Lois J. Meek
NAPPANEE — Lois J. Meek, 83, of Nappanee, died Tuesday, Nov. 3 following a short illness.
She is survived by daughters: Linda and Glen DeMien of Nappanee and Gayle and Robert
Griffee of Elkhart; sons: Rev. Gary and Lena Meek of Lynn, Ind. and Jerry and Roberta Meek of
Nappanee; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Thompson-Lengacher and Yoder Funeral
Home, Nappanee. Services are Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. John
Wrightsam officiating. Burial will be at Union Center cemetery. Memorial contributions may be
made to Ribbon of Hope.
Phyllis J. Roy
WARSAW — Phyllis J. Roy, 83, Warsaw, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Miller’s Merry Manor
Nursing Home of Warsaw.
She is survived by her seven children: Georgia and Tom Coyle of Texas, Phillip and Carolyn Roy
of Columbia City, Andrea (Roy) Jones of Columbus, Ohio, Sydney Roy of Warsaw, India and
Tony Castenada of Munster, Dana and husband Craig Byrd of Camas, Wash. and Gina and Ken
Ashpole of Leesburg along with sixteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She also has four sisters: Francis Sopher of Coeur D. Alene, Idaho, Martha Klevjier of Federal
Way, Wash., Nancy & Marc Marcusson of Fall Brook, Calif., Ruth White of Eugene, Ore.; and a
brother: Robert Baker of Washington Circle, Ohio.
Phyllis bequeathed her body to medical science therefore there will be no formal services at this
time. However, the family would welcome friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the DeatonClemens
Funeral Home at 115 S. Main St. Bourbon, to help celebrate her life.
Burial with her husband in the Parks cemetery will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may
be made to the Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County in her memory. Deaton-Clemens
Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Howard E. “Bob” Schafer
BREMEN – Howard E. “Bob” Schafer, 95, a lifetime area resident, died at 6:18 a.m. on
Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009 at the Community Hospital of Bremen.
Howard was born on Jan. 13, 1914, the second oldest of eight children of Elton P. and Pearl
Baughman Schafer. At birth, Howard only weighed 3 lbs., 10 oz. His mother kept him on the
oven door to keep his tiny little body warm. At age 16, he only weighed 65 lbs.
He grew up on a farm on Osborne Road in Lakeville, and quit school in the 8th grade to help with
the family farm.
On June 24, 1939, Howard and Nina C. Albert were married
in South Bend. They bought their
farm on Oct. 14, 1940, where they still reside.
Besides farming, Howard also worked at the mint marsh, at the LaPaz elevator, drove school
bus for Lapaz schools for 12 years, and was on the Marshall County ASCS Committee for over 20 years.
A hog farmer, Howard still enjoyed having hogs on the farm that his grandson takes care of. He
was a charter member of the Marshall County Pork Producers, helping with their fund raisers,
and also helped for many years at the Marshall County 4-H Fair.
Howard is survived by Nina, his wife of 70 years, two daughters: Janet Gottlieb of Hobart and
Connie Ullery of Bremen, four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Also surviving are a brother, Lyle Schafer of California, two sisters-in-law: Val June Schafer and
Dorothy Schafer, both of Lakeville, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Four brothers: Ralph, Glenn, Roy and Charles Schafer
and two sisters: Mildred Hayes and Mary Baughman.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6 in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral
Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Calling will continue after 9 a.m. until time of services at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 in the
Plymouth Missionary Church, 1350 E. Jefferson St., where he was a member, officiated by the
Rev. Patrick Puglisi.
Burial will follow in Bremen cemetery.
Memorial gifts in Howard’s name may be given to the Marshall County 4-H Fair Board.
Rosemond G. Swan
CULVER — Rosemond G. Swan, 74, Culver, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 5:43 p.m., at her home.
