Marie Fulkerson
Marie Fulkerson, 96, of Carmi, passed away during the morning of Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. She was born October 27, 1913, in Ridgway, IL, the daughter of Logan and Stella Smith. She married Chauncey W. Fulkerson on July 13, 1935 and he passed away on March 4, 1991. Mrs. Fulkerson worked in the office of Tubescope in Carmi. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Burnt Prairie.
She is survived by a niece, Melba Fulkerson and family; close friends, Mr. and Mrs. David A. Johnson and family, and Mr. and Mrs. William Mears and family; and several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chauncey; and one brother, George Smith.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 12, 2009, at 1:00 pm, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until the time of services. Burial will take place in Burnt Prairie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Phoenix Foundation.
Marguerite Rhoads Appel
After a long illness, Marguerite Rhoads Appel passed away on January 22, 2009, at the Enfield Healthcare Center at the age of 90. Marguerite was born Marguerite Virginia Welton in Charleston, IL, on July 13, 1918, the daughter of Homer A. and Lela Gertrude (Childress) Welton. She married Vernie (Muddy) Rhoads on October 21, 1939 and made their home in Casey, IL. Their early married life took them to Mt. Vernon, IL, Benton, IL, and finally to Enfield, IL in early 1946 where Marguerite lived the remainder of her life.
Marguerite worked many years at the Carmi township Hospital as a nurse's aid, had been a member of the Federation of Women's clubs through the Enfield Opportunity Club, a member of the Daughters of Egypt Rebekah Lodge No. 357, and a member of the Carmi Township Hospital “Walking Blood Bank.”
Marguerite is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry Allen and Linda Rhoads, of Mt. Vernon, IN; a daughter and son-in-law, Nina Kay and Carlos Haskins, of Evansville, IN; one grandson, Mark Allen Rhoads, of Mt. Vernon, IN; two granddaughters and their husbands, Holly Bryanna and Travis Smith, of Hayes, VA, and Susan Nicole and Aaron Tucker, of Mt. Vernon, IN; a great-granddaughter, Nicole Eryn Tucker, and a great-grandson, Carson Neal Tucker, both of Mt. Vernon, IN; a step-granddaughter and her husband, Janice Rachel and Brad Shively of Marietta, GA; a step-great-grandson, Michael Dean Shively, and a step-great-granddaughter, Keira Judith Shively, both of Marietta, GA.
Marguerite is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 32 years, Vernie (Muddy) Rhoads; a daughter, Brenda Jean Rhoads; a grandson, David Scott Rhoads; and a second husband, Leo Appel.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, January 25, 2009, at 5:00 pm, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield. A visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until the time of service in the chapel. Burial will be at the Washington Street Cemetery in Casey, IL , on Monday, January 26, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Donations may be made to Enfield Healthcare Center Activities Fund. Ida Mae Bachman
Ida “Mae” Bachman, 55, of Tremont, IL, formerly of Carmi, died Thursday, March 26, 2009, at Washington Christian Village. She was born March 3, 1945, in Carmi, IL the daughter of George Ervin and Anna Mae (Wilson) Rush. She married Louis B. Bachman on August 1, 1971, in Carmi.
Surviving are her husband, Louis of Tremont; one daughter, Ashley Anna Bachman of Tremont; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ruthetta and Paul Logan of Lincoln, IL, and Brenda Voyles of Tremont; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Judy Rush of Carrier Mills, IL, and William and Bev Rush of Springerton, IL; her mother-in-law, Mildred Bachman of Carmi, IL; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Misty Michelle on April 2, 1988, and also aunts and uncles. She was also preceded by Grandma Ida Wilson and Aunt Macel Hoover, with whom she made her home.
She was a manager at Speed Way on Prospect and later at Circle-K on Knoxville, both in Peoria, IL.
She was a member of the Highview Christian Church in East Peoria. She volunteered in fund raising at the Children's Miracle Network.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 4:00 pm, Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home in Morton, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm, Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield, IL. Visitation will be held from noon until the time of service in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be at Bruce Chapel Cemetery in Carmi.

