Edna A. Tramel

NEW CASTLE -- Edna A. (Curtis) Tramel, 87, died Aug. 17, 2003, in the home of her son after a brief illness.
Born in Scott County, she was the daughter of Philip L. and Lela M. (Betts) Curtis.
She was an active member of the South Memorial Drive Church of God in New Castle, where she served as youth leader, Sunday School teacher, a volunteer for the Heart to Hand Food Pantry and was in the Joy Sunday School class, Karing Keenagers and Women of the Church of God.
Survivors include three children, Jeannie (husband, Steve) Smith of Anderson, Duane (wife, Lerue) Tramel of New Castle and Carol Hall of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren, Regan Tramel and Brady Tramel, both of New Castle, Derek Smith and Heidi Smith, both of Anderson, and Tyler Hall and Lauren Hall, both of San Antonio, Texas; sister, Dorothy F. (husband, Edward B.) Allis of Arlington, Va.; stepbrother, Larry (wife, Becky) Muse of Spiceland; stepsister, Helen; brother-in-law, Michael Pazich of Santa Monica, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Virginia Curtis of Nashville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle D. Tramel, in 1988; two brothers, Kenneth M. Curtis and Robert E. Curtis; and a lifelong friend, Regina Ryan.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at South Memorial Drive Church of God, 3800 Memorial Drive, officiated by the Rev. Mark Martin. Entombment will follow at East Hill Mausoleum in Rushville.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, 3406 S. Memorial Drive, and one hour prior to the Wednesday service at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Henry County Memorial Hospital Hospice or to South Memorial Drive Church of God Heart to Hand Food Pantry. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Sheri E. Whitmer
SHOALS -- Sheri E. Whitmer, 37, former Pendleton resident, died Aug. 16, 2003. Arrangements are pending at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home, Anderson.
Isaac C. Betts
Isaac Cloud Betts, 91, Anderson, died April 4, 2002, at St. John's Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 5, 1911, in Vernon, Ill., and was a self-employed farmer. He was a member of Frostproof United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Keith (wife, Rosemary) Betts of Anderson and Joe (wife, Sandra) Betts of Carrollton, Texas; grandchildren, Greg (wife, Jerri) Betts, Teresa Betts, Chris Betts and Mike (wife, Kristina) Betts, all of Anderson, and Kristie (husband, Bob) Schlosser of Carrollton, Texas; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen M. Betts; and grandson, Jeff Betts.
A family memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
There will be no visitation.
Arrangements are being handled by Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice.
Edna P. Vail
McCORDSVILLE -- Edna P. (Bergner) Vail, 100, McCordsville, died April 4, 2002, at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield.
She was a cook for many years at the former McCordsville School.
Survivors include two sons, Howard (wife, Marylen) Vail and Larry (wife, Shelley Jean) Vail; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Robert A. Vail, died in 1961.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ronald L. Seals Funeral Home, Fortville, with the Rev. Scott Cassel officiating. Burial will be in Gravel Lawn Cemetery, Fortville.
Visitation will be 3 to 8 Monday at the funeral home. Order of Eastern Star memorial services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday.
Memorial contributions may be made to McCordsville United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Wilma McCune
ALEXANDRIA -- Wilma McCune, 73, Alexandria, died April 4, 2002, at Community Hospital East in Indianapolis after a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 8, 1928, in Alexandria, the daughter of Henry and Emma Lucille (Hinshaw) Hague. She was a homemaker. Her family and her church were very important to her.
She was a 1945 graduate of Alexandria High School. From 1956 to 1981 she was a faithful pastor's wife and she continued to serve her church as the wife of the superintendent of the Central Yearly Meeting of Friends from 1980 to 1994. She was always an active Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed reading and was fond of embroidering.
She was a member of Gateway Friends Church in Kokomo. She attended the Ironwood Bible Methodist Church in Frankton.
Survivors include four daughters, Sharon (husband, Terry) Haight of Pittsfield, Pa., Diana (husband, Wayne) Covert of Winchester, Becky (husband, Steve) Pyle of Jonesboro and Pam McCune of Lancaster, Pa.; two sons, Larry McCune of Summitville and Jim (wife, Vicki) McCune of Marion; daughter-in-law, Brenda McCune of Jonesboro; sister, Ruth Ehrhart of Anderson; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in her parents; husband, the Rev. Ollie McCune, died in 1995; son, Stephen McCune, died in 1997; a sister, Mary Lou Six; and four brothers, Elbert Hague, Lester Hague, William Hague and Harold Hague.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Noffze Funeral Home, 501 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with the Revs. Jonathan Edward, Duane Quesenberry and Chris Blankenship officiating. Burial will be in Vinson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Yearly Meeting of Friends through the funeral home.
Thurman Covington Jr.
OKEECHOBEE, Fla. -- Former Anderson resident Thurman Covington Jr., 77, Okeechobee, died March 24, 2002, at Raulerson Hospital in Okeechobee.
He was retired from General Motors in Anderson.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean Covington; two daughters, Diana Hensley of Anderson and Marilyn Kay Young of Noblesville; and several grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the National Cremation Society of West Palm Beach, Fla.
Hanna Dates Jr.
Hanna Dates Jr., 61, Anderson, died April 3, 2002, at Community Hospital.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Harris and Pastor Lamont Wise co-officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at L.C. May Funeral Services.

