Donnon M. “Don” De Fur
NOBLESVILLE — Donnon M. “Don” De Fur, 76, of Noblesville, died Feb. 1, 2009.
Don was born Christmas Day, 1932 in Muncie to the late Earl and and Vivian (Cheatham) De Fur.
He was a 1950 graduate of Burris High School, and in 1954 earned his bachelor’s eegree from
Indiana University. While at I.U. he was a Senior Manager of 1953-54 NCAA National
Championship Basketball Team and was a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity and the I
Men’s Club. Don later furthered his education by attending Ball State University for Graduate
Studies.
A significant part of Don’s youth was spent attending summers at Culver Military Academy,
where during college he returned to teach sailing.
Don served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1955-1956 during the occupation
of Germany.
The majority of his professional career was spent as District Sales Manager for the Oldsmobile
Division of G.M., retiring as the Zone Development Manager in 1987.
Don had a passionate personal interest in several farms in Indiana and Missouri, which he
owned and managed since 1980.
He attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Following his retirement he and his loving wife
Elna found great enjoyment in Ballroom Dancing to Big Band Music and wide-spread travel.
Don is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 51 years, Elna (Beyler) De Fur; his children: D.
Kyle and wife Dana, Colette De Fur Ritter and husband Rock S.; his greatest pride and joy were
his grandchildren: Grant Ritter, Drake Ritter, Cameron De Fur and Clayton De Fur.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center –
Carmel, 325 E. Carmel Dr. Carmel, IN 46032.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009 at the Flanner and Buchanan
Funeral Center – Carmel.
Private family burial will follow at New Oak Hill cemetery in Plymouth.

Don’s family would like to extend a deep gratitude for the many wonderful caregivers who freely
gave of themselves to make the difficult journey of his passing bearable.
Ruth E. Brant
Ruth E. Brant, 87, of Estero, Fla., formerly of Bowling Green, Ind., and Walkerton, passed into
God's House Monday, Feb. 2, 2009.
She was born on Feb. 12, 1921, in Bowling Green, Indiana, to Etta (Orman) and Skyler Arney.
Ruth married
Philemon Brant on Nov. 30, 1938. He preceded her in death on Jan.12, 1980.
Mrs. Brant is survived by twin daughters: June (Jerry, deceased) Wiegand and Jean (Joseph)
Lowry. She was preceded in death by her brother, Rex Arney. She is also survived by four
grandsons: James, Jason (Carla), and Jonathan (Sherri) Wiegand and Brian (Rose) Lowry;
seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Brant loved to make quilts and crochet afghans. She gave many to relatives and friends.
She always had tomato plants blooming at her home in Florida.
VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563, is handling the
arrangements. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the
Woodlawn cemetery in Walkerton.
Shirley L. Carter
PLYMOUTH — Mr. Shirley L. Carter, 87, of Plymouth, died Feb. 2, 2009. Born Jan. 22, 1922, in
Grass Creek, Ind. he was the son of the late Ernest and Goldie (Good) Carter. On Sept. 18,
1943, he married
the former Marjorie Wentzel. She survives. Also surviving are three sons and
one daughter: James (Susie) of Traverse City, Mich., Robert (Jane) of Big Rapids, Mich., Valerie
(David) Kemble of Kewanna and Jeffrey (Janice) of Mishawaka; sister, Phyllis Adams of Argos;
eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and one more on the way;
and his beloved dog, Daisy.
Shirley formerly lived in Culver, Niles, and Goshen, before settling in Plymouth. As a youth, he
caddied at the Culver Military Academy Golf Course; and became an avid and accomplished
golfer. He played regularly at Plym Park Golf Course in Niles, Mich. Also, Shirley was a proud
veteran who served nine years in the Army Air Corp. During WWII, he served two tours of duty in
Panama with the 53rd fighter group, and obtained the rank of Master Sergeant. He also served
in the Korean War.
A memorial service will be held at New Song Community Church, 400 N. Kingston, off E.
Jefferson, Plymouth, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the church.
Paul E. Dickson
CRAWFORDSVILLE — Paul E. Dickson, 83, of Crawfordsville, passed away Monday morning,
Feb. 2, 2009 at his home.