Frieda Blackford
Frieda K. Blackford, age 79, of Carmi, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. She was born October 16, 1929, in White County, IL, the daughter of Charles Maurice Lichtenberger and Bertha A. Barlow. She married John P. Blackford on June 30, 1948 in Calvin, KY. She was a member of the Carmi VFW Women's Auxillary and the American Legion. She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church in Carmi. Frieda loved feeding birds and caring for the flowerbeds where she lived.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ron Blackford of Crossville, IL, and Larry and Chui-Wen Blackford of West Hills, CA; a daughter and a son-in-law, Bonnie and Ray Cieslak of Burlington, NC; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary Lee of Winterhaven, IL, Pauline and Carl Bachman of Winterhaven, FL, and Betty and Marion French of Carmi; two granddaughters, Heather Cieslak of Los Angeles, CA, and Autumn Blackford of West Hills, CA; a grandson, Grant Cieslak of Chicago, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, Ray and Ralph Lichtenberger, and one sister, Edith Haley.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm, Friday, March 13, 2009, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service in the funeral home chapel. Interment will take place at White County Memorial Gardens. Lloyd Kenny Conner
Lloyd Kenny Conner, age 70, of Carmi, passed away the evening of Thursday, August 13, 2009, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was born June 25, 1939 in White County, IL, the son of Loyd L. and Lillie H. (Daniels) Conner. Lloyd had worked at Bell Telephone, but eventually became a chef, working at many different restaurants. He was involved with Scouting as a younger man. Lloyd was a member of the American Legion, the VFW Mens Auxiliary, the Carmi Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge in Grayville, and the Eagles Lodge in McLeansboro. He was a member of the Carmi Christian Church.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth Ray Conner of Boynton Beach, FL; his mother, Lillie Conner, of Henderson, KY; a brother and sister-in-law, Dillard Eugene “Gene” and Winnie Conner of Henderson, KY; three nieces and two nephews-in-law, Sieglinde Williams and her son Corey, Melinda and Larry Baker and their children, Max and Malia, and Misty and Tom Fleming and their son, Thomas; as well as many other cousins, aunts, and uncles.
He is preceded in death by his father, Loyd; and an infant brother, Raymond.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 23, 2009, at 3:00 pm at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from Noon until the time of service in the funeral home chapel. military rites will be performed by the Carmi VFW and American Legion at Little Wabash Cemetery in Crossville where interment will take place.
Verla Davis
Verla Davis, age 66, of Carmi, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2009, at Phoenix Rehabilitation and Nursing. She was born December 21, 1942 in Maunie, IL the daughter of Rev. Martin and Mildred Arlene (Tower) Holtzclaw. She married Henry Davis August 12, 1960, in New Haven, IL, and he preceded her in death on October 3, 2000. Verla was a Certified Nursing Aide. She was a Past President and Lifetime Member of the Carmi VFW Ladies Auxilliary and a Lifetime Member of the American Legion of Carmi. She attended the First Apostolic Church of New Haven. Verla is remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother.
She is survived by a son, Frank Davis of Enfield, and his girlfriend, Toni Lydick; a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Rick Campbell of Carmi; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Max and Rosemary Holtzclaw of Moorseville, IN, Rev. Roy and Joyce Holtzclaw of Maunie, IL, and Andrew and Lorna Holtzclaw of Carmi, IL; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Margaret Stover of Norris City, IL, Martha Sue and Dewey Glore of Indianapolis, IN, and June and Karl Hamann of Pasco, WA; two granddaughters, Sierra Beasley of Carmi, and Makenzie Davis of Evansville, IN, and a sister-in-law, Pat Holtzclaw; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Lloyd Holtzclaw; a sister, Wanda Randolph; three siblings who passed away in infancy, two sisters and another brother; a nephew Ricky Paul Stover; and a sister-in-law, Joan Watts, formerly of New Haven, IL.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at Martin Cemetery, near Petersburg, IN, at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from 4 to 8 pm at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi.
Robert P. Carter
Robert P. Carter, age 68, of Springerton, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at his home. He was born October 18, 1940 at Springerton, the son of Harold and Ruth (Rister) Carter. He was married to Laurel A. Devolve and she survives.
Mr. Carter had retired from B & W in Mt. Vernon, IN. He later worked as a farmhand. He was a United States
Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. He was a 43 year member of the Springerton American Legion and a member of the Carmi V.F.W.
