J. T. Gwaltney
J.T. Gwaltney, 91 of Carmi, died on Sunday February 29, 2004 at 6:00 a.m. at the White County Medical Center-Skilled Care Unit. He was born May 31, 1912 at the family farm in Mill Shoals Township, the son of James and Josephine “Josie” (Funkhouser) Gwaltney. On October 15, 1945 he married Helen Darnell of Crossville. She preceded him in death on February 11, 2002.
J.T. was included in the eighth generation of Gwaltney’s living in America of Welsh ancestry. He was a retired farmer, grocery store owner/operator and public servant. He was active in Mill Shoals Township politics for many years, serving in five different positions, supervisor, clerk, assessor, auditor and trustee. Also, he was White County Treasurer for four years, and he served on the White County Board of Review for eight years. At the age of 47 in 1959, J.T. got his start in politics when some Democrat and Republican families in the Crossroads community asked him to be a candidate for Township Supervisor. He often said, “The people of Mill Shoals Township are good to me.” He never thought of the voters as Democrats or Republicans, but he considered the people his friends and neighbors.
For many years J.T. and his family lived in the Ashland and Crossroads community of Mill Shoals Township. He raised registered Hereford cattle and Hampshire hogs and showed the animals at county fairs throughout Southern Illinois. In the 1960’s J.T. purchased and operated the Funkhouser Grocery Store in Mill Shoals. In the 1970’s he purchased the Horste Market in Grayville and continued producing and selling the Horste German sausage and bologna each weekend.
J.T. was a member of the Mill Shoals Baptist Church, an din recent years he continued to attend the Mill Shoals area community worship services.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John Pyle of Carmi; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Brenda Seibert Gwaltney of Carmi; three grandchildren, Jay Pyle, Luke Pyle and Jonathan Gwaltney; and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; an infant daughter, Ruth Ann; a son Jimmie Dale, who was a science teacher and coach at Carmi-White County High School; and twelve brothers and sisters, Henry, Clarence, Julia, Rosetta, Franklin, Jennings, Lawrence, Paul, Emma, Lee, Earnest, and Marie.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday March 2, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Lyman Greer officiating. Burial will be in Burnt Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Monday March 1, 2004 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the White County Senior Citizens Center in Carmi, or to the physical therapy and activities department at the White County Medical Center, Skilled Care Unit.
Vickie Dawn Gwaltney
Vickie Dawn Gwaltney, 51 of Mill Shoals, died Thursday afternoon, July 8, 2004 at her home from complications arising from lung cancer. She was born November 8, 1952 in Englewood, CA, the daughter of Vernon and Betty (Willyard) Voeltz.
She was married to Ronald Gwaltney for 29 years and he survives.
Mrs. Gwaltney was a self-employed caterer and had owned and operated Sweet Impressions in Fairfield. She was a member of the Springerton American Legion Auxiliary #1126 and the Enfield Eastern Star.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald Gwaltney of Mill Shoals; a son Casey Gwaltney of Mill Shoals; two daughters, Laurie Stokes of Burnt Prairie and Corrie Randolph of North Carolina; her mother Betty Voeltz of Mill Shoals; a brother Jack Voeltz of California; two sisters, Claudia Miller of Arizona and Sandy Voeltz of Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Voeltz.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2004 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield. There will be no services. A private Burial will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southeastern Illinois or to the charity of one’s choice.
Bulah Fay Hendershott
Bulah Fay Hendershott, age 88 of Enfield, died Thursday afternoon January 29, 2004 at her home. She was born October 7, 1915 in Hamilton, Co the daughter of Jesse and Anna (Martin) Rockett, Sr. She married Dwight Lyman Hendershott in April of 1939 in Carmi, and he preceded her in death on January 17, 1978.
Mrs. Hendershott was a homemaker. She was a member of the RLDS Church in Springerton, and the Enfield Lions Club.