Mr. Dickson was a former County Commissioner, he also served on the County Council of
Montgomery County and was a precinct committeeman. He was Past Master of the Alamo
Masonic Lodge #144 and was a member of the Scottish Rite of South Bend, DAV, American
Legion of Waynetown, was Past President of the Montgomery County Board of Realtors and a
past member of Kiwanis.
Mr. Dickson was in the Army 3rd Armored Division in World War II. He was shot in Germany and
received a Purple Heart.
He was self-employed installing heating systems, then working with gravel and heavy equipment
and then received his real-estate license in 1965. He attended school in Mace and New Ross.
Mr. Dickson was born June 25, 1925 in Mace to Waldo F. and Anna Jane Joseph Dickson. He
married
Oveta Edith Swank on March 1, 1945 in New Richmond. She passed away on Oct. 11, 2008.
Survivors include four daughters: Linda (Mike) Simms of Crawfordsville, Karen (David) Gehrke
of Plymouth, Janet (Marvin) Moffett and Donna (Bill) Runkle, both of Lafayette as well as eight
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters: Doris Bottom, Leah Rohr and Wilma Birge.
Family and friends may pay their respects Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Burkhart Funeral
Home, Crawfordsville, with Masonic rites at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m.
with Chaplain Norris Keirn officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Waynetown Masonic
cemetery.

Danny L. Slaybaugh
NAPPANEE — Danny L. Slabaugh, 68, of Nappanee, died at 2:58 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 at
Elkhart General Hospital.
He is survived by his mother, Lois M. Slabaugh of Nappanee; sister, Kim (David) Ingle of
Nappanee; and brothers: Billy Slabaugh, Jody Slabaugh and Mikel Slabaugh, all of Nappanee.
Funeral services are Thursday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral
Home, Nappanee, with visitation one hour prior. Cremation will take place.
Burial will be at South Union cemetery with military graveside services.
Memorials may be made to the Nappanee American Legion.
Jereme Matthew Greene
BREMEN — Jereme Matthew Greene, 30, of Bremen, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, in Plymouth.
He is survived by daughter: Leila Jo Greene; his mother, Jill Greene of Plymouth; and his
grandmother, Janice Reese of Bremen.
Services will be held Monday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. at Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen. Burial will
take place at the Bremen cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until time of service Monday at the
funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be used toward the funeral expenses.
Charles Glen O'Connor
ROCHESTER — Charles Glen O’Connor, 76, of Rochester, died at 4:57 a.m. Feb. 3, 2009 at
Woodlawn Hospital of Rochester after a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 16, 1932 in Liberty
Township, St. Joseph County to William Fay and Lilly Sophia (Reed) O’Connor. He married
Betty
L. Sumey on Nov. 25, 1994 in Argos.
Charles lived in Fulton County since 1995 moving there from Argos. He was an electrician
working with Miller’s Electric.
He graduated from North Liberty High School. Charles served his country in the United States
Army during the Korean Conflict from March 30, 1953 to Feb. 3, 1955. He was a former member
of the American Legion and V.F.W.
He is survived by his wife, Betty L. O’Connor of Rochester; three sons: Charles Ray O’Connor
of Gillette, Wyo., Kenneth (Monica) Wells of Costa Rica and Randy Zehner of Pittsburg, Pa.;
nine daughters: Debra O’Connor of Angola, Patricia Chee of Albuquerque, N.M., Pauline King of
Coolidge, Ariz., Diane (William) King of Knox, Barbara (Richard) Carstens of Helensville, Wis.,
Judy Hovenden of Mentone, Cindy Sumey of Rochester, Louise (Melvin) Lairson of Hillsboro,
Texas and Windy Lauderback of Rochester; 24 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and
three brothers: Howard (Betty) O’Connor of Bremen, John (Judy) O’Connor of South Bend and
Merlyn (Donna) O’Connor of Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Georgegene O’Connor; second wife, Mildred
M. O’Connor; two sons: Paul Dale O’Connor and Russell Wells Jr.; great-granddaughter, Marie
Carstens; five brothers; and two sisters.
Friends may visit with the family Friday, Feb. 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Earl-Grossman
Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 at the
funeral home with Chaplin Jason See of Woodlawn Hospital officiating.
Burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery, Argos.

Chloe Rowe
Chloe Rowe, 85, a resident of Mason Health Care Facility and formerly of Tippecanoe, died
Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009 at 1:30 a.m.
