Susan Mary (Murphy) Chard, Pine Village
Susan Mary (Murphy) Chard, 100, of Pine Village, died in the Country Care Nursing Center, Williamsport, on Monday, December 15, 2003, at 10:00 p.m.
Susan was born in Cooma, New South Wales, Australia, on December 14, 1903. She was the daughter of Martin and Susan Mary Corey Murphy. She has lived for thirty years in Brisbane, Australia, moving to the United States and residing in Pine Village since 1966. She has resided in the Oxford Healthcare Center for five years, prior to moving to Country Care two months ago.
Susan was schooled in Brisbane. After moving to the United States, he provided baby sitting services for local families in the Pine Village area.
Susan was a member of the Pine Village Christian Church. She
enjoyed yard work and gardening.
Susan was married to Thomas H. Chard in Australia. He preceded her in death.
Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy M. Polf, Pine Village; three grandchildren, Sharon (husband-Ed) Huber, Pine Village; Tom (wife-Shelly) Polf, Attica; and Terri (husband-Dale) Pelsy, Francesville; six great granddaughters, a great grandson; three great great grandsons, and a great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil and John Murphy along with an infant sister.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Friday, December 19th, from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Don Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Village Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are preferred to the Warren County Community Foundation, Reading & Writing Fund for Elementary of Warren County.
Verna D. Martin, West Point
Verna D. (Long) Martin, 93, of 4504 S. County Line Rd. W., West Point, died at 2:34 a.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette.
Verna was born in Williamsport, IN on December 15, 1909, the daughter of Claude and Isa (Sales) Long. She had lived in the West Point community since 1938.
Verna was a member of the West Point Methodist Church. She enjoyed antique collecting and selling out of her home.
Verna married Robert L. Martin on August 9, 1924 in Williamsport. He preceded her in death on March 4, 1968.
Survivors include five sons, James W. Martin, Robert A. “Bob” (companion-Jeannette) Martin, Claude B. “Bud” (companion-Norma) Martin, all of West Point, Harry C. “Cliff” (wife-Brenda) Martin and Russel D. “Donnie” Martin, both of Attica, daughter-in-law, Patricia Martin of Independence, 21 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, 43 great great grandchildren and two great great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth L. Martin, and two daughters, Evelyn M. Eaglehoff and Carol I. White, a sister, Ione Linn, three brothers, Paul, Joe and Harry Long, and a grandson, Eddie Martin.
Gravesite Services will be held at West Point Cemetery, West Point on Thursday, December 18 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. G. Scott Pattison officiating. Memorial Contributions may be made to the West Point Volunteer Fire Department or the West Point Methodist Church.
Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Knowles, Attica
Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Knowles, 73, formerly of 307 N. Franklin St., Danville, Illinois, and had been residing at the St. Mary’s Healthcare Center, Lafayette, died at St. Mary’s on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at 11:05 a.m.
Betty was born in Attica, Indiana, on March 25, 1931. She was the daughter of William and Esther E. Olsen Knowles. She lived many years in Attica, attending Attica and Independence Schools. She has lived in Danville since 1957 and moved to St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Lafayette in February of 2004.
Betty was a housekeeper for local families in Danville.
Surviving are a sister, Vera Burk, Lafayette; three brothers, Marvin L. Knowles, Gary, IN; Russell (wife-Jo) Knowles, Delphi; Larry (wife-Paula) Knowles, Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Anna Marie Kirts, Eleanor Louise Hall, Mary Ellen Simons and Sara Jane Mitton; three brothers, Glen Knowles, William C. Knowles and Jackie L. Knowles.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Thursday, June 10th, from 1:00 p.m. until service time at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Clayton Kendall officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Attica.

Wilma Dean (Crawford) Hartman Haas, Attica
Wilma Dean (Crawford) Hartman, Haas, 82, 202 West St., Attica, died on Saturday, June 5, 2004, at 11:00 p.m. in the Williamsport Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Wilma was born in Pence, Indiana, on March 11, 1922. She was the daughter of Lawrence J. and Estella Cronkhite Crawford. She lived most of her life in Attica.
Wilma had worked as a cook for the Attica Café in Attica. She also had worked for Radio Material Corp. in Attica . In 1973 Wilma began working for ALCOA in Lafayette until 1993. In 1993 she worked for Walmart in Lafayette until her retirement ion 2001.
