Amber Starr McMillen
ARGOS — Amber Starr McMillen, 30 of Argos, died Friday, Oct. 16, at 10:23 p.m. at County
Road 600 North in Starke County near Koontz Lake following a automobile accident.
She was born May 30, 1979 in Plymouth to Richard L. Dixon Jr. and Deborah Isom and had lived
all of her life in the Marshall County area.
She is survived by three children: Seth Garrison, Hailey McMillen and Niko McMillen; her father,
Richard L. Dixon Jr. and his fiancé Susan Good of Argos; three brothers: Ricky Dixon and wife
Stacy of LaPaz, Chad Isom and Jason Banister of Plymouth; her paternal grandfather, Richard
Dixon Sr. of Plymouth; and maternal grandmother, Roberta Isom of West Virginia.
She was preceded in death by a grandmother, Pat Dixon; and mother, Deb Conklin in July of 2009.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 208
N. Michigan St., Argos with Rev. Robert Rice of the Walnut Church of the Brethren, Argos,
officiating.

Patricia S. Hicks
SOUTH BEND — Patricia S. Hicks, 84, of South Bend, died at 8:55 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17,
2009 in the Milton Home.
She is survived by two children: Rosemary (Tom) Berndt of South Bend and Eddie D. Hicks of
Toledo, Ohio; three granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place Monday, Oct. 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral
Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. At the funeral home.
Burial will follow in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Leonard A. Walavich
DONALDSON — Leonard A. Walavich, 91, of Donaldson, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 at
Catherine Kasper Life Center, Donaldson.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary (Terry) Bortell of Knox.
Visitation will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 at Catherine Kasper
Life Center Chapel, Donaldson.
Burial will follow at McKinley Gardens cemetery, Winamac.

Larry E. Hatcher
PLYMOUTH — Larry E. Hatcher, age 67, Nursey Street, Plymouth, passed away at 7:16 a.m.
Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Elkhart Hospice House, Elkhart.
Larry was born May 28, 1942, in Finley, Ohio to Lester B. and Clara (Solomon) Hatcher. On
June 9, 1963, Larry and the former Joyce A. Nier were united in marriage.
Together they raised their two children. Larry retired from Bendix Corporation in South Bend. He
was a member of the Plymouth Moose Lodge and the Methodist Church of Bourbon.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Joyce Hatcher of Plymouth; their daughter, Kathy
(John) Wade of Plymouth; their son, Larry Hatcher, Jr. of Plymouth; his grandchildren: Mariah
Norwick, Justin Nettrouer, Nick Wade and Ashley Wade; his great-grandson, Braden Robinson;
and his sister, Sandra (Mitch) Bradford of Crossville, Tenn.
The family would like for memorial contributions to be given to the Center for Hospice and
Palliative Care, 112 S. Center St., Plymouth, IN, 46563.

