Robert L. Palmer
SOUTH BEND — Robert L. Palmer, 53, of 2222 East Washington St., South Bend, passed away
at 1:29 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007 at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend
Robert was born on March 10, 1954 in Plymouth, to Ormand and Margaret Catherine (Jones)
Palmer.
Robert was a resident of Plymouth before moving to Elkhart in 1973. While in Plymouth he
worked, with his father and grandfather, as an electrician’s helper. After moving to Elkhart he
worked for A.D.E.C. Industries. Upon retiring he moved to South Bend. Robert enjoyed country
music, sports, western novels and going out for coffee. He will be sadly missed by his many
friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Ormand Palmer and his grandparents, Edith and
Harley Palmer. He survived by his step-mother Bertha Palmer, of Elkhart.
Funeral services will be on Monday, Sept. 24, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL
HOME. Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth.
A time of visiting and sharing memories, of Robert, will be on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007 from 3 to 5
p.m. at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 West Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563.
Lee Dallas
NAPPANEE — Lee Dallas, 73, of Nappanee, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007 at home.
She is survived by daughters: Kathy Dallas of Nappanee, Jodi Wardlow of Milford and Kristi
Komon of Nappanee; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Margie
Dallas of Kendallville.
Burial took place Thursday at Olive West cemetery, Wakarusa. Visitation is Sunday, Sept. 23
from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, followed by a
memorial service at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Helen Marie Haines
PLYMOUTH — Helen Marie Haines, 80, 141 Elliott Ave., Plymouth, an area resident all of her
life, excepting for periods in Louisville, Ky., and South Bend, died of natural causes at 2:20 p.m.
in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007.
Born in Plymouth on Nov. 1, 1926, Helen was the daughter of Harry F. and Cecilia B. (Hartman)
Brundige.
She attended LaPaz Schools and graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1945.
On Aug. 17, 1946, in Plymouth, Helen and Thomas M. Haines were married
. Thomas died on
May 7, 1991.
For the better part of Helen’s working career, she enjoyed serving the community as a grocery
clerk. She worked at the Lake Avenue Food Market, Dave’s Supermarket and Glaubs’ G&G.
She also worked in the Norwesco plant for a brief period of time.
Helen loved flowers and enjoyed working out of doors, especially gardening which she learned
by running the greenhouse at the family’s Brundige A1 Gardens on the Plymouth-Goshen Road.
Helen is survived by a son, Thomas W. Haines and his fiance, Georgia Schneider. A sister-inlaw,
Darlene Brundige, a niece, Connie (Cecil) Ottow, all of Plymouth and a nephew, Harold
(Sarah) Davidson, Elkhart, and their families, survive as well.
She is preceded in death by her spouse; two sisters: Ilene Davidson and Juanita Ivins; and a
brother, Forrest V. Brundige.
Friends are invited to celebrate Helen’s life with her family on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, from 4 to 8
p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A Rosary will be
prayed at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Helen at 9:30 a.m. On Saturday, September 22,
2007, in St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 613 N. Center St., Plymouth, where Helen was a
member. The Rev. Father William Kummer will officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial gifts in Helen’s memory may be made to St. Michael’s Parish.
Alice B. Munroe
PLYMOUTH - Alice B. Munroe, 86, living at 15227 Yorkshire Drive, Plymouth, since May 2004,
having come from Belmont, Mass., died unexpectedly of natural causes in Saint Joseph
Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, at 8:50 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007.
Born in Cambridge, Mass., on March 26, 1921, she was the daughter of John P. and Margaret T.
(Riordan) Mulqueeny.
She graduated from St. John’s High School in Cambridge, Mass., with the class of 1939, and
then completed studies at Mt. Auburn School of Nursing, also in Cambridge.
Alice served as a Navy nurse in World War II. She tended to then Lt. John F. Kennedy who was
injured in the Solomon Islands on Aug. 2, 1943, when his PT-109 was sliced in half by a
Japanese destroyer.
After the War, on January 18, 1947, in Cambridge, Alice and Charles L. Munroe were married
in
St. John’s Roman Catholic Church. Charles died on April 13, 1980.
Alice applied her position as a Registered Nurse in various ways serving the community. She
retired in 1982.
