Joseph A. Whetstone
NAPPANEE -- Joseph A. Whetstone, 78, of 232 Plymouth-Goshen Trail, Nappanee, died at
5:45 p.m., Friday, at his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Katie; daughter, Emma Sue (Marvin) Yoder, Nappanee; sons, David
(Ruth) Whetstone and Ernest (Marlene) Whetstone, both of Nappanee; 10 grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; sister, Anna (Paul) Graber, Guthrie, Ky.; brothers, Ervin (Edna), Topeka,
John Henry (Wilma), Irvington, Ky., Amos Jr. (Katie Ellen), Goshen, David (Alma), Nappanee;
and sister-in-law, Sylvia Whetstone, Nappanee.
Visitation was at the family residence Saturday, where funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m.,
Monday, Aug. 8, 2011. Burial is in Borkholder cemetery.
Arrangements are with Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.
James Harvey Funk
ROCHESTER -- James Harvey Funk, 81, of Rochester died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Woodlawn
Hospital shortly after admission to the emergency room.
He is survived by daughter, Annemarie (Mark) Waychoff of Waynesburg, Pa.; stepchildren,
Glendon (Jeff) Wilson of Rochester, Holly (George) Menifee of Nappanee, Scott (Leah) Smith of
Evansville, Robert Smith and Brandon Smith both of Rochester; sisters, Isabelle (Wayne) Kamp
of Akron, Martha J. (Bill) Schultz of Marble Falls, Texas, Elena Swihart of Silver Lake, Matilda
Rose (Randy) Habeggar of Marble Falls, Texas, Helen 'Susie' (Rafael) Quintanilla of Wabash,
Judith Ann (Greg) Armstrong of Converse; two brothers, Robert E. 'Bob' (Jane) Funk of Van
Buren and Hugh (Rita) Funk of Rochester.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th Street,
Rochester. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and an hour prior to services. A military honors
service will be accorded by the Manitou VFW Post and the Leroy Shelton American Legion Post
at the graveside in the Kewanna Citizens cemetery.
Stanton C. Splix
PLYMOUTH -- Stanton C. Splix, 80, a 16074 Cook Lake Trail resident, passed away at 5:30
a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011 at his home. In recent years he has suffered declining health due to
congestive heart failure.
Stan was born at home April 23, 1931 in Plymouth to Donald S. and Mary C. (Richard) Splix.
He graduated from Plymouth’s Lincoln High School in the class of 1950.
From 1951-55 he served his country in the Air Force and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska at
Eielson Air Force Base with the 58th Weather Recon Squadron as an aircraft mechanic.
Nearly 52 years ago, Sept. 19, 1959 in Lakeville, Stan married
Teresa A. Hummel who survives.
They are members of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Plymouth.
Stan was a tool and die maker for 35 years retiring in 1993 from Capitol Technologies in South
Bend.
Stan loved the water and had resided on Cook Lake for more than 51 years and had enjoyed to
fish and hunt. Following retirement the couple spent 11 winters on the Florida Gulf near
Englewood.
Stan and Teresa are the parents of four children; two boys and two girls. They have experienced
the passing of their daughters; Sandra Splix in 1982 and Peggy Splix Nelson in 2008. Peggy’s
husband Jeff survives of Lake Worth, Fla. and her children; Joshua and Eric (Michele) Vancza.
Son Nick (Cheryl) Splix of Plymouth with children; Nicole, Jeremy and Brittani Splix. Son Michael
Splix also of Plymouth with children; Melissa Splix, Victoria (Nick) Clabaugh and Victor (Desiree)
Splix. Eight great-grandchildren: Harlyn, Hayli, Tyler, Angelique, Jonah, Violet Rose, Cole and
Madix complete their families. Stan’s sister Betty Heiden of Plymouth also survives.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home. A
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. William Kummer at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug.
10 in St. Michael Catholic Church, 613 N. Center Street, Plymouth.
Burial will follow in the New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth with military honors provided by
members of the American Legion Post 27, V.F.W. Post 1162, D.A.V. and South Bend Honor
Guard.

Navona Brown
WARSAW -- Navona Brown, 65, of Warsaw died Aug. 8, 2011 at 5:24 p.m. in Lutheran
Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She is survived by her husband, George F. Brown of Warsaw; daughters, Leveda (Sam) Bird of
Bourbon, Cheryl Yvette Hartman of Warsaw; son, Jason Ray Brown of Warsaw; five
grandchildren; brother, Jerry Rice and sister, Brenda Rice Craig, both of Pathfork, Ky.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011 with visitation one hour prior to the service at
McHatton Sadler Funeral Chapel in Warsaw. Burial will be at the Oakwood cemetery, Warsaw.

