Iona M. Cole
NORTH JUDSON – Iona M. Cole, 68, of North Judson, died Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Arthur
& Ethel Horton VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso.
She is survived by her mother, Helen Borton of New Carlisle; children: Velma Zehr of
Middlebury, Nancy Cole of Hanna, Cecelia Moroni of Knox, Mark Cole of Knox and Luke Cole of
Hebron; siblings: James Borton, Terry Borton, Carl Borton and Dale Borton, all of North Liberty,
Keith Borton of Walkerton, Glen Borton, Merle Borton, both of South Bend, Lynn Borton of
Walkerton, Alma Free of South Bend and Zella Luallen of Galesburg, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and
two great-grandchildren.
Visitation is Sunday, Nov. 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. CT at the M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox.
Funeral services are Monday, Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. CT at the First Baptist Church of Knox.
Burial will be at Highland cemetery, North Judson.
Memorials may be made to Arthur & Ethel Horton VNA Hospice in Valparaiso or the Goshen
Cancer Center.
Helen Jeanette Hughes
WALKERTON — Helen Jeanette Hughes, 80, of Walkerton, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14
in Pilgrim Manor, Plymouth. Mrs. Hughes was born April 2, 1927 in Mt. Greenwood, Ill. to Henry
Dill and Mary Hester (Donnelly) Reed and lived in the area for 20 years, coming from Chicago.
On April 26, 1947 in Watseka, Ill. she was married
to James T. Hughes Sr., who preceded her in
death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include five children: Irene (David) Mikesell of South Bend, Janyce (Claude) Ogle of
Walkerton, James Jr. (Coleen) Hughes of South Bend, Mary (Ernest) Rollings of Plymouth and
Edward Sr. (JoAnn) Hughes of Walkerton; sister, Teresa (Ed) Holderness of Florida; 14
grandchildren: Lynn Mikesell of South Bend, Tracy (Jay) Burks of South Bend, Claude (Michelle)
Ogle of Bourbon, Natalie Ogle of Walkerton, Rhonda Ogle of Walkerton, Kimberly Hughes of
South Bend, Melissa Hughes of South Bend, Stephanie Hughes of South Bend, Jeanette
Rollings of Plymouth, Thomas Rollings of Plymouth, Marie-Celeste Berkman of Alaska, Michelle
Lilla of California, Edward Hughes Jr. of Walkerton and Angelica Hughes of Walkerton; 15 great-grandchildren:
Merle, Kaitlyn, Derek, David, Dustin, Allie, Erin, Robert, Brandon, Shawn,
Christina, Austin, Jessica, Emma and Colby.
She was a homemaker, a member of St. Dominics Church of Koontz Lake, a member of the
Ladies Guild of the church and advisor to Rural Youth Club of St. Joseph County.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel.
Friends may call Saturday from 3 p.m. ET until the time of services at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to the donor’s choice.
Vickey Mahler
CULVER — Vickey Mahler, 57, of Culver, died at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 at home.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Mahler; daughters: Toni Makikowski, Christine Farlow,
Heather Fairchild and Bridgette Blankenship; nine grandchildren; stepmother, Bonnie (Harold)
Bagley; sisters: Lori VanDerweele and Cindi Ross; and brother, Jeff McKinney.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. at Grace
United Church of Christ in Culver. Cremation wll take place.

William F. Niere
BREMEN — William F. Niere, 72, of Bremen, died at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South
Bend on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at 2:54 p.m.
Survivors include his Wife: Wanda of Bremen, one daughter: Willett (Larry) Hooten of New
Carlisle, one son: Martin (Irma) Niere of Bremen, three grandchildren: Kristina Niere of
Warrenville, Ill., Dillon Hooten of New Carlisle, Katelyn Hooten of New Carlisle, one sister: Joan
(John) Nickelson of South Bend.
Services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. at Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen.
Burial with full military rites will follow at Bremen cemetery.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Helen Alfreda Sherrill
Psalm 116:15: “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints”
Helen Alfreda Sherrill, 85, devoted Christian, loving wife, mom, sister, grandma, great-grandma
and great-great-grandma was chosen by God, her heavenly Father, to live with Him in Heaven
on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007.
Helen was born on July 13, 1922 in Nebraska to Earl and Laura (Johnson) Schmuck. She
married
Eugene A. Sherrill in 1942 in South Bend and lived there most of her life. As a woman of
prayer and a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Mishawaka, she served the Lord as a
High School Youth Sponsor, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Teacher, AWANA
Sparks Leader, and was active in Women’s Ministries and the Sew and Reap and Tabitha
Ladies Missionary Groups besides opening her home for a ladies Bible study.
Surviving family members left to cherish her memory are her children, Virginia (Bernard) Berg of
Wayland, Mich., Eugene (Karen) Sherrill of Mishawaka, Patricia Ann (Paul) Holderman of
Bremen, Richard (Kathi) Sherrill of Warren Mich., and Patricia Jean Emigh; 20 grandchildren; 25
great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Wilma (Wilbert) Swartz of Lincoln,
Neb.
God blessed us with the best mom, sister, grandma and fiend that anyone could ever have. She
took pride in taking care of her family, home, church, friends and anyone in need. We are
thankful to have had her as a wonderful example in our lives. Helen touched so many lives and
will be greatly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Eugene, Leland and Bud; a son,
Ronald Sherrill; a foster daughter, Betty and a grandson, Adam Sherrill.
Helen’s family would like to give special thanks to and express appreciation to all of the nurses
and caregivers who helped take care of her at the Miller’s Merry Manor in Plymouth.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the Bubb Funeral
Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, IN., The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 21 with one hour visitation prior at the First Baptist Church 724 N. Main St.
Mishawaka, IN, with Rev. David Miller and Rev. Richard McCartney officiating. Burial will is to
follow the service at Chapel Memorial Gardens, in Osceola, IN.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Mishawaka, IN.

