Christopher Michael Jachimiak, age 24, residing on West Sample Street, South Bend, IN died at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 28, 2002 as a result of a motorcycle-truck accident on Elder Road & McKinley Hwy, Mishawaka. Chris was born August 16, 1978 in South Bend and has been a lifelong resident. He was a self-employed car salesman. Chris is survived by his mother, Frances (McClish) Ivey of South Bend; his father and step-mother, John & Linda (Dover) Jachimiak of Dunnellon, FL; his companion, Stacy and their son Jeramie at home; three brothers, John (Haley) Jachimiak of Mishawaka, Jason and Michael Jachimiak both of South Bend. Also surviving are his paternal grandparents, Theodore and Dorothy Jachimiak of Dunnellon, FL. Chris was preceded in death by a sister, Tammy Jachimiak and his maternal grandparents, Ray and Mary McClish. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2002 in Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Ronald Drake, pastor of Forestbrook Missionary Church will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Edna Fay Lineback Lakeville, IN Edna Fay Lineback, 93 years old, residing at S. Ironwood Drive, South Bend, formerly of Lakeville, passed away at 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital, South Bend, from natural causes. Mrs. Lineback was born on February 5, 1909 in Wakarusa to the late David and Elizabeth (Bechtel) Miller. She has been a lifelong resident of Lakeville. On May 21, 1939 in Nappanee, she married
Louis J. Lineback who preceded in death on August 11, 1979. One daughter, Sue Ann Cruth, also preceded in death on December 4, 1993. Two sisters, Amanda M. Metzler and Cathrine Stark have also passed away. Mrs. Lineback is survived by one son, Keith L. and Nancy E. Lineback of Lakeville; son-in-law, Michael Cruth of Littleton, CO; four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Sue) Lineback of South Bend, Angela Lineback of New York City, NY, Amy (Wesley) Hout of Miami, FL, and Michelle Cruth of Irvine, CA; and two great grandchildren, Dalton and Austin Lineback. Edna was a school teacher. She attended North Manchester College and received her B.S. Degree in Education from Goshen College. She taught in Centre and Clay Townships, and the majority of her career was at the Union-North United School Corporation in Lakeville. After 30 years of teaching, she retired in 1973. Edna was a member of the Lakeville United Methodist Church where she was active in the children’s Sunday school activities and mission work of the United Methodist Women. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Lakeville and was also a member of the Indiana Teachers Association. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2002 at the Lakeville United Methodist Church. Rev. Martha Lyon, pastor, will officiate. Gerald E. Niedbalski
December 2, 1939 - July 14, 2002
Gerald E. Niedbalski, 62, residing at Oakdale Avenue in South Bend, Indiana passed away at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, July 14, 2002 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, in South Bend after a brief illness. He was born December 2, 1939 in South Bend, Indiana as the son of Eugene C. and Florence C. (Buzalski) Niedbalski. Mr. Niedbalski is survived by three daughters; Tamara (Dennis) Huyvaert of Mishawaka, Kim (Erasmo) Chairez and Tammy Orta, both of South Bend; two sons, Phillip Niedbalski of Newport, Arkansas, William Keller of Indiana; a brother, Mario Niedbalski of Lake Dallas, Texas, nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mr. Niedbalski retired from Bendix Corporation following 22 years of service. He served in the United States Navy. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 18 at Riverview cemetery Mausoleum Chapel in South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the cemetery. Ellsworth W. Berger
September 12, 1911 - July 22, 2002
Ellsworth Worthington Berger, 90 years old, residing on Ontario Road, Niles, MI, passed away at 7:35 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2002 at the Silverbrook Manor Nursing Home, Niles. Mr. Berger was born on September 12, 1911 in Lakeville to the late Jacob and Rose Berger. He has been a lifelong area resident. In the summer of 1964, Ellsworth married
