Charles O. Howard, 95, of 53182 Bonvale Drive, South Bend, passed away Friday, April 23, 2004 at 3:05 p.m. in Hospice House, South Bend.
He was born on October 20, 1908 in Rockport, Indiana to Oscar and Lula (Niles) Howard.
Charles married
Ethelyn Steelman on October 22, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She passed away January 20, 1997. They lived in Plymouth from 1937 to 1967 then moved to Florida. In 1992 they moved to Goshen. They owned and operated the Howard Farm and Home Supply, in Plymouth, for 30 years. He mostly ran elevators and grain businesses.
Charles had served on the Plymouth Library Board and was the Center Township Trustee as well as the Democrat Precinct Committeeman. He was a member of the Firt United Methodist Church and held a number of church offices.
Charles is survived by his daughters, Lucy Ann Strait of Boulder, Colorado, and Nancy Sue and Don Reed of Greenfield, Indiana; his sons, Dr. James and Sue Howard of Wooster, Ohio, and Dr. Paul and Christine Howard of South Bend; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brothers, Thomas Howard of Princeton, Indiana and Robert Howard of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Services will be held Monday, April 26, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth, with Rev. Gilbert Washington officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth.
Visitation will be Monday, April 26, 2004 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth.

William L. Geisleman, 42, of 3515 Olive Road, Plymouth, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at 6:36 p.m. in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
He was born on February 21, 1962, in Bremen, to Virgil and Judy (Schmalkuche) Geisleman.
William worked for the Wrights Tree Service, in Indianapolis.
William is survived by his parents, Virgil and Judy Geisleman of Plymouth; his sons, William V. Geisleman of Plymouth and Dustin Huff of Fort Reily, Kansas; his sisters, Crystal and Mike Keller of Marshall, Michigan, Lisa and Rodger Green of Chickamauga, Georgia, and Debra Geisleman of New Orleans, Louisiana; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, in Plymouth, with the Rev. Steven Resner officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth.

Hortense Harper, 88, of 1032 Lincolnway East, Plymouth, passed away Sunday, April 18, 2004, at 11:28 a.m. at her home in Plymouth.
She was born on June 15, 1915 in Plainfield, Indiana, to Ralph and Mary (Hornaday) Hornaday.
Hortense married
Herbert Harper on March 3, 1935. They moved to Plymouth in 1937.
Hortense was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Plymouth. She worked at Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home as a clerk. She volunteered her time as a pink lady at Parkview Hospital.
Hortense is survived by her sons, David and Carol Harper of Sanger, Texas, and John and Linda Harper of Bozeman, Montana; her three grandchildren; and her five great-grandchildren.
Mermorial services will be held Friday, April 23, 2004, at 2:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Plymouth, with DR. E. Dean Fager officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.
Friends may call Friday, April 23, 2004 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 400 North Michigan Street, Plymouth.

Paul E. Steele, 97, of 222 Parkview Street, Plymouth, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2004 at 10:20 a.m. in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth.
He was born on August 25, 1906, in Saint Joseph County, Indiana, to Lafayette and Una (Cripe) Steele.
Paul married
Leona M. Stouder on May 11, 1930 in Wakarusa. She passed away on December 19, 1995, after 65 years of marriage.
Paul was a a graduate of Manchester College and was a teacher and coach in North Liberty, Indiana. He was the building materials manager at Sears Roebuck in South Bend, Indiana. Paul and Leona owned the Burr Oak Hardware Store in Burr Oak, Indiana, from 1945 to 1955 and later Paul was employed by Orville Redenbacher in Valparaiso. He also was an agent for Farmers Mutual Insurance.
Paul is survived by his sons, Kenneth and Victoria Steele of West Seneca, New York and Richard and Carol Steele of Cullman, Alabama; his sister, Mary Vaughn of South Bend, Indiana; four grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his brother, Grant of North Liberty, Indiana; his sister, Helen Bricker of South Bend, Indiana; his grandson, Brian; and his daughter-in-law, Doris.
Services will be held Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth, with Rev. Steven Resner officiating. Burial will be in North Liberty cemetery.