She is survived by her daughter; Geneva Van Houten of Crystal, Mich.; her sons, Herman
Maxon of Monterey, Francis Maxon of Missouri, Jeff Maxon of Michigan, and Phil Maxon of
Culver; her sisters, Grace Cole of Plymouth and Bonnie Lee of Culver; her brothers, Rex Allen,
Pat Allen of DeLong, and Russ Allen of DeLong; 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren;
and four great-great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation or funeral services.
Van Gilder Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Jamie Lynn Vervynckt
PLYMOUTH – Jamie Lynn Vervynckt, 30, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, at St. Joseph Regional
Medical Center, Plymouth, following an unexpected illness.
Survivors include her parents Steve and Brenda of Plymouth, her sister; Jennifer A. Vervynckt
and fiancée Blaine Vermilyer and their son Colten of Walkerton, her brother; Joseph M.
Vervynckt and Jessica Russo of Plymouth and maternal grandparents Max and Mary Shirley of
Lakeville along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N.
Michigan St., Plymouth. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Burial will follow in the New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Jerry Wayne Cannon
PLYMOUTH — Jerry Wayne Cannon, 54, of Plymouth, died Thursday, Nov. 5, at his home.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Cannon, of Plymouth, two daughters: Brenda (Kevin)
Ketcham, of LaPaz, and Mandy (Jerimy) Carner, of Wakarusa; one son Kyle (Autumn) Cannon,
of Plymouth; 10 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; two brothers: Lester (Sue) Cannon, of
Bremen and Larry (Rosina) Cannon, of South Bend; and one sister, Bonnie Hershburger as well
as his mother-in-law Martha (Willard) Messman, of Plymouth.
Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov.9, at the funeral home with the Rev. Max Abbott
officiating. Burial will be at Bremen cemetery. Memorials contributions may be made to the
family.
Justin M. DeCrow
PLYMOUTH — SSG Justin M. Decrow, 32, a family man and career serviceman with the United
States Army, was tragically killed in the events at Ft. Hood, Texas on Thursday, Nov. 5.
Justin, a resident of Evans, Ga. and formerly of Plymouth is survived by his high school
sweetheart and wife of 13 years Marikay DeCrow, and his 13 year old daughter, Kylah N.
DeCrow. He is also survived by proud parents: mother; Rhonda (Atkins) Thompson, step-father;
Todd Thompson both of Plymouth and father; Daniel J. DeCrow and his fianceé, Colleen Becht,
Dan is a Vietnam Veteran, they reside in Fulton, Ind. a brother; Cody Abel Thompson, maternal
grandmother; Pauline J. Atkins and his in-laws; Roy C. and Sandy (Krieghbaum) Sickman all of Plymouth.
Justin was born September 11, 1977 in Valparaiso, and graduated from Plymouth High School in
1996, where he was involved in the wrestling and football programs. He also worked hard on the
farm and was a good cook having worked at the Hayloft Restaurant. Justin possessed great
technical skills when it came to a computer.
In March of 1996, he married
Marikay Sickman and joined the military that summer. His
daughter Kylah Nicole was born two weeks after he left for basic training. He served faithfully in
the military for 13 years, and recently returned from South Korea where he specialized in satellite
communications. He had been stationed at Fort Hood since September, and after finding out
that he was being deployed to Iraq his wife and daughter continued to live in the family home
near Fort Gordon.
Rhonda and Todd raised Justin to be a man of good character who loved and took exceptional
care of his family. Justin and Marikay celebrated nearly 14 happy years of marriage. His
infectious charm and wit always put others at ease, and drew him many friends. He will be
greatly missed by all.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13 at Plymouth Wesleyan
Church, 11203 S. Michigan Road.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 in the Plymouth Wesleyan Church. The Rev.
David Terhune will officiate.
With a Patriot Guard escort, burial will immediately follow with full Military Honors in Plymouth’s
New Oakhill cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests gifts in Justin’s name be given to Kylah Nicole’s College
Assistance Fund, c/o 2508 Grier Circle, Evans, GA 30809.