Very artistic, she enjoyed oil painting nature scenes. She loved to read and work crossword
puzzles. Known to her family as a very “classy lady” she enjoyed dancing with her husband and
being a part of family gatherings.
Alice is survived by three daughters and three sons.
Her daughters are: Paula M. (Ronald) Babcock, Sr., Lenore Munroe, and Mary C. (Vernon)
Spoor all of Plymouth.
Her sons are Charles L. (Karen) Munroe, Sr., Concord, N.H.: John P. (Nancy) Munroe, Holden,
Mass., and James R. (Cheryl) Munroe, Mt. Gilead, Ohio.
Eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive together with a sister, Pauline R.
Mulqueeny of Plymouth and several nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her spouse, and two sisters, Margaret Mulqueeny and Lenore P.
Bowman.
Friends will be welcomed by her family to celebrate the life of Alice Munroe on Saturday, Sept.
22, 2007, from 2 to 3 p.m. at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 613 N. Center, Plymouth,
where she was a member.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow visitation at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the church. The Rev.
Father William Kummer will officiate.
Military honors will be accorded Alice following Mass outside the church.
Burial will be in St. John’s cemetery in Cambridge, Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Alice’s memory may be made to St. Michael’s Catholic
School – Playground Development Fund.
The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the family.
Crystal Grace Waechter
AKRON — Crystal Grace Waechter, 99, 111 E. Walnut St., Akron, died at 12:35 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007 at her residence.
Born in Miami County, the second of Elmer and Glee Butt Fites’ eight children, she attended
Frog Pond grade school and Gilead High School before graduating from Deedsville High School.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Manchester College in 1929 and later attended
Butler and Ball State universities.
She married
Walter D. Waechter on Nov. 30, 1933 at the Ebenezer Methodist Church. He
preceded her in death on June 25, 1981.
She retired in 1970 after a 34-year career as a teacher of Latin, English and mathematics at
Gilead, Shipshewana and Akron high schools but continued to tutor students at home for many
years after that. She delighted in attending class reunions, attending her last one in 2005 at the
age of 97.
A 74-year member of the Akron United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school
teacher, president of the board of trustees and secretary of the memorial fund, she also served
on the Akron Library Board and was a charter member of the Amicus Club. She belonged to the
Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma teacher’s sorority, the Akron
Women’s Club and the Jolliette and Martez clubs. She and her husband were life members of
the euchre club. As a member of the Fulton County Community Foundation, she established the
Walter D. Waechter and Grace C. Fites Waechter and Family Fund to support the Akron
cemetery Association and the Akron Carnegie Public Library.
She spent her retirement years in her home of 73 years enjoying bridge, euchre, crocheting,
afghan making, quilting and visiting friends and neighbors. Nothing made her happier than to
receive a letter from one of her former students.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Dean Rager of Plymouth; a
granddaughter, Christa McKinney Smith; three step-grandchildren: Pam McFarland, René
Rosen and Del Rager; five step-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Evelyn Schipper of Akron and
Mary Weirick of Mexico.
Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; three brothers: Ralph, Paul and Jim Fites;
two sisters: Ruth Bammerlin and Normaleen Wagner; son-in-law, 1st Lt. Neil B. McKinney, a
member of the U.S. Air Force who died in Vietnam; and a step-granddaughter, Judy Rager.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 at the Akron United Methodist Church
with Pastor Karen Ottjes officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the
service. Burial will be in the Akron cemetery.
Memorials to the Walter D. Waechter and Grace C. Waechter Family Fund can be made to the
Northern Indiana Community Foundation, 800 Main St., Rochester, IN or to the Akron United
Methodist Church.
The Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, is in charge of arrangements.
Joan Eva Nethercutt
PLYMOUTH — Joan Eva Nethercutt, 74, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007.
She is survived by her step-sons, Frank Nethercutt of LaPaz and Glen Nethercutt of Lakeville;
sister Shirley Carpenter of Morristown, Tenn.; and brothers, Phillip Richard and Steven Richard,
both of Plymouth.
Visitation is Monday, Sept. 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N.
Michigan St., Plymouth.
Services are Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be at New Oakhill cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Plymouth Wesleyan Church.
