James Edward Shapland
March 16, 1928 - Oct. 3, 2009

NAPPANEE -- James Edward Shapland, 81, of 751 N. Hartman St. died at 1:27 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 3, 2009) in his home.

He was born March 16, 1928, in Allegan, Mich., to Roy and Dorothy Rose (Bowman) Shapland. He married Edythe LaVonne Greenewalt on Jan. 17, 1948, in Goshen. She died July 24, 1996. He married Erma Elizabeth Wirtz on Oct. 12, 1997, in Nappanee.

She survives along with a daughter, Caroline LeCount of Nappanee; three sons, Roger (Sue) Shapland of Wakarusa, and Steve (Virginia) Shapland and Russell (Shirley) Shapland, both of Elkhart; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, George; two sisters, Mary Alice Nagle and Norma Jean Moore; and one brother, William (Bill) Shapland.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, also at the funeral home, with Pastor David Soliday of Living Gospel Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakridge cemetery.

Mr. Shapland, who served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II, was owner and operator of Swings and Things and had worked in the recreational vehicle industry, retiring from Holiday Rambler. He was a member of Living Gospel Church, Nappanee, and was a past member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Memorial contributions may be given to the church or the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.

Anson Witmer
Aug. 13, 1921 - Oct. 2, 2009

GOSHEN -- Anson Witmer, 88, of C.R. 30 died at 10:50 p.m. Friday (Oct. 2, 2009) in Goshen General Hospital.

He was born Aug. 13, 1921, in Harrison Township to Walter and Alma (Shaum) Witmer. He married Fern (Weaver) Witmer on Aug. 17, 1947, in Gulliver, Mich. She died April 4, 2008.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty (Dennis) Weldy of Goshen; four sons, Donald (Seri) Witmer and Marvin (Deb) Witmer, both of Wakarusa, and Devon (Raymonde) Witmer and Carl (Vicki) Witmer, both of Goshen; one brother, Paul (Edna Faye) Witmer of Goshen; three sisters, Catharine (Maynard) Zimmerman of Nappanee, Mary (Elvin) Hoover of Goshen and Mabel (Roger) Skiles of Wakarusa; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was prededed in death by one son, Terry Witmer, and one brother, Isaiah Witmer.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. The body will lie in state an hour before the funeral service, set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Olive Mennonite Church. Pastor Kevin Yoder of Olive Mennonite Church will preside. Burial will take place in Olive (East) cemetery.

Mr. Witmer was a farmer who helped start and operate Yellow Creek Feed Mill for 26 years. He was a member of Olive Mennonite Church.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Jackie Wilson Disher
Oct. 6, 1957 - Oct. 1, 2009

ELKHART -- Jackie Wilson Disher, 51, of 2250 Cassopolis St. died at 8:43 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 1, 2009) in his home.

He was born Oct. 6, 1957, in Goshen to Charles and Barbara (Brimhall) Disher.

He is survived by three daughters, Tosha Disher of Bristol, Erin Disher of Goshen and Lisa Marie of Elkhart; nine grandchildren; one brother, Maynard (Mary) Disher of Florida; and one sister, Shawn (Michael) Wise of Goshen.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen, with the funeral to follow at 3 p.m.

Mr. Disher was disabled.

Robert D. Yoder
June 27, 1934 - Oct. 2, 2009

ELKHART -- Robert D. Yoder, 75, of Woodland Manor, died at 1:20 a.m. Friday (Oct. 2, 2009) in Woodland Manor.

He was born June 27, 1934, in Goshen to George W. and Ethel "Skeets" (Yoder) Yoder.

He is survived by one sister, Betty Dickison of Goshen; one son, Bobby Larson of Akron, Ind.; one daughter, Vicki; and three grandchildren.

Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen, is in charge of arrangements. A funeral service will be take place at 1 p.m. Oct. 24 in Whitehead cemetery, when burial will also take place. Pastor Dwayne Runkle of Maple Grove Church of the Brethren will preside.

Mr. Yoder, formerly of New Paris, served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was an auto mechanic at Yoder GMC Garage and belonged to Maple Grove Church of the Brethren.

Memorial contributions may be given to the church.

Letta Mae Hoover
Sept. 21, 1938 - Sept. 30, 2009

GOSHEN -- Letta Mae Hoover, 71, of Greencroft, died at 2:50 a.m. Wednesday (Sept. 30, 2009) in Greencroft Healthcare.

She was born Sept. 21, 1938, in Wakarusa to Seth and Ella Mae (Elliott) Hoover.

Miss Hoover is survived by one brother, Orville L. Hoover of Goshen; and one half-sister, Betty L. (Carl) O'Haver of Dunlap.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Ray Hoover.

Miss Hoover attended Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church. She worked at ADEC Industries and as a dishwasher at 20th Century Restaurant. She enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, Sammy Sosa and "The Price is Right, " and playing dominos. She loved to eat out.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Velma Swartz, chaplain at Greencroft, will officiate. Burial will be in Baintertown cemetery.

Memorials may be given to ADEC.

Margaret A. Wixson

GOSHEN -- Margaret A. Wixson, 73, of South Third Street, died Tuesday (Sept. 29, 2009) in Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born Jan. 14, 1936, in South Bend to Evelyn Spychalski. On Aug. 1, 1959, she married Kenneth Wixson, who died in 2001.

Mrs. Wixson is survived by two sisters, Linda Oxendale of Perry, Mich., and Beverly (Bob) Crowel of Phoenix.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Arthur Schmitt.

Mrs. Wixson had worked at Pine Manor and Hoosier Pet Food. She later retired from Nibco. She was a member of Benton Free Baptist Church. She and four other widowed ladies were known as the Golden Girls when they went out.