She is survived by her four sons: William Franklin and wife Irene Hartbarger of Mishawaka,
Curtis Hartbarger of Tippecanoe, Kernie and wife Karen Rowe of North Manchester and James
and wife Brenda Rowe of Columbia City; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and sister,
Marjorie Bennett of Syracuse.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 in the Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S.
Main St. Bourbon. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 in the funeral home. Burial will
follow in the Tippecanoe cemetery.
Eula Mae Stone
BREMEN — Eula Mae Stone, 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009 in Saint Joseph Regional Medical
Center, Plymouth.
Survivors include daughters: Rosemary Singleton of Maryland and Malinda (Junior) Hill of
Bremen; son, Leonard Stone of Leiters Ford; brother, Bobby Shemwell of Central City, Ky.;
sisters: Claudene Stone of Grovertown, Joetta Richards of Powderly, Ky., Dorothy Piper of
Kerrville, Texas and Shelby (Ralph) Puckett of Culver; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 7 at noon (Central Time) at Rannells Funeral Home,
Hamlet Chapel. Burial will be in the Burr Oak cemetery. Visitation is Friday, Feb. 6 from 4 to 8
p.m. CST and Saturday one hour prior to the service.
Roy Edwin Swanson
ARGOS — Roy Edwin Swanson, 91, passed away at Miller's Merry Manor in Culver Tuesday,
Feb. 3, 2009. He resided at 10933 West 17th Rd., Argos, with his wife Dorothy Swanson, who survives.
On March 5, 1917, Roy was born to David and Lydia Swanson of Grovertown. He was a 1936
graduate of Grovertown High School and a 1940 graduate of Purdue University, where he
majored in Poultry and Agriculture.
In August of 1940, Roy married
his high school sweetheart, Emily Waclaw, who preceded him in
death in 1979. They came to Marshall County and resided at 5319 Plymouth-LaPorte Trail,
Plymouth, to start farming and to build a poultry hatching business, which eventually became
one of the largest poultry operations, in Indiana. Roy worked hard developing his farm and
raising and hatching chickens, until 1967, when he began to transform his farmland into a golf
course. This eventually became Swan Lake Golf Club and United States Golf Academy, which
the Swanson family owned and operated until the business was sold, in 2000.
Roy had a keen interest in construction and enjoyed building. He built several homes, including
his own, as well as chicken coops, hatcheries, and all the original buildings for the golf course
and the academy. He was instrumental in building the Sunday school wing of the former EUB
Church, of which he was a member. He also built the education wing of Grace Baptist Church
and went on several mission trips, to Honduras, doing construction work there.
Roy was an avid traveler. His travels took him to all 50 states, in the United States, and all the
way around the globe. In 1962, he went on an agricultural tour with Purdue University to Russia,
Poland, and several European countries. Some later journeys included trips to the Panama
Canal, several Central and South American countries, Israel, Egypt, China, New Zealand, Spain,
and his parents’ homeland of Sweden.
After the death of his first wife, Emily, Roy married
Dorothy Ferguson, of Argos, in 1980. 2009
marks their 29th wedding anniversary.
Roy was an active, dedicated member of Grace Baptist Church for several years. He was a long
time Gideon, passing out New Testaments to school children across the state of Indiana. He had
a real concern for mission work and spreading the gospel.
Surviving Roy is his loving wife, Dorothy Swanson of Argos; his brother, Norman Swanson of
Grovertown; his daughter, Lynette Kross of Plymouth; his daughter, Felicia (Mark) Batman of
Plymouth, and their children Luke, Emily, and Matthew; Roy's daughter-in-law, Linda Swanson of
Tennessee; his grandson, David (Yoonhae) Swanson and their sons, Noah and Zachary of
Fishers, Indiana; his granddaughter, Melinda (James) Krass and their sons, Aiden, Elliot, and
Rowan of Nappanee; his stepsons: John (Elaine) Ferguson of Argos and their sons, Eric and
Gregg; Jerry (Karen) Ferguson of Wisconsin and their daughter, Jean; and Jim (Rhonda)
Ferguson of Argos and their son, Seth.
Roy was preceded in death by his son, Roger Swanson in 2003.
A time of visiting with the family will be Friday, Feb. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the VAN GILDER
FUNERAL HOME, Plymouth.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME,
300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563, with the Rev. John Branch officiating.
Burial will be in the Swedish cemetery, Donaldson.
