Fern L. Ryder
August 13, 1923 - July 29, 2007
Fern L. Ryder, 83, residing in South Bend, formerly of North Johnson Street, passed away at 11:45 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2007 in Morningside Nursing Home. She was born on August 13, 1923 in Brooklyn, Iowa as the daughter of Harry A. & Florence (Flaig) Eaton, and moved to South Bend in 1945.
On November 28, 1946 in South Bend, as Fern Eaton, she was united in marriage to William Arthur Ryder. He preceded her in death on March 11, 1978.
Mrs. Ryder has been a member of Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church for more than sixty years. She always enjoyed singing, and sang in the Church choir, and was active with the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael A. & Victoria Ryder of North Lauderdale, FL, two grandsons, Shawn & Christopher Ryder, and three great-grandchildren, McKayla, Madison and Kaden. Also surviving Fern is her sister, Armon VanHesley of Keakuk, Iowa.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 3, at Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church, 2402 Lincolnway West, South Bend. Rev. Sergio Pereira, pastor will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, and one hour prior to services Friday at the Church.

Carol E. Foegley
July 2, 1930 - July 26, 2007
Carol E. Foegley, 77, residing in South Bend, passed away at 12:33 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2007 in Holy Cross Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was born July 2, 1930 in South Bend as the daughter of Ralph L. & Bernice (Stealy) Hostetler, and has remained a lifelong resident of South Bend.
Carol was employed for many years with Farmer's State Bank in Wyatt, and was also employed with First Source Bank until 2006. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a life member of P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter CZ, and always enjoyed her coffee and baking pies.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane E. & John Foegley-Brown of Evansville, IN, her son and daughter-in-law, David & Sherri Foegley of Fishers, IN, a sister, Marilyn J. Keasey of Havana, IL, and four grandchildren, Jessica A. Brown, Amanda N. Foegley, Jordan M. Foegley, and Nathan D. Foegley. Also surviving are four nieces, Kathy Keasey of South Bend, Patty (Kent) Lowe of Havana, IL, and Peggy Slora of Florida, and Jenny Gongwer of Wakarusa, two nephews, John Foegley of South Bend, and Steve Foegley of Warsaw, IN, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert & Sarita Foegley of South Bend.
The Foegley Family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the Doctors, Nurses, and Staff of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Our Lady of Peace Hospital, and Holy Cross Care & Rehabilitation Center for their outstanding care and friendship offered to Carol the past several months.
Services celebrating the life of Carol Foegley will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 South Twyckenham Drive, South Bend. Rev. Lauren Hall-Davis will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, and one hour prior to services Monday at the Church.

Shirely E. Miller
January 11, 1926 - July 23, 2007
Shirley E. Miller, 81, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007, at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. She retired in 1985 from Bendix Corporation after 30 years of service. Mrs. Miller was born on January 11, 1926, in Chicago, IL, to Walter and Catherine (Clark) Nimtz. She was raised in South Bend by her grandparents, Herman and Johanna Nimtz. On December 16, 1950, in South Bend, IN, she married
Charles L. Miller Jr., who preceded her in death on August 14, 2002. Her brother, Billy Nimtz, half-brother, Michael Nimtz, and half-sister, Charlotte Miller, all preceded her in death. Mrs. Miller is survived by her children, Charles (Susan) Miller, III of Niles, Beth (John) Konrath of Mishawaka and Pam (Larry) Emrick of Cassopolis; and grandchildren, Nate Miller of South Bend, Hannah Miller of Niles, Taylor Cashier of Niles, Emily Emrick of Constantine and Brianna Emrick of Louisville, KY. Shirley loved to shop, have lunch with the girls, and play games with the family. She also loved to play the lottery. She was so looking forward to attending both her granddaughter's weddings this summer. She was a member of UAW Local #9. There will be no services or visitation. Rachel Jones
January 19, 1913 - July 21, 2007
Rachel "Rita" Jones (Rankin), 94, of South Bend passed away peacefully in her home on July 21st with her family by her side. She was born Rachel Rankin in Stevenston Ayrshire, Scotland on January 19, 1913 to Robert Rankin and Elizabeth Gaw. Rita immigrated with her parents and late brother Robert to North Vancouver Canada in 1920. In 1929 Rita moved to the US laying her roots in the South Bend area. After a successful blind date she married
Wilbert "Red" Jones of Herrin, IL on January 15, 1944 and celebrated 40 wonderful years together; Wilbert preceded her in death in 1984. Rita proudly became an America citizen in 1937 and worked for over 26 years at the I&M Electric Company, retiring in 1977 to fulfill her dreams of traveling the world. When she wasn't knitting or reading, Rita was collecting stamps for her passport which saw over 70 countries (many exotic) on 6 continents. From traveling to the top of Machu Picchu in Peru, to riding Camels and Ostriches in Africa to walking the Great Wall of China, she saw it all. Most memorable for Rita were the many cruises and trips she treated her family to. Rita was active in the community having volunteered her time and most importantly her knitting talents by creating and donating items for the NICU at Memorial Hospital. She was member of the Vera Club and the Eastern Star, where she was honored this year with the prestigious 75 year award.
Rita is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Renner (husband Phil) and Mary Jane Stull (husband Jerry) of South Bend. She was the proud grandmother of James Renner (wife Pamela and great-grandson Hunter) of Mishawaka, Ian Bolin (wife Yvonne) of St. Petersburg, FL and Aaron Bolin (wife Emily and great-grandchildren Nathan and Ava) of South Bend. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 25 from 1:00pm-3:00pm with the funeral service at 3:00 pm at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend.

