RUBY M. GLIDEWELL
(1914~2004)

PEKIN ~ Ruby May Glidewell, 90, of 343 South 4th Street, Apartment 504, died at 9:25 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at her residence.

Born May 27, 1914 in Dresden, Tennessee to Birch and Mary Pace Ellis, she married the Rev. Harry O. Glidewell on October 5, 1935 in Hickman, Kentucky. He died November 2, 1997 in Pekin. The last of eight children, she also was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.

Surviving are two sons, Rev. Bill (Treva) Glidewell of Melbourne, Florida and Jess (Rosemary) Glidewell of Pekin; two daughters, Jean (Richard) Heberer of Pekin and Susie (David) Stiles of Mapleton; ten grandchildren, Rev. Keith (Brandie) Heberer of Effingham, Scott (Debbie) Heberer of Manito, Renee (Phil) Schertz of Lowpoint, Stephanie (Rick) Boyington of Melbourne, Florida, Jay Glidewell, Tracey (Rev. Chad) Harlan, Steven (Dawn) Glidewell and Aaron (Kara) Stiles, all of Pekin, Jennifer (Charles) Young of Mapleton and Jessica (Brett) Helm of Normal and eighteen great-grandchildren.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Pekin First Church of God, where her husband was the founding Pastor and she supported him in ministry. She also was instrumental in starting the Wednesday night Bible study at the Golden Arms in Pekin.

Private services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, September 13, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Michael Ebert and Rev. R. Keith Heberer, her grandson, will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pekin First Church of God Building Fund, 2520 Maywood Avenue, Pekin, Illinois 61554.

CARL G. DANE
(1936~2004)

PEKIN ~ Carl Gene Dane, 68, of 230 Court Street, Apartment 901, died at 4:22 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2004 in the emergency room of Pekin Hospital. He was formerly of Manito.

Born March 23, 1936 in Maquon Township, Knox County to Jack Carl and Alice Alta Brown Dane, he married Wanita Ann Wisher on August 7, 1959 in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Wendy Sue (Ron) Wilson and Pamela J. (Wayne, III) Englebrecht, both of Pekin, Wanda L. Dane of Peoria, and Jacqueline N. (Robert) Siegler of South Pekin; three sons, Michael A. (Joyce) Dane, Carl N. Dane, and Keith A. Dane, all of South Pekin; twenty-two grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Cleo Richards of Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son (Andrew J. Dane on February 11, 1981), one grandson, and one brother (Jack Dehn, Jr.).

Mr. Dane worked for International Harvester Motor Truck Division in Peoria as a journeyman diesel mechanic for 5 years. He later worked for Peoria Public Schools District #150 for 17 years as a fleet mechanic. He last worked as a driver for Wilson Towing in Pekin for 7 years, retiring in 1991. He also had owned and operated C&W CB Sales and Repair in Manito for several years. His CB handle was “Great Dane”.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1962 and attended services at the Pekin Ward. He was first counselor of the adult Sunday school, assistant librarian, and elder at the Pekin Ward. He also was a past Family History Missionary for the Peoria Stake Center.

He was a former member of REACT in Mason County.

He raced stock cars during the 1950’s and 1960’s and was a team racing driver, both in the Peoria area.

He enjoyed gardening and canning.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 2004 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pekin, where visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Bishop Shaun Shurtliff will preside. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Arrangements are by the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

MARION V. NORMAN
(1909~2004)

CREVE COEUR—Marion Viola Norman, 95, of 818 Highview St. died at 8:54 p.m., Monday, September 6, 2004 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born January 25, 1909 in Sparta, Illinois to Albert and Ella Mae Fulkerson, she married Harry C. Norman on July 14, 1927.

She was preceded in death by her husband in September 1951 in Creve Coeur; 1 daughter, Edna Mae Leith; 1 brother; and 1 sister.

Surviving are 2 granddaughters, Susan Lewis of Groveland and Melody (Ray) Swan of Bradenton, Florida; and 5 great-grandchldren.

Mrs. Norman last worked as a cook at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in East Peoria for 9 years, retiring in 1979. Previously, she had worked as a cook at Buehler Home in Peoria for 8 ½ years and at the ABC Washing Machine Company in East Peoria for 6 years.

She enjoyed cooking and jig saw puzzles.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, September 10, 2004 at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. Rev. Don Zumwalt will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., Friday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

DONALD SCHIMMELPFENNIG
(1936~2004)

GREEN VALLEY ~ Donald Eugene Schimmelpfennig, Sr., 68, of 12732 Townline Road, rural Green Valley, died at 10:57 p.m. Saturday, September 4, 2004 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born July 8, 1936 in Pekin to Oscar P. and Cecil Dorothy Von Boeckman Schimmelpfennig, he married Sandra S. Van Dyke on March 14, 1989 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives.

