Raymond L. Gross
PLYMOUTH — Raymond L. Gross, 87, of Plymouth, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, at 6:15 p.m. at
Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; two sons, Robert Gross of Plymouth and Donald and Connie
Gross of Plymouth; and his grandson, Matthew and Meghan Gross of Fort Wayne. He was
preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Gross, who passed away at the age of 3.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home,
Plymouth, with the Rev. Father William Kummer officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Hill
cemetery, Plymouth.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, Dec. 27, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Van Gilder
Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563

Charles H. Miller
PLYMOUTH — Charles H. Miller, 96, of Plymouth, died at Miller’s Merry Manor on Saturday,
Dec. 22, 2007.
He is survived by Stephen and Janice Miller of Plymouth.
There will be no visitation or services; private family services only.
Interment will be at New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Arrangements are being handled by Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Plymouth.
Walter H. Lawmaster
NAPPANEE - Walter H. Lawmaster, 82, of Nappanee, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007 at his winter
home in Naples, Fla.
Survivors include: his wife, Barbara J. Lawmaster; daughter, Kimberly (Dennis) Bilinski of
Bremen; son, Jeffrey A. (Charity) Truhn of Florida; five grandchildren; a brother, Oliver (Ethel)
Lawmaster of California; sisters: Arline Johnson of Indiana and Evelyn Lawmaster of Naples,
Fla., as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 5 at 10 a.m. at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder
Funeral Home, Nappanee. Visitation is one hour prior to services.
Inurnment will be in Union Center cemetery, Nappanee. Military graveside rites will be
conducted by the Nappanee American Legion.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
Carroll A. Ewing
KNOX — Carroll A. Ewing, 89, of Knox, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2007 in his home. Mr.
Ewing was born April 21, 1918 in Crumstown to William and Blanche (Christopher) Ewing and
lived in the area all of his life. On Dec. 18, 1941 in Mishawaka, he was married
to the former
LaVerna Myers, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Cathy (Gerald) Benko of Knox;
three sons: Gerald (Judy) Ewing of Oak Grove, Richard (Dolly) Ewing of Culver and Jeff (Renee)
Ewing of Argos; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
Mr. Ewing owned and operated C & L Food Center in Oak Grove for 52 years. He was a U.S.
Army veteran of WWII. He was formerly trustee of Washington Township in Starke County, a
former member of the Washington Township Advisory Board, an original member of the
Washington Township Fire Dept., the former Democrat Precinct Committeeman of Starke
County, past member of the Starke County Election Board and member of the Knox American
Legion and VFW.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. CST at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet
Chapel. Friends may call Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services in the funeral home.
Burial will take place after the service in Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth, with military graveside
services being conducted.
Mose Mast
GOSHEN — Mose Mast, 83, of Goshen, died at 4:29 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2007 at Greencroft Health
Care, Goshen.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; son, LeRoy Jay Mast of Hammondsport, N.Y.; daughter,
Barbara (Dallas) Schlegel of Lincoln, Neb.; stepson, Willis Eugene Miller of Rickreall, Ore.;
stepdaughters: Charlotte Lucile (Leland) Martin of Brownsburg, Geraldine “Jeri” (Mike) Raabe of
Lakewood, Colo. And Jeanette Sarita (Russell) Teall of Plymouth; brothers: Andrew Mast of
Topeka, John Mast of Topeka and Henry Mast of Goshen; sister, Ada (Elmer) Miller of Ligonier;
13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation is Sunday, Dec. 30 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home,
Goshen and Monday, Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. at Waterford Mennonite Church. Funeral services are
Monday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Miller cemetery, Middlebury.
Memorials may be made to Greencroft.
Harold L. "Red" Shafer
TIPPECANOE — Harold L. “Red” Shafer, 71, of Tippecanoe, died at 11:21 a.m. Monday, Dec.
24 at Kosciusko Community Hospital. He was born Nov. 29, 1936 in Fulton County to Kenneth
and Ruth (Boganwright) Shafer. On June 29, 1957 in Tippecanoe, he married
Carolyn Sue Ward.
Harold had worked at Niff-Corr, Tippecanoe, since 1958 and in 1974 he became president and
owner. He was a member of the Mentone First Baptist Church, the NRA and Raccoon Run Golf
Course in Warsaw. He was a 1955 graduate of Tippecanoe High School. He was also an avid
golfer and was the church candy man.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue Shafer of Tippecanoe; sons: Harold L. "Hal" (Zulema)
Shafer, Kent (Lori) Shafer and Jon (Denise) Shafer, all of Tippecanoe; eight grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rosalee Overmyer of Tippecanoe.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Myron Overmyer.