PLYMOUTH -- May V. Dixon, 97, died Aug. 8, 2011 at Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth
of natural causes.
She is survived by a son, Lewis E. Troyer of Florida; brother, Donald E. Gross of Rochester; and
two grandchildren.
Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Johnson-Danielson Funeral
Home, Plymouth.
Funeral service is Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home.
Burial will be at Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
Wanda Lee Niere
BREMEN -- Wanda Lee Niere, 72, of Bremen died Monday, Aug. 8, 2011 at Memorial Hospital,
South Bend.
Survivors include daughter, Willett (Lawrence) Hooten of New Carlisle and son, Martin (Irma)
Niere of Plymouth; three grandchildren; several brothers and sisters.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2011 at Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen
and burial will follow at the Bremen cemetery.
Visitation is one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bremen VFW.
Rhylynn J. MacDonald
CULVER -- Rhylynn J. MacDonald, 24 days, of Culver died Aug. 11, 2011 at Riley Hospital for
Children, Indianapolis.
She is survived by mother, Mackenzie MacDonald of Culver; father, Curtis Stacy of Delong;
maternal grandmother, Heather (Tom Bigley) MacDonald of Culver; paternal grandfather,
Dwayne Glover of North Carolina; maternal great-grandparents, June (Jeff Krieg) MacDonald of
Culver; and paternal great-grandparents, Roger (Wanda) Stacy of Delong.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church,
Culver. Funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Harrison Adam "Hal", Jr. Smitson
INDIANAPOLIS -- Harrison Adam 'Hal' Smitson Jr., 77, died Aug. 12, 2011.
He is survived by his brother, Robert (Marilyn); sons, R. David (Ellen), Harrison III 'Chip' (Karyn),
John R. (Laura), and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug.15 at Leppert Mortuary, Nora chapel. A funeral service
will be held at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. with a
brief burial service to follow at 4 p.m. at Washington Township cemetery at Culver and a 5 p.m.
gathering at the Culver Naval Building.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Culver Educational Foundation or Second
Presbyterian Church.
Alvina W. Heet
PLYMOUTH -- Alvina W. Heet, 95, of 1019 N. Walnut St., Plymouth, passed away at 11:25
a.m., Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Alvina was born April 24, 1916, in Bartelso, Ill., to Henry and Caroline (Eiler) Schroeder. Oct. 26,
1936, Alvina became the bride of Henry Francis Heet. He preceded her in death March 29, 1979.
Together they raised their family of 10 children. Alvina was a member of Saint Michael Catholic
Church, where she enjoyed being a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a cook for
Marshall County Parkview Hospital-Holy Cross Parkview Hospital, for 26 years. Alvina and Henry
had lived in the Marshall County area since 1942.
Alvina is survived by her loving family; her sons, Robert Heet of South Bend, Joseph (Marcella)
Heet of Donaldson, Thomas (Jayne) Heet of Plymouth, Michael (Theresa) Heet of Huntington,
Lawrence (Alanna) Heet of Plymouth, and Anthony Heet of Plymouth; her daughters, Mary
(Dennis) Manuwal of Plymouth and Theresa (Charley) Salach of Plymouth; her brothers, Frank
Schroeder, Alvin Schroeder and Cleatus Schroeder all of Illinois; as well as her 32 grandchildren;
several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Alvina was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Francis Heet; her sons, Aloysius Heet and
Francis Heet; two brothers; and four sisters.

PLYMOUTH -- Brian Kersey, 46, 13332 5C Road, Plymouth, died in Memorial Hospital, South
Bend, at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011.
He is survived by his father, Dale Kersey Jr. of Plymouth; sons, Brett Kersey of Plymouth, Jared
Fawley of Kewanna; daughter, Kateline Kersey of Logansport; brother, Steve Kersey of Culver;
and sister, Amy Cole of Plymouth.
Funeral service will be Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011 from 2 to 10 p.m. for friends and family at his
home, 13332 5C Road.
The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, is in charge of

Bruce Edward O'Dell
WALKERTON -- Bruce Edward O’Dell, 56, of Walkerton died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011 in Miller’s
Merry Manor, Walkerton.
Survivors include two brothers, Ronald (Katherine) O’Dell of North Liberty and Larry (Pam)
O’Dell of Lexington, N.C.
There will be no services or visitation. Cremation will take place. Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz
Lake Chapel is handling arrangements.
Laura Mae Helmuth
NAPPANEE -- Laura Mae Helmuth, 80, of 25198 C.R. 54, Nappanee, died at 10:30 p.m.,
Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011 at her residence after a four-month illness and complications from
cancer. She is survived by her husband, Elmer; son, Stephen Joe (Ruth) Helmuth, Milford;
daughters, Carol Rose and Kristine Ann Helmuth, both of Nappanee; three grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; and sisters, Dorothy Yoder, Centerville, Mich., Tressie Otto, Etna Green,
and Mary Mast, Elkhart.
Visitation is all day today at the Merlin Yoder residence (25115 C.R. 54), where funeral services
will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 19, 2011.
Arrangements are with Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.
Michael Scott Calhoun
ROCHESTER -- Michael Scott Calhoun, 26, of Rochester died at 4:22 p.m. Wednesday, Aug.
17, 2011, in Cass County, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
He is survived by his mother, Lisa Calhoun; and grandparents, Larry and Gloria Calhoun of
Rochester.
Private family services will be held.
Public visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200
W. 18th St., Rochester.
Burial will be in the Athens cemetery.
