired carpenter, farmer and salvage business operator. He was born in Jan. 15, 1933, in Patricksburg to Laymon W. Bickel and Thelma M. Loden Bickel. Survivors include his wife, Lucy E. Edelman Bickel, whom he married Sept. 27, 1953; five daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Jim Bradbury of Hymera, Diana and Kerry Mitchell, Nancy and Dennis Jones and Debbie and Steve Strahla, all of Jasonville, and Cheryl and Jeff Reed of Indianapolis; two sons, Donnie Bickel and special friend Sherri Lannahan of Coalmont, and David Bickel and special friend Sandy Cazee of Jasonville; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Joan Bickel, Larry and Shirley Bickel, all of Columbus, Jack and Wanda Bickel of Coalmont and Bill and Gudrun Bickel of Washington state; 15 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Billy Turley. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a lifelong member of Coalmont Church of God, Gideon International for 21 years, president of Clay County Camp of Gideon International, and was active in Clay County politics for several years. Services are 2 p.m. Monday in McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home with the Revs. Harold Thomas and J.F. Rehmel officiating. Burial is in K of P cemetery in Hymera. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday until services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clay County Camp of Gideon International, P.O. Box 271, Brazil, IN 47834. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
