Mattie L. Rainey
PLYMOUTH — Mattie L. Rainey, 92, of Plymouth, formerly of Kewanna, died at 4 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009 at Pilgrim Manor Healthcare Center, Plymouth.
Born April 2, 1917 in Hawkins County, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rosa
(Manes) MacLain. On May 15, 1937 she married
Dorsie C. Rainey and he preceded her in death July 2, 1981.
Mattie was a former seamstress at Hart-Schaffner & Marx in Rochester and had also been a cook at Kewanna High School.
She was a member of Thornhope Community Holiness Church and she enjoyed quilting and working in her flower garden.
Survivors include daughters: Mary Fox of Mitchell and Carol Johnson of Ft. Wayne; son, Bruce (Joy) Rainey of Dandridge, Tenn.; brother, Lawrence (Mabel) MacLain of Kewanna; sisters: Jessie Hines of Royal Center, Ruth (James) Hart of Argos, Emily Brown of Knox, Flora (Austin) Conley, Marilyn Zartman, and Gladys Stutzman, all of Plymouth, and Merle Isaacs of Ft. Myers, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by brothers: Samuel “Hugh” and William Clifford MacLain; and sisters: Roxie Fry and Blanche Culver; and a son, Paul Rainey.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Homes, Kewanna.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 19, at the funeral home with Pastor David Webb officiating. Burial will be at Bruce Lake cemetery, Kewanna.

WINAMAC — Ray N. Carey, 77, of Knox, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.
He is survived by his wife Patricia; sons: Mike (Janet) Carey of North Liberty and Chuck (Jennie)
Carey of Plymouth; a sister, Phyllis (Bill) Wayne of Calif.; brothers: Jim (Beth) Carey of Fla. and
Al (Delores) Carey of Fla.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 4 to 8 p.m. at M.C. Smith Funeral Home, Knox.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Bass Lake cemetery.

TIPPECANOE — Grace M. Creviston, 86, of Tippecanoe, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 at 12:12
a.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth.
She is survived by sons: Fearol (Betty) Baxter and Robin Ritchison, all of Tippecanoe; three
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; step-children: Lois Baker,
Rachael Baker and Carl Ritchison; sisters: Ora Petty and Wanda Lane, both of Dixon, Tenn.;
and brothers: Al Watkins of Crawfordsville, Chuck Watkins of Dixon, Tenn., Bill Watkins of
White Bluff, Tenn. and John Watkins of Dixon, Tenn.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home,
115 S. Main St., Bourbon. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 at the funeral
home. Burial will follow at Tippecanoe cemetery, Tippecanoe.
Pollyanna Smith
GROVERTOWN-Pollyanna Smith, 76, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 in Porter Hospital, Valparaiso Campus.
She is survived by her husband, Harold; a son, Dennis Smith of Grovertown; one daughter,
Diane Stacy of Knox; one grandson; brothers: Donald (Donnis) French of Georgia and Larry
French of Ohio; sisters: Peggy (Harry) Bucher of Florida and Connie Forgrave of Ohio; and one
sister-in-law, Betty French of LaCrosse.
Visitation will take place Thursday, Nov. 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. (Central Time) at Rannells Funeral
Home, Hamlet Chapel and Friday after from 10 to 11 a.m.
Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be
given to the American Cancer Society.
Connie Nees Vansteenberg
ROCHESTER — Connie Nees Vansteenberg, 64, of Rochester, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 at
11:30 a.m. at Hickory Creek Health Care of Rochester.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Bryant of Rochester; three nieces; and five nephews.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17 and an hour prior to services
Wednesday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18th Street, Rochester.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at
Rochester’s IOOF cemetery. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Hickory Creek, Hope

NAPPANEE — Richard Alan Best, 87, of Nappanee, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 at his home.
He is survived by his wife, Maryellen; son, Randall (Karen) Best of Massillon, Ohio; daughters:
Cynthia (Roger) Heckaman of Syracuse, Cathlin Stuntz of Republic, Mo. and Elizabeth (Phil)
Keiser of Sauk City, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren;
and a brother, William (Kris) Best of Nappanee.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 Saturday, Nov. 21 and one hour prior to services

ROCHESTER — Jerry DeVane Blanchard, 65, of Rochester, died at 2:18 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16,
2009 at The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, South Bend.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; daughters: Kim Corbin of Rochester and Tammy Boetsma of
Rochester; sons: Daniel Blanchard of Austin, Texas, Christopher (Angie) Blanchard of Austin,
Texas and Kairon (Amber Kale) Corbell of Rochester; and two brothers: Bobby (Nancy) Van Lue
of Rochester and Larry Van Lue of Rochester.
Visitation will take place one hour prior to services Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 at Good Family
Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester.
Funeral services will take place Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at a later date at Rochester IOOF cemetery, Rochester.

