KNOX -- John C. Mann, 81, of Knox died Sunday, July 24, 2011.
He is survived by a daughter, Gail Sample of Hanna; three stepsons, Phil Owens of Knox, Tim
Owens of Culver, Bobby Owens of Grovertown; three sisters, Martha Allen, Mary Cole, Vera
Cole; two brothers, Bill Mann and Cecil Mann; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; 11
step grandchildren; and 13 step great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 28 at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at M.C. Smith Funeral Home.
Funeral services will follow the visitation Thursday at 1 p.m. at the M.C. Smith Funeral Home,
Knox. Burial will take place at Crown Hill cemetery.
Helen Miller Tobias
NAPPANEE -- Helen Miller Tobias, 62, of 854 S. Jackson St., Nappanee, died at 5:18 p.m.,
Sunday at her residence after a four-year battle with bone cancer.
Surviving are her son, Brian (A.J.) Hartman and five grandchildren all of Nappanee; brothers,
Richard, Steven, Bob, Harry, and Mike Miller; and sisters, Lilly Zika, and Diane Groundwater,
both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 28 at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral
Home, Nappanee, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 29. Cremation will
follow services and inurnment will be in Cedar Rapids at a later date. Memorial contributions may
be made to Family Christian Development Center in Nappanee.
Lyle Kent Vandermark
ROCHESTER -- Lyle Kent Vandermark, 74, of 1358 N. 700 E., Rochester, died at 6:45 p.m.
Sunday, July 24, 2011, at Life Care Center of Rochester.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; a daughter, Michele (Richard) Smith of Rochester; two sons,
Randy (Rosella) Vandermark of Milton, Pa., Roy (Lori) Vandermark of Rochester; six
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Jo (Jay) Wilson of Rochester.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 28 at The Church of Christ, 120 E. 5th St.,
Rochester. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W.
18th St., Rochester and one hour prior to the service in the church.
Burial will be in the Athens Hoover cemetery, Athens, where military rites will be conducted by
the LeRoy Shelton American Legion #36 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars #1343 of Rochester.
Memorials may be made to The Church of Christ.
Larry Dwight "Light Pole", Jr. Birk
PLYMOUTH -- Larry Dwight 'Light Pole' Birk Jr., 48, of 10682 Hawthorn, Lot 21, died at his
residence Thursday, July 28, 2011.
He is survived by his mother, Margaret Schmeltz Birk; daughters, Michelle (Richard) Barngrover
of Argos, and Berniece Birk of Plymouth; son, Corey (Denise) Birk of Plymouth; five
grandchildren; brothers, Tim (Lori) Birk of Bremen, Jeff Birk of Plymouth, Jody (Heather) Birk of
Plymouth, and Brent (Wendy) Birk of LaPaz; and sisters, Margo Wallace of Plymouth, Wanda
(Moses) Alvelo of North Carolina, and Susan (Ben) Swihart of Pennsylvania.
The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth is in charge of funeral
services which will take place at a later date.
Margaret Ellen Cutshaw Stanton
ROCHESTER -- Margaret Ellen Cutshaw Stanton, 89, died Friday, July 29 at Life Care Center,
Rochester.
She is survived by daughters, Jane (Rick) Hoffman of Rochester, and Debra K (George 'Skip')
Stanton of Lexington, Ky.; son, Edward J. (Paige) Stanton of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th
St., Rochester. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Monday and an hour prior to services Tuesday. Burial will
follow in the Athens-Hoover cemetery.
Preferred memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Fulton County Cancer Fund through
the Northern Indiana Community Foundation or the Eagles Scholarship Fund.
Pamela Ann Hackett
PLYMOUTH -- Pamela Ann Hackett, 64, of 1950 Ridgedale Road, South Bend, formerly of
Plymouth, passed away at 10:07 a.m., Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Ironwood Health &
Rehabilitation Center in South Bend.