She was a member of the Attica First United Methodist Church. Wilma was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. Post # 3318 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Lodge # 2596, both of Attica. She was an avid basketball fan with the Indiana Pacers as her favorite team. She was also responsible for donating flagpoles to the McDonald Park and the Moose Lodge, both in Attica.
She was first married to Glenn Hartman. She later married Donald Haas and he preceded her in death in 1968.
Surviving are two daughters, Cecelia C. Hartman, Attica; Murial A. “Toni” Boss, Yonkers, NY; a grandson, William Boss; two great grandchildren, Gillian and William Boss, all of New Milford, CT. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Wednesday, June 9th, from 11:00 a.m. until the V.F.W. Memorial service at 1:45 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Thomas Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Attica.
Keith Aaron Smith
Newtown - Keith Aaron Smith, 40, Newtown, died as a result of a motorcycle accident on Sunday, August 1, 2004 at 4:45 a.m., south of Hillsboro.
Keith was born in Danville, Illinois, on January 22, 1964. He was the son of Louis Edwin and Lucy Bell Keller Smith. He was raised in the Newtown community and graduated from Fountain Central High School in 1982.
Keith was presently working as a truck driver and mechanic for the UAP Richter Fertilizer Company in Stone Bluff.
Mr. Smith formerly attended the Hopewell Baptist Church in Newtown. He was active in tracing his genealogy. Keith was an avid gun collector and member of the National Rifle Association.
Surviving are two brothers, Eric J. (wife-Dilia) Smith, Brazil, IN; Edwin D. (wife-Wilma) Smith, Dyersburg, TN; a sister, Gwen (husband- David) Solomon, Veedersburg; several nieces and nephews and a great niece and two great nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Smith along with his parents.
Memorial gravesite services will be held in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery
on Tuesday, August 10th, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Don Perry officiating.
Dick A. Johnson, Williamsport
Dick Albert Johnson, 77, of 409 Grant St., Williamsport, died at his residence at 2:45 a.m. on Friday, October 8, 2004.
Dick was born in Warren County on August 4, 1927, the son of Harry and Rilla (McNett) Johnson. He had lived all of his life in Williamsport and had attended Williamsport High School. For 13 years, he and his wife had wintered in Sebring, FL.
Dick was a member of the U.S. Army during WWII, serving in the Panama Canal. He owned and operated the Standard Oil Service Station by the twin bridges of Williamsport for over 35 years. He was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post #259 of Williamsport and a member of the Pine Village Masonic Lodge #315 F&AM. For many years he was a volunteer fireman for the town of Williamsport. He enjoyed watching the Cubs. He liked to fish, hunt and look for mushrooms.
Dick married Etta Mae Morgan on September 30, 1949 in Williamsport. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Gary Johnson and Dave (wife-Lisa) Johnson, both of Williamsport; a sister, Marie (husband-Everett) Agan of Indianapolis; and a grandson and fishing buddy, Trevor Johnson of Williamsport. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Robert Johnson, and two sisters, Bernice Law and Edith Slinker.
Services will be held at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Sunday, October 10, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Charles Anderson officiating. Burial will be held in Highland Cemetery, Williamsport. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Mary Agnes Spear, Newtown
Mary Agnes (Clark) Spear, 91, of 304 W. Main St., Newtown, died at 11:42 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at the St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital, Williamsport.
Mary was born in Dubre, KY on November 24, 1913, the daughter of James Rueben and Cora Reed (Murray) Clark. She was raised in Kentucky, living in Marrowbone and Louisville.
Mary married Rumzie Ervin Spear in Covington, IN in 1935. They lived in Newtown all of their married life. He preceded her in death on May 25, 1956.
Mary and her husband did custom straw bailing in the Newtown area and later worked for Radio Materials Corporation in Attica for several years. She was involved in the nondenominational faith of “Professing in the Truth.” She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and liked to cook.
Survivors include 4 sons, William Victor (wife-Sandy) Spear, Veedersburg; James Arthur (wife-Judy) Spear of Covington; Herman (wife-Ethel) Spear, Muncie, IN; Paul Thurman (wife-Linda) Spear, Newtown; a daughter, Mary Margaret (husband-Steve) Lucas of Newtown, with whom she lived with and made her home for over 29 years; a sister, Ora (husband-Jim) Arnold, Malvern, Arkansas; 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, four sons, one being Rumzie Earl Spear; a grandson, four sisters and three brothers.
Services will be held at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Saturday, December 4, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held in Newtown Cemetery, Newtown. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
