Madelyn Pearl Hart Smith
QUINCY, Ind. — Madelyn Pearl Hart Smith, passed away peacefully in Plymouth, Dec. 2, 2009.
After having been raised in Quincy, with her seven brothers and sisters, Madelyn lived most of
her adult life on the west side of Indianapolis.
She was a long-standing member of Fleming Garden Christian Church, where she participated
in the Ladies Council, Ladies Auxiliary, and served on several other committees and programs.
She was involved in local politics for several years on the precinct level, and filled various
positions on election days. Madelyn was a member of Eastern Star, worked on the Rhodes PTO,
and was retired from Rhodes Elementary School of Wayne Township where she was the
World’s Best Cafeteria Lady!
She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Dallas Orville Smith; sisters: Lucille
Kegley, Ruth Carpenter, Kathleen Day, Omadean Cummings; brothers: Wayne Hart and Venice
Hart; and grandsons Travis Sheeler and Infant Boy Jones. She is survived by daughters:
Wynona Smith Jones of Plymouth, Dixie Smith Moye’ (Lemuel) of Houston, Texas, and Lois
Smith Sheeler of Dallas, Texas; grandson Derek Jones; granddaughters: Shelby Jones and
Kylie Sheeler; and great-grandchildren: Lena, Ellie, and Davis Jones; and sister Eva Smith; as
well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Madelyn’s life will be held Sunday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. at
Plymouth Wesleyan Church in Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the donor’s choice.
Anna Rose Heim
WALKERTON — Anna Rose Heim, 84, passed away Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 in Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton.
rs. Heim was born May 11, 1925 in Walkerton, to John and Minnie Clark and lived in the area all of her life.
On Feb. 10, 1950, in Argos, she was married
to William Heim Jr., who preceded her in death in 2002.
Survivors include two sons, Barry Heim of Walkerton and Noel Heim of South Bend and two grandsons.
She was a second grade teacher at Walkerton Elementary School for many years and was a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church.
There will be no services or visitation.
Cremation will take place.

Ernest E. Shaffer
PLYMOUTH — Ernest Eugene Shaffer, 98, of Windmill Drive, Plymouth, died of natural causes in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth Campus, at 12:55 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009
Ernest was born in Walnut Twp., Marshall County, Dec. 2, 1911. He was the son of Joseph Richard and Minnie Belle Casey Shaffer. In 1923, he completed the ninth grade at Argos High School.
A lifetime resident, Ernest was married
to Alice Thompson Stull April 3, 1983 in the Plymouth Wesleyan Church.
In WWII, Ernest served his country in the United States Army, enlisting in 1945 and honorably discharged in 1949.
He worked as an inspector for McCord’s for 30 years, retiring in 1976.
Ernest enjoyed fishing and taking care of a large and productive garden. Ernest also enjoyed doing word search puzzles. He was a member of the Plymouth Wesleyan Church and the Farm Bureau.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Alice, two step-daughters and two step-sons. His step-daughters are Linda (David) McCarthy, Michigan City, and Barbara (Robert) Milligan, Lake Park, Fla. His
step-sons are Larry (Mary Lee) Stull South Bend, and Roger Stull, Plymouth.
He is survived by nine step-grandchildren: Sherie Netzel, Chris Pischke, Melissa Jackson, Denny Stull, Doug Stull, Darrin Stull, Joe Reitzug, Nick Reitzug, and Mary Beth TeSelle.
Ernest is also survived by 13 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Clarence Shaffer.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Ernest with his family Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, from 3 to 6 p.m.
Funeral Services for Ernest will be held in the Plymouth Wesleyan Church, 11203 S. Michigan Rd., officiated by the Rev. John Branch, at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, with calling one hour prior to
services.
Burial with full military rites, conducted by the Plymouth American Legion Post #27 and Plymouth VFW Post 1162 will be in New Oakhill cemetery.

