Bernice M. Hummel
BREMEN -- Bernice M. Hummel, 90, of Bremen, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010 at the
Bremen Health Care Center.
She was born Oct. 25, 1920 in Bremen to Arthur C. and Ruth (Carbiener) Johnson. April 4, 1940
she married
Dale Hummel. He preceded her in death. Bernice graduated from Madison School
in 1938 and was a member of Bremen United Methodist Church. She was a wonderful mother,
housewife and a compassionate and generous friend to all who knew her.
Survivors include sons, Gerald “Jerry” (Betty) Hummel of Lake of the Woods, Bremen, Dennis
(Debbie Stull) Hummel of North Liberty, and Alan Hummel of Bremen; grandsons: Gary Hummel
of Bremen, Tim Kulczar of Bremen, and Matthew (Jennifer) Hummel of North Liberty; great grandsons,
Chad Hummel and Christopher Kulczar; great-granddaughters: Wendy (Brian)
McLaughlin, Cloey Hummel, and Brittany Hummel; great-great-grandchildren, Braden and Keely
McLaughlin; several step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren;
sisters, June Bole of Bremen, and Marie (Norman) Bollenbacher; and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dale; infant son, Stanley; and granddaughter, Lori Kulczar.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at the Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen
and will be officiated by Pastor Kevin Miller and Pastor Tom Padburg.
Burial will follow at the Bremen cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Center for Hospice Care or to the Bremen United
Methodist Church.
Marjorie L. Van Vactor
PLYMOUTH -- Marjorie (Mudge) Van Vactor, 79, a lifelong resident of Plymouth, passed away
surrounded by her family at 6:58 p.m., Oct. 31, 2010, at Pilgrim Manor, after an extended illness.
Mudge was born Oct. 21, 1931 in Plymouth to F. John and Ada L. (Goss) Hutchings. She
graduated from Plymouth High School and June 12, 1949, she married
Harold S. Van Vactor.
They were married
60 years and shared their life together farming and building their trucking
company before Harold’s death Sept. 9, 2009.
Mudge was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for more
than 50 years. Tyra Constance Guild was also a special group in the church where her love and
presence could be felt with her gift of special pies, cookies and rolls for any event whenever the
need arose.
Mudge loved to sing and was a member of the Marshall County Chorus for many years. She
always cherished her time in the Chorus, performing at community events and traveling to
Purdue University for statewide workshops.
Mudge is survived by her sons, David R. (Chris) Van Vactor and Stephen J. (Maria) Van Vactor;
daughters, Barbara V. (David) Miller and Patricia L. (Edward) Wright; brothers, John (Grace)
Hutchings of Enid, Okla. And Jim Hutchings of Indianapolis; sisters: Liz Smith of Orland Park, Ill.
And Phyllis Kelsey, Ada Petill, Helen (Larry) Beedy, Susie Newman and Toni Hutchings, all of
Plymouth.
Mudge is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 40 nieces and nephews and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold S. Van Vactor; daughter, Judy;
and son, Gary; sister, Mary Jane Pulliam; and brother, Bob Hutchings.
She’s the one we knew forever, the one we went to for honest advice and genuine support. The
one who accepted our quirky little habits and understood us in a way few others could.
She’s the one we could call at any hour -- to laugh or cry or complain. … The one whose voice
was there all along, sharing secrets and dreams and singing our song when we needed to hear it
most.
She’s the one who could read our mind, hear our heart, and love us just the way we were. She
was our sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3 in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home,
1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4 in the First United Methodist Church, 400 N.
Michigan St., Plymouth, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Matthew Pickut will
officiate.
Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the First United Methodist
Church Choir, 400 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, the Plymouth Fireman’s Memorial Scholarship

Richard M. Irwin
HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Richard M. Irwin, 65, died Nov. 1, 2010 at Straub Hospital in Honolulu.
He is survived by his wife, Joye of Kalaheo; daughter, Lisa (Kenneth) Ardanowski of Plano,
Texas; son, Scott Irwin of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; parents Harold and Jeanette McBride Irwin; sister,
Nancy Irwin; Ill.; brother-in-law Robert (Cathy) Westman of Woodstock, Ill.; nephews and many
cousins.
Visitation will take place from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010 at the Lihue United Church.
Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. at the church.
Burial will follow at the Kauai Veterans cemetery in Hanapepe.

Susan Kay Wickens
INDIANAPOLIS -- Susan Kay Wickens, loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister,
aunt, and friend to many, passed away, Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at Methodist Hospital, in
Indianapolis.
Sue was born April 10, 1954, to Richard G. Listenberger and Beverly (Bowles) Serf-Buchert. She
had been a Plymouth resident all of her life. Sue graduated from Plymouth High School in the
Class of 1972. She received her bachelor’s degree from IUSB in 1976.
On Feb. 10, 1973, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Plymouth, Sue married
her high school
sweetheart, Keith S. Wickens. They had a happy and loving relationship for 37 years. To their
marriage, four beautiful children were born: Melissa Kay, Kristin Lynn, Kyle Alan, and Elizabeth
Renee.
Sue was a dedicated employee of Arrow Pest Control, celebrating 30 years of service in
February of this year. She was a part-time employee of Red D Mart, and was the bookkeeper for
King Gyro’s Restaurant. She had been an ambitious hard worker all of her life. In more recent
years, exercise had become a serious part of her busy schedule. She had lost a tremendous
amount of weight, leaving her in the best physical condition of her life. She was a very active
member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving as their treasurer for 13 years. She also
volunteered many hours for the Plymouth Community Swim Club, of which all four of her children
were members. The Plymouth Sharks Swimming Team, was a big part of their family’s lives. Her
husband Keith was a referee and Sue was the team’s secretary for 10 years. She attended every
practice and every swim meet.
Sue is survived by her husband, Keith Wickens; their daughters: Melissa Kay Wickens of
Cleveland, Ohio, Kristin Lynn Wickens (fiancé Eric Quintana) and their daughter Madelynn
Grace Quintana of Indianapolis, and Elizabeth Renee Wickens at home; their son, Kyle Alan
Wickens of Indianapolis; her mother and stepfather, Beverly Serf-Buchert and Earl Buchert; her
sisters, Dr. Lynn (Neil) Bemenderfer and their children Joan, Tom, and Ted, of Indianapolis, Ann
(Kent) Janes and their children Zach, Matt, and Kate, of Springfield, Ill., and Gina Serf of
Indianapolis; her brother, Brad Alan (Patty) Serf and their children Tom and Will of Plymouth.
She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Listenberger; her devoted stepfather, Frank
Serf; her loving grandparents, Tom and Adeline Bowles; her father and mother-in-law, John and
Dorothy Wickens; and her uncle, Henry “J. R.” Spier.
Sue, one more time, gave of herself. She donated her organs to help save and better the lives of
others.

Guadalupe “Lupe” Duenez
PLYMOUTH -- Guadalupe “Lupe” Duenez, 67, Plymouth, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at
Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
She is survived by her mother, Eudelia G. “Lela” Duenez of Plymouth; sister, Delores (Eddie)
Phillips of Kokomo; and brothers, Jose L. Duenez of Plymouth and John (Susan) Duenez of
Indianapolis.
Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 at Johnson-Danielson Funeral
Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at New Oakhill cemetery.
Larry Lee Good
ROCHESTER -- Larry Lee Good, 70, of Rochester, died at 12:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 2 at
Woodlawn Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Angelina (Doug) Anderson of Rochester; son, Mike
(Julie) Good of Plymouth; sisters: Pauline Stevenson of Monticello, Marlene (Ed) Kelly of Naples,
Fla., Joyce (Bill) Black of Logansport, and Janet Shambarger of Fulton; brother, Loyal “Junior”
(Maryanne) Good of West Lafayette; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W.
18th St. Rochester.
Funeral services will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Fulton County Relay for Life.
Bryan Andrew Mills
HAMLET -- Bryan Andrew Mills, 32, of Hamlet, died Nov. 2 suddenly following an automobile crash.
He was born July 10, 1978.