John F. Shinneman, Jr., 68, of Tyler Road, Lakeville, Indiana, passed away at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, on April 13, 2004, due to complications from Leukemia.
He was born on November 9, 1935 to John, Sr. and Lena (Kessie) Shinneman of Lakeville, Indiana.
John was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Rachel Neirynck; his parents; his sisters, Laura, Mary, and Bettie; and his brother, Bill.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude (Haas); a daughter, Deborah Neirynck and her husband Randy of Plymouth; a son Dean and his wife Jeannie of Rochester; and three grandchildren, Ronda, R.J., and Ryan Neirynck of Plymouth.
On March 12, 1959 John was married
to Gertrude (Haas) at a ceremony in Roann, Indiana, by Rev. Herbert Gilmer.
John worked at Coppes Kitchen Company, in Nappanee, for 13 years, 25 years at Redi-Froz in South Bend, and served six years in the National Guard.
John was also well known as "Pop" and "Big John". He enjoyed his family, fishing with his son, grandson, and "rival" fishing buddy, Jack Samm. He enjoyed wood cutting and spending time with his "Coffee Shop Buddies", of which there were many. He was an avid Nascar fan and favored the Earnhardt Teams.
Private graveside services will be held, after cremation, for immediate family and relatives. Burial will be at the Mount Zion cemetery, located across from the County Line Brethren Church in Lakeville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the County Line Brethren Church or any Leukemia Foundation.
Van Gilder Funeral Home has been entrusted with cremation. Pastor Larry Hanson, of the County Line Brethren Church, has been entrusted with the graveside services.
As a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, he will always be missed.

Elaine Stoneburner, 74, of 5417 North Queen Road, Plymouth, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2004 at 1:19 p.m. in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
She was born on April 8, 1930, in Plymouth, to Henry and Florence (Day) Hartman.
Elaine and Homer Stoneburner were married
on June 2, 1948 in Plymouth, and had been married
for 55 years.
Elaine was a member of the Tyner United Methodist Church and the Tyner Rebekah Lodge #865. She worked for the State of Indiana in the Bureau of Motor Vehicle Department as a driving examiner. She retired, in 1997, after working there for 23 years. Elaine was also the Polk Township Trustee.
Elaine is survived by her husband, Homer, their daughters; Theresa (Don) Arthurhultz of Monterey, Indiana, Rhonda (Steve) Cole of Paoli, Indiana, and Kim (Mark) Knight of Tyner, Indiana, their sons; Jeff Stoneburner of South Bend, Indiana and Wayne (Brenda) Stoneburner of Hamlet, Indiana. Also surviving are; her sister, Donna (James) Lamb of Plymouth, 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday, April 15, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Tyner United Methodist with Rev. Cheryl Stratton officiating. Burial will be in the Tyner cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 14, 2004 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth. There will also be visitation at the church one hour before the funeral on Thursday. A Rebekah Lodge Memorial service will be held Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

John F. Zeiger, 79, of 4848 Deborah Lane, Plymouth, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2004, at 11:45 a.m. at his home.
He was born on March 23, 1925, in Mishawaka, to Louis and Emma (Bueche) Zeiger.
John drove a delivery truck for McCord Corporation in Plymouth. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #1162 and the Teamsters of South Bend, Lodge #354. He served his country in the Army during WWll.
John is survived by his brother, Richard and Ruth Zeiger of Bremen, Indiana, his sister, Virginia and Joseph Trippel of Mishawaka, Indiana, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. at Saint Dominic Church, Bremen, with Father Polycarp Fernando officiating. Burial will be in Saint Joseph cemetery, Mishawaka, Indiana.

Esther B. McFarland, 96, of 730 School Street, Culver, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 4:50 p.m. in Miller's Merry Manor, Culver.
She was born on June 22, 1907 in Fulton County to Harry and Flossie (Bick) Zartman.
Esther married
Russell McFarland on May 12, 1924. He passed away on May 23, 1963. Esther was preceded in death by her daughter Virginia Wakefield, her sons; Harry and Francis McFarland, her sister, three brothers, and special friend, Adrian Schlabach.
Esther and Russell owned the Culver City Ice for 32 years. She was the past president of Mother's of World War II in Culver. She moved from Culver to Plymouth in 1965 then back to Culver in 1999.
Esther is survived by 17 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, 26 great-great grandchildren, and her brother, Lawrence Zartman of Colfax, Indiana.
Services will be held Wednesday April 7, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth, with Rev. James Irwin and Rev. Ron Lewellen officiating. Burial will be at the Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F. cemetery.
