Sara Joy Wojciechowski
Sara Joy Wojciechowski, 21, of Terre Haute died Friday, May 30, 2003, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born Dec. 7, 1981, in Wiesbaden, Germany, to Paul Edward Wojciechowski and Sue Ellen Johnson Wojciechowski. She was a fifth year architecture student at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., and was working as an engineering intern for Parsons at Newport Chemical Depot. Survivors include her parents of Terre Haute; one brother, Peter Wojciechowski of Terre Haute; special boy friend, Tom Neunaber, and his parents, David and Rae Neunaber; maternal grandmother, Sylvia Johnson of Erie, Pa.; paternal grandparents, Edward and Helen Wojciechowski of Clayton, N.J.; two special friends, Patricia Scott and Megan Korstvedt; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, and the National Honor Society. Services are 7 p.m. Tuesday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Roger Herrig officiating. Cremation is scheduled following services. Visitation is 3 p.m. until services Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alpha Chi Omega-Epsilon Tau Chapter Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Joseph Lewis Roehm
Joseph Lewis Roehm, 82, of Terre Haute died at 2:16 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, in Union Hospital. He was the former owner of Joe Roehm's Refrigeration. He was born March 22, 1921, in Terre Haute to George W. Roehm Sr., and Emma Clemenz Roehm. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Maryanne Evans Roehm, whom he married
Aug. 10, 1947, at the First Baptist Church; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Maurine Roehm of Terre Haute; one sister, Ruth Starkey of Terre Haute; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eugene Roehm and Paul Roehm; and five sisters, Julia Eaton, Esther Garvin, Virginia Hauer, Lucille Lidster and Ethel McCammon. He was a 1940 graduate of Honey Creek High School. He worked at Louden Packing Canning Co., before graduating from Coyne Electrical School in Chicago in 1941 and then working at the United Electric Motor Co., in Indianapolis and at the American Can Co., in Terre Haute. He was employed by Jensen Appliances servicing refrigerators and small appliances for one year, then became a partner in the R&S; Electric Appliance for one year before Joe Roehm's Refrigeration was established in 1947. He was inducted into the Army Oct. 5, 1942, reporting at Fort Benjamin Harrison and receiving basic training at Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. He received Air Force mechanic training for the P-47 at Lincoln (Neb.) Air Base and Dover (Del.) Air Base. In the Spring 1943, he served with the 387th Fighter Squadron (Bluebird) or the 365th Fighter Group, known as the Hell Hawks receiving training at Richmond (Va.) Air Base, Langley Field, Va., and Dover, Del. On Dec. 13, 1943, he left Camp Kilmer, N.J., for Scotland. He served as crew chief of a P-47 named "Clabber Girl." His unit served in the European Theater, including England, Belgium, France and Germany and participated in the Air Offensive Europe, Adrennes Campaign, Central Europe Campaign, Normandy Campaign, Northern France Campaign, Alsace-Lorraine and Rhine Land Campaign. He received six battle stars, the Bronze Star, Distinguished Unit Citation and Good Conduct Ribbon, and was discharged Sept. 23, 1945. He was a member of the Terre Haute Beagle Club, Izaac Walton League of America, St. Margaret Mary's Church, the Refrigeration Service Engineer Society, the Hell Hawks Fighter Group Association, United Association of Journeyman and Apprentices of the Plumbing & Pipe Fitting Industry of the U.S. Local 157, and a life member of Lawton-Byrum Post 972 Veterans of Foreign Wars. There are no services or visitation. Cremation is scheduled. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. Maryanne E. Roehm Nursing Endowment, Indiana State University Foundation, 217 N. Sixth St., Terre Haute, IN 47809. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements.
