Astrid I. Heminger

Astrid I. Voreis Heminger, age 84, residing on Refrew Drive, South Bend, passed away at 5:15 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2003 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center where she was admitted on Thursday. She was born May 20, 1918 in Culver, Indiana as the daughter of Gustaf & Linnea (Borin) Swanson and has lived in South Bend since 1951 coming from Culver. On January 19, 1941 in Culver, she married
Glenn W. Voreis who passed away in February 1975. Then on August 29, 1980 in South Bend she married
William L. Heminger. He preceded her in death on February 13, 2003. She is survived by three sons, Kent (Sandy) Voreis; Charles (Francine) Voreis, both of South Bend; and Richard (Kathryn) Voreis of Dallas; TX: a step-daughter, Gail (Raymond) Cunningham of Columbia, SC; a step-son, Thomas (Kathleen) Heminger of South Bend; and eight grandchildren. Mrs. Heminger served as a Distributor for Vanda Beauty Counselor Cosmetics for 37 years. She has been a member of Order of Eastern Star Plymouth Chapter #26 since 1936 where she was also a Past Worthy Matron; a member of the Ladies Auxillary of Avalon Grotto; Zion United Church of Christ and the Women’s Guild of the Church. She was also an avid Bridge Card player. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 7, in Zion United Church of Christ, 715 E. Wayne Street, South Bend. Rev. John von Lackum, pastor will officiate. Entombment will follow at Riverview cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Sunday in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, where members of Plymouth Chapter #26, OES will conduct a memorial service at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services Monday at the Church. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Heminger may be offered to Zion United Church of Christ.
Forrest G. Black
April 5, 1912 - January 28, 2003
Forrest Glenn Black, 90, residing on Chicago Trail, New Carlisle, IN, formerly of Fern Way, South Bend passed away at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at Hamilton Grove Communities, New Carlisle. He was employed in Sales at Levy Ward Grocery Company and then manager of Self Service Wholesale Grocery Company, South Bend retiring in 1972 after 32 years of service in the grocery industry. Mr. Black was born on April 5, 1912 in Cobden, IL to Robert and Lula M. (Ferrill) Black and in 1936 moved to South Bend, IN coming from Cobden. On June 13, 1936 in Marion, IL he married
Sylvia I. Cerney, who preceded him in death on February 22, 2001. Mr. Black is survived by three daughters, Glenda I. (Don) Stanley and Peggy J. (Richard) Wesolowski both of Granger, IN and Janice K. (Robert) Vernia of Carmel, IN; three grandchildren, Rhonda (Thomas) Niespodziany and Randy (Tammy) Stanley both of South Bend, and Tracy (Ron) Rosenfeld of Palatine, IL and four great grandchildren, Emily Grace Rosenfeld of Palatine, Il; Christi Niespodziany, T.J. Niespodziany and Ed Niespodziany all of South Bend. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Black was a fifty year member of Central United Methodist Church where he served on the Treasurer Board, Administrative Board, Pastor Parish Committee, and Trustee’s Board. He was currently a member of Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, South Bend. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Black was an avid golfer and after retirement worked at Erskine Golf Course as a starter. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 31, 2003 at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Sam Oliver will officiate. Entombment will follow at Riverview Mausoleum, South Bend. Friends may call one hour prior to services on Friday in the funeral home. Denver “Denny” Bruce Boling, age 60 of Greenlawn Ave., Osceola died at 8:07 am, March 15, 2003 in Elkhart General Hospital. On November 27, 1942 in Ashland, KY he was born to the late Bruce & Irene (Crabtree) Boling. Denny was employed with Verizon, as a Lineman & Repairman and was a member of the Moose Lodge of Elkhart. Denny is survived by one daughter, Bonnie (Terry) King of Osceola, two sons, Danny (Linda) Boling and Sgt. Craig Allen (Tonia) Boling both of Elkhart, eight grandchildren, two sisters, Susie Boling and Karen Boling, both of Elkhart, two brothers, Ron (Georgia Sue) Boling of Osceola and Rex Boling of Ft. Wayne. Funeral Services for Denny will be at 1:00 pm, Thursday, March 20, 2003 in the Palmer Funeral Home, 1109 Lincolnway West, Osceola. Rev. Leslie L. Waggoner, 80, residing on Apple Ridge Court, South Bend, IN died at 9:55 p.m. Sunday, February 23, 2003 at Regency Place of South Bend. Mr. Waggoner retired July 1, 1988 from Bendix Corporation as Superintendent of Plant Services. He was born on May 22, 1922 in South Bend, IN to Charles Frank and Sabrine (Michalski) Waggoner and lived in this community all of his life. On March 5, 1944 in Paris, Texas he married
Marian Tulok, who survives. Along with his loving wife of 58 years, Marian Waggoner of South Bend, he is survived by his son and his fiancee’, Wayne Leslie Waggoner and Debra R. Hussung of South Bend; two grandsons, Scott Edward Waggoner and Kurt Charles Waggoner, both of South Bend; three nephews, Dana (Jackie) Waggoner, Charles (Sylvia) Waggoner and Michael (Christine) Waggoner; and one cousin, Elizabeth (Harry) Koehler. Mr. Waggoner was preceded in death by his sister, Ethel Jane Howlett. Mr. Waggoner was a member of First Presbyterian Church, South Bend where he served as Deacon, Elder, past Clerk of Session and with 4th Sunday Usher’s. He was a member of the American Production Inventory Control Society and served as Treasurer and Secretary. He was also a member of Bendix Salaried Retirees Club, St. Joseph Lodge #45 F&AM; Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite; Elks Lodge 235; Jaguars Clubs of Indiana and Michigan.