Deva E. Martin
MIDDLETOWN -- Deva E. (Moorman) Martin, 89, Middletown, died April 4, 2002, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born July 2, 1912, in Phlox, and lived in the Elwood-Anderson area most of her life. She retired from Guide Lamp Division of General Motors after 18 years of employment.
She was a past member of the Anderson Order of Eastern Star and the United Auto Workers Local 663.
Survivors include a son, Darrell A. Martin of Middletown; a sister, Mable Kleyla of Anderson; two grandchildren, Natalie Graves and special friend Jim White of Warren, Minn., and Rhonda Kridler of Middletown; five great-grandchildren, Amanda Graves, Nicole Graves and Ryan White, all of Warren, Minn., and Samantha Kridler and Dakota Kridler, both of Middletown; five nephews, Monty Kleyla, Robert Kleyla, Jimmy Kleyla, Gene Moorman and Larry Moorman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Cora (Overman) Moorman; brothers, Melvin Moorman and Ivan Moorman; and sister, Flossie Lynas.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel, with the Rev. Mike Thacker officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the South Chapel.
Paul F. Wilke
Paul F. Wilke, 91, Crown Point Senior Living Community, died April 4, 2002, at Community Hospital.
He was born May 8, 1910, in St. Charles, Mo., and lived in Anderson for the past 20 years. He was a retired certified public accountant. He had worked for John Deere, Inter-Costal Paint Co. and did public accounting.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Anderson. He was a member of the Paul Revere Masonic Lodge AF&AM in St. Louis, Mo. He was an avid Missouri Tiger athletic fan and enjoyed watching the games. He was a 1933 graduate of the University of Missouri.
Survivors include a daughter, Andrea (husband, Ron) Koepke of Anderson; a granddaughter, Laura Koepke of Chicago, Ill.; a grandson, Todd Koepke of Bloomington; three nieces; and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Anna (Strathmann) Wilke; wife, whom he married Aug. 5, 1939, in Columbia, Ill., Dorothy (Schmidt) Wilke, who died on March 26, 1999; a brother, Gustav Wilke; and a sister, Martha Poser.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Lawler Funeral Home, 218 S. Metter Ave., Columbia, Ill., with Pastor Rob Page officiating. Burial will be in Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery, Columbia, Ill.
Visitation will be noon to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Local arrangements are being handled by Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, South Chapel.

W. Paul Torrington
EVANSVILLE -- W. Paul Torrington, 94, Evansville, executive vice president and vice chairman of the board of directors at Mead Johnson & Co. when he retired in 1972, died April 3, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center.
At one time or another, Torrington managed virtually every part of Mead Johnson & Co.'s operations over his 30-year association. He joined the company in 1942 as assistant to president D. Mead Johnson, and shortly thereafter established the company's engineering department. He then began a long-term modernization program for buildings, utilities and manufacturing.
In 1949 he was elected vice president in charge of manufacturing and engineering, a position he held until 1959. He was elected to the company's board of directors in 1957. In 1959 he was elected its executive vice president and had responsibility for research and later manufacturing. He assumed the management of all domestic and Canadian operations in 1965 when Harold O. McCutchan became Mead Johnson board chairman. He was elected vice chairman of the Mead Johnson board of directors in 1968.
Active in civic affairs he served as a director and vice president of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Building Authority, which managed the Civic Center from 1961-1970. He was a board member of the Indiana Manufacturers Associations from 1958-1964 and from 1961-1966 served as a member of St. Mary's Hospital Advisory Board.
He was born Feb. 29, 1908, in New York City, was educated in St. Louis, Chicago and Pennsylvania before returning to New York. He joined the Intercontinent Gas Corp., which specialized in the design, construction and erection of experimental pilot plants to prove commercial feasibility. He was involved in projects in London in 1935-1936. He then joined Emulsions Process Corp. in 1937 as its chief engineer, and in the course of the engineering operation, filed and received a number of patents, which included a process for the extraction of the cytoplasm from byproduct brewers yeast, thereby recovering in an unaltered form the Vitamin B complex and proteolytic enzymes. He then designed pilot plants for Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis and Mead Johnson & Company in Evansville.
He was a member of the Evansville Country Club and the Kennel Club of Evansville. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed travel throughout his life, and more recently spent considerable time on the boat he kept on Kentucky Lake.
A generous donor who focused on helping provide state-of-the-art equipment for the Torrington Development Biology Research Laboratory and the Torrington Chemistry Research Laboratory, he continued to underwrite substantial purchases for both laboratories, which he initiated during USI's capital campaign in 1998. He then established the W. Paul and Mildred Torrington Endowment through a charitable remainder trust to perpetually underwrite ongoing equipment purchases for the Biology and Chemistry Departments at the University of Southern Indiana.
In addition, he established the W. Paul and Mildred B. Torrington Endowed Presidential Scholarship in 1998 to benefit students who major in medical and scientific fields. The Torrington Trust also establishes the Rosemarie T. and John J. Albers Scholarships for students in the Pott School of Science and Engineering Technology.
A grateful University bestowed on Torrington an honorary doctor of science degree in 1998. It was announced at the groundbreaking last fall that the science wing of the Science and Education Center, currently under construction, will be named the W. Paul Torrington Science Wing to recognize him as a science pioneer whose vision and resources will continue to inspire the School's students and faculty.
Survivors include a daughter, Rosemarie T. Albers of Anderson; son-in-law, John J. Albers Jr. of Anderson; granddaughter, Joan M. Hughes of Evansville; grandson, Gregory P. (wife, Patricia B.) Albers of Mankato, Minn.; granddaughter, Susan A. (husband, Richard J.) Wathen of Indianapolis; great-grandchildren, Samantha Torrington Wathen, Emily Rose Albers, Christopher Robert Wathen and Hannah Louise Albers.
Also surviving is special friend, Alice Karger of Evansville.
His wife of 63 years, Mildred (Barth) Torrington, died in 1995.
Services will be 11 a.m. today at the Alexander East Chapel, with the Rev. Stephen P. Lintzenich and Dr. Ray Hoops officiating. Entombment will be in Alexander Memorial Park Mausoleum.
