When Lee was 21, she began working at the Federal Screw Works Company in Chelsea, Mich., as part of the war effort, and made her home with a favorite aunt and uncle and their children. A week's vacation to Sault Ste.
Marie with a friend resulted in her meeting a young man from Kaneville, stationed at Fort Brady.
On Aug. 4, 1942, Lee and Keller were united in marriage in Francisco, Mich.
Keller was called overseas during World War II and Lee returned to work in Chelsea. In Dec. 1945, Keller returned from the European Theater, and Keller and Lee moved to the Nickels farm in Kaneville. She quickly grew close to the Nickels family and their Kaneville neighbors on Lorang Road. Movingin 1951, from the farmhouse to the north end of the farm, she and Keller raised their sons, Gary and Keith and built the Nickels' Redi-Mix business, where Lee ran the office until the business closed in 1976. Lee then worked for Robert J.
Kearns, delivering accounting and payroll statements to area businesses until the early 1990s when she then permanently retired. In 1995, Keller and Lee moved to her present home in Elburn.
She was a very active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #630, and an avid supporter of the Elburn Lions Club. Until their move to Elburn from Kaneville, Lee maintained ties to the Kaneville United Methodist Church.
Lee was an avid golfer and took great pride in the hole-in-one she scored at Idlewild Golf Course in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., near the family summer cottage.
But the source of even greater pleasure and pride were her three grandchildren.
Always ready for a good game ofcards, Lee was known for her friendly demeanor and upbeat attitude. Even in failing health, her outlook was positive and her enjoyment of good conversation never waned.