Norma Mae Davis
CLINTON - Norma Mae Davis, 77, of Clinton died Saturday, May 31, 2003, in Heritage House. She was born May 13, 1926, in Vigo County to Carl Don Ellinger Sr. and Hazel Ellinger. Her husband, William B. Davis, died in 1992. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Paul Stevenson of Rosedale; three grandchildren, April M. Bowens and her husband, Jim of Mississippi, Colleen L. Allen and her husband, Richard of Terre Haute and Troy Dale Stevenson and his wife, Tona of North Dakota; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley Stevenson and Jessica Stevenson, both of Jasonville, Shawn Bennett, Jennie Carrick and Ryan Orr, all of Terre Haute, Dale Meeker of California and Justin Stevenson of North Dakota; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maude E. Martin of Marshall, Ill., and Mary Boyer of Bowling Green; two brothers, William Ellinger of Idaho and Jeremiah Brenton of Rosedale. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 Auxiliary. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday in Roselawn Funeral Home in Terre Haute. Entombment is in Roselawn Memorial Park, Terre Haute. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Brian K.'Goat' Griffin
CLINTON - Brian K. "Goat" Griffin, 59, of Clinton died at 3:54 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2003, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was a retired cabinet maker. He was born Aug. 18, 1943, in Harvey, Ill., to Fred and Augusta Griffin. Survivors include his wife, Peggy L. Wilson Griffin; one son, Brian K. Griffin and his wife, Tracy of Terre Haute; one daughter, Crystal F. Porter and her husband, Matthew of Springfield, Ill.; two grandchildren, Alexander Porter and Madelyn Porter; two brothers, John Griffin and his wife, Marlene of Clinton and Ronald Griffin and his wife, Sallie of National City, Calif.; five sisters, Carol Rathnau, Patricia Kehnett and her husband, Ken, Sharon Hill and her husband, Doug and Cherie Shannon and her husband, Carl, all of Clinton, and Shirley Bass and her husband, Louie of Masedonia, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of Blessed Assurance Baptist Church in St. Bernice, Matthew's Golf Course, Clinton Golf Association and was a 15 year participant in the Civil War Re-enactment. Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Frist Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Peelman, of Blessed Assurance, officiating. Burial is in Walnut Grove cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, American Cancer Society of Blessed Assurance Baptist Church.
Robert Lewis
CAYUGA - Robert Lewis, 78, of Newport died at 9:22 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, in Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System in Danville, Ill. He was born Dec. 14, 1924, in Newport to Milton Lewis and Sara Jones Lewis. His wife, Eileen Compton, died March 3, 2000. Survivors include one brother, Charles "Sparky" Lewis; one niece; and three nephews. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in DeVerter Brothers Funeral Home, with the Rev. Andy Spencer officiating. Burial is in Thomas cemetery in Newport, with military graveside rites by Newport American Legion Post 184. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Madge F. Scobell
BRAZIL - Madge F. Scobell, 86, of Memphis, Tenn., and formerly of Brazil died Wednesday, May 28, 2003. She formerly was the Clay County Hospital administrator, and had been the owner of the Stinson Nursing Home for many years. She was born Aug. 25, 1916, in Clinton to Roy Knox and Flora France Knox. Her husband, Melvin Robert Scobell, whom she married
July 27, 1939, died in December 1980. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Annis and Don Mitchell of Memphis; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Cooper of Napa, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert Knox; and one sister, Beulah Harris. She was raised in Clay County, attended Hadley Town School, graduated from Brazil High School, and received a degree in hospital administration from Columbia University in New York. She had been living with her daughter and son-in-law in Tennessee the past few years. She was a member of First Christian Church, enjoyed playing piano and organ at Bethel Methodist Church, and was a member of Order of Eastern Star Knightsville Chapter. She served on the board of directors of Ivy Tech, was president of the Western Indiana Community Action, a board member of the Area 7 Council for the Aged and Disabled and was one of the first members of the Christmas in Park committees. She founded the Clay County Heart Beat Festival, and she and the Rev. Spicuzza began the Cupboard and Closet fund to assist families in need in Clay County. She won the Newton Award from Area 7 Council. She was the 1999 Daniel Harris Award winner for devotion to the Senior Citizen Center, having written the grant which enabled Clay County to have the Senior Center, where she also served on the board of directors. Services are 2 p.m. today in French Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ernie Rush and Brother Greg Comp officiating. Burial will follow in Union cemetery. Pallbearers are Sam Raybold, Kenny Crabb, Joe Wilson, Bill Sonnefield, Mark Loudermilk and Robert Slack. Honorary pallbearers are Wayne Corbin and Jim Loudermilk. Visitation is before services.