Marvel M. Zimmerman
BREMEN — Marvel M. Zimmerman, 94, of Bremen died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007 at the Bremen
Health Care Center.
Marvel was born Oct. 27, 1923 in Beloit, Wis. To Earl and Mildred (McMahon) Lyons. She
moved to Bremen in 1977 from North Liberty.
On June 2, 1930, she married
Jay M. Mead. He preceded her in death in 1945. On April 8, 1967,
she married
Ralph Harbaugh. He preceded her in death in 1992. On Jan. 7, 1995, she married
Doyle “Red” Zimmerman. He survives.
She was a member of the Community Baptist Church in South Bend and was a cook at the
University of Notre Dame infirmary.
Survivors include her Husband: Doyle ‘Red’ Zimmerman of Lagrange, 1 Daughter: Janice
(DeWayne) Creighton of Bremen, 1 Son: Jay E. (Rose) Mead of Mishawaka, 2 Step-Daughters:

Harbaugh of North Liberty, Robert (Joanne) Zimmerman of Sturgis, MI, 15 Grandchildren:
Jaylynn Victory of Florence, AL, Becky (Paul) Morse of Granger, Robert (Denise) Mead of Niles,
MI, Sheri Paul of South Bend, George (Diana) Mead, Jr. of New Carlisle, David (Lisa) Mead of
Bridgeman, MI, Bobbie Jo (Duane) Keeton of Miles, MI, Cheryl (John) Norris of Koontz Lake,

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jay and husband Ralph, two sons:

Services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 10 a.m. at Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen.
Burial will follow at Southlawn cemetery, South Bend.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, and one hour prior to the service on
Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bremen Health Care Center.
Aaron Sigler Hardin
NORTH JUDSON — Aaron Sigler Hardin, 22, of North Judson, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007 at Starke
Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his fiancee, Kayla Campbell of North Judson; father, Ray Hardin of Monterey;
mother, Rose Martin of Bremen; son, Alexander Isaiah Hardin of North Judson; grandfather,
Avie Hardin of Toto, brother, Jesse Hardin of Bremen; half brothers: Joey Elder of Knox and
Cody Dunfee of Bremen; stepbrothers: Larry, Mike and Greg Sanderson of Monterey; half sister,
Nicole Hardin of Kokomo; and stepsister, Jeannie Sanderson of Knox.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel, Knox.
Burial will be at Highland cemetery, North Judson.
Isaiah A. Sellers
PLYMOUTH – Isaiah A. Sellers, 18, died Nov. 18, 2007 in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical
Center Plymouth Campus, at 12:02 pm.
He was born in Plymouth on Oct. 25, 1989, the son of John and Dawn McHargue Sellers.
He presently attended Plymouth High School as a senior, with the class of 2008.
Isaiah loved the Cubs and the Bulls. Being a Mark Martin fan, he enjoyed watching NASCAR. He
also enjoyed swimming and loved watching the fireworks at the Blueberry Festival.
He is survived by his parents, a brother Jeremiah Sellers and Kelly, three sisters: Alicia, Victoria,
and Kayla (Shawn) all of Plymouth, two nieces: Jaydn and Isabella, and a nephew Colton.
Grandparents Robert and Susie Sellers, and Margaurite McHargue, all of Plymouth survive as
well, along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Isaiah was preceded in death by his grandfather Arnold McHargue and an Uncle John.
Friends may visit with Isaiah’s family and share memories of him, at the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services for Isaiah will be on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, at 1 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home. Rev. John Perkinson and Rev. Jim Patrick will officiate.
Internment will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
