Daniel W. Houin
PLYMOUTH — Daniel W. Houin, 12603 11B Rd., Plymouth, died at 8:37 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug.
28, 2007, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth. Dan died from injuries relating to
a farming accident earlier that evening.

He was 49-years-old, a self-employed, hard-working farmer and a devoted husband and father.

Born on April 7, 1958, Dan was the tenth of the twelve children of Elmer Vincent and Lena Mae
Baker Houin. He was baptized in St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in the same baptismal
gown of his siblings, handmade by his mother.

He graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1976 and was involved in the FFA
Program as an active member of the student body.

On Nov. 20, 1982, Dan and Tana J. Rodgers were married in St. Michaels at Plymouth.

Dan has been involved in farming his entire life. In his youth he was in 4-H and showed tractors,
small engines and electrical projects. Raised on the family farm which was passed on from his
grandparents, it has now become the core property of a Holstein milking operation in partnership
with his brother Floyd since 1979. Together they raise Holstein milking herds.

A rather quiet man at times, he had a great sense of humor and really connected with children
and young adults.

Dan enjoyed many sports and never missed an opportunity to watch and support his children in
their many endeavors. He himself played volleyball, basketball and “struggled” with golf. He was
a fan of Chicago’s professional teams.

He is a lifelong member of St. Michael Catholic Church and a local member of the Moose Lodge
No. 741.

Dan is survived by Tana, his wife of 25 years, and their two children, their son, Matthew D., a
student at Purdue University and Lindsay E., their daughter of Plymouth.

Susan L. Rodgers, his mother-in-law, of Plymouth, survives as well, together with his four
brothers and six sisters which includes numerous nieces and nephews.

His surviving brothers are: Floyd M. (Debra) Houin, Plymouth: Vern A. (Julie) Houin, Granger:
Roland E. (Kathy) Houin, Bremen, and Chris E. Houin, Burton, Ohio.

His sisters are: Donna M. (Kent) Mattix, Plymouth: Jeanette A. (Glendon) Becker, Argos: Virginia
R. (Gary) Mechling, Bloomington: Linda M. (Kenny) Nifong, Argos: Susanna E. (Richard)
Chesak, North Judson: and Marlene A. (Daniel) Taiclet, Plymouth.

Three sisters-in-law are; Frances A. Houin of Plymouth, Melinda K. (Tim) Lemler of Bourbon and
Cheryl L. (John) Caine of Pottsville, Penn. Survive with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and
friends.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, Melvin C. Rodgers and a brother,
David V. Houin.

Friends are invited to share memories and celebrate the life of Dan Houin from 3 to 8 p.m. on
Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St.,
Plymouth. A Rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m.

Visitation will continue after 7 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by the Rev. Father William Kummer, at St. Michael Catholic
Church, 615 N. Center St., Plymouth, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007.

The family request that memorial gifts in Dan’s memory be given to the church or the Plymouth
High School Athletic Department.

Edna P. McCan
PLYMOUTH — Edna P. McCan, 72 of 10780 Lincoln Highway, was a lifetime Plymouth resident.
Edna died in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, at 12:56 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug.
28, following a re-occurring and valiant battle against cancer.

Many remember her as the always loyal, cheerful receptionist and bookkeeper — for over 30
years — in the medical offices of Drs. James Robertson and James Kubley.

Edna was born in Plymouth, on Dec. 1, 1934, the daughter of Edgar D. and Edna G. Miller
Wright. She was a 1953 graduate of Plymouth High School.

On Feb. 13, 1954, in the Plymouth Church of the Brethren, Edna became the bride of Herman
G. “Jerry” McCan. Jerry died on March 19, 2005.

Edna enjoyed being with her family and watching her granddaughters play softball.

She was a member of the Plymouth Church of the Brethren and a former member of the Eagles
Auxiliary.

Edna is survived by three daughters: Debra Hillman and her friend Marty Easterday, Mindy (Eric)
Keilman, J.J. (Todd) Sullivan, all of Plymouth; and their children Erin Calhoun, Rachel Hillman,
Olivia, Emilee and, Zoe Keilman; Brianne, Marissa, and Sydney Sullivan all of Plymouth.