She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, James M. and Frieda Rockett of Enfield; four sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Evelyn Rose of Fairfield, Verna D. “Pat” Wood of O’Fallon, MO, Sarrah Maydell Barus and Delores Imogene and William Scott of Elmhurst; and a sister-in-law, Sharon Rockett of Carmi. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Jesse C. Rockett, Jr. and Curtis W. Rockett, and two sisters, Gladys L. McKnight and Charlene A. Scott.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday February 1, 2004 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Springerton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday January 31, 2004 at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Enfield Lions Club.
Effie A. Holleman
Effie A. Holleman, 87 of Carmi, died Thursday morning April 22, 2004 at the White County Medical Center in Carmi. She was born May 4, 1916 in Brownsville, AR, the daughter of Lawrence and Josephine (Wilson) Taylor. She married Woodrow Holleman and he preceded her in death.
Mrs. Holleman was a homemaker. She and her family had lived in East St. Louis, IL for many years prior to moving to Carmi in the 1970’s.
She is survived by two sons, Ray and Roy Holleman of Carmi; one sister, Cora M. Lindon of Crossville and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Burrell and Chester Taylor.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in White County Memorial Gardens.
Nina M. Lemon
Nina M. Lemon, 89, of Crossville, died Monday morning February 2, 2004 at the White County Medical Center. She was born December 7, 1914 in Seminole, OK, the daughter of Alva Eugene and Lizzie (Gist) Castor. She married Raymond F. “Rip” Lemon on March 3, 1934 in Seminole, OK. He preceded her in death on December 26, 1992.
Mrs. Lemon was a homemaker. She was a member of the Crossville Church of Christ.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald & Kathleen Lemon of Crossville and one daughter, Yvonna Carol Sullivan of Carmi; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters and one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday February 5, 2004 at the Crossville Church of with Burial in Stokes Chapel Cemetery.

Norma J. Little
Norma J. Little, age 72 of Carmi, died Saturday evening February 28, 2004 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN. She was born June 3, 1931 in Enfield, the daughter of William Oren and Amy (Buttery) Dixon. She married James E. Little, Sr. on May 3, 1952 in Carmi and he preceded her in death on September 2, 1983.
She was a homemaker and self-employed, having cleaned offices and homes in the area for 54 years.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Debra Little, Jr. of Crossville and one daughter, Dorothy L. Little also of Crossville; two grandchildren, Noah James Little and Ryan L. Holtzclaw. She was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in the Enfield Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Deaconess Foundation.
Wilma I. Hucker Hargett Ortiz
Wilma I. Hucker Hargett Ortiz, 87, of Sierra Vista, Arizona and formerly of Enfield, IL, died April 21, 2004 at the Life Care Center in Sierra Vista. She was born June 18, 1916 in rural Carmi, the daughter of Daniel Charles and Minnie Ann (Argo) Hucker. She married Edmund Hargett in 1936 and he preceded her in death in 1976. She then married Concepcion Ortiz in 1978 and he preceded her in death in 1980.
Mrs. Ortiz and her husband Edmund Hargett, lived in Enfield for 40 years until his death in 1976.During WWII they ran a gas station where Edmund was the mechanic and she ran the gas pumps. After the war they established their own garage in Enfield. During their 40 years of marriage Wilma helped in the garage as needed, worked as a cook in several nursing homes and as a short order cook in a restaurant. She and her husband were also very active in her church, which led all three of their children to attend Bible College. The two girls married ministers and their son chose to enter the secular field. After her husbands death Wilma relocated to Sierra Vista where her daughter Louella and son-in-law Lee minister with the First Christian Church. Wilma worked in a health food store and spent many hours volunteering at the Sierra Vista Community Hospital, the AARP the Senior Citizen’s Center and her church. Wilma always enjoyed being with her family.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Mary Hargett of Newnan, Georgia, two daughters and sons-in-law, Anna Mae and Jim Bogan of Fullerton, California and Louella and Lee Erwin of Sierra Vista, Arizona; nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Bloodworth of Great Bend, Kansas and Lela Pierce of Carmi, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two siblings.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at the Enfield Cemetery in Enfield. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2004 at Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield.
Cheryle Kay Rockett
Cheryle Kay Rockett, 57, of Maurice, LA, died Friday, May 14, 2004, in Lafayette, LA.