He is survived by his wife Laurel; three step-sons, Anthony Fox of Texas, Jason LaFlamme of Connecticut and Christopher LaFlamme of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Mary Jane Myers and Vera Boucherie both of Springerton; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Gerald Carter.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. On Friday April 17, 2009 at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. On Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers , memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
Bonnie O. Dennis
Bonnie O. Dennis, age 78, of Carmi and formerly of Herald , went to meet the Lord on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center. Her loving family was at her side. Bonnie was born May 28, 1931, in Oilton, OK, the daughter of Elroy and Odessa Bevel, both of whom preceded her. She married James R. “Benny” Dennis on June 22, 1947, in a double ceremony with lifelong friends, Betty and Clinton Clark of rural Carmi. Benny and Bonnie were lifetime owner and operators of several service stations and restaurants in Carmi, serving the community and the surrounding areas for over 50 years. Benny would do the cashier and public relations and Bonnie the cooking and the hiring and firing (alongside sons Barry and Tony).Benny preceded her in death on July 28, 1994. She attended local churches in Carmi – Mercy Gate and World Harvest Christian Center.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Gloria Dennis of Herald, and Tony and Stephanie Dennis of Carmi; two sisters, Diane Stanhope of Mt. Sterling, KY, and Marsha Pritchard of McLeansboro; four precious grandsons, Benjamin Dennis, Brock Dennis, Keegan Dennis, and Matthew Broom; four precious granddaughters, Tiffany (nee Dennis) Porter, Shelda (nee Dennis) Noto, Jennifer McCormick, and Kathleen A. Buchanan; eleven great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces, and nephews, and her loving dogs at home, Sassy, Albert, and Baby.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, August 16, 2009, at 2:00 pm, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi, with graveside services to follow at White County Memorial Gardens in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8:00 pm, Saturday, August 15, 2009, in the funeral home chapel. Donations may be made to Feed The Children and will be accepted at The Coffee Shop as well as the funeral home.
Dorothy M. Downen
Dorothy M. Downen, age 90 of Carmi, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Meadowood Nursing Home in Grayville. She was born September 21, 1918 in Hawthorne Township of White County, Illinois, the daughter of Delmer and Florence (Roser) Britton. She married Paul Downen on August 30, 1936 and he preceded her in death on April 10, 1970.
Dorothy and her husband ran a gas station for many years. Afterwards, she worked in several of the local stores. She was a member of the Hawthorne Home Extension. She was a member of the McHenry Church.
She is survived by two cousins, Jo Ellen Etnire and Nancy Bass both of Decatur; her close family friends, Lana and Jim McCutchen of Goddard, Kansas and their children, Amber and Jason; and other relatives and friends as well.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at 11:00 am, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until the time of service in the funeral home chapel. Interment will take place at Stokes Chapel near Crossville.
Ray Evans
Ray Evans, 72, of Carmi, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, IN. He was born October 26, 1936, in Butler County, KY, the son of Clifton and Maxine (Ralph) Evans. He married Cleta F. Lowry on June 13, 1958, in Shawneetown, IL.
He served in the U.S.
Army during the Korean conflict. His family was his life; the oilfield was his occupation. He loved to fish and play video games. He was strong in faith and loved the Lord. He was a member of Marshall Ferry General Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Cleta F.; four sons, Gary (Margaret) Duvall of St. Louis, MO, Leon (Theresa) Duvall of Carmi, Mark Evans of Carmi, and Wesley (Carolyn) Evans of Carmi; A daughter, Victoria (Lonnie) Price of Kansas City, MO; ten grandchildren, Steven Duvall and Susan Duvall, both of St. Louis, MO, Robert (Maleah) Duvall, USMC, of California, Sandra (Charles) Siegel of Evansville, IN, Misty (Josh) Egbert of Carmi, Steven (Elisabeth) Evans of Carmi, Christina (Bill) Jordan of Georgetown, IL, Caleb Campbell and Josh Campbell, both of Carmi, and Cliff Goff of Carmi; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph Evans; and a son, Larry Ray Duvall.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 8, 2009, at 2:00 pm, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Marshall Ferry Cemetery with military rites by the Carmi VFW and American Legion. Violet Fleming
Violet Fleming, 92, formerly of Enfield, passed away the evening of Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. She was born January 22, 1917 in White County, IL, the daughter of William O. and Nora (Brown) Bradshaw. She married Everett O. Fleming on December 18, 1937 in Mt Vernon, IN. Mrs. Fleming was a member of Enfield United Methodist Church. Violet was a local correspondent for the Carmi Times, having written the “Asbury Chapel News” for several years.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Karen Fleming of Olathe, KS; and a grandson, Mike Fleming of Carmi.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett; a brother Victor Bradshaw; and two sisters, Verla Cleveland and Velma Lamp.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at 11:00 a.m., at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm to in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, May 12, 2009. Interment will take place in Enfield Cemetery. Emma M. Foley
Emma M. Foley, age 95, of Carmi, formerly of Johnston City, IL, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. She was born July 18, 1913 in Hamilton County, IL, the daughter of Fred Hood and Elizabeth Mae Blades. She married Carl Foley in McLeansboro on January 11, 1930 and he preceded her on March 19, 1995. Emma was a devoted mother and homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church in Johnston City, IL, and was a past member of the Springerton Christian Church. Emma was very creative and loved to decorate and grow all types of plants.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Carl E. and Eleanor Foley of Chandler, IN; two daughters and a son-in-law, Joan South and Sondra and Charles Taylor, all of Johnston City, IL; thirteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and five sisters.
