Richard S. Young
VALPARAISO — Richard S. Young, 61, of Valparaiso, formerly of Plymouth, died July 27, 2008.
He was born Jan. 7, 1947 in Santa Fe, N.M.. He graduated with honors from Plymouth High
School in 1965 and attended Wabash College. Richard served in the United States Army during
the Vietnam conflict from 1968-1970 where he received an Army Commendation Medal for
meritorious service. Richard was a kind and gentle man who had a great appreciation for the arts.
Richard is survived by his mother, Mary A. Young of Valparaiso; two sisters: Barbara A. Young
of Valparaiso and Kathy J. (Jim) Harvuot of Warsaw; and a niece, Ann Michelle Harvuot of
Warsaw. He was preceded in death by his father, William S. Young.
There will be a memorial service riday, Aug. 1, 2008 at 3: 30 p.m. Central Daylight Savings Time
(4: 30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Savings Time – Plymouth time) at Moeller Funeral Home, 104
Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso. Visitation will be Friday, Aug.1, 2008 from 1 p.m. (2 p.m. Plymouth
time) until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials gifts may be made to the Porter County Community Foundation for
the benefit of the American Red Cross Endowment Fund. During his life, Richard was grateful to
the American Red Cross for the assistance they provided to servicemen overseas.
Charles Wayne Bates
WALKERTON — Charles Wayne Bates, 51, residing in Walkerton, IN, passed away in the
emergency room of Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, at 2: 05 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2008.
He was born Feb. 8, 1957 in Plymouth, the son of Wayne Devere & Jessie (Woods) Bates, and
has lived in this area all of his life. He was a 1975 graduate of John Glenn High School.
On Nov. 12, 1982 in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Walkerton, he was united in marriage to
Diane R. Stachowski, who survives. Also surviving are his two daughters: Heather Bates of
Walkerton, and Stacey (Heath) Burgess of Lafayette; five sisters: Darcia (David) Sherwood of
Walkerton, Sandra (Harold) Hindeman of Muncie, Helen (Ken) Kelly of Mountain Ranch, Calif.,
Judy (Ron) Ellison of Knox, and June (Don) Warren of Plymouth, survive him as well. He is also
survived by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Thelma Stachowski of North Liberty.
Charles was employed with Precision Wall as a glazer. He was a wonderful husband, dad, and
brother, always caring for his family. He enjoyed fishing, and loved the Chicago Cubs.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at Palmer Funeral Home-Lakeville, 314 S. Michigan
St., Lakeville. Rev. Rob Keck will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Morris
cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to an education fund for Heather Bates at any 1st Source Banking Center.
Audrey Lucille Solmos
WALKERTON — Audrey Lucille Solmos, 91, of Walkerton, died Monday, July 28 at her son’s home.
She is survived by sons: Larry (Shirley) McDaniel of Lincoln, Neb., David (Dorothy) Solmos of
Indianapolis and Patrick (Sharon) Solmos of South Bend; sister, Pauline (“B.”) Carnes of
Rockingham, N.C.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation is Thursday, July 31 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. EST at the Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral
Home, Walkerton. A rosary service will take place at the funeral home at 7: 30 p.m. A funeral
mass is Friday, Aug. 1 at 11: 30 a.m. EST at St. Patrick’s Church in Walkerton. Burial will follow
at Eastlawn cemetery in North Liberty.
John Norman Zechiel
FAIRFAX, Va. — John Norman Zechiel, 81, of Fairfax, Va., passed away July 30, 2008 in
Virginia. John was the son of Allen Norris and Marietta (Clearwater) Zechiel and the grandson of
Anna Lenore Norris Zechiel Larkin of Culver.
John is survived by his loving family including his wife, Gina Zechiel; sons: John, Howard and
Andrew Zechiel; four grandchildren; and his brother, Leon Zechiel of Mauldin, S.C.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Culver Masonic cemetery.

Donald L. Carter
CULVER — Donald L. Carter, 78, formerly of Culver, passed away at 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, July
31, at his home in Fairhope, Ala.