Ronald Lee Humes
PLYMOUTH – Ronald Lee Humes, 63, a Plymouth resident for the past 26 years, died at his
residence, surrounded by his loving family and Hospice, Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at 1 a.m.
Ron was born at home in Starke county Aug. 7, 1946, the son of Irvin S. and Mabel A. Dickson
Humes. He had attended school in Knox.
On Dec. 26, 1984 he married
Jerry Marie Sumpter in Plymouth.
As a carpenter, Ron owned J. & R. Construction, and had worked for Humes Homes, Humes
Construction and for Ron Tanner.
An avid C.B Radio fan, he went by the handle “Carpenter Boy” when talking to his many friends.
He also enjoyed attending fish fries at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Delong, Ind.
Ron is survived by his wife, Jerry; five children: Michael Lee Humes of Anderson, Lori Ann and
Scott Hammel of Argos, Kelly Lynn and Jesse Clark of Peru, Matthew Clayton Sumpter-Humes
of Argos and Misty Marie Humes of Argos; several grandchildren; one great granddaughter; a
brother, James (JoAnn) Humes and a sister, Anna Mae (Leonard) Messer, both of knox.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant child; an infant grandson, Austin D.
Overmyer; three brothers: Irvin S. Humes, Howard E. Humes, Robert Humes; and one sister,
Katherine Humes.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services, officiated by the Rev. Floyd Allen, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22,
2009, in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Burr Oak cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be given to the Neighborhood Center for the Toys for Tables program.
Virgie E. Umbaugh
NAPPANEE — Virgie E. Umbaugh, 94, of Nappanee, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009 at LuAnn
Nursing Home, Nappanee at 11:55 a.m.
She is survived by a son, Ralph Umbaugh of Nappanee; daughters: Helen (Loren) Stackhouse
of Warsaw and Linda (Everett) Maurer of Nappanee; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren;
and two brothers: Jim Gall of Oswego and Jake Gall of Elkhart.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 2 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services
Wednesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, 950 N. Main St., Nappanee.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Union Center cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Southern Care Hospice.
Marilyn Weaver
PLYMOUTH — Marilyn Weaver, 76, of 4th Road, Plymouth, died of natural causes at 9:32 p.m.,
Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, in Elkhart Hospice House.
Marilyn was born in Plymouth Oct. 24, 1932. She was the daughter of Reathel Alice (Fruits)
Gordon and Chester “Bluegill” Lyle Gordon.
Marilyn attended Plymouth schools and graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of
1951. She continued her education in Chicago as a medical records keeper and subsequently
worked for more than 50 years for the Plymouth Hospitals in the Medical Records Dept.
Marilyn loved working with the cancer board and assisting doctors to brainstorm their way
through difficult cancer cases to find possible solutions. She was the Director of Medical
Records for more than 30 years.
On October 12, 1952, in Plymouth, she and Robert Weaver were married
. Her husband of 57
years still lives in the home they built together with their own two hands.
Marilyn was involved with the Red Cross as a volunteer and as a member of the Disaster
Committee. She was the 4-H instructor for North Township for 30 years and enjoyed knitting,
cross-stitching sewing and music. While in high school she was part of a talented singing trio.
She and Robert traveled extensively all over the U.S. and Canada.
Marilyn leaves family who will cherish memories of her including three children: Daniel Weaver
and Mike Weaver of Plymouth and Susan Weaver of Delray Beach, Fla. Her brother, Charles
Lyle Gordon, of Plymouth, also survives, together with her grandchildren: Kimberly and Scott
Weaver and Marilyn’s very much cherished great-grandchild, Cailyn.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents.
Friends are invited to celebrate Marilyn’s life with her family Sunday, Oct. 25, from 2 to 6 p.m. at
the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Pastor Ruth Yoder
of the Brethren Church, Plymouth, will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth
Memorial contributions in Marilyn’s memory may be given to the Marshall County Red Cross.
Glenrose E. Bunn
ROCHESTER — Glenrose E. Bunn, 97, of Rochester, died Monday, Oct. 19, 2009 at Hickory
Creek, Rochester.
He is survived by a daughter, Donna Hart of Logansport; eight grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren;
10 great-great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the Good Family Funeral
Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester.
Private family funeral services will be held Thursday with burial to follow at Richland Center
IOOF cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Richland Center United Methodist Church or to the Hickory
Creek Activity Fund.
Philip K. Lash
Philip K. Lash, 90, 6391 S. Indiana 19, Mentone, died at 8:50 a.m. Monday at the Hospice
Home, Fort Wayne.
Philip was born to Raymond and Zelda Blue Lash on July 19, 1919, in Harrison Township,
Kosciusko County, where he was a lifetime area resident. He was married
April 14, 1956, at
Burket to Violet E. Jones who passed away Nov. 22, 1986.
Philip was a school teacher at Mentone High School and Junior High teaching agriculture and
science for five years. Along with teaching he was a grain and livestock farmer.
Philip graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1937. Then he attended Purdue University
where he studied agriculture and graduated in 1941. Philip also served his country in World War
II in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Mentone Masonic Lodge for years and the Mentone
United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann and husband Paul Branson, South Whitley; his son, John
and wife Darlene Lash, Mentone; and three grandchildren, Laura Lash, Indianapolis, David and
wife Kyla Lash, Mentone, and Sarah Lash, Mentone.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Eleanor Chamberlain and Ruth Ellison.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St.,
Mentone, with the Rev. Doris Smith and Pastor Terry Vanlaningham officiating. By the families'
request, there will be no visitation prior to the service. Burial will be in Harrison Center
cemetery, Etna Green.

County Helping Hands.
Paul E. Middleton
PLYMOUTH — Paul E. Middleton, 78, a resident of North Oak Road since 1991, passed away at
his home in the company of his loving family on Monday, Oct. 19, 2009 following an illness.
He was born Feb. 15, 1931 to Cleddie E. and Clem Z. Roberson Middleton in Pleasant Plains,
Ark. And has resided in Plymouth the past 59 years. On April 5, 1953 in South Bend, Paul
married
Pansy J. Griggs who survives.
Paul retired from the Young Door Co. in 1993 after 27 years of service.
His longtime interest in flower and vegetable gardening with his Pansy has been most fulfilling.
Another passion of Paul’s was computer technology which he embraced and loved to share with
others.
Along with his family he was a member of the United Pentecostal Church – House of Prayer.
Surviving along with his wife Pansy of 58 years are three daughters: Wanda J. (Chuck) Rowe,
Linda S. (Mike) Shirk and Darla K. (John Sr.) Wloch, all of Plymouth. Six grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren also survive.
Four surviving siblings are: Alma Sliter, Mayona McDougal, Erlean Brown and D.C. Middleton
with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 in the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Services will be held in the funeral home Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor R.D. Humphrey and
assisted by Aaron Haug. Burial will follow in the New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Betty L. Ogle
WALKERTON — Betty L. Ogle, 79, of Walkerton, passed away Monday, Oct. 19 2009.
Betty was born Jan. 8, 1930 to Harland and Bertha Lancaster. She lived her entire life in the
Walkerton area. Mrs. Ogle was an Eastern Star member and was very active in the senior
citizens center. She was also a past president of the Walkerton Business Women’s Association.
Betty enjoyed sewing, playing cards and bowling. She will be remembered as a loving mother,
grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and mother-in-law. Betty was proceded in death by her
husband: Jim L. Ogle; three brothers: Clyde, Lyle and Donald Lancaster; four sisters: Eleanor
Ballentine, Ruth Stalker, Erma Purvis and Carolyn Johnson.
She is survived by one son, Randy C. Ogle of Walkerton; one daughter, Sandra L. (Greg)
Fassett of Logansport; two grandchildren: Kathleen (Brian) Keppner and Anne Fassett; two great
grandchildren: Sophia Keppner and Cooper Keppner.
Visitation with the family Thursday, Oct. 22 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. (EST) at Nusbaum-Elkin
Funeral Home, 408 Roosevelt Road, Walkerton
There will be an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. (EST) Thursday at the funeral home.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow
in Sumption Prairie cemetery.