Three brothers and three sisters survive as well, William E. (Darlene) Wright, Plymouth: Eddie
D. (Eileen) Wright, Culver: and Larry W. (Phyllis) Wright, Plymouth, Patsy Jo (Hal) Groninger,
Plymouth: Jean Abair, Plymouth and Hilda Green, South Hampton, New Jersey.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerry, a brother, Roger Wright and a
sister, Audrey Rush.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Edna with her family from 5 to 7 p.m. on
Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Visitation will continue at 7 a.m. on Friday in the funeral home and for one hour prior to services
in the church.

Funeral services for Edna will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 31, 2007, in the Plymouth Church
of the Brethren, 1130 N. Michigan St. The Rev. Ruth Yoder, pastor of the church, will officiate.

Interment will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorial gifts in Edna’s name may be made to the Plymouth Church of the Brethren or the
Plymouth Fire Department.

Mildred V. Schipper
DILLSBORO — Mildred V. Schipper, 86, of Dillsboro, formerly of Aurora and Indianapolis, died
Wednesday, Aug. 29 in Dillsboro.

She is survived by a son, Mark (Cathy) Schipper of Fishers.

Visitation is Saturday, Sept. 1 from 9 to 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Aurora. Funeral
services will follow at 10 a.m.

Burial will be at Riverview cemetery, Aurora.

Memorials may be made to the Aurora Rescue Unit or St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Aurora.

Rullman Hunger Denney Funeral Home, Aurora, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jean E. Burden
ARGOS — Jean E. Burden, 12 B Road, Argos, died in Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, at 5:50
p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007. Jean was 84-years old.

She was born in Floyd, N.Y., the daughter of Nicholas and Cleora Brimson Soule, on Nov. 28,
1922. She graduated from the Oreskany, N.Y. High School.

On July 11, 1946, in Stittsville, N.Y., Jean and Dennis W. Burden were married . Jean retired
from Young Door Co. in 1984.

An avid bowler, she also enjoyed gardening.

She was a member of the Plymouth V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Jean is survived by Dennis, her husband of 61 years, Argos, and by their son and daughter-inlaw,
Wesley and Josephine Burden, Plymouth, and by their daughter, Linda Burden, Berkley, Calif.

Two granddaughters, Gwyn and Brittany Burden, both of Plymouth, also survive, together with a
brother, Bob Soule, Oriskany, N.Y., and a sister, Betty Koenig, Rome, N.Y..

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George Soule.

Friends are invited to celebrate the life of Jean Burden with her family from 5 to 7 p.m. On
Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.

Funeral services for Jean will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, in the funeral home. The
Rev. Dr. E. Dean Fager, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Plymouth, will officiate.

Burial will be in the New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorial gifts in Jean’s memory may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care of
Marshall County, a Parkinson’s Disease Support Group or the American Cancer SocietyMarshall
County Chapter.

Ruth M. Stuber
BREMEN — Ruth M. Stuber, 93, residing in Bremen, passed away at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.
1, 2007, at her home.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Eldon and Sharon Stuber of Bremen; two
granddaughters, Pamela (Larry) Martin of Bremen and Jana Lawmaster of Bremen; six great
grandchildren, Larry ‘Sonny’ Martin, Jr., Jodi Martin, Heather Martin, Evan Martin, Mitchell
Lawmaster and Alexandra Lawmaster; and one sister, Lois Gushwa of Bremen.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the Lakeville United
Methodist Church. Rev. Larry Dimick will officiate. Burial will follow at Bremen cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.

Palmer Funeral Home, Lakeville, is assisting with funeral arrangements.

Contributions in memory of Ruth M. Stuber may be donated to The Center for Hospice and
Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.

Wendell D. Lewark

CULVER — Wendell D. Lewark, 81, of Culver, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2007 at 5:44 p.m. at home.

He is survived by a sister, Mildred (Les) McQueen of Ft. Wayne and a brother, Paul Lewark of
Ft. Wayne.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be private.

The Bonine-Odom Funeral Home, Culver, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jennie Castaneda
PLYMOUTH — Jennie Castaneda, 87, died at 3:35 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 at Miller’s Merry
Manor, Plymouth.

She is survived by sons: Richard (Ruth) Castaneda of San Jose, Calif. And Robert (Marcy)
Castaneda of Hayward, Calif.; daughters: Joann (Gene) Duenas of San Jose, Calif. And
Jeanette (Mark) Polk of Plymouth; sister, Sister Adelaide Correa of Kearney, Neb.; nine
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.

Visitation is Friday, Sept. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oak Hill Funeral Home, San Jose, Calif., with
a rosary service at 6 p.m.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 8 at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose, Calif.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Support Group.

Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Plymouth, is in charge of local arrangements.