Jack A. Sherwood
February 15, 1933 - July 20, 2007
Jack Sherwood, 74, passed away Friday in Memorial Hospital. He previously worked in sales for J. E. Walz. He is survived by wife, Wilma Sherwood; daughter, Debra (Tracy); 3 sons, Jack Sherwood, Jr., Jerry Sherwood and Jimmy (Christina) Sherwood; step- daughter, Tina Beckwith; stepson, John (Tracey) Weatherwax; six grandchildren; and brother, Gary (Sue) Sherwood. Services will be 10AM Tuesday in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend where friends may call from 4-8PM Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to Center for Hospice & Palliative Care.
Charles M. Bakos
October 2, 1927 - July 20, 2007
Charles M. Bakos, age 79, of South Bend passed away at 5:57 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center from congestive heart failure. Charles retired in 1990 from Auto Value, formerly Car Parts, as a sales representative after 20 plus years. He was born on October 2, 1927 in South Bend to the late Martin and Rose (Toth) Bakos and has lived in this area all of his life.
On April 9, 1955 in South Bend he married
Katherine E. (Franz) Bakos who survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Sandra (Jim) VanVooren of Granger, a son, Richard (Nancy) Bakos of South Bend, three grandchildren, Andrea and Eric VanVooren and Christopher Bakos and one sister, Lillian (Joe) Illes of South Bend.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Palmer Funeral Home, 3718 South Michigan Street South Bend 46614. Burrial will follow at Southlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
Charles was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mishawaka, Potawatomi Kiwanis Club, and the Twin City RV Club. He was a 1946 graduate from Woodrow Wilson High School and served his country in the army during the Korean Conflict. He was also an avid NASCAR fan.

Barbara M. Miles
August 10, 1918 - July 20, 2007
Barbara M. Miles, 88, of Granger passed away in her home. She married
Sylvanus "Bud" Miles, who preceded in death. She is survived by two sons, Kenneth (Carol) Miles of Granger, and Stanley (Diana) Miles of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Gene Miles and Adeina Anderson; and a great-grandson, John Anderson. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Friends may visit for an hour prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
Lindsay Cruz-Rivera
February 25, 2007 - July 19, 2007
Lindsay Cruz-Rivera, 4 months old, daughter of Moises Cruz and Yudice Rivera, passed away Thursday in Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her parents, and by a sister, Dayana Maite at home. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn cemetery, South Bend.
Jack J. Opsahl, DVM
May 7, 1954 - July 19, 2007
Jack J. Opsahl, age 53, of Mishawaka, IN passed away at 10:00 a.m. in Vallonia, IN while on vacation. Jack was a veterinarian for 29 years and practiced the last 24 years at Family Pet Health Center on Mishawaka Ave. in River Park. He earned his Veterinarian degree from Purdue University.
Jack was born on May 7, 1954 in Indianapolis to Richard and Lois (Eaton) Opsahl of Indianapolis and has lived in this area since 1983 coming from Seattle, Washington.
He is also survived by his partner, Kim Loewe, three daughters, Jessica (Dan) Brock of Mishawaka, Lindsay Loewe of South Bend, Megan Loewe of Chicago, one son, Michael Loewe of Chicago, two grandchildren, Isaiah and Sarah Brock, one sister, Betty (Dave) Koehler of Aurora, IN and two brothers, Scott (Angie) Opsahl of Indianapolis and Tom Opsahl of Largo, FL. His daughter, Carmen Elaina Opsahl preceded his in death on March 13, 2001.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9 - 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Thomas A. Truax
June 4, 1923 - July 19, 2007
Thomas A. Truax, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away at 9:46 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2007, in Southfield Village, at the age of 84.
Mr. Truax was born June 4, 1923 in South Bend as the son of Thomas W. & Louise (Scheiddeger) Truax. On May 21, 1955 in Mishawaka, IN, he was united in marriage to Doris E. VanDouser. Together, they enjoyed forty-nine years of marriage until her passing on April 28, 2004.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Poyser, and a brother Donald Truax.
Mr. Truax worked with Jukeboxes and pinball machines his entire career, and retired in 1985 from Diltz & Sons following seven years of employment. He and his wife Doris enjoyed traveling and camping in their motorhome.
He is survived by two daughters, Marianne Truax of Indianapolis, Julie (Max) Ochs of South Bend, and his son David (Cindy) Truax of South Bend. Also surviving are three grandchildren whom he adored, Lauren, Collin, and Caitlyn Truax.
Services for Mr. Truax will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 23, at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Ed Erskin will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, and one hour prior to services Monday, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel.
