Kay L. Smith
ORLANDO, Fla./CULVER — Kay L. Smith, 60, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007. She
was born in Plymouth on April 17, 1947 to Le Roy and Lorraine Thomas. Le Roy preceded her in
death. She graduated from Culver Community High School in 1965 and was also a graduate of
Indiana State University and Purdue University.
Kay was a longtime resident of Orlando, Fla. And a professor of English Literature for 28 years
at Valencia Community College. She enjoyed traveling, books and movies/theatre/especially
Shakespeare and the many versions of “Hamlet” and gave a variety of presentations all over the
country.
She is survived by her mother, Lorraine Thomas of Culver; two sisters: Bev (Nick) Knoerzer of
Morocco and Joyce (Evan) Lowry of LaPorte; two brothers: Greg Thomas of Kewanna and Bob
(Gwen) Thomas of Argos; numerours nieces, nephews, aunts, an uncle, cousins and
friends.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Hospice of your choice or to the American Cancer
Society. Kay will be greatly missed by her loving family and many friends.
As was her wish, a private service will be held at a later date.
The Bonine-Odom Funeral Home, Culver, is in charge of the arrangements.
Richard W., Sr. McNeal
PLYMOUTH — Richard W. McNeal Sr., 66, of Plymouth died Friday, Nov. 23 following an illness.
He is survived by daughters, Frances Kratzchmar of Oregon, Barbara and Benny Cripe of
Ligonier, Lisa Huddleston and friend Kevin Stewart of Bourbon; and sons, Richard McNeal, Jr of
Ligonier and Woodward McNeal II of Ligonier; and 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Sisters Shirley LaBere of Walkerton and Kate Ward of Knox and brother Gene McNeal of
Plymouth also survive.
Visitation is Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at New Oakhill cemetery Chapel,
Plymouth.
Services are Tuesday at noon at the chapel. Burial will be at New Oakhill cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Parkview Hospice of Noble County.
Frances M. Miller
ROCHESTER — Frances M. Miller, 85, of Rochester, died Friday, Nov. 23 at Hickory Creek,
Rochester.
She is survived by one daughter, Christine Miller LaRoche of Bloomington, one son, John “Phil”
Miller of Lake Worth, Fla., three sisters, Elvira and Gerald Romine of Mentone, Julia Faulkner of
Bremen and Charlotte and Richard Massey of Hot Springs, Ark., one brother, Edward and
Juanita King of Rochester, along with several nieces and nephews.
Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Good Family Funeral Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be at Rochester IOOF cemetery.
Bruce R. Scott
PLYMOUTH — Bruce R. Scott, 57, of Las Vegas, formerly of Plymouth, triumphed over cancer
and went home to his God and to be with his parents, Ed and Barbara, and his in-laws, Irene and
Joe Campeau, on Friday, Nov. 23, at 2:51 p.m. Bruce remains in spirit with Susie, his wife of 26
years, and his children, Ashley and Brett.
Bruce was born in Montague City, Mass., on Dec. 5, 1949. He graduated from Plymouth
(Indiana) High School in 1968 and worked for Air Canada, PSA and U.S. Air/U.S. Airways in
Chicago, LA, Las Vegas and South Bend.
Smiles, grins and good feelings are left in Bruce's path. All he met remember that he lived by the
philosophies that "If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane." And he allowed all of us to smile.
He filled our lives with his love of photography and music — especially the Sorry Brothers Band.
His sister, Teddy, brothers Bob, Tim, Jim and Phil, along with all of his friends and extended
family joined with Susie, Ashley and Brett to remember him and celebrate his gifts to their lives in
a funeral Mass at St. Viator on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at 11 a.m. God Bless him.
Peter A. Nicodemus
AKRON — Peter A. Nicodemus, 85, of Akron, died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24 at Lutheran
Hospital, Ft. Wayne.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Nicodemus of Akron, one daughter, Charlotte Givens of
Akron, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughters and three sisters: Lucile Lewis of
Kewanna, Louise Nicodemus of Akron and Grade Edgar of Atlanta, Mich., as well as nieces and
nephews.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to services in the funeral home
Thursday.
Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester
with the Rev. Terry Canfield officiating.
Burial will be at Athens cemetery.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the LeRoy Shelton American Legion and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Viola Fern Gross
PLYMOUTH — Viola Fern Gross, 90, died at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, at the home
of her daughter in South Bend.
The daughter of Howard A. and Mary E. Lambert Snider, Viola was born on Feb. 14, 1917, at
Deer Creek, Ind. A resident of the Plymouth and LaPaz areas most of her life, she had attended
West High School.