Friends may call Friday from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral service at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. The Rev. Lenny Krebs will officiate. Burial will be in Benton Lutheran cemetery.

Memorials may be given to The Window.

James R. "Jim" Pressler
May 3, 1923 - Sept. 27, 2009

GOSHEN -- James R. "Jim" Pressler, 86, of Greencroft Drive, died at 11:05 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 27, 2009) in Goshen General Hospital.

He was born May 3, 1923, in Marion to Cornelius P. and Nellie E. (Moneyheffer) Pressler. He married Marjorie Joy Koch in May 1943. She died Oct. 29, 1978. He married Blanche E. Lewallen in November 1979. She died Jan. 5, 2004.

Mr. Pressler is survived by two grandsons, Larry (Sherri) Holston of Edwardsburg, Mich., and Mike (Lee) Wynn of Goshen; five varmints, Timothy Holston, Daniel Holston, Tyler Wynn, Jessica Wynn and Christopher Holston; several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Don Wynn of Goshen; one daughter-in-law, Diane Oxender of White Pigeon, Mich.; and one sister-in-law, Maxine Pressler of Goshen.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Ralph Pressler Jr.; one daughter, Linda Wynn; one brother, Gerald Pressler; and two sisters, Elizabeth Rich and Geraldine Pressler.

Mr. Pressler was a veteran and had attended Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church. He worked as an auto technician at Goshen Auto Electric and Brake.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen, where the funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday. Russ Hunsberger, associate pastor of Brenneman Memorial Missionary Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Violett cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Care at Home/Hospice, Goshen General Hospital.

Michael K. Yoder
April 14, 1985 - Sept. 26, 2009

GOSHEN -- Michael K. Yoder, 24, of East Jefferson Street, died Saturday (Sept. 26, 2009) in his home.

He was born April 14, 1985, in Goshen to Keith and Linda (Kilmer) Yoder. They survive along with one sister, Brandi Yoder of Goshen; and his grandparents, Lester and Florine Yoder and Willard and Sarah Kilmer, all of Goshen.

Mr. Yoder was employed by Doug Yoder Construction and had attended Northridge High School. He loved music, nature, spending time with his friends and playing guitar. He enjoyed bicycling.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to Friday's 10:30 a.m. funeral service, all at Sunnyside Mennonite Church, Elkhart. Pastor Terry Zehr will officiate. Burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery.

Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen, is assisting with arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Shirley E. Espada

GOSHEN -- Shirley E. Espada died in Elkhart General Hospital at 4:23 a.m. Friday (Sept. 25, 2009), after five days in the hospital.

She was born in Goshen Oct. 18, 1937, to Ullin (Ollie) and Grace (Price) Cart.

She married Jorge Espada Sept. 8, 1956.

He survives, along with one daughter, Darla Elaine (Paul) Ammermann of Goshen and Elkhart; one son, Jorge E. (Dorinda) Espada of Mishawaka; three grandchildren; one sister, Kathleen (Marion) Leitch of Statesburo, Ga.; and one brother, Harold (Margaret) Cart of Goshen.

An infant son, Darl Ray Espada, died in 1957. Also deceased are four sisters, Betty June Cart, Esther Smith, Maxine Kilgore and Helen Arlene Smith; and five brothers, Richard "Dickie" Cart, Wayne Cart, James Cart, Carl Cart and Stanley Cart.

She retired from Johnson Controls in 1988 after 12 years. She also worked in the Proof Company division of Essex Wire for 9 1/2 years.

She enjoyed fishing and gardening and loved spending time with family and friends. She spent the first part of her life on a farm outside Ligonier.

Friends of Shirley "Jellybean" Elaine Espada, 71, of 13th Street, may call from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St.

The funeral will start at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Pastor Lenny Krebs will officiate, and burial will follow at Oakridge cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be given to the Espada Grandchildren Education Fund, with checks payable to Jorge Espada Sr.

Larry H. Gard

ELKHART -- Larry H. Gard, 73, of Franklin Street, died at 4:45 a.m. Monday (Sept. 14, 2009) in Golden Living Center.

He was born Aug. 28, 1936, in Elkhart County to Robert Howard and Hazel (Wilson) Gard. On Sept. 7, 1963, he married Marie O'Hare, who died in 1999.

Mr. Gard is survived by one daughter, Ruth (Melvin) Nielsen of Lakeland, Fla.; three grandchildren; and one brother, William (Barbara) Gard of Goshen.

He had worked at Chase Bag, Goshen, and Larry's Second Hand Store, Elkhart. He was a member of Assembly of God, Elkhart.

There will be no visitation or funeral service. Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret, 311 S. Main St., Goshen, is assisting with arrangements.

Birdie H. Clark
Dec. 31, 1919 - Sept. 11, 2009

GOSHEN -- Birdie H. Clark, 89, of Goshen, died Friday (Sept. 11, 2009).

She was born Dec. 31, 1919, in Lincoln County, W.Va., to Homer Albert and Narie Pack Hall.

Mrs. Clark is survived by one daughter, Deborah (Ned) Starnes of Goshen; one sister, Betty Kirk of Huntington, W.Va.; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Hall of San Antonio, Texas, and Tracy Gallup of New Mexico and Hollywood, Fla.; two step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Golden R. Clark, three sisters and three brothers.

Mrs. Clark retired from the federal government's Bureau of Indian Affairs after 25 years of service in Gallup, N.M., and Hollywood. She was a member of the Hollywood (Fla.) Hills United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Central United Methodist Church, 8041 Lynn Ave., Hamlin, W.Va. The Rev. Audria Thomason will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park, Hamlin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the church or the Alzheimer's Association.

Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, Goshen, and West Hamlin McGhee Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, are assisting with arrangements.