He is survived by a daughter, Samantha Ann Mills; his mother, Linda (Mechei) Mills of Gary; his
father, John (Anna) Mills of Whiting; brothers: John II (Lori) Mills of Evansville, Pete Shaffer of
Chesterton, Joe (Lori) Shaffer of Whiting and Danny (Elisa) Spremo of Whiting; and sisters:
Sheila (Mike) Smith of Tyner; Rose (Jerry) Clemons of Crown Point and Eva Litzinger of
Oakland, Calif.; and his maternal grandmother, Anita Mechei of Gary. He is also survived by
nieces Mallory Miller, Jessica Clemons and Morgan Grankowski and nephews Michael Smith III,
John Mills III, Dalton Miller, Jerry Clemons, Chris Grankowski and Gordon Litzinger.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Angela; his maternal grandfather Phillip Mechei; paternal
grandparents Greg and Mary Ann Mills and a nephew, Michael Johnson.
Bryan graduated from John Glenn High School in 1998 and was an employee of Swan Lake Golf
Academy. He was a proud member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of
America Local #413.
Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until time of
services at Owens-Ruzich Funeral Home, 816 119th St. (corner of Calumet Avenue - Rt. 41 and
119th Street), Whiting.
Services are Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Randy Bergsma officiating.
Burial will be at Ridgelawn cemetery, Gary.

Raymond L. Brorggren
GROVERTOWN -- Raymond L. Borggren, 86, died at 3:05 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010 in
our Lady of Peace Hospital, Mishawaka.
He was the son of August (Gus) and Selma Marie Mattern Borggren.
A graduate of Grovertown High School with the 11-member class of 1942, he played coronet in
the high school band.
He worked with his dad on the farm until, deferred once, he was called up to serve his country in
World War II. After training at Camp Wolters, Texas, and Fort Meade, Md., the young man was
loaded onto a troop train headed to Boston. The men, members of the 333rd Regiment of the
84th Infantry Division -- called Railsplitters -- went aboard the Thomas H. Berry, a British
transport anchored in Boston Harbor.
Mostly what Ray remembered about the trip over was how seasick he was, all the way. He had
some interesting assignments. One was serving at the British camp in Amsterdam.
Tech. Sgt. Ray Borggren was discharged at Camp Atterbury June 14, 1946. Among his
decorations were the Bronze Star and three major campaign ribbons.
Ray met Glenna Shafer, a Plymouth High School graduate in 1946 when he came to look at a
new car where she worked at Gates Chevrolet in Plymouth. They were married
June 14, 1952.
He is survived by Glenna, his devoted wife of 58 years; their children: Terry and Tammy
Borggren, son and daughter-in-law, Plymouth, Kent and Sherri Borggren, son and daughter-inlaw,
also of Plymouth, Marsha and Jeff Welborn, and daughter and son-in-law, Bremen; their
grandchildren: Greg Welborn, Shannon Welborn, Jeremy Borggren, Erica Borggren, Tylor
Borggren, Heather Borggren and Tina Gratt; great-grandchildren: Paisley Welborn and Vivian
Gratt; his sister, Helen Virginia Worman, Grovertown; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Borggren; and a
cousin, Elaine Hansen.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, August and Selma Marie Borggren; three triplet
brothers: William (Bill), Stewart and Roland Borggren. Also deceased is Selma Borggren, his
stepmother.
Ray worked in the insurance business for more than 30 years, primarily with Farm Bureau
Insurance. He retired in 1990.
He served 10 years as a Marshall County Commissioner, retiring in 1997, was on the Plymouth
Community School Board from 1971 to 1974, and was a Republican Precinct committeeman for
more years than he could count.
He served on the Marshall County Drainage Board, also the Starke/Pulaski County Drainage
Board. He was a member of the Lions Club for more than 50 years, holding every office in the
local club with the exception of treasurer, and recently was the recipient of the Melvin Jones
Fellow Award.
Ray enjoyed being with his grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed working outside
and fishing with his family in Minnesota. A lifetime member of the VFW and the American
Legion, he was also very active in the Evangelical Covenant Church, Donaldson, where he
served in many different capacities.
Ray was proud to be a veteran and loved his country very much. He never missed the
opportunity to vote and voice his political opinion.
Visitation with the family and sharing of memories will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, and
one hour prior to the funeral services Monday, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N.
Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8 in the funeral home. The Rev. Denise
Anderson, pastor of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Donaldson, will officiate.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the Plymouth American Legion, VFW and
disabled American veterans in the New Oakhill cemetery.
Memorial gifts in Ray’s memory may be given to the Evangelical Covenant Church, Donaldson.