Juanita Clark. She preceded him in death on February 2, 1990. One son, Earl O. Berger, also preceded in death in 1997; two step-children, Charles E. Clark and Jane Clark Hillegas, have also passed away. Ellsworth is survived by one step-son, Al (Dixie) Clark of South Bend; step-daughter-in-law, Mrs. Charles E. (June) Clark of South Bend; three sons, Homer (Kathleen) Berger of Rapid City, SD, Galen Berger of Rapid City, and Gerald Berger of South Bend; one sister, Evelyn Kline of Lakeville; two step-granddaughters, Connie Lynne Clark of Oakland, CA and Debbie Treash of Niles; two step-grandsons, Alan (Jan) Clark of Bethlehem, PA and Charlie Clark of Las Vegas; and step-grandchildren, Nathan and Meghan Clark of Bethlehem. Six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren also survive. Ellsworth loved gardening. For many years, he had a fruit and vegetable stand on Ontario Road in Niles. He was always very proud of his harvest, especially his zucchini and pumpkins. He was formerly employed at Studebaker Corporation and American Motors, both of South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2002 at the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Ed Erskin, pastor of Northway Church of Christ, will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Judith G. Welsh Stone
April 22, 1949 - August 20, 2002
Judith G. Welsh-Stone, 53, residing on E. 9th Street, Mishawaka, IN passed away at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2002 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. She was employed with Steamatic of Michiana for ten years and for the past three years worked at Bryan’s Piano Bar, South Bend. Judy was born on April 22, 1949 in South Bend, IN to Jack and Joyce (Wertenberger) Welsh and lived in this area all of her life. On December 31, 1988 in Mishawaka, IN she married
Harry Stone, who survives. Along with Harry, she is survived by two sons, Joseph A. Strange at home, and Patrick D. Stone of Mishawaka; her mother, Joyce Welsh of South Bend; three sisters, Jeanne Welsh of Granger, Jackie Nuner of South Bend and Janet Auker of Rock Island, IL. She was preceded in death by her father in 1998. Judy was a member of Northway Church of Christ, South Bend; a Clay High School graduate where she sang in the original swing choir and she served as a volunteer with Special Olympics for a few years. Vernon L. Taylor
May 31, 1910 - March 13, 2002
Vernon L. Taylor, 91, residing on South 25th Street, South Bend, IN passed away at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend. He worked for Carother’s Printing Company for 27 years until he bought the business and owned it for several years until retirement. Mr. Taylor was born on May 31, 1910 in Kankakee, IL as the son of Francis and Catherine (Kirkham) Taylor and lived most of his life in South Bend, wintering in Homosassa, Florida for many years. On April 30, 1932 in Crown Point, IN he married
Emma L. Sausman. She passed away on August 24, 1977. Mr. Taylor is survived by a niece, Catherine “Katie” DeWachter of South Bend; 5 nephews, Donald M. Snyder of South Bend, Douglas Rhodes of Florida, Donald Gilpin of South Bend, William Gilpin of Plymouth, and Rev. Richard Adams of Hinesberg, VT; and many dear friends. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Myrtle Adams, Maude Snyder and Minnie Gilpin; and one brother, Floyd Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a member of V.F.W. Post 360, Mishawaka since 1952. He was a World War II Navy Printer, 2nd Class at Guadalcanal. He lived in River Park for 67 years and was a fun person who enjoyed life, fishing, dancing, playing cards and vacationing in Florida. Funeral services for Vernon L. Taylor will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2002 at Palmer Funeral Homes, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, IN. Rev. Charles R. VanZant
July 21, 1914 - July 14, 2002
Charles R. VanZant, 87, of East Bowman Street, South Bend, Indiana, known by most everyone as John, passed away on July 14th, 2002 at 3:40 p.m. at Southfield Village following a lengthy illness. He was born July 21, 1914 in Pontiac to Anna and Arthur VanZant who preceded him in death. On September 12, 1941 he married
the former Carol L. Collier who passed away on August 20, 1994. John had three sisters, Geraldine VanZant, Jeanette Ward and Kathryn Lee, and two brothers, Carlos VanZant and Fred VanZant, all of whom have preceded him in death. John is survived by two sons, John A. (Patricia) VanZant of Gilbert Arizona and James E.VanZant of South Bend along with two nephews, a niece, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a family friend, Drew Leach. John had been employed by General Sheet Metal and Axelberg Brothers Sheetmetal. He had always supplemented his income by selling used cars and after retiring from the sheetmetal business, he founded VanZant Auto Sales in 1963 and retired in 1992. Mr. VanZant was a veteran of the armed services during WWII and a 40-year member of the Pulaski Post 357 American Legion. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 17, 2002 in the Palmer Funeral Home – River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Vivian M. Schell