She was born May 8, 1947, in East St. Louis, IL, the daughter of Edgar Roy and Louise (Mueller) Goodwin. She married Dennis Ray Rockett in 1974 and he survives.
Other survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Daniel Topham of Berwick, LA; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry Ray and Robin Sullivan of Troy, IL, Bradley Roy and Rose Sullivan of Oceanside, CA, and James F. Rockett of Boonville, IN; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jim and Frieda Rockett of Enfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Karen Goodwin and a brother, Gerald Goodwin.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 17, 2004, at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield, IL with Burial at Hammack Cemetery, Springerton, IL. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Sunday, May 16, 2004 at the funeral home.
Lorene P. Sexton
Lorene P. Sexton, age 89 of Carmi, died Friday morning June 25, 2004 at her home. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was born August 12, 1914 in Spaulding, OK the daughter of Arthur and Josephine (Fowler) Lucas. She married Elmer L. Sexton on April 30, 1929 in Sasakwa, Oklahoma and he preceded her in death on May 9, 1987.
Mrs. Sexton retired from the Carmi school system after having worked as a cook for 52 years. She had attended Stewart Street Baptist Church for many years.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Darrel and Helen Sexton of Carmi and Kenny and Sandy Sexton of El Cajon, CA; three daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine Maier of Carmi, Chris and Allen Brandenstein of Carmi and Susie and Dean Gilbert of Decatur; a daughter-in-law, Jan Sexton of Carmi. She also raised a grandson, Gene Sexton of Enfield. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, twenty nine great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and five step great-great-grandchildren; two half sisters and one half brother and a sister-in-law also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer, two sons, Gerald and Leland; a son-in-law, Sug Maier, a grandson Rusty, two brothers and two half brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday June 27, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Burial in White County Memorial Garden. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday June 26, 2004 at the funeral home.
Nancy Stone
Nancy Stone, 97 of Carmi, died Friday morning July 9, 2004 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born April 19, 1907 in White County, the daughter of Charles E. and Bertha (Stanley) Jones. She married Orlie Stone on December 19, 1925 in Centerville and he preceded her in death on January 16, 1965.
Mrs. Stone was employed at Ainsbrooke before her retirement. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Centerville.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Sam & Louise Stone of Carmi and Donald & Carolyn of New Harmony; two brothers, Jim Jones of Murray, KY and Lewis Jones of Carmi; two sisters, Bessie Hunsinger and Grace Jones, both of Carmi; five grandchildren, Rick Stone, Debra Cullum, Scott Stone, Steve Stone and Shana Northcott and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Watkins, Maude Whiting and Mary Jones.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at the funeral home. Bobby Eugene Weedman
Bobby Eugene Weedman, age 69 of Carmi, formerly of Cicero, IL died Wednesday afternoon May 5, 2004 at the V.A. Medical Center at Marion. He was born December 12, 1935 in Maunie the son of Samuel George and Jessie (Erwin) Weedman.
Mr. Weedman had worked for a trucking company in Chicago. He was an U.S.
Army veteran of the
Korean War.
He is survived by one son, Jimmy Weedman of Cicero; two brothers and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Carol Weedman of Lamont, and William Weedman of CA; four sisters, Gertie Rhein of Carmi, Genevieve Raley of Henderson, KY, Clara Weedman of Chicago and Linda Brock of Chicago; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday May 7, 2004 at Kuykendall Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Cemetery. The Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
Carol E. Woodrow
Carol E. Woodrow, age 68 of Springerton died Saturday evening June 26, 2004 at the Enfield Healthcare Center. She was born April 4, 1936 in Springerton, the daughter of Allen Ray and Lorene (Foley) Puntney. She married Billy D. Woodrow on July 4, 1952 in Springerton and he preceded her in death on May 11, 2000.