Sheri Lynn Pinter-Price
BREMEN — Sheri Lynn Pinter-Price, 52, of Bremen, passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 at the
Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born Oct. 14, 1957 in Mishawaka to Warren and Lois (Beopple) Walton. On May 25,
1996 she married
Gregory Price. He survives.
Sheri was a 1976 graduate of Penn High School; she owned a trucking company, enjoyed golf
and was an avid NASCAR fan.
Survivors include husband Gregory Price of Bremen; a son, Andy (Lacy Walker) Pinter of
Bremen; a daughter, Melanie (Andy) McMillen of Plymouth; three sisters: Linda Evans of
Clearwater, Fla., Pattie (Rick) Penzenik of South Bend, and Susan (Kelly) Klink of South Bend;
her mother, Lois Walton of Granger; and mother- and father-in-law Harold and Alice Price of Bremen.
She was preceded in death by her father. She was loved by family and many friends.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9 at Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the funeral home.
Memorials contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a cancer fund of the
donor’s choice.
Dean C. Gridley
PLYMOUTH – Dean C. Gridley, 88, of Plymouth, died of natural causes in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home,
Friday, November 6, 2009.
Born in West Chicago Ill., October 8, 1921, Dean was the son of Floyd and Florence W. Dean Gridley.
He graduated from West Chicago Schools in 1940.
In World War II, Dean served his country in the military in the Army Air Corps.
On November 4, 1972, in Plymouth, Dean and Mary E. Beam were married
. Dean worked for the
Del Monte Corp. for 23 years, retiring in 1985.
Dean enjoyed camping and traveling and had visited Italy and Ireland. He was a stamp collector
and had fun making and running model trains.
Dean is survived by his spouse and three sons: Bruce E. (Roseanne) Gridley, South Carolina:
Dr. Barry L. (Joanne) Gridley, Ohio, and Glenn Gridley, Plymouth.
Three step sons also survive. They are: Steven D. (Carol) Beam, Walkerton, Michael B. ( Janet)
Beam, Plymouth and Daniel D. (Jeanne) Beam, Warsaw.
A brother, Robert Conklin, Youngstown, Ohio, survives as well. He is also survived by six
grandchildren, seven step grandchildren and 17 step great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to share memories with the family on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 12 to 2 p.m. at
the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services will be
held at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Ron Liechty and the Rev. Robin Keating, pastor
of the First United Church of Christ where Dean was a member, will officiate.
A full military graveside service at the New Oakhill cemetery will be accorded to Dean by the
American Legion Post 27 and the VFW #1162.
Memorials in Dean’s memory may be made to the First United Church of Christ, 321 N. Center
St., Plymouth, IN 46563.
Caritas Rose (Harrell) Liggett
INDIANAPOLIS — Sarita Rose (Harrell) Liggett, 66, of Indianapolis, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009.
She was born in Shelby County to Oren Cecil and Dorothy S. (Schnaitter) Harrell July 7, 1943.
Mrs. Liggett graduated from Morristown High School in 1961 and Ball State University in 1966.
She became a Home Economics teacher at Manchester High School and Indianapolis Public
Schools for 30 years, retiring in 2007. She was a member of the Indiana State Teachers
Association, Marlon County Democrats and Ball State Alumni Association; she attended Fairland
United Methodist Church.
Liggett was an avid Colts fan and enjoyed an active lifestyle in Indianapolis, seeing the latest
museum attractions and dining spots. Those who knew her say they were privileged to have had
her in their lives and that she made a huge impact in many lives and will never be forgotten.
She is survived by sons: Brent (Kiki) Liggett of Fishers and Mark (Heather) Liggett of Austin,
Texas; grandsons: Travis Liggett of Warsaw and Thomas Liggettt and Grayson Liggett, both of
Austin, Texas; and a granddaughter, Ryann Liggett of Fishers.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, Nov. 10 from noon to 2 p.m. at Freeman Family Funeral
Homes and Crematory, Carmony-Ewing Chapel, 819 S. Harrison St., Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with burial to follow at Forest Hill cemetery.