Betty L. Burns
WARSAW — Betty L. Burns, 79, of Warsaw, formerly of Plymouth, passed away at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 at Mason Health Care, Warsaw.
She was born Oct. 8, 1930 in Winchester, Ind. to Marvin and Gladys (Hoagston) Coddington.
She married
Walter Burns, Jan. 24, 1953 in Indianapolis and was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband Walter; a daughter, Sharon (Brett) Walters of Bourbon; a son, Steven (Charlene) Burns of Granger; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be held with Pastor Dennis Bollenbacher, Chaplain, Mason Health
Care, Warsaw officiating with burial to follow at Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Maxine E. Grover
PLYMOUTH — Maxine E. Grover, 82, of Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, died of natural causes in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, at 3:32 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2009.
A resident of Marshall County most of her life, Maxine was born Dec. 30, 1926 in Elkhart, the daughter of William and Josephine Margaret Bollencher McCalmont.
On Jan. 22, 1946, Maxine and Lester Grover were married
in the parsonage of Rev. Walter and Gladys Mangun in Plymouth. Lester died Nov. 23, 2005.
Maxine worked at Morris’ Five and Dime store and at Wards during the 1950’s. She said she “didn’t retire, I just quit.”
She was a member of the VFW in Plymouth and a former member of the Bible Baptist Church.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles and delighted in finding the words in word puzzles.
Maxine was close to a number of family members. She is survived by two nieces: Donna (Dwight) Hite of Culver and Barb (Bruce) Pearson of Argos; two nephews: Jim (Judy) Grover of Culver and Jerry (Joyce) Grover of Greenfield; five great-nieces: Kristin (Tony) Lidgard, April (Adam) Tener, Nicole Hite and Kathy Grover; and Debby (Jerry) Carlson: three great-nephews: Mike (Bobbie Jo) Grover, Travis Hite and Cody Hite; and a sister-in-law, Dolores M. Grover of Argos.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and a half-sister, Helen Holderman.
Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for Maxine will follow visitation at 5 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. George L. Swank will officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery.
Memorials in Maxine’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Larry W. Hardison
FORT WAYNE - Larry W. Hardison, 65, of Ft. Wayne, formerly of Knox, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 in Coventry Meadows, Ft. Wayne.
He is survived by his wife Brenda; his mother, Edna Hardison of Indianapolis; daughters: Kathy (Rick) Rice and Sandra Knorr, both of Indianapolis and Cassy Hardison of Knox; two sons, Berlie (Ashley) Hardison of Winamac and Shane Hardison of Michigan; one step-son, Brian Armstrong of Illinois; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 11 a.m. (CST) at Community Gospel Baptist Church, Knox until the time of services.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the church.
Burial will be at the Crown Hill cemetery, Knox.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Kidney Foundation or ABATE.

Chester R. Kaminski
HAMLET - Chester R. Kaminski, 87, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 in his home.
He is survived by his wife Katherine (DeLache); a daughter, Deborah (Jack) Rush of Port Aransas, Texas; a son, David (Janice) Kaminski of Hamlet; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
There will be no visitation.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. (Central Time) at Holy Cross Church of Hamlet.
Burial will be at the Holy Cross cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted.

Jimmy W. Linville
NAPPANEE — Jimmy W. Linville, 60, of Nappanee, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009.
He is survived by a daughter, Tammy (Monty) Blanton of Nappanee; two grandsons; sisters: Cathy (James) Flickinger of Mishawaka, Pat Loomey of Cuba, Mo., Karen (Howard) Sellers of Syracuse and Deb (Leon) Sterling of Nappanee.
Visitation will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder

Funeral services will take place Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kenneth D. Rader
BREMEN — Kenneth D. Rader, 89, a lifetime Bremen resident, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 at Bremen Healthcare of Bremen.
He was born Sept. 18, 1920 in Bremen to Leroy and Florence (Dumph) Rader.
He married
Mary Ellen Shafer Oct. 2, 1941; she survives.
He graduated from Bremen High School in 1939. Before working as a farmer full time he had worked for Sunset Hill Farm of Valparaiso and Liberty Coach of Bremen. He had also worked for several years as a substitute bus driver for Bremen schools.
Kenneth was a member of Bremen United Methodist for more than 70 years where he had served as a trustee, the president and treasurer of the win a couple class. He was also a longtime member of the Indiana Farm Bureau, president of the German Township Farm Bureau, and director of the Fulton-Marshall Co-op for several years.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen; children: Sue (George) Schmitt of Phoenix, Ariz., Sally (Larry) Preece of Sykesville, Md., Rosalie Rader of Bremen, and Don (Phyllis) of Aurora, Colo.; a brother, Richard (Thelma) Rader of Bremen; a sister, Louise (Maynard) Hochstetler of Bremen; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Sharp.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home with Pastor Kevin Miller officiating.
Memorials may be made to Hospice or the Bremen United Methodist Church.
The Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen is assisting the family with arrangements.

INDIANAPOLIS — Marc Alan Saxton, 60, Indianapolis, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Fri. Dec. 11 at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel, Indianapolis.
Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Ann Marie Tuttle
ARGOS — Ann Marie Tuttle, 71, of Argos, died at 3:25 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, following a three-month illness.
She was born March 10, 1938 in Argos to Frank Harrell Sr. and Harriett Brockus. She lived all of her life in the Argos community.
Ann married
Richard L. Tuttle Oct. 24, 1959 in Plymouth at St. Michael Catholic Church. She was a housewife and homemaker and a member of the St. Michael Catholic Church of Plymouth.
She is survived by her husband Richard; daughters: Rose Krull of Rochester and Dede (Jeff) Crum of Culver; sons: Richard L. Tuttle Jr. of Crown Point and David W. (Debra) Tuttle of Rochester; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Frank (Connie) Harrell Jr. of Argos.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Barry L. Tuttle (August 5, 1973).
Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8 at the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home with Rev. Father William Kummer of St. Michael Catholic Church, Plymouth officiating.

