Kevin Rush
ROCHESTER — Kevin Rush, 50, of E. C.R. 900 N., Twelve Mile, Ind., died Wednesday, Aug.
19 at 7:45 p.m. at his home after a sudden illness.
He is survived by his mother, Elsie Rush of Rochester; and two sisters: Carla (Dennis) Ringler of
Ocklawaha, Fla. And Lucinda (Roy) Rudd of Rochester.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the Good Family Funeral Home,
1200 W. 18th St., Rochester.
Funeral services will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Rochester IOOF cemetery.
Ralph Robert Ringer
PLYMOUTH — Ralph Robert Ringer, 85, of 12655 Nataka Trail, died at 2:45 a.m. Thursday,
Aug 20, 2009.
Ralph was born on Jan. 18, 1924 on a farm south of Plymouth to Russel H. and Clara B. Milner
Ringer.
He first attended Oakdale School, a one-room school house and later, Inwood for his 7th and
eighth years. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942 and attended Purdue University for
one year.
As a teenager, Ralph enjoyed the opportunity to be a 4-H-er.
Ralph started to farm in 1945 and moved on the Henry Lawrence farm in the spring of 1946.
The year before, at a Marshall County Rural Youth Club party, in a string game, he was tied at
the wrist of Rose A. Wojcik.
Eleven months later, on Feb. 14, 1946, Ralph and Rose were married
.
They were in the dairy business for 20 years, and continued to farm until his retirement.
After his retirement Ralph and Rose traveled extensively, Ralph was proud to say that he
traveled to all 50 states.
Ralph served on the Plymouth Community School Board that purchased the land and initiated
the construction of the Plymouth High School. For 10 years he was also a member of the
Marshall County R.E.M.C. Board of Directors.
He was on the Board of Directors of the Marshall County Farm Bureau Membership Co-Op, the
Marshall County Plan Commission and the Marshall County Board of Zoning Appeals.
Ralph was a member and served on various boards over the 50 plus years he and his family
attended the Trinity United Methodist Church.
Active in the Democratic Party, he was also a longtime Lions Club member and a strong
supporter of the eyeglass program.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Rose, and three sons and two daughters. They are: Delores M.
Ringer of Lawrence, Kan., Michael A. (Rox Ann) Ringer of Coldwater, Mich., Daniel L. (Janice)
Ringer of Bremen, Larry W.(Cindy) Ringer of Lee’s Summit, Mo. And Carol A. (James) Renna
of Wallingford, Conn.
Seven grandchildren survive as well. They are:Tony Ringer, Dustin Ringer, Ashley Ringer, Jason
Ringer, Jack Renna, Ben Renna and Olivia Renna.
Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Leon C. Ringer who died in an automobile
accident in 1967, a brother, Kenneth Ringer, and a brother-in-law, Edward Wojcik.
Friends are invited to share memories with Ralph’s family Saturday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. in
the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for Ralph will be at 2 pm Sunday, Aug.23, with calling one hour prior to services
at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 425 S. Michigan St., Plymouth. The Reverends Kerry
O’Brien and Paul Nye will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made in Ralph’s name to the Plymouth Lions Club or the Church
Memorial Fund or The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.
Valera E. Shelly
REDDICK, Ill. — Valera E. Shelly, 81, of Reddick, died Thursday, Aug. 20 at ManorCare Health
Services.
She is survived by three daughters: Judy (Don) Harness of Plymouth, Dawn (Brian) Pritchard of
Reddick, Ill. and Denise (Doug) Anderson of Lakeville; a son, Henry (Janet) Shelly of Bonfield,
Ill.; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren; a brother, Marvin (Mary) Marth of
Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sisters: Wilma Scaro of Trenton, Ga. and Pat (Bud) Kenner of Paxton, Ill.;
and one sister-in-law, Wanda Marth of Sherman, Ill.
Visitation was from 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, until the 3 p.m. funeral service at Reddick United
Methodist Church.
Burial was at Round Grove cemetery, Reddick. Van Gilder Funeral Home, Plymouth, handled
local arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Reddick United Methodist Church.
Albert “Abe” Kahn
PLYMOUTH — Albert “Abe” Kahn, 83, died of natural causes at Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth,
at 4:10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2009.
Abe, a resident at 905 E. Berkley, had been a patient in the nursing facility for the past two
weeks. Abe was born Dec. 15, 1925, in Michigan City.
He was the son of Edward C. and Elsie M. (Kirkham) Kahn. He served in the United States
Marine Corp in the South Pacific and Japanese theaters of war during World War II.
On March 15, 1949, in Plymouth, Abe and Betty L. Bixel were married
. Betty died June 12, 2001.
Abe worked with his brother for 29 years at Tom Kahn Sewer Service. He later worked with the
Michigan City Street Department and retired in 1991 prior to his move to Plymouth.
A woodworker and sports fan, he supported the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Cubs and I.U.
basketball. He loved to camp and fish and spent pleasurable times at Jellystone Park.
For the past 11 years, he had wintered in the Sarasota and Sebring, Fla. Area. He was a former
member of the Michigan City Moose Lodge and had attended St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in
Michigan City.
Abe is survived by a daughter, two sons and six grandchildren.
His daughter is Judy K. (Jim) Meece and their children, William and Joseph Meese and Angelia
Moody, Plymouth. His sons are Jack L. Kahn and his children: Joshua, Cory, Kari Kahn, and
Jeffrey A. Kahn, all of Michigan City.
A brother, Robert D. (Nancy) Kahn and a sister, Betty Lou Sales, both of Michigan City and
several nieces and nephews survive as well.
Abe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers and three sisters. They are:
Merle, Wallace, Tom and Roland Kahn. His sisters are: Mary Ann Werdin, Dorothy Ciuewiciz
and Phyllis Nicolson.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. EST Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for Abe will be held Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009 at 1 p.m. in the funeral home.
The Rev. John Parkinson, pastor of the Shiloh Wesleyan Church, Plymouth will officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery with full military honors by members of the Marshall
County VFW Post 1162 and the Plymouth American Legion Post 27.
Memorial gifts in Abe’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association or the
American Red Cross.
Evelyn Lucille Kiel
BREMEN — Evelyn Lucille Kiel, 66, of Bremen, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009 at 3:05 p.m. at
Elkhart Hospice House.
She is survived by her husband, Curtis W. Kiel of Bremen; daughter, Violet (Dean) Lucas of
Bremen; son, Richard E. Kiel Sr. of Bremen; two grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; sister,
Dorothy Pope of Plymouth; and brother, Richard “Butch” Early of Bremen.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Bremen cemetery.
Memorials may be made to The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care.
Elkhart Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.
Shirley R. Burke
MCKEES ROCKS, Penn. — Shirley R. Burke, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009. Shirley was
born in Indianapolis, Feb. 25, 1924 to Clay W. and Ruth Shaw Sparks.
Shirley was a 1948 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing and was an
instructor in several area nursing institutions. She authored five books on the human anatomy.
Shirley's commitment as an alumni was to ensure the future of nursing through the
establishment of the $2 million Shirley Tashiro Burke Endowment in Education and Research.
This selfless gift has assisted the college in maintaining its place as one of the world's premier
colleges of nursing in the provision of innovative, active learning and responsiveness to national
mandates to transform nursing education and to change the healthcare landscape.
She was the widow of Dr. Tashiro and of Edward Burke M.D.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Betty G. Sparks; nieces: Sue Schepman and Patti Jo Sparks;
nephews: Michael and John Sparks all of Brownstown, Ind.; several loving cousins and a dear
friend Eleanor McAndrews and her extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; step-mother Louise Neal Sparks and
brother, Dale K. Sparks.
Services and inturnment are private.