Viola had worked as an Aide in area nursing homes. She liked to keep busy and spent her time
crocheting, doing volunteer work at Garden Courts West and for REAL Services. She also
enjoyed playing the piano, and had played at the North Salem Church of God for several years
and at the Plymouth Moose Lodge, where she was a member of the Women’s auxiliary.
A loving mother, Viola is survived by five daughters, two sons and numerous grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Her children are: Shirley (Cliff) Bean of
Mishawaka; Leroy Gross of Walkerton; Barbara (Harry) Fisher of Plymouth; Janet Boyer of
South Bend; Linda Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona; Mary (Jerry) Krick of Plymouth; David Gross of
South Bend and Dale (Tammy) Gross of Rochester.
Four sisters and a brother survive as well. They are: Betty Jean Mitch of Ft. Wayne; Joann
Dillman of Ohio; Donna Martin of Churbusco; Mildred Books of Plymouth and Manford Snider of
Ft. Wayne.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sons: Rodger, Wilbur and Frank; and two
brothers: Donald Snider and Verlie Snider.
Viola’s family invites her friends to come and celebrate her life and share memories with them on
Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007 from 4 to 8 p.m., and after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at the
Johnson Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A Women of the Moose
memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, in the funeral home.
Funeral services, officiated by Rev. Charles Krieg, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the
funeral home.
Interment will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Viola’s memory may be made to Moose Heart or Hospice.
Clarence R. Pippenger
Clarence R. Pippenger, 89, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007 at his home in New Canaan, Conn. Born
June 4, 1918, in Nappanee, he was the son of the late Clayton and Dinah Frazier Pippenger.
He graduated from Michigan State University in 1941 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.
After additional training at MIT, he served in the European theatre in World War II and was
involved in the early development of radar technology. Following the war, he pursued a career in
engineering for 20 years, before starting a construction business. Friends will remember that he
was always ready for a good conversation about adapting equipment for special construction
needs.
Mr. Pippenger is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jennie Tanner Pippenger of New Canaan; a
son, Richard A. Pippenger of Danbury, Conn.; two daughters, Jeanne L. Bech of New Canaan
and Phyllis A. Jensen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, James Pippenger of Cedar Rapids,
Iowa; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Nov. 30, 2007 at the New Canaan Methodist Church,
South Ave, New Canaan at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Lakeview cemetery, New Canaan.
There will be no calling hours.

Annabelle (Harbaugh) Youngman
Annabelle (Harbaugh) Youngman, 86, of Elkhart died at home on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007 at 1:15
p.m.
She is survived by daughters: Patricia Tague, and Deborah Davis, both of Elkhart; son, Charles
(Karen) Youngman; and step-son, Gerald (Penny) Youngman, both of Goshen; step- sister,
Bonnie Bope of Plymouth: sisters-in-law: Helen Harbaugh of Elkhart, Lou Gordon of Bremen and
Anna Ruth Hall of Plymouth; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Johnson-Danielson Funeral
Home, Plymouth.
Burial will follow in the New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Herbert L. Zechiel
WYATT — Herbert L. Zechiel, 86, of Wyatt, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, at his residence.
Survivors include his wife: Ruth; daughter, Kay (Bob) Harrell, of Maineville, Ohio; sons: Lee
(Susan) Zechiel, of Gurnee, Ill. And Rev. Tim (Marie) Zechiel, of Steelville, Ill.; seven
grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, at 11a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Woodland.
Burial will follow at St. Paul cemetery in Woodland. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Thursday at Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen and one hour before the service at St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Woodland.

Harvey E. Phillips
INDIANAPOLIS — Harvey E. Phillips, 67, of Indianapolis, passed away Nov. 26, 2007. He was
born in Plymouth to Harvey E. and Frances (Hanes) Phillips. Harvey was a president of R.F.
Young Company, who were manufacturer representatives for 34 years. Harvey was a 1958
graduate of Plymouth High School. He participated in all varsity sports and was the senior class
vice president. Mr. Phillips was a 1963 graduate of Indiana University where he was a member
of Sigma Nu fraternity. He was also a member of the Indiana Alumni Association and served as
a member of the Indiana National Guard.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Sally J. (Mellish) Phillips; his step-mother, Mildred Phillips;
and his sister, Stephanie Mackey.
Funeral services will be held at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary, 71st at Keystone on
Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 6:30 p.m. Friends may visit the mortuary Wednesday from 3:30 to 6:30
p.m.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society or to the Community
Hospital Hospice Program.
Mr. Phillips stated: I feel blessed to have grown up in Plymouth and thanks to all my friends in
the Plymouth community for all of their cards and prayers.
There will be a celebration of Harvey's life with friends at Pat's Bar in LaPaz Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