Julia Mae (Brown) Adley
ROCHESTER — Julia Mae (Brown) Adley, 85, of Rochester, died at 5:55 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009 at Hickory Creek, Rochester.
She is survived by her children: Marsha and John Roberts, Mary Anne and Mark Heishman, and Carl and Cathy Adley, all of Rochester; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 and for one hour prior to the service Friday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at the IOOF cemetery.

Lawrence Gray, Sr. Owens
ARGOS — Lawrence Gray Owens Sr., 74, Argos, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009 at 5:30 a.m. at his residence, following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 3, 1935 in Salyersville, Ky., to Elzie and Eda (Allen) Owens and had lived in the Argos community since 1950, coming from the Bass Lake and Knox area.
He married
Vada (Scott) Owens Dec. 30, 1955 in Plymouth.
He was a dairy farmer and had a route where he hauled milk for local farmers. He was a avid bowler, bowling in leagues in Rochester for the Plow Boys team. He and his wife square danced with the Swinging Dudes. He was a graduate of Argos High School, class of 1954.
He is survived by his wife, Vada Owens, of Argos; two sons, L. Gray Owens Jr. and wife Sandy of Rochester; and Bryan Owens and wife B. Louise of Tippecanoe; one daughter, Vonda Delf and husband Dale of Hamilton, Mich., nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Allen Owens and Ray Owens, and a great-grandchild.
Friends may visit with the family Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Brian Sewell of the Whippoorwill Community Church, Rochester, officiating.
Burial will take place at Maple Grove cemetery, Argos.

John B. Smith
ARGOS — John B. Smith, 71, of Argos, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009.
He is survived by his wife Ellen; children: John (Janice) Rose Jr. of Culver, Peggy (Steve) Smith of Big Sandy, Tenn., Fred (Lisa) Rose of Okeechobee, Fla., Harold (Barb) Rose of Big Sandy, Tenn., and Theresa Rose of Argos; siblings: Marianne Fisher of Nappanee, Irene Kmicikewicz of Nappanee, Francis Brady of Texas, Albert Rose of Plymouth, and Charlie Rose of Nappanee; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9 at M.C. Smith Funeral Home, Knox.
Funeral services will take place at noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Jacobs cemetery, North Judson.
Lucille I. Snyder
COLUMBIANA, Ohio — Lucille I. Snyder, 97, of Columbiana, formerly of Plymouth, died at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (Vernon) Bame of Bowling Green, Ohio, Charlotte Jones of Alamogordo, N.M., and Bowling Green, Ohio; one son, Lowell (Cheryl) Snyder of Columbiana, Ohio; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation and funeral services were held Dec. 9, 2009 at the Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana with Rev. John Bartholomew and Pastor Douglas DeMar officiating.
Burial was in Columbiana cemetery.

Melissa M. Eckert
PLYMOUTH — Melissa Marie Eckert, also affectionately known as “Liz”, “Little Eskimo” and “Mama”, 77, died at her residence at 11:10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2009.
She will be remembered lovingly for her devotion to her five grandchildren and her “little monkey, ” her great granddaughter. She liked to tell stories and play with her little ones.
Melissa was born Aug. 31, 1932. She was the daughter of Jessie and Minnie Whitesell Gaines.
She graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1950.
On July 6, 1952, Melissa and Merle E. Eckert, Sr., were married
in the First Assembly of God Church. Melissa worked as a telephone operator for the phone company and as a floor clerk and cashier for Grant’s store.
A strong believer in God, she was an avid and devoted reader of the Bible.
Melissa enjoyed word puzzles; she teased her family and friends a lot and was good at cheating in Uno and playing games such as checkers with her grandchildren.
Melissa is survived by her husband, a son, and three daughters. Her son is Merle Eugene Eckert, Jr. of Plymouth; and her daughters are Cynthia Maria (Kenneth) Johnson, Jonesboro, Ark.; Beth Ann Riggins of Mentone; and Linda Kay Whitt of Plymouth.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Friends are invited to share memories and visit with Melissa’s family from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Lowell Ott, will be held in the funeral home Thursday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Tina Marie Ewing
KOONTZ LAKE — Tina Marie Ewing, 46, of Koontz Lake, formerly of South Bend, died in Hospice House, South Bend, Monday, Dec. 7.
Survivors include her husband, Marion; one daughter, Jennifer Penrod of South Bend; one son, Haven Ewing at home; mother, Sharon and Thom Howard of South Bend; father, Gerald and Chris Huys of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Tracy (Gary) Baeb of Orlando and Tonya Beck of Koontz Lake; one step-daughter, Chalee Ewing of Osceola; two step-sons, Talon Ewing and M.C. Ewing, both of South Bend; grandmother, Martha Howard of Lakeville; as well as cousins and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 4 p.m. (Central Time) at the Koontz Lake Missionary Church with Pastor Brian Baughman officiating.
Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church.