Cheryl A. Samarich
August 26, 1955 - February 18, 2003
Cheryl Ann (Vitou) Samarich, age 47, passed away suddenly early Tuesday morning, February 18, 2003 in her home. She was born August 26, 1955 in South Bend, IN as the daughter of Arthur L. & Dona S. (Smith) Vitou, and has been a lifelong resident of South Bend. She graduated from LaSalle High School in 1973. On September 8, 1979 at the Century Center, South Bend, she married
Millard B. Samarich. She is survived by her loving husband Millard, her daughter Angela Ann Samarich at home, and her son, David E. Samarich also at home. Also surviving is her mother Dona S. Vitou of Elkhart, a sister, Carol (David) Wozniak of Granger; two brothers, Michael (Barbara) Vitou of Middlebury; Barry (Cindy) Vitou of Elkhart; her mother-in-law, Doris Samarich of Mishawaka; three sister-in-laws, Mitzi Rickhoff and Judy DeDonato both of South Bend; Sally Sprong of Michigan City; and a brother-in-law, John Samarich of South Bend; three nieces, and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur L Vitou on August 1, 2000. Cheryl was Co-Owner with her husband of A-Appliance Sales & Service, Mishawaka. She was a fun-loving person who always had a smile on her face whenever you saw her. She was very bubbly, and never knew a stranger. The most important things in her life was her family and her dog and cats. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Cremation will follow. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Bernice L. Eichorst, 82, residing on Alpine Drive, South Bend, IN passed away at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Southfield Village, South Bend, IN. She retired in 1985 as a cook from John Marshall Elementary School following 26 years of service. Mrs. Eichorst was born on February 14, 1920 in South Bend, IN to Orben and Nina Mae (Rogers) Bennett and lived in this area all of her life. On March 26, 1941 in South Bend, IN as Bernice Bennett she married
Clarence Eichorst, who survives. Surviving along with her husband of 61 years, Clarence, are a daughter, Dixie L. Eichorst of South Bend; two sons, Terry A. (Yvonne) Eichorst of Houston, TX and Thomas G. (Carol) Eichorst of Elkhart; eight grandchildren, Bridget Eichorst and Jason Eichorst both of Houston, TX, Michelle Eichorst, Jessica Eichorst, Bryan Eichorst, Daniel Eichorst, Timothy Eichorst and Brittney Eichorst all of Elkhart; two sisters, Virginia Fagan of Lakeville and Evelyn Day of South Bend; and two brothers, Gerhart Bennett of Mishawaka and Orben Bennett of South Bend. Mrs. Eichorst was a member of Grace Brethren Church, South Bend since 1958. She cooked for Grace Brethren Youth Camps and enjoyed being around all the kids. She was a member of National Indiana Food Service Association and was past president. Funeral services for Mrs. Eichorst will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Grace Brethren Church, 1701 E. Ireland Road, South Bend, IN 46614. Pastor Roger Krynock will officiate. Gene S. Fair, 96 years old, residing in Kalamazoo, MI, formerly of North Liberty, passed away at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at the Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo. Mrs. Fair was born on July 1, 1905 at her home in Dearborn, MI to the late William and Amy (Mickles) Seabert. She has resided most of her life in North Liberty. On April 21, 1954 in Angola, IN, she married
Frederick A. Fair who preceded in death on April 4, 2001. One daughter, Mildred Timmons, preceded in death in 1968. Two sisters, Bessie Jackson and Mildred Seabert, and three brothers, Kenneth, Milo, and Edwin Seabert, have also preceded in death. Mrs. Fair worked at the V.A. Hospital in Dearborn in her younger days. She was a wonderful homemaker all of her life. Mrs. Fair is survived by four grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, and one sister, Barbara Connoly of Santa Barbara, CA. Private family services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 8, 2002 at the Palmer Funeral Home, 314 S. Michigan Street, Lakeville, IN. Rev. James Fair will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Sumption Prairie cemetery, South Bend. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the services at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Gene S. Hugo O. Erickson

Hugo O. Erickson, 76, residing on Birchwood Drive, Mishawaka, passed away at 8:55 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002 in St. Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka. He had various employment with nursing homes and in hospital administration and most recently worked at Jordon Ford in Mishawaka. He was born October 13, 1925 in Mishawaka as the son of John R. & Meredith (O’Donnell) Erickson and has lived in the area all of his life. On April 7, 1950 he married