Also surviving are his mother of Delavan; one daughter, Mary Jo Ferguson of Clinton; one son, Donald E., Jr. (Sean) Schimmelpfennig of Manito; one step-son, Kevin L. (Janet) Van Dyke of Pekin; two grandsons, Jim Ferguson of Bloomington and Donald E. Schimmelpfennig, III of Manito; two step-granddaughters, Kelsey Van Dyke and Jacy Van Dyke, both of Pekin and one sister, Barbara J. Rushing of Emden.

His father preceded him in death on June 27, 1998 in rural Green Valley.

He was a retired member of Ironworkers Local 112 in East Peoria, where he worked out of for many years. A member of the Tazewell County Farm Bureau, he also farmed for many years in Tazewell County.

He was a member of Pekin Eagles Aerie 1869.

He formerly raised draft horses and beef cattle and was a longtime blacksmith.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Green Valley.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2004 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Thomas R. Wenndt and William G. Krueger, DCE will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sand Prairie Cemetery in rural Green Valley.

VERNON GARMAN
(1925~2004)

PEKIN ~ Vernon Raymond Garman, 78, of 1412 North 4th Street in Pekin, died at 3:48 p.m. Saturday, September 4, 2004 at Pekin Hospital.

Born October 21, 1925 in Spring Lake Township, Tazewell County to Val A. and Florence Myrtle Bequeaith Garmann, he married Helen Elaine Nannen on July 24, 1949 in Green Valley. She died August 2, 2002 in Pekin. He also was preceded in death by one son (Douglas G. Garman on June 14, 1987), one brother and two sisters.

Surviving are one son, Steven Dean (Sara) Garman of rural Tremont; three grandchildren, Zachariah R. Garman, Christopher D. Garman and Nikita S. Garman, all of rural Tremont and one sister, Vera Miller of Delavan.

Mr. Garman was a lifelong farmer in Cincinnati and Sand Prairie Townships in Tazewell County.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Green Valley.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Green Valley Cemetery in Green Valley. The Rev. Thomas R. Wenndt and William G. Krueger, DCE will officiate. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel.

HAROLD APPLEYARD
(1934~2004)

PEKIN ~ Harold Ernest Appleyard, 70, of 921 Catherine Street, died at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2004 at Pekin Hospital.

Born July 27, 1934 in Peoria to Ernest Hollingsworth and Katheryn Frances Lambie Roberts, he married Juanita Lee Templeton on January 25, 1957 in Tacoma, Washington. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Roger E. (Diana) Appleyard and Glen E. (Theresa) Appleyard, both of Pekin; two daughters, Julie D. Appleyard and Lisa D. Appleyard, both of Pekin; five granddaughters; one great-grandson; five brothers, Richard (Evon) Appleyard and Theodore (Becky) Appleyard, both of North Pekin, James (Lucy) Roberts of Oregon, Alexander (Shirley) Roberts of Creve Coeur, and George (Pat) Roberts of Pekin; two sisters, Maxine (John) Pennington of Pekin and Frances (Kenneth) Perkins of Chillicothe; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers (Emil Appleyard, Harvey Roberts, and Robert Roberts), and one sister (Josephine Gilroy).

He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Appleyard worked for Illinois Machine and Tool in North Pekin as a machinist for over 34 years, last working Friday, August 27, 2004. He previously worked as a machinist for Caterpillar, Inc. and LaTourneau-Westinghouse. He also had owned and operated the Gulf Gas Station on Main Street in Creve Coeur for 3 years.

He was a member of the George M. Maple Memorial AMVETS Post #235 in Pekin. He was a former member and past president of both the Celestial City Campers in Pekin and the Odd Fellows Lodge in East Peoria.

He enjoyed square dancing and was a former member of the Circle Eights and the Squares on Wheels Square Dance Clubs, both of Pekin. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Robert N. Brite, Jr. will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, September 6, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, where military rites will be accorded by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.

MERLE J. WAECHTER
(1924~2004)

PEKIN ~ Merle Joseph Waechter, 80, of 1540 El Camino Drive, died at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at Pekin Manor. He was formerly of 1903 Sheridan Road in Pekin.