A funeral service will be held Friday, June 12, 2009, at 1:00 pm, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield. Visitation will be held in the funeral home chapel from 10:00 am until the time of service. Interment will take place at Kitty Sweetin Cemetery in Mill Shoals.
Jerry W. French
Jerry W. French, age 61, of Carmi, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana. He was born December 11, 1947 in Carmi, the son of Giltner and Tilda (Combs) French. He married Paula A. Hosman in Mt. Vernon, IL on February 15, 1968. Jerry was a Vietnam veteran and was awarded the purple heart and soldier's medal . He retired from Illinois Department of Natural Resources as an oil well inspector. He had also worked on the railroad. He had been a Mason for many years. Mr. French was a Past Commander and a lifetime member of the Carmi VFW post. He was also a member of the American Legion in Carmi. He attended the Maunie Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Paula, of Carmi; a son and a daughter-in-law, Michael W. and Kathleen French of Carmi; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Marion and Betty French of Carmi and Allen French of Baton Rouge, LA; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Margaret Proctor of Fairview, OK, Marie York of Carmi, Leona and Carl Julian of Carmi, and Jenny and Bob Dedoming of Mt Vernon, IN; a granddaughter, Sidney French of Carmi; and many other relatives and friends.
He preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Shelley French; three brothers, Arnold, Clarence, and John French; two sisters, Kathryn Sandidge and Judy Duvall.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at 11:00 am, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 5 until 8:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Interment will take place in Kuykendall Cemetery in Carmi with military Burial rites by the Carmi VFW and American Legion posts. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Sharon Gail Glascock
Sharon Gail Glascock, age 70, of Carmi, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Hamilton County Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. She was born November 7, 1938 in Warrick Co., IN, the daughter of Claude and Dorothy (Hart) Julian. She was a member of the Eastside Penecostal Church in Carmi.
She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Julian of Carmi, a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Linda Glascock of Carmi; three daughters, Ronda, and her husband Richard Allison, Donnita Brown, and Alison Glascock and her boyfriend Len Barbre, all of Carmi; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Leona Julian of Carmi, and Daryl and Dolla Julian of Nippa, KY; two sisters, Anna Sneed of Carmi, and Anita and her husband Charles Johnson of Carmi, four grandchildren, Jack and his wife Shasta Allison, Josh Allison, Isaac Glascock, and Dalton Hosman, all of Carmi; and a great granddaughter, Avalea Allison of Carmi.
She is preceded in death by her father; a son, James Wilson; a daughter, Darla Hunsinger, a brother, James Julian; and three sisters, Claudia Blazier, Kay Roberts, and Jan Sutton.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at 1:00 pm, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until the time of service in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be at Kuykendall Cemetery in Carmi.
Frances Graves
Frances Graves, 86, of Carmi, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2009, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born September 3, 1922 in Clay City, IL, the daughter of Eugene and Myrle (Cowling) Mayden. She married J.L. “Chick” Graves on June 9, 1951 in Crossville, IL, and he preceded her. She worked at GTE for almost 38 years. She was Carmi City Clerk from 1981 until 1989. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and playing the organ. For the past five years, Frances had made her home at Wabash Christian Retirement Center Memory Unit.
She is survived by several cousins, and a close friend, Bill Pierson and his family, Larry and Paula Pierson and family of Carmi, and Stella Wolf and her family of Evansville, IN, who were like family to her and she to them.
She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and a sister, Juanita O'Brien.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at 11:00 am, at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until time of service. Interment will take place in North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wabash Christian Retirement Center Memory Unit.
A. Gail Halk
A. Gail Halk, age 100, of Carmi, passed away Friday, February 27, 2009, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center. She was born March 9, 1908, in Hartford City, IN, the daughter of Luther M. and Ethel (Johnson) Schmidt. She married S.V. Halk on October 9, 1938 in Wewoka, OK . She was a school teacher and taught in Washington Middle School, Jefferson Grade School and Big Prairie School for fourteen years. She graduated from high school in Sapulpa, OK. She graduated from the Oklahoma Baptist University in 1929, and attended the University of Chicago and Southern Illinois University, as well. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carmi.
Surviving are a brother, Leon Halk of Long View, WA; three nieces, Peggy Schmidt, Carolyn and her husband John Arnett, all of Louisville, KY, and Liz and her husband Larry McNown of Eldorado, KS; and four grandsons, James, Michael, Charles, and Jon Halk, all of Long View, WA.
Mrs. Halk is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Kermit Schmidt.
