Phyllis J. Strang
NAPPANEE -- Phyllis J. Strang, 83, of Nappanee, died Saturday, May 1, 2010 at her residence.
She is survived by sons: Jackie “Jack” (Gloria) Hamman of Leesburg, Daryl “Butch” (Jolene)
Hamman of Nappanee, and Larry Hamman of Etna Green; stepdaughters, Sandra Butte of
Edwardsburg, Mich. and Mary Ann (Claude) Robinson of Claypool; a stepson, Edward Strang of
Pierceton; a grandson; nine step grandchildren; 11 great-step grandchildren; and a brother, Guy
Church of Brethren, Mich.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 6 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder
Funeral Home, 950 N. Main St., Nappanee.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, May 7 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at
Hepton Union cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Turkey Creek Church of
the Brethren or the United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
William Milnre Waddell
FRANKFORT -- William Milner Waddell, 88, of Frankfort, died at 9:08 a.m. Saturday, May 01,
2010 at Wesley Manor Retirement Community, following a prolonged illness.
He was born April 13, 1922 in Warren Township in Clinton County, Ind. to W. Waldo and Mary
L. (Milner) Waddell.
He married
Jane Young Oct. 22, 1947 in Muncie, Ind. and she preceded him in death Jan. 11, 1998.
Mr. Waddell attended Beard Eleme-ntary, Rossville High School, and was a 1940 graduate of
Frankfort High School. He was a 1947 Ball State graduate and received his M.S. from Butler in 1951.
He also attended classes at Western Michigan, Columbia, Michigan State, Western Illinois,
Indiana University, Purdue University, George Washington University of St. Louis and University
of Singapore. A lifelong Clinton County resident, he taught high school social studies at the
Community Schools of Frankfort for 40 years, retiring in 1987.
A veteran of WWII serving in the Navy, he attained the rank of Lt. Commander and was
Commanding Officer of the USS LC (FF) 656, serving from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater.
He also retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve.
His memberships include: First Evangelical Presbyterian Church where he was lifetime member
and past deacon, the American Legion, lifetime member of NEA, member of Indiana Classroom
Teachers, and Frankfort Classroom Teachers where he was president for two years. He was
past member of the Elks, Moose, Frankfort Country Club and served as City Councilman for 36
years.
He is survived by daughters, Mrs. Larry (Kris) Gordon of Plymouth and Karen Paxson of
Greenwood, Ind.; a son, William Y. “Chip” (Letty) Waddell of Concord, N.C.; a sister, Virginia
Isley of Crown Point, Ind.; nine grandchildren: Kim (Doug) Snyder, Darci (John) Hampton, Mitch
(Matt) Chamberlin and Matt Gordon; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; brother, Howard; and sister, Pat McCreary.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 6 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 200 S. Main St., Frankfort.
Tom Jameson will officiate.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 5 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Green
Lawn Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the First Evangelical Presbyterian
Church, 352 W. Clinton St., Frankfort. Envelopes will be available.
Jane A. Wakeland
CULVER -- Jane A. Wakeland, 59, of Culver, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Memorial
Hospital in South Bend after a 10-year battle with Multiple Myeloma.
Jane was born July 8, 1950 in Lafayette, to Arthur and Marsella Smith.
She was married
June 6, 1971 to Bruce Wakeland. He survives.
Jane was a graduate of Purdue University. She obtained a B.S. in Library Science as well as her
master’s degree.
She was the technology coordinator of the Culver Community School District where she was
employed for 33 years. She was also a director of the Hoosier Educational Computer
Coordinators (HECC).
Jane is survived by her husband of 39 years, Bruce Wakeland; mother, Marsella Smith; sister,
Kay (Vince) Schrader; sister-in-law, Elaine (Joseph Zosky) Wakeland; brothers-in-law, Neal
(Keri) and Daniel (Janet) Wakeland; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and
grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Smith.
A time of sharing memories with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT Tuesday, May 4 at
the Odom Funeral Home, Culver, with a memorial service at 7 p.m.

Beverly Dean Wenino
PLYMOUTH -- Beverly Dean Wenino, 88, a resident of Carriage Drive, Plymouth, died in the
Catherine Kasper Life Center, Donaldson, at 8:05 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010 after battling
cancer.
Beverly was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Rensselaer, the daughter of John R. and Madelene C.
(Sayler) Lintner. There she graduated from high school with the class of 1939.
Nov. 6, 1949, in Monticello, Beverly married
Robert H. Wenino; he preceded her in death July 23
of last year.
She was a homemaker and shared her penmanship with the Stanley family while working for the
Memorial Record Company. She enjoyed watercolor art, having taken classes at Ancilla, and
also listening to Big Band-era music. With her family she loved summer trips into the Michigan
Upper Peninsula.
She had been a Blue Bird leader and was a member of the Plymouth Ladies of the Moose and
had served as Senior Regent.
Beverly is survived by her son, Robert Michael “Mike” Wenino of Plymouth and two daughters,
Fredericka A. “Ricki” and husband James E. McFarlin of Ligonier, and Sherry Lynn Moore,
Taylorsville, N.C.
Four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive along with five brothers and four sisters.
Her brothers are: John (Francine) Lintner of Frankfort, Daryl (Marjie) Lintner, Larry (Betty)
Lintner, Ronald (Betty) Lintner and Michael (Marcella) Lintner, all of Rensselaer. Sisters include:
Shirley Martinbianco of Burton, Mich., Lillian Anderson of Rensselaer, Sandra Schauer of Duluth,
Minn., and Claudia (Carmon) Witherington of Rensselaer.
Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse, and two grandbabies.
Visitation will be from 11 to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 4 at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home,
1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services will follow visitation at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
The Rev. Father William Kummer, pastor of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Gloria Barko
KOONTZ LAKE -- Gloria Barko, 81, died May 2, 2010 at Porter Hospital, Valparaiso Campus.
She is survived by her husband Charles; children: Lisa (Tom) Mencke, Jack (Gretchen) Barko,
Lori Barko and Bob Barko; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. (CT) Thursday, May 6 and from 10 to 10:30 p.m. Friday
at Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, Walkerton. Burial will take
place at Woodlawn cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Deborah Moerman