Vivian M. Schell, 82, of Landers Road, Rogers, Arkansas passed away at 9:20 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2001 at Regency Place of South Bend. She was a registered nurse who worked for the St. Joseph County Health Department for 15 plus years and was a self-employed business woman in Rogers. Mrs. Schell was born July 17, 1919 in South Bend, IN to the late John Peter and Ruby Eleanor (Hull) Vrabel and has resided in South Bend since September coming from Rogers, AR where she lived for the previous 24 years. On April 4, 1941 she married
Robert I. Martin, who preceded her in death on January 6, 1956. Then on August 25, 1965 she married
Sydney L. Schell, who also preceded her in death on August 25, 1987. Mrs. Schell is survived by three step-daughters, Beverly (William) Walter, Sue Ellen Schell, both of Mishawaka and Janet L. (Kevin) Belton of Napa, CA; two sons, Richard A. (Jane Lewis) Martin and John A. (Julie) Martin both of Bloomington, IN; twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Francis “Pete” Vrabel and Robert James Vrabel and one sister, Virginia Metcalf. Mrs. Schell was a graduate of Michael Reese School of Nursing in Chicago, a member of Bentonville Business Women’s Association; Order of Eastern Star Chapter #263, Dowagiac, MI; Daughter of the Nile MAN-TA-NAH Temple #136, Alexander, AR; and a member of Roger’s Christian Church, Rogers, AR. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2001 at Palmer Funeral Homes, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to services on Thursday.
Wayne S. Johnson
February 17, 1931 - August 5, 2002
Wayne Severin Johnson of Fern Way in South Bend, passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2002 in his home, just two weeks following his sister’s death on July 26th. Wayne was born in Elkhart, IN on February 17, 1931 to Agnes “Inez” and John S. Johnson. He was preceded in death by both parents and his sister, Janet, just two weeks ago. Wayne was a graduate of Mishawaka High School in 1949 and of Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN. He furthered his education in the U.S. Army with appointments to Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey then on to NASA – working on the Missels to the Moon! From there to Dallas with Texas Instruments- where he traveled from the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California to Cape Canavaral, Florida many times. His talents were many, he was very well diversified. He assumed his father’s profession as a mechanic at Johnson’s Mobil Station on W. Jefferson Blvd. in Mishawaka, and retired from there in the past few years, to join his brothers in the business of “Toot ‘N Tellum.” He retired from this in the past year. Wayne was a lifelong member and Past Reader of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Mishawaka and the Mother Church of Boston, MA. Recently, when Mishawaka Church merged he became a member of the South Bend Church of Christ, Scientist on North Ironwood, South Bend. He was a true brother and leaves to cherish his memory, his brothers, Roger (Mary Lou) of Granger and Darwin (Betty) of Mishawaka; three nieces and their children, Caroline (Frank), Zachary and Lance Flowers of Mishawaka, Luanne Johnson of Martha’s Vineyard, MA and Diane (Michael), Kaitlyn, Erin and Jared Vincek of South Lyon, MI; his only nephew, Scott Allen of Granger who carries on the family name of Johnson and one aunt, Ellen Hummer of Mishawaka. He was a great brother, brother-in-law, and uncle to all and we shall always cherish all the good things he taught us. There is no one that could replace him – he was God’s gift to us and to our children. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 9, 2002 at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. James Champaigne, Reader, First Church of Christ, Scientist will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Eccles Wiggins

Eulalia “Eccles” Wiggins, 70, residing on Pierce Road, Lakeville, IN passed away at 7:10 a.m. Thursday, April 11, 2002 at St. Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka, IN. She was a homemaker and had previously been employed with Uniroyal Corporation. Mrs. Wiggins was born on January 6, 1932 in McCracken County, Kentucky to the late Lloyd and Ella Lee (White) Fiessinger and has lived in this area most of her life. On July 12, 1951 in Paducah, KY she married