Joan R. Kindig. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan; two sons, Rick (Patricia) Heck; and Jeff Erickson both of Mishawaka; and two grandchildren, Roxanne (John) Pallo and Ross O. Erickson. Mr. Erickson was Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #235; attended River Park United Methodist Church; and served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. Memorial Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 24 in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave. South Bend. Rev. Phil Abram, pastor of River Park United Methodist Church will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions in memory of Hugo O. Jacqueline Gamble, 74, residing on South 30th Street, South Bend, IN passed away at 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2002 in her home following a two year illness. Mrs. Gamble worked for Sawyer’s Meats at the Farmer’s Market for over thirty years. She was born on December 7, 1927 in Haysi, Virginia to the late Guy and Guida (Puckett) Burnett and has resided in the the South Bend area since coming from Virginia in the 1950’s. On December 7, 1955 in Mishawaka, IN she married
Warren E. Gamble, who preceded her in death on June 3, 1998. Mrs. Gamble is survived by her son, Michael J. Gamble of South Bend; a sister, Martha (Donald)Ellar of South Bend; a brother, Wayne (Margaret) Burnett of Ocala, Florida and several nieces and nephews, including Kimberly Swaim. She was preceded in death by her sister, Guyeth Molton and four brothers, Gervis Burnett, Johnny Burnett, Hoyt Burnett and Gene Burnett. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 24, 2002 at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, IN. Rev. Ed Erskin will officiate. Robert D. Hartman

Robert Dale Hartman, 83, residing on East 4th Street, Mishawaka, IN passed away at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2002 in his home after a brief illness. Mr. Hartman retired from farming in 1953 and was employed as a factory worker, retiring May, 1982 from South Bend Lathe. He was born on January 12, 1919 in Madison Township, St. Joseph County, IN to the late Harvey M. and Cora (Kindig) Hartman and was a lifelong area resident. In 1941 in Elkhart County, IN he married
Dorothy Lucille Hartman, who preceded in death on January 4, 1965. Then on August 14, 1965 in Mishawaka, IN he married
Helen N. Malcolm who preceded in death on December 27, 1999. Mr. Hartman is survived by his daughter and son-in law, Carol and James Nilles of Mishawaka; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Donna Hartman of Mishawaka; four stepsons, Walter (Pauline) Szlanfucht of South Bend, Jack (Shirley) Szlanfucht of Osceola; Bill (Karen) Peak of New London, North Carolina and Larry (Vicky) Peak of South Bend; six grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Hartman was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Wise and Kathryne Walker; and three brothers, Carl, Floyd and William Hartman. Mr. Hartman was a former member of Cedar Road Missionary Church, Osceola. His hobbies included stock car racing, fishing, yard work and farming. Mrs. Hughes was born on November 18, 1930 in South Bend, IN to the late Trevor and Hazel (Hyatt) Jones and lived in this community most of her life. On January 21, 1950 in South Bend, IN as Florence Jones, she married
Paul Hughes who preceded her in death in August of 1977. Florence is survived by a daughter, Sherry Riddell of Florence, AL; a son and his wife, Gary and Charity Hughes of Three Rivers, MI; eight grandchildren, Tammy (Joe) Hamman and Jon Riddell, both of Florence, AL, Courtney Hughes of Schoolcraft, MI, Michael Hughes of Elkhart, IN, Kyle Hughes of Galveston, IN, Emily Truman of Elkhart, IN, Sierra Datema and Cheyenne Datema, both of Three Rivers, MI. Also surviving are four sisters, Grace (Cornelius) McWilliams and Beverly (Eugene) Freshour, both of South Bend, Delores Young of Niles, MI and Jeanette (Bruce) Rohde of Logansport, IN; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Hughes; a son, William Hughes; a grandson, Robert Paul Riddell; a sister, Arlene Peterson; a brother, Arnold Jones; a brother-in-law, Norman Young and a son-in-law, Robert Riddell. Funeral services for Florence Hughes will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2002 at Palmer Funeral Homes, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, IN. Rev. John Staples, pastor of New Life Christian Fellowship, Mishawaka will officiate. Friends may call from 2-4 and 5-8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Hughes may be given to New Life Christian Fellowship, 54700 Fir Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545. A very special thank you to Dr. Reidy and to St. Joseph Hospital, Mishawaka, IN for the wonderful care they gave Florence and to the members of her family at this very difficult time in our lives. God saw Mom was getting weary,
So He did what He thought best.
He came and stood beside her,