He was a retired draftsman for Monsant Fibers, Pensacola, Fla. He was a Veteran of the United
States Air Force.
He was born Feb. 9, 1030 in Hammond to Ernest and Goldie (Good) Carter and was married
Dec. 5, 1952 in Pensacola to Agnes Nolen. She survives.
Also surviving are one son: Dr. Randy (Heidi) Carter of Sandy, Utah; grandchildren: Austin and
Lauren Carter of Salt Lake City, Utah, LCpl. Brandon Carter of Camp Pendleton, Calif.; brother:
Shirley (Margie) Carter of Plymouth; brother-in-law: Frank Nolen of Pensacola, Fla.; sisters:
Phyllis Adams of Argos; sisters-in-law: Janice Carter of Plymouth, Sharon Carter of Rochester
and Jessie Perry of Abbeville, Ala.
One brother preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Scenic Heights Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be held at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at the Culver Masonic cemetery.
Rev. Karry Saunders will officiate.
Friends may call at the Bonine-Odom Funeral Home from 10 to 11: 30 a.m. Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of Covenant Hospice in Daphne, Ala.

Leonard Lee Fish
PLYMOUTH — Leonard Lee Fish, 67, of 15991 6th Road, Plymouth, , passed away Thursday,
July 31, 2008, at 2 a.m., at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, in Chicago.
Leonard was born March 31, 1941, in Argos, to Lloyd and Florence (Vance) Fish. On Jan. 20,
1962, Leonard Fish and Judy Reese were married
.
He served his country in the Army National Guard, in Indiana. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing,
hunting, and working in his garden. He loved to be with his family and loved his grandchildren.
Leonard retired in 2003 from Bomarko, in Plymouth, where he was a pressman.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Fish; their children, Melody (Orville) Pitts of Plymouth, Dorraine
(Dale) Freck, Sr., of Plymouth, Lisa (Keenan) Burch of LaPaz, Leonard (Stephanie) Fish of
Bremen, and Kevin (Rachel) Fish of Crosby, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;
his sister, Mary Sobierski of Glendale, Ariz.; his brothers, Donald Fish of Plymouth and Donald
Pearish of Bremen. He was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Fear.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at 10: 30 a.m., at the Van Gilder Funeral
Home, in Plymouth, with the Rev. Norman Reimer officiating.
Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery, Argos.
A time of visiting with the family will be on Monday, August 4, 2008, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Van
Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563.
Thomas E. Kline
CULVER — Thomas E. Kline, 58, of Culver, died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Starke Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth Kline of Culver; daughters: Diane (Kevin) Longacre of
Elkhart and Susanna (Randy) Smith of South Bend; sons: Thomas (Tausha) Kline Jr. of Argos
and Roy M. Kline of Wyoming; sister, Peggy Kline of Plymouth; and brother, James Kline of South Bend.
Arrangements are pending with the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Plymouth.
Geraldine J. Fernald
SOUTH BEND — Geraldine J. Fernald, 84, passed away Aug. 2, 2008 at her home.
She was born Dec. 18, 1923 in St. Paul, Minn.
She lived in Plymouth from 1966 until 2000 when she moved to South Bend.
Mrs. Fernald is survived by her daughter, Judy Lamon of South Bend; one son, Richard
(Jacquelyn) Fernald of Roanoke, VA; two grandchildren, Jon (Teresa) Lamon and Julie Howe;
and five great grandchildren, Joshua, Bradley, Devin, Briana, and Dayton.
Private graveside services will be held on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008 at Oak Hill cemetery,
Plymouth.
There will be no visitation.

Edward Ray Mast
PLYMOUTH – Edward Ray Mast, 71, 905 S. Michigan St., Plymouth, died at noon on Saturday,
Aug. 2, 2008, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth.
Born in Goshen on March 31, 1937, Ed was the son of Ora and Edna Slabaugh Mast.
He received an Amish education until the 10th grade.
A truck driver, he worked for Banks Lumber for 20 years and for Hehr International for 23 years.
He retired in 2004.