Walter L. Maybee
PLYMOUTH — Walter L. Maybee, 81, 5704 Michigan Rd., Plymouth, died of natural causes in
Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at 11 p.m.
Walter was born on Oct. 7, 1927, in Soldiers Grove, Wis. He was the son of Roy Maybee and
Florence Hutchcroft.
Walter attended Soldiers Grove schools in Wisconsin.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II, from 1944 to 1946.
On Aug. 16, 1947, in Soldiers Grove, Walter and Betty Swiggum were married
. Betty died on
Feb. 28, 1997.
Walter was a Teamster truck driver from A.B.F. For 30-plus years and was awarded honors for
driving over 2 million miles without an accident.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the VFW Post 1162, and the American Legion Post 27.
He attended the Blissville Church of the Brethren.
Walter is survived by a daughter and three sons. His daughter is Valerie Hoefert, Pine Mountain,
Ga. His sons are: Gary (Vicki) Maybee, Lonnie Maybee and Kim (Debbie) Maybee, all of Plymouth.
Grandchildren surviving are: Gary and Vicki’s children: Tammy (James) Radican: Jan (Mary
Lee) Gustafson and Beth (Tom) Kollars.
Valerie’s children are: Tina Harness and Jeremy (Christy) Harness.
Mary Rodriquez, his lifetime companion, also survives, together with three sisters: Imogene
Turban, Fairyville, Wis.: Alice Turban and Pauline Skrade, all of Soldiers Grove, Wis.
Walter is survived by Mary’s children, Mary Jane Conlreras, Wanda Farrar, Bill Russell, Larry
(Carol) Rodriquez and Richard (Brenda) Rodriquez.
He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, a son, Robert and two sisters, Shirley and Beverly.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, from 4 to 8 p. m. in the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
The funeral for Walter, conducted by the Rev. Wilson Shabaz of the will be held in the funeral
home at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009.
Full military graveside honors will be accorded to Walter by the VFW Post 1162 and the
Plymouth American Legion Post 27 at the Tyner cemetery, Tyner.
Memorials in Walter’s memory may be given to the Marshall County Cancer Association or the
American Lung Association.

Virginia Olds
HAMLET — Virginia Olds, 86, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009 in Our Lady of Peace Hospital, South Bend.
Survivors include daughter, Brenda Secord of Hamlet; son, Lowell Olds of Jessieville, Ark., nine
grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 2 p.m. (CDT) at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet
Chapel. Burial will be at the Fletcher cemetery, Hamlet. Visitation is Wednesday from 10 a.m.
CDT until the time of services at the funeral home.
Alta I. West
MONTEREY — Alta I. West, 60, of Monterey, died at 11:20 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009 at
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.
There will be no services. Cremation will take place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, La
Porte is in charge of the arrangements.

ARGOS — Virginia P. Burger, 81, of Argos, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at 3:20 p.m. at home.
She is survived by a daughter, Virginia (Art) Moore of Dallas, Ga. ; sons: James R. (Judith)
Burger and John R. (Karen) Burger, all of Plymouth; four grandchildren; and brother, Carl (Betty)
Burger in Yukon, Okla. By her husband.
Family services will be held at the Peaceful Meadows cemetery in Dallas, Ga.
