MISHAWAKA -- Tonia Tombaugh, 78, of Mishawaka died Friday, Sept. 2, 2011 at Memorial
Hospital in South Bend.
She is survived by a sister, Bonnie (David) Juenker of Burlington, Vt.; and a half brother, Terry
Tombaugh of Albuquerque, N.M.
There will be a memorial service at a later date.
The Mishler Funeral Home in Bremen is assisting the family with arrangements.
Helen I. Vance
NOBLESVILLE -- Helen I. Vance, 95, residing in Noblesville, formerly of Bremen, died at 8 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 2, 2011 at the Harbor Manor, Noblesville.
She is survived by her husband, William P. 'Bill' Vance; daughter, Sharon K. Vance of Glendale
Heights, Ill.; sons, Warren P. (Cindy) Vance of Goshen, and Wayne P. (Debbie) Vance of
Westfield; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 at the Lakeville United
Methodist Church, 610 N. Michigan St., Lakeville. Graveside services will follow at Bremen
cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lakeville United Methodist Church and
also one hour prior to services Wednesday. Palmer Funeral Home-Lakeville is assisting with
funeral arrangements.
Contributions in memory of Helen I. Vance may be donated to the Lakeville United Methodist

BREMEN -- Floyd Samuel Bender, 74, 5117 Beech Road, Bremen, died Saturday, Sept. 3, at
5:08 a.m. at St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, where he had been a patient since Friday.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae; daughters, Sharon (Steve) Yoder, Nappanee, Sara Jean
Bender, at home, Barbara (Devon) Miller, Nappanee, Laura Bender, at home, Susan (Atlee)
Yutzy, Nappanee; sons, Mark (Nancy) Bender, Nappanee, Lavern (Rosanna) Bender, Bremen,
and Merle (Vonda) Bender, Nappanee; 37 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Edward
(Marth) Bender, New Paris; sisters, Dorothy Borkholder, Nappanee, Christina (Melvin) Mullet,
Sugar Creek, Ohio, Marie (Mahlon) Hostetler, Nappanee, Barbara (Orla) Troyer, Carbondale, Ill.,
and Esther Bender, Nappanee.
Visitation was at the family residence after 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, and all day Monday. The
funeral service was Tuesday, at 9:30 a.m. at Harley Miller’s residence (1486 E. 5th Road,
Bremen). Burial will be at Cedar Road Amish cemetery.
Teddy J. Martindale
NAPPANEE -- Teddy 'Ted' J. Martindale, 65, of 252 N. Locke St., Nappanee, died Saturday
night at his residence after a two-year illness.
Surviving are his wife, Diana; daughters, Amy Martindale, Myra (Robert) Meredith; son, Jerrad
(Vera) Martindale, all of Nappanee; five grandchildren; brothers, William C. (Mabel) Martindale,
Gladwin, Mich., and Larry J. (Patricia) Martindale, Syracuse.
Visitation is Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m. at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home,
Nappanee. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to service,
at the First Brethren Church in Nappanee. Burial will be in South Union cemetery.

Ronald Lee Bailey
ROCHESTER -- Ronald 'Ronnie' Lee Bailey, 66, of 1650 Sweetgum Road died Sept. 4 at the
Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary; sons, David Allen (Stephanie) Bailey and Dan (Emily)
Bailey; four grandchildren; and sisters, Joyce (Richard) Briggs of Macy, Reba (Larry) Cripe, Mary
(Terry) Wynn.
Military honors will be accorded by the Leroy Shelton American Legion Post #36 and the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1343 at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 at the Good Family Funeral
Home 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Visitation will immediately follow from 1 to 8 p.m. Preferred
memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the 1st Baptist Church Camp Scholarship Fund or
the Fulton County Cancer Fund through the Northern Indiana Community Foundation.
Kimmy Michelle Corbin
ROCHESTER -- Kimmy Michelle Corbin, 47, of 302 Westwood Lane, Rochester died at 8:49
a.m. Sept. 4, 2011 at the Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She is survived by sons, Jamie D. Corbin of Peru, Jeremy M. Corbin of Lafayette; daughter,
Kristi Todd of Tennessee; mother, Sue Ann Blanchard, Rochester; sister, Tammy Boetsma;
brother, Kiron Korbel all of Rochester; two stepbrothers, Chris Blanchard and Scott Blanchard,
and numerous grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m. at the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W.
18th St., Rochester. Visitation is at 4 p.m.
Anna Mae Wise
NAPPANEE -- Anna Mae Wise, 81, of Nappanee, died at 9:10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 5, 2011, at
her daughter’s residence in Nappanee after a short illness.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd; daughters, Gloria Ann (Jack) Hamman, Leesburg, Sue
(Duane) Moneyheffer, Nappanee; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary (Max)
Truex, Wakarusa; brothers, Kenneth (Pat) Middaugh and Clarence Middaugh, both of Nappanee.
Visitation is Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral

Gary A. Davis
SOUTH BEND -- Gary A. Davis, 56, passed away at 10:37 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 in
Memorial Hospital.
Gary was born Dec. 15, 1954 in Plymouth to Vachael and Frances M. (Weakly) Davis of South
Bend. He was preceded in death by his father, Vachael Jan. 11, 2002; great niece, Madalyn
Alizabeth Hensley; and by his in-laws; Ernest and Barbara Manges.
May 1, 1976 he married
Arleen (Bruce) Davis, she survives along with their two daughters,
Sarah Davis and Melissa (Jeff Arndt) Davis both of South Bend; granddaughter, Ashlyn Arndt;
sister, Cynthia 'Cindy' (Richard) Hensley of South Bend; brother, Stephen Davis Sr. of South
Bend; and by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles,
and numerous friends.
Gary was a member of Teamsters Local 364. He was an avid NASCAR fan especially Dale
Earnhardt Sr. and Dale Jr. He enjoyed going to the Bristol, Tenn. race in spring and in fall and to
the Brickyard 400 race in Indy. Gary could be found almost every weekend at the South Bend
Motor Speedway supporting his nephew, Richy. He was known for his practical jokes, and he
also enjoyed camping and loved spending time with his granddaughter Ashlyn and his great nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME,
824 S. Mayflower Road. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 in
the funeral home. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph cemetery.

9, in Salt Lake City.
Survivors include father Michael Zeider of Plymouth, mother Nancy Zeider of Indianapolis, brother
Brandon (Rachel) Zeider of Houston, Texas, sister Brittany (Dan) McCormick of Indianapolis and
niece Emma, maternal grandmother Phoebe (John) Schwemin of Bass Lake.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at the Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen
and will be officiated by Pastor Marc Royer. Burial will take place at the Bremen cemetery.

NILES -- G. Berniel Butler, 90, of Niles, Mich. died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at Memorial
Hospital of South Bend.
She is survived by her husband Lawrence of Niles, two daughters Katha (Michael) Machalleck of
Vandalia, Mich. and Jill (Roger) Jirikovic of Davison, Mich.; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren
and one sister Gretchen (Dean) Kimble of Bremen.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Mishler Funeral Home,
Bremen and will be officiated by Pastor Michael Smith.
Burial will follow at the Bremen cemetery.
Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the funeral home.

CULVER -- Harold I. Johnson, 81, of Culver died Sept. 10, 2011 at St. Joseph Regional Medical
Center, Plymouth.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela (Welsh) Johnson of Culver; sons, David (Debbie) Johnson of
South Bend, Joseph Johnson of Michigan; daughters, Roberta (Joel) Hale of South Bend, Linda
Johnson of Mishawaka, Karen Rippe of Chesterton, Barbara Daley of South Bend; brother,
Charles (Joan) Johnson of Nevada; sisters, Ida Redding of Michigan City, Margie (Ken) Sare of
South Bend; 39 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Thursday, Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Odom Funeral Home, Culver, where
services followed at 3 p.m. Burial is at Burr Oak cemetery.
Jeffrey Paul Ziaja
SOMERSET, Ky. -- Jeffrey Paul Ziaja, 48, of Somerset, Ky., formerly of Plymouth, died
Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at his home.
He is survived by five children, Michael Paul Ziaja, Jacquelyn Marie Ziaja, Keith Edward Ziaja,
Jennifer Anne Ziaja, and Nicole Ann Ziaja, all of Knox; also two grandchildren; several brothers
in the Chicago, Ill. area; and an aunt, Camille Granado, Tinley Park, Ill.
He has been cremated and there are no funeral services scheduled.
Gloria Jean (Carpenter) Friebe
PLYMOUTH -- Gloria Jean (Carpenter) Friebe, beloved wife and mother, passed away
peacefully, early on the morning of September 12, 2011.
She fought many battles with health recently, but chose to face her last battle with cancer, at her
home surrounded by her husband of 45 years, Arnold Friebe; her daughters, Karen (Larry)
Nauman of Heiskell, Tenn. and Terry (Greg) Stohl of Sisters, Ore.; her son, Arthur Friebe of
Winamac; her niece Georgine (Keith) Spencer of Bourbon; and her beloved pets, Cocoa and
Cody.
She is also survived by three granddaughters: Anna Nauman (Dennis) Adams of Heiskell, LeighAnne
Stohl (Justin) Durham of Sisters, and Heather Stohl of New York City, N.Y.; four great grandchildren;
Meredith Nichole Adams, Olivia Lucile Adams, Madison June Durham, and
Marshall Winfield Charles Durham; her brother, David (Gladys) Carpenter of Paris, Tenn.; and
her sisters, Norah (Phil) Gamble of Mentone, Ala.a and Mary Louise (Pearl) Muncy of
McMinneville, Tenn.
Gloria Jean Carpenter was born September 16, 1942, in Argos, to Noah and Minnie Louise
Carpenter.
She was preceded in death by her father, Noah Carpenter, in 1942, and by her mother, Minnie
Louise Carpenter Maxon, in 1980.
Everyone who had met or had known 'Jean' knew she was a strong, confident person, who
faced all challenges head on. She worked hard all of her life at many professions. She was an
electrician for many years and then spent several years buying, refurbishing, and selling
antiques, with her husband Arnold. Their favorite pastime was attending auctions. Jean and
Arnold became well known in the auction circuit around the Plymouth area.