John T. Wiggins, who survives. Surviving with John, her husband of fifty years are two daughters, Dorothy Borton of Jackson, TN and Sharon Shafer of Las Vegas, NV; and one granddaughter, Casey Shafer of Las Vegas, NV. Mrs. Wiggins was a member of Lakeville United Methodist Church where she was also a member of the Ernestine Circle. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 15, 2002 at Lakeville United Methodist Church. Rev. Martha Lyon, pastor of the church will officiate. DeLoss Ray Walters, 91, formerly residing on S. 23rd Street, South Bend and at St. Paul’s Retirement Center, South Bend passed away at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2002 at St. Joseph’s Care Center-West, South Bend, IN. Mr. Walters was a former employee of Studebaker – Avanti for 30 years, and retired from American Motors, Detroit, MI. He was born on November 16, 1910 in South Bend, IN to the late Lee O. and Florence (Carbiener) Walters and lived in this community all of his life. On January 11, 1930 in South Bend, IN he married
Edna Kaiser, who preceded in death on January 3, 1962. Then on August 17, 1962 in South Bend he married
Tillie Anderson who died on October 20, 1991. Also preceding in death was a son, John F. Walters and a brother, Richard Walters. Mr. Walters is survived by two daughters, Shirley Dawson of South Bend and Dorothy (Ralph) Grams of Green Valley, AZ; a son, Thomas R. (Kay) Walters of Lake Havasu City, AZ; a step-daughter, Carol (Robert) Larson of Granger; twenty grandchildren; thirty-seven great grandchildren; two great great granddaughters; two sisters, Blanche Baske of South Bend and Gertrude Brock of Columbia City, IN and a half-sister, Donna Walters of South Bend. Ethylene L. Clady, 89 of North Michigan St., Lakeville passed away at 5:45pm, Wednesday, October 2, 2002 in Miller’s Merry Manor-Plymouth. Mrs. Clady was born May 23, 1913 to the late George & Murl (Pennington) Cohee in Greentown, IN and has lived in Lakeville most of her life. On June 27, 1931 in Walkerton she married
Jay H. Clady who died April 30, 1981. Mrs. Clady was also preceded in death by three sisters; Roberta Cohee, Grace Mendenhall, Elizabeth Martin, one brother; Charles Cohee and three grandchildren; Richard Allen & Laura Elaine Clady and Julie Lynn Wallace. She is survived by four sons, Jack (Wilda) Clady of Mishawaka; Rex (Betty) Clady of Ringgold, GA; Ron (Judy) Clady, and Larry (Rosemary) Clady both of Lakeville. Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren; Karen Seely, Mark Clady, Jacqueline Clady, Terry Rohrer, Ronnie Rohrer, Martha Still, Kimberly Hardin, Kent Clady, Todd Clady, Tammy Clady, Joe Clady, Kimberly Blosser, Steve Wallace, and Joanna Hauguel; twenty four great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; two sisters, Sarah Cohee of Steiger, IL; and Miriam Biel of Lakeville; and a brother, Ralph Cohee of North Liberty, IN. Clayson Seward
September 6, 1924 - August 4, 2007
Clayson “Clay” Seward, 82, of South Bend, IN went home to be with Jesus at 1:26 p.m., Saturday, August 4, 2007 in his daughter’s home. He was born on September 6, 1924 in South Bend, IN to Clayson and Anna Sophia (Gustafson) Seward. On April 28, 1946 in South Bend he married
the former Bettye L. Gordon who preceded him in death on June 17, 2002.
Clay is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Mark) Blackford of Mishawaka, IN; seven grandchildren, David (Julia) Blackford of Shawnee, KS, Joshua (Kelly) Blackford of South Bend, IN, Ashley, Lindsey, Michael, Christopher and Daniel Blackford, all of Mishawaka, IN; four great grandchildren, Isaac, Phoenix, Ava and Ashton.
Clay served honorably in the United States Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart. He was previous employed for Werntz Hardware, the Builders Store, at Midwest Lite from 1950-1980 and in sales for the Christian Center Bookstore from 1980-1986. Clay was a member of Gideon’s International and a member at The Linc, South Bend, formerly Christian Center Church for thirty-seven years where he served as an elder. He sang for many years at church, nursing homes and other churches, as he loved blessing people with his music. He was an experienced woodworker, electrician, plumber, carpenter and builder. Clay and his father built the house that he lived in for sixty-one years and he also loved to build furniture for his family and friends. For twelve years he took wedding photographs for his son in law at Zehring Studio and enjoyed taking pictures of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His family was his life and he really enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Clay was a generous giver and always ready and willing to help people in their time of need. He will be remembered for his strong handshake and genuine love for people.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2007 in The Linc, formerly the Christian Center Church, 530 E. Ireland Road, South Bend. Pastor David Sumrall will officiate. Burial will follow in Southlawn cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2007 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend and one hour prior on Wednesday in the church.