Edward is survived by Donna Howell, his very special lady friend, Plymouth, and by a daughter,
Carmen Guericke of Milford and a son, Brent (Becky) Mast of Plymouth.
Six grandchildren also survive: Amanda Guericke, Diana, Harlie and Laci Mast and Kayla and
Jeff Howell.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Mast.
Friends are invited to visit with Edward’s family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at the
Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Family services for Edward will be held.
Burial will be in Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorial contributions in Edward’s memory may be made to the Center for Hospice and
Palliative Care.
Dale P. Wood
TIPPECANOE — Dale P. Wood, 67 of 2606 20th Road of rural Tippecanoe, peacefully entered
into rest, Saturday, Aug. 2 at 7: 30 a.m. in Goshen General Hospital. He had been in failing health.
He was born the son of Ernest Wood and Myrtle Proudy Wood on Dec. 29, 1940 at Mishawaka.
He and his wife were owners of Suspension Spring Specialist of Bremen since 1986. He was an
avid fan of automobile racing. He had been a resident of Tippecanoe since 1963.
Dale was joined in marriage to Jewel Whetstone on Feb. 17, 1963, she survives along with his
two daughters and a son: Christine Hanson of Bourbon, Mardel and husband Brandon Taylor of
Tippecanoe and Larry and wife Jeanette Wood of Warsaw. He was further blessed 10
grandchildren; Montana, Megan and Dale Wood, Amberly, Courtney, Brandi and Joshua Taylor,
Dakota and Victoria Grubbs and Bryant Hanson. Dale also has a sister, Luretta Jamesen and a
brother, Ernest and Sandy Wood all of Elkhart.
A funeral service to celebrate Dale’s life will be on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 3 p.m. in the Deaton-Clemens
Funeral Home with Pastor John Contreras officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of services in the funeral home.
Burial will follow in the Tippecanoe cemetery at Tippecanoe.
The family requests any memorial contributions be made to: Tippecanoe Fire Department or
Tippecanoe Emergency Medical Services in his memory.
Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Susan M. Feece
WALKERTON — Susan M. Feece, 79, of Valley View Health Care Center, Elkhart, formerly of
Walkerton died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008 in the nursing home.
Survivors include three sons: Jerry of Arizona, Wayne of Walkerton and Dale of Nappanee; one
sister, Grace Bollinger of Elkhart; one brother, George Steele of Ft. Wayne; seven grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 9 at 12 p.m. Eastern Time at Rannells Funeral Home,
Koontz Lake Chapel. Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery, Walkerton. Visitation is Saturday,
Aug. 9 at 10 a.m. EDT until the time of services.

Hulda M. Ross
WALKERTON — Huldah M. Ross, 82, of Millers Merry Manor, Walkerton, died Sunday, Aug. 3,
in the nursing home.
Survivors include: one son, Michael (Sandy) Ross Sr. of Walkerton; four sisters, Henrietta (Joe)
Hove of Fosston, Minn., Annabelle (George) Osborn of Inman, Kan., Maxine (Red) Hochstetler
of Bremen, Emily (Phil) Kollar of South Bend; three brothers, Bernie (Jeri) Williams of South
Bend, George Williams of LaPorte and Roy (Nedra) Williams of Walkerton; four grandchildren,
14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. Eastern Time at Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake
Chapel.
Burial will be at the Woodlawn cemetery, Walkerton.
Friends may call Friday from 12 p.m. EDT until the time of services at the funeral home.
Anita N. Chambers
SMITHVILLE, Tenn. — Anita N. Chambers, 24, of Smithville, Tenn., formerly of Knox, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008.
She is survived by her parents: Rusty Chambers of Streator, Ill. and Regina (Banks) Chambers
of Smithville, Tenn.; her children: Hanna Michelle, Travis Matthew and Gracie Marie, all at home;
a brother, Scott Tharpe of Plymouth; and a sister, Genelle Tharpe of Plymouth.
Visitation is Friday, Aug. 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the M.C. Smith Funeral Home, Knox. Funeral
services are Saturday, Aug. 9 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Park cemetery.