William Paul Iahn
William Paul Iahn, 74, of Terre Haute, died at 12:15 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in Harborside Health Care. He was a retired U.S. Postal Service carrier. He was a carrier for the Tribune-Star. He was born July 10, 1929, in Vigo County to Ernest Iahn and Irene Houston Iahn. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Janice Nipple Iahn, whom he married
Nov. 27, 1957; two daughters, Pamela Nowicki and her husband, Daniel, and Paula Dillion and her husband Brian, all of Terre Haute; six grandchildren, Steven, Matthew, Kaitlyn and Kyle Nowicki, and Nathan and Benjamin Dillion. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1948. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Special Interest Car Club, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Retired Federal Employees Association. Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with the Rev. Monte Vincent officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. Katherine 'Katie' Keller
Katherine "Katie' Keller, 81, of Terre Haute, died at 11:40 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in her residence. She was born July 29, 1922, in Clark County, Ill. to Alva Wilson and Amanda Bowman Wilson. Survivors include three sons, Jerry Keller and his wife Mary Ann, Vernon Keller, and Steven Keller and his wife Lenora; six grandchildren, Jerry Keller and his wife Cindy, Mark Keller and his wife Susan, Scott Keller and his wife Renee, Robin Shamsaie and her husband Shawn, Cynthia Wagner and her husband Jonathan, and Larry Keller; three brothers, Denzil Wilson, Dean Wilson and Robert Wilson; three sisters, Juanita Jones, Charlene Steinhauser and Doris Miller; 13 great-grandchildren, Brant, Dirk, Brittany, Dylan, Katie, Sam, Adam, Julian, Nicholas, Corey, Whitney, Cameron and Stephen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Keller who died Dec. 11, 1991, and one daughter-in-law, Christine Keller who died Jan. 5, 2001. She was a member of the Vigo Womens Bowling League for more than 40 years. Services are 1 p.m., Saturday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with the Rev. Wendell Kirkman officiating. Hershel E. Kirby Jr.
Hershel E. Kirby Jr., 75, of Terre Haute, died at 8:50 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was retired from Peabody Coal Co. He was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Terre Haute to Hershel E. Kirby Sr. and Beatrice Wilkie Kirby. Survivors include his wife Essie Shaffer Kirby; one son, Edward Kirby and his wife Linda of Terre Haute; four daughters, Jean Peters and her husband, Larry, and Shelia Westra, all of Terre Haute, Sharon Walden and her husband, Mickey, and Cindy Kelley and her husband, Herb, all of West Terre Haute; one sister, Mildred Martin of Washington, 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was a Navy veteran and a member of Social Lodge 86, 32-degree Order of Shrine, Greater Men's Bowling League, and former president of the annual Miners Picnic. Services are 1 p.m., Friday in DeBaun Funeral Home Springhill Chapel with the Revs. John Smith and Brandon Kirby, grandson of the deceased. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Jessie Marie Cooper Johnson
Jessie Marie Cooper Johnson, 88, of Terre Haute, died at 6 p.m., Monday, July 28, 2003. She was a homemaker. She was born Jan. 12, 1915, in Terre Haute, to Rom Cooper and Nora Decker Cooper. Survivors include one son, Elmer Leon Johnson and his wife Judith Lou Weir Johnson, one uncle, Joe Decker; two sisters, Opal Clark and Juanita Hayhurst; two sisters-in-law, Helen Cooper and Marcella Decker; two grandchildren, Todd Leon Johnson and wife, Mary Karen Krieg Johnson, Kathy Marie Johnson O'Donnell and husband, Michael Joseph O'Donnell; six great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Marie O'Donnell, Caroline Grace O'Donnell, Evan Joseph O'Donnell, Jake Michael O'Donnell, Andrew Todd Johnson and Maria Julia Johnson, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband, of 64 years, Elmer Johnson, died Sept. 18, 1998. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Ivan Cooper, Paul Cooper and Lyman Cooper. She was a past worthy matron of Prairie Creek Order of Eastern Star Chapter and a member of the Prairie Creek Extension Homemakers Club for 41 years. Services are 3 p.m., today in the DeBaun Springhill Chapel with the Rev. Dale Cormican officiating. Burial is in South Vigo Congregational (Black) cemetery. Visitation is noon to 3 p.m. today.

Roseanna Myers, 85, of Terre Haute, died at 9:03 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born June 28, 1918, in West Terre Haute to Harvey and Mary Belle Groves. Survivors include her husband Jessie Wayne Myers Sr.; two sons, Jessie Wayne Myers Jr. and Kenneth Eugene Myers, and several nieces and nephews. Services are 1 p.m., Friday in Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home. Burial is in Grandview cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