Pam was born Sept. 5, 1946, in Mishawaka, to John and Doris (Shoemaker) Mortimore Jr. Pam
was a dispatch operator for the 3T Trucking Company in Etna Green. She enjoyed crafting
projects, cooking, and baking. Pam was an active member of the Walnut Church of the Brethren
where she sang in the choir. She was a graduate of Mishawaka High School in the class of
1964. Pam married
Bill Smith and they were blessed with their daughter, Kelly Smith Miller. Pam
later married
Paul Roger Hackett in 1979. They moved to California, where they lived for 25
years, before returning to the Plymouth area. Pam will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Their prayer for her is that she may, 'fly with the angels'.
Pam is survived by her daughter, Kelly Smith Miller of Goshen; her sister, Angelia Mortimore
Huffman of Granger; her brothers, John (Cherie) Mortimore III of Mishawaka, Scott (Aislinn)
Mortimore of Houston, Texas; her goddaughter, Amanda Bishop Winrotte of Plymouth; her
stepmother, Judith Mortimore of Mishawaka; her brother-in-law, Ron S. (Elaine) Hackett of Fort
Wayne; and her sister-in-law, Phyllis J. Conley of Whittier, Calif. Pam was preceded in death by
her parents and her husband, Roger. Roger passed away Feb. 12, 2011.

Helen J. Miller
KEWANNA -- Helen J. Miller, 94, of Kewanna passed away at 8:10 p.m., Saturday, July 30,
2011 at her residence.
Helen was born Feb. 27, 1917 near Lake Bruce in Pulaski County. Jan. 6, 1936 she married
Robert H. Miller and he preceded her in death Aug. 2, 1994.
She was a 1935 Kewanna High School graduate.
Helen was a farmer and homemaker. She was a member of Kewanna United Methodist Church,
Kewanna United Methodist Church Ladies Group, Rochester Rebekah Evergreen Lodge for
more than 75 years, Fulton County Farm Bureau, Fulton County Historical Society, and she
enjoyed gardening and raising flowers.
Survivors include her children, Kenneth Miller and wife Barbara of Plymouth, Judith Mills Scott
and husband John of Frankfort, Sandra Blume and husband Fred of Fallbrook, Calif., and
Ronald Miller and wife Ines of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; sister, Irene Miller of Mt. Morris, Mich.; and
brother, Vern Kissinger and wife Opal of Royal Center; grandchildren, Richard Miller, Randy
Miller, Rod Miller, Traci Hilliard, Suzanne Crump, Nancy Gibson, Scott Mills, Eric Mills, Sherry
Blume, Darren Blume and Ronald Miller Jr.; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild
with also one expecting. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Estella Engle; and sisters, Annabelle Reese, Nora
Hattery, and Catherine Kane.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral
Homes, Kewanna Chapel and also one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday. Services
will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011 at Kewanna United Methodist Church with Chaplain
Jason See officiating. Burial will be at Citizens I.O.O.F. cemetery in Kewanna. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Citizens IOOF cemetery Association and/or Hope Hospice of
Rochester.
Maria Del Carmen Baca
PLYMOUTH -- Maria Del Carmen Baca, 40, of Plymouth died Aug. 1, 2011 at her residence of
natural causes.
She is survived by her husband, Juan Baca of Plymouth; daughter, Kimberly Baca of Plymouth;
sons, Juan Baca Jr., Miguel Baca, and Leonardo Baca all of Plymouth; mother, Maria Consuelo
Arvizu; sisters, Maria Dolores Malagon of California, Maria De Los Angeles Martinez of Nevada,
Maria Guadalupe Ortega of Nevada, and Maria Consuelo Velasquez of California; and brothers,
Miguel Flores and Sergio Flores both of California.
Visitation is Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home,
Plymouth.
Funeral service is Friday, Aug. 5, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, Plymouth.
Burial will be at St. Michael cemetery.
Helen Mae Freeman
SOUTH BEND -- Helen Mae Freeman was born at the home of her parents, Clarence and
Hazel (Ritter) Hoover in Marshall County Jan. 30, 1918. She was the first of four children —
Martha (Wheeler), Dwight and Dale, all deceased.