Visitation is Thursday, Dec. 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St.,
Mentone. Funeral services are Friday, Dec. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor
Michael Wilhite officiating. Burial will be at the Mentone cemetery.

Alfred L. Vermillion
PLYMOUTH — Alfred L. Vermillion, 97, of Plymouth, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at 10:20 a.m.
at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
He is survived by several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; his
brother, Clyde and Dorothy Vermillion of Plymouth; and his sister, Minnie Campbell of South
Bend.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 28 at 3 p.m., at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in
Plymouth. Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth. Visitation will be from noon to 3
p.m. Friday, Dec. 28 at the funeral home.
Evelyn G. Burroughs
ARGOS – Evelyn G. Burroughs, 98, a lifelong resident of Marshall County, residing on W.
Walnut St., Argos, died in the Culver Miller’s Merry Manor, at 5:25 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26,
2007. Evelyn had been in failing health since October of this year.
Born in Argos on Aug. 8, 1909, Evelyn was the daughter of Willis Wright and Anna (Forsythe)
Whisman.
She graduated from Argos High School with the class of 1927.
On Oct. 26, 1927, she and Ray David Burroughs were married
in Niles, Mich. They
honeymooned in Washington State. Ray died on Jan. 15, 1993, after 65 years together.
The couple owned and operated the Burroughs Insurance Agency of Argos for many years.
After raising their four children, Evelyn became a certified medical assistant at Miller’s Merry
Manor Nursing Home in Plymouth where she retired after working for 10 years.
She was dedicated to her family and her church, the Walnut Church of the Brethren, where she
had been a member for more than 80 years. She and Ray were deacons and served in various
capacities.
Ray and Evelyn loved to fish in the northern lakes of Michigan and Wisconsin. For many years
they spent alternate winters in Florida and California traveling the states in between.
She loved to bake pies and cookies. An avid reader, she also enjoyed working crossword
puzzles.
She was a longtime member of the Marshall County Historical Society and the Walnut Twp.
Home Economics Club.
Evelyn is survived by three daughters and a son. They are Connie Caldwell Lowe of Bradenton,
Fla., Susanna R. and Loren Carswell of Culver and Mary and Richard Richey, Westminster,
Calif., and Willis and Mary Sue Burroughs of Argos.
Thirteen grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one great-grandson, Michael Caldwell, two sisters:
Ruth Harley Warner and Toilie McGriff and two sons-in-law: Fred Caldwell and Herbert Lowe.
The family will receive friends and share memories on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, in the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Robert Rice, pastor of the Walnut Church of the
Brethren, Argos, will follow visitation at 3 p.m. in the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Walnut cemetery, Argos.
Memorial gifts may be made to the music department of the Walnut Church of the Brethren.
Laura Louise Gunder
PLYMOUTH — Laura Louise Gunder, 78, of Plymouth, died at 5:39 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26,
2007 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, following a three-year illness. She was born Oct. 15,
1929 in Culver to Clarence C. and Olive (Lake) Kline. On May 20, 1947, she married
Richard L.
Gunder, who preceded her in death July 15, 2003.
Living most of her life in Marshall County, Laura was a homemaker and worked as a florist for
Andelohr Florist in Culver and Flowers by Stephen in South Bend. She played the piano for the
Culver Military Academy fine arts department during the 1970s. She was the secretary of the
Maxinkuckee Yacht Club in Culver during the 1960s. She made many quilts and donated them
to babies with AIDS and knitted many hats for needy children of Union Township and The
Neighborhood Center in Plymouth. She attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church of Culver
and was a graduate of Culver Community High School class of 1947.
She is survived by one daughter, Valerie (Dane) Avery of Dallas, Ga.; two sons: Craig (Martha)
Gunder of Red Lion, Pa. and Todd (Cassie) Gunder of Culver; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren;
one brother, Charles (Donna) Kline of South Bend; and two sisters: Virginia
Bullock of Plymouth and Brenda (Bob) Wynn of Culver.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Andrea Kay Gunder; and two
great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be held.
Burial will take place at a later date in the Culver Masonic cemetery, Culver.