Harold Devon "Hack" O'Connor
NORTH LIBERTY -- Harold Devon “Hack” O’Connor, a lifelong resident of North Liberty, passed
away at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, May 2, 2010 in his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 79
years old.
He was born Aug. 21, 1930 in North Liberty, a son of Zell and Helen (Finch) O’Connor, and
remained a lifelong resident.
Harold worked for many years as a meat cutter-butcher for Wilcox’s Supermarket, and taught
many people how to cut meat throughout the years. He retired from John Glenn School Corp.,
where he worked as a custodian at North Liberty Elemen-tary School.
Jan. 12, 1952 in South Bend, Harold was united in marriage to Georgia Elaine Eichorst. They
enjoyed 53 years of marriage until her passing Sept. 21, 2005.
He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Connie Sue O’Connor Oct. 18, 1953, and
Deborah Clark, Sept. 17, 1994, along with a sister, Enid Beaudoin, and four brothers: Lawrence,
Lester, Donald, and William O’Connor.
Harold is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Dennis) Dolph of Walkerton; three sons: Ronald
(Carol) O’Connor of Las Cruces, N.M., Jack (Linda) O’Connor of North Liberty, and Larry (Linda)
O’Connor of Sharon Spirit, Kan.; and eight grandchildren: Ryan O’Connor, Heather Wills, Karyl
(Gonzalo) Ruiz, Jeffrey Clark, Lindsay (Scott) Namestnik, Jonathon Dolph, Kyle O’Connor, and
Tyler O’Connor. In addition, four sisters: Doris (Dennis) Groves, Dorothy Arnett, and Norma
Solmos, all of North Liberty, and Judy (Michael) Granning of Fort Wayne; and a brother, Dale
“Verland” O’Connor of South Bend, all survive him as well.
Harold proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a 50-year member of the
American Legion Post 365, in North Liberty. He was an avid fisherman, and always enjoyed
having family and friends at his home for a fish fry.
He was a lifelong Cub’s fan, and enjoyed bowling for many years. He loved watching “The Price
is Right, ” “Wheel of Fortune, ” and “Jeopardy.”
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Lakeville, 314 S.
Michigan Street, Lakeville. Rev. Vicky Blough, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, will officiate.
Graveside services with military honors will follow at Westlawn cemetery, North Liberty. The
family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and one hour prior to services Wednesday
at the Palmer Funeral Home-Lakeville.

Thomas J., Jr. Bell
WALKERTON -- Thomas J. Bell, Jr., 54, of Walkerton, died at 10:23 a.m. Monday, May 3, 2010
in Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton.
He is survived by his father, Thomas J. Bell Sr., of South Bend; a daughter, Cori (Tim) Valenti of
Kendallville; three grandchildren; two sisters, Frances “Tancy” (Ron) Pierce of Niles, Mich.; Tina
(David) Donica of South Bend; one brother, Tyrus (Shelley) Bell of South Bend; and several
nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 23 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545
N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where friends and family may gather one hour prior to the service.

Iris Y. Jones
WALKERTON -- Iris Y. Jones, 88, passed away Monday, May 3, 2010 in Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
Mrs. Jones was born Dec. 9, 1921 in Gas City, Ind. to Martin and Ethel (McDaniel) Mellin and
lived in the area most of her life. Dec. 12, 1946 in Walkerton she was married
to Paul A. Jones
who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two brothers.
Survivors include two daughters, Paula (Gordon) Moore of Rolling Prairie and Valerie (Henry)
Paschen of Walkerton; four grandchildren: Troy Bell of North Liberty, Christine Paschen of Ft.
Wayne, Julie Guthrie of Mishawaka and Cheryl Paschen of Walkerton; two step-grandchildren,
Bryan Moore of Rolling Prairie and Jeremy Moore of Indianapolis and seven great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Walkerton, a 50-year member of Order of
Eastern Star, Walkerton, the Walkerton Business & Professional Women’s Club and the
Walkerton American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. (Eastern Time) Saturday, May 8 at Rannells Funeral Home,
Koontz Lake Chapel.
Burial will be at the Woodlawn cemetery, Walkerton.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. (ET) Friday and after 10 a.m. until the time of services
Saturday at the funeral home.
George E. Arthur
PLYMOUTH -- George E. Arthur, 70, of Plymouth, died at 5:57 p.m., Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.
He is survived by his brothers, Arthur J. and Sandi Arthur of Las Vegas, Nev. and Jay and the
late Linda Arthur of Valparaiso; and his sister, Robyn and Ron Mitchell of Sebring, Fla.
There will be no visitation or services at this time.