He is survived by his wife Beth; a daughter, Taylor Larson of Peru, Ind.; sons: John Larson of
Kansas City, Mo., Ryne Martin of Indianapolis, D.J. Stair of Rochester and William Stair of
Rochester; mother, Shirley Larson of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; sisters: Nancy Watts of Palm
Beach Gardens, Fla. and Berta (Ted) Sabatello of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; sisters-in-law:
Jennie (Ryan) Mullett of South Bend and Missy Martin of Rochester; brother-in-law, Kevin Martin
of Rochester; and mother-in-law, Sally Martin of Rochester.
Visitation will take place one hour prior to services Friday, Nov. 20.

PLYMOUTH — Richard M. Day Sr., 92, of Plymouth, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 at 11:32
a.m. at Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home.
Visitation will take place Saturday, Nov. 21 from 1 to 2 p.m. at New Oakhill cemetery Chapel, Plymouth.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday with burial to follow.

PLYMOUTH — Douglas Gangloff, 47, of Plymouth, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 at 8:08 a.m.
in Fulton County.
Visitation will take place Sunday, Nov. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W.
Madison St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will take place Monday, Nov. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. Michael Catholic cemetery.
Helen Wyness Marr
Helen Wyness Marr, 52, of Russiaville, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday in her home
following an extended illness.
Helen was born Sept. 5, 1957, in Maracaibo, Venezuela, to Betty Lucy Eileen Thomas Marr and
Dennis Trevor Llewellyn Marr, MBE, of Raglan, Wales, United Kingdom. Her father, Dennis, was
the honorary British consul in Venezuela.
Helen spent her childhood in Venezuela and came to the United States in the 1970s to receive a
high school education in Vermont. After graduation she was reunited with her parents in Marco
Island, Fla., where she worked in hotel management for the Ritz-Carlton and Radisson Hotels.
Helen remained in the Marco Island and Naples, Fla., area until moving to Indiana in 1991. Upon
her move to Indiana she attended Indiana Wesleyan University and worked for the state of
Indiana's Department of Education as a migrant case worker.
Helen enjoyed traveling to Florida to visit friends, made a trip to Venezuela and returned to
Wales several times to visit her parents. She enjoyed music, friends, playing board games, golf,
campfires, the outdoors and all of her animals including Boots, Buddy, Maddie, Emily, Schatzie
and Ms. Celie. Helen was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the
American Buckskin Association.
Helen is survived by a life "ole soul" companion, Linda Rae Politz, and Indiana Mom Helen Sr.,
both of Kokomo; one sister, Fiona Llewellyn Marr, Raglan, Wales; one niece, Dr. Eliana Romero
Teague and husband Ryan Neilan Teague, and great-niece Alicia Rhys Teague, all of Houston, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stout & Son Funeral Home, Russiaville
Chapel, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville. Pastor Jason Grant will officiate. Friends may call one hour
before the service at the funeral home.

THREE RIVERS, Mich. — Eleanor L. (Zartman) Winrotte, 81, of Three Rivers, Mich., formerly of
Plymouth, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008. Cremation was conducted.
A memorial service will held Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist
Church in Three Rivers.
Memorial donations may be sent to UMCOR in care of the United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are being handled by the Eickhoff, Farrand, Halverson Chapel of Three Rivers.
Harold "Barky", Jr. Bartman
SYRACUSE — Harold "Barky" Bartman Jr., 84, of Syracuse, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 at 2:14
p.m. at Goshen General Hospital after a short, unexpected illness.
He is survived by a son, Joe (Marilyn) Bartman of Syracuse; a daughter, Kathryn Bartman of
Milford; four grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Betty (Leroy) Chokey of
Nappanee, Ruth Filley of Rochester, and Carmen Bickham of Rochester.
Visitation took place from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral
Home, 950 N. Main St., Nappanee.