Helen graduated from Tyner High School where she met the love of her life -- Roy Freeman.
They were married
at the Pine Creek parsonage April 16, 1938, and celebrated their 73rd
wedding anniversary earlier this year. They lived in St. Joseph and Marshall Counties all their
lifetime.
Helen was born and raised in the Pine Creek Church of the Brethren congregation and was
active there throughout her lifetime until recent years when health issues restricted participation.
She was active in Women’s Fellowship and served as their president on more than one
occasion. She sang in the Ladies Chorus and was a Sunday School teacher. She and Roy were
lifetime deacons and served conscientiously in that capacity.
Helen had four children: Duane (Joan Fricker), deceased; Gary, deceased; Shirley Braner and
Mary Ann Haysley (David, deceased). She has 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 8
great-great-grandchildren.
Helen was a very giving/caring person who cared for 38 newborn foster babies, occasionally two
or three at one time. She volunteered one day a week for several years at the (then) Northern
Indiana Children’s Hospital, working with handicapped children. She loved to sew and made
numerous pajamas and gowns for the hospital residents.
Helen was a terrific cook and enjoyed sharing her meals with family and friends. Nearly every
Sunday dinner included guests. Most of what she served came from their farm. A large garden
was planted every year and vegetables were canned and frozen by the bushel. They raised their
own beef, pork and chickens. Helen developed a door-to-door egg route in South Bend where
she delivered eggs weekly.
She taught foods and baking to 4-H members. Active in Goodwill Auxiliary, Helen enjoyed
sewing outfits for donated dolls. One year she dressed 130 dolls for Goodwill. In later years, she
enjoyed sewing sleepwear and crocheting slippers and hats for the Neighborhood Center in
Plymouth.
She and Roy moved from Plymouth to Southfield Village (South Bend) when they gave up
driving. They enjoyed four years in Assisted Living before moving to Healthcare, more than two
years ago.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 21 at 4 p.m. at Pine Creek Church, corner of Pine
and Stanton Roads, North Liberty, with Pastor Steve VanHouten (Pine Creek) and Chaplain Deb
Hewitt (Chaplain, Southfield Village) officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until
time of service at the church.
Helen’s body was donated to Indiana University Medical School. In lieu of flowers, memorials
may be made to the Pine Creek Church or to Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Ct.,
South Bend, 46637.

Raymond Ira Clevenger
WALKERTON -- Raymond Ira Clevenger, 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011 in St. Joseph
Regional Medical Center, Plymouth after a short illness.
Survivors include his wife, Doris; two sons, Dennis (Cindy) Clevenger of Tempe, Ariz. and
Russell (Peggy) Clevenger of Elkhart; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011 at 3 p.m. EDT at Rannells Funeral Home,
Koontz Lake Chapel. Cremation will take place after the service. Visitation is Saturday, Aug. 13
from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given
to the Walkerton American Legion.
Raymond "Tiny" Bockman
PLYMOUTH -- Raymond 'Tiny' Bockman, 71, 9151 11th Road, Plymouth, passed away
Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at 6:04 a.m., at Elkhart Hospice House, Elkhart.
Ray was born Nov. 30, 1939, in Decorah, Iowa, to Aloysius and Martha (Cohen) Bockman. He
moved to Plymouth when he was about 3 years old. Ray was a graduate of Plymouth High
School. He married
the former Joyce Taylor, Oct. 26, 1963, in Plymouth, at Saint Michael
Catholic Church. Ray worked and retired from NIPSCO. He owned Bockman Salvage Yard, was
a member of Saint Michael Catholic Church, SOAR, and TAC (Tax Awareness Committee). He
enjoyed attending city and county political meetings. Ray collected model trains, stamps, coins,
and cars. He served in the Army with the National Guard of Indiana.
Ray is survived by his wife, Joyce Bockman; their daughters, Jill (Don) McAfee of Elkhart, and
Shelley Bockman of Plymouth; his granddaughter, Merissa McAfee of Elkhart; and his brother,
John (Glenda) Bockman of Plymouth. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Christopher,
and his parents.