Born January 19, 1924 in Peoria to Albert J. and Genevieve Kerker Waechter, he married Alice M. Rinaldo on June 5, 1948 in Pekin. She died March 13, 1994 in Pekin. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Surviving are one son, James J. (Joanne) Waechter of Morton; one daughter, Judith A. (Randy) Farnam of Green Valley; four grandchildren, Shannon B. (Mitchell) Doubet and Brooke M. Farnam, both of Green Valley and Matthew J. Waechter and Julie A. Waechter, both of Morton; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bernice Meismer of Lacon. He also leaves his long-time loving companion, Patricia A. Baker of Pekin.

A United States Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Mr. Waechter worked for Central Illinois Light Company for 38 years first in Pekin and last at the E. D. Edwards Station in Bartonville, retiring in 1982 as a general mechanic. He also owned and operated Waechter’s Small Engine Repair out of his home for 50 years.

He was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin, where he was a long-time church usher. He also was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #916 in Pekin. He coached biddy basketball for many years at the Pekin Union Mission. He enjoyed playing golf and played in the Men’s Senior League at Parkview Golf Course in Pekin. An avid bowler, he bowled in the Pekin Businessmen’s Tuesday Night League at Roxy Lanes in Pekin for 50 consecutive years.

A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2004 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. The Rev. David Whiteside will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Pekin, where military rites will be accorded by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.

DONNA J. GOTTSCHALK
(1937~2004)

PEKIN ~ Donna Jean Gottschalk, 67, of 804 Lawndale, died at 12:33 p.m. Sunday, August 29, 2004 at Methodist Medical Center of Illinois in Peoria.

Born July 4, 1937 in Bloomington to Edward C. Sr. and Maudie Mae Hemmle Houchens, she married Gilbert “Dutch” Gottschalk on March 30, 1958 in Bloomington. He survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Debbie (Donnie) Dile of Pekin; one granddaughter, Tiffany K. Dile of Pekin; one brother, Edward C. Houchens, Jr. of Normal; one sister, Joan Kay (William) McFarland of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri; two nieces; one nephew; one great-niece; and one great-nephew.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Mrs. Gottschalk worked for Commercial National Bank and later First of America Bank, both in Peoria as a bank teller for 30 years, retiring in May of 1994.

She was a member of the Second Reformed Church and the Emblem Club #424, both of Pekin.

She enjoyed bowling, cooking, and sitting out on her deck.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Harmen Heeg and Rev. Ralph H. Cordes will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be at noon Wednesday at Park Hill Cemetery in Bloomington.

NANCY C. CURTIS
(1947~2004)

PEKIN ~ Nancy Carol Curtis, 57, of 308 North 10th Street, died at 9:40 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2004 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

Born March 24, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland to Thomas Jefferson and Helen Louise Letmate Stone, she married Terry Lee Mylott on July 30, 1966 in Gillette, Wyoming. She later married Daniel Lee Curtis on March 11, 1999 in Peoria. He survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Teresa Lynn (Steve) Mylott and Jennie Luree-Lynn (David) Noe, both of Pekin; four grandchildren; and one brother, Thomas Jefferson (Deborah) Stone, Jr. of Birmingham, Alabama.

Her parents preceded her in death.

She worked as a home health care giver for many years.

She was member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Pekin, where she volunteered and was involved with many activities.

She enjoyed camping and collecting anything pertaining to roses.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Pekin. The Rev. Syl Carter will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Private Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.

CLAUD SMITH
(1917~2004)

PEKIN ~ Claud Raymond Smith, 86, of 300 Belle Street, Alhambra, died at 5 a.m., Friday, August 27, 2004 at Saint Joseph Hospital in Highland. He was formerly of 1913 Willow Street in Pekin.

Born September 29, 1917 in Hiram, Missouri to Charles Boots and Clemantine Hughey Smith, he married E. Merle Mayfield on August 2, 1947 in Hiram, Missouri. She died February 17, 1995 in Pekin. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (J. D. Smith and W. Earl Smith), and one sister (Dorothy Ward).

Surviving are one daughter, Patti A. (David) Steen of Pocahontas; two brothers, Charles H. Smith and Elmer L. Smith, both of Jackson, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

A United States Army veteran of World War II, he served from July 1, 1941 to November 9, 1945. He attained the rank of Private First Class.

Mr. Smith began working on May 9, 1953 for Keystone Steel and Wire Company in Bartonville where he worked for 26 years. He retired September 30, 1979 from the Steel Mill.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Pekin.

He was an avid gardener.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Lloyd J. Bradshaw will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 30, 2004 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, where military rites will be accorded by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.