Mrs. Woodrow was a nurse’s aid. She attended World Harvest Christian Center. She was a member of the Springerton American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her mother and step-father, Lorene & Allen Musgrave; one son and a daughter-in-law, Dennis & Teresa Woodrow of Springerton; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Shari Woodrow of Norris City, Patty & Richard Clark and Barbara & Clayton Nelson, all of Springerton; thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce & J.D. Hutchcraft of Carmi, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy; her father and one brother, Allen Ray Puntney, Jr.

Genevieve Fieber Bonn
Genevieve Fieber Bonn, 94 of Carmi, died Thursday evening July 29, 2004 at the White County Skilled Care Unit in Carmi. She was born April 11, 1910 in Crossville, IL, the daughter of Timothy B. and Evalee (Parsons) Fieber. She married Glenn Brown and they had a son Loy Lee. She later married Alfred Bonn in Evansville and lived there before relocating to Harlingen, TX in 1945. He preceded her in death in November 1978.
Mrs. Bonn was a homemaker. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her afternoon soap operas. She belonged to the Susana Canasta Club for many years. She was a past member of Phillipstown Methodist Church and also First Methodist Church of Harlingen, TX. One of her most memorable moments was when her husband, Alfred, was Mayor of Primera, TX and they met and visited with President Reagan. She moved back to Carmi in 2000 from Harlingen and lived in Wabash Heritage Apartments before entering the White County Medical Center Skilled Care Unit.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Loy Lee & Jackie C. Brown of Carmi; a grandson, Tim Brown of Carmi; a sister-in-law, Elouise (Green) Fieber; a nephew, Ray Franks; and a niece and her husband, Judith and Stan Cutchen. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Alfred Bonn; two brothers, Kempton and Junior Fieber and a sister, Marie Schmittler.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi. Visitation will be from 10 until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Grayville.
Audray “Aud” McKay
Audray “Aud” McKay, age 78 of Carmi died Wednesday morning August 25, 2004 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born January 6, 1926 in Burnt Prairie Township, the son of Charles Clarence and Cora Olive “Landingham” McKay. He married Virginia R. Carney on February 12, 1946 and she preceded him in death on November 5, 1993.
Mr. McKay was a heavy equipment operator for construction work; he also had worked in the oil field.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Debbie McKay of Richmond, IN; one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Mike Buckman of Carmi; five grandchildren, Rob Frymire, Lisa Martin, Suzanne Travelstead, Mindi Pretzsch and Jimmy McKay; eleven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Agnes Hawkins of Grayville, Zella Woods of Albion and Bessie Gates of Georgia. He was preceded in death by his son, Audray Martin McKay II; two brothers, John McKay and Charles McKay; and three sisters, Lula Wheatley, Cecil Kuykendall and Jessie Hite.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday August 30, 2004 at the Kittinger-Fair Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Mike Buckman officiating. Burial will be in Big Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday August 29, 2004 at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the VNA Hospice at Eldorado.
Thelma V. Hoegger
Thelma V. Hoegger, age 87 of Carmi, died Thursday morning, August 26, 2004, at the Meadowood Nursing Home in Grayville, IL. She was born May 18, 1917, in Flora, IL, the daughter of Clarence and Catherine (Spencer) Boyd. She married Paul Hoegger in 1942 in Rolla, MO, and he preceded her in death on December 19, 1988.
Mrs. Hoegger was a member of St. Polycarp Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild in Carmi. She had been employed at Art’s Grocery in Carmi.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-laws, Paulette and Roy Jackson of Grayville, IL, and Mary and Steve Riggio of DuQuoin, IL; three grandchildren, Keith Jackson, Matthew and Melanie Riggio, and Michael Riggio. She is also survived by her beloved pet dog “Bo”. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, James Boyd and Clarence “Buddy” Boyd; and three sisters, Josephine Harbin, Jean Hemphill, and Bonnie Ernest.
Visitation will be at St. Polycarp Catholic Church in Carmi on Saturday morning, August 28, 2004, beginning at 9:00 A.M. The funeral mass at the church will begin at 11:00 A.M. with Father Stephen Rudolphi officiating. Burial will be at the St. Polycarp Cemetery.

Everett Dale Hart
Everett Dale Hart, 84, passed away at his home in Mt. Vernon, IN, on Saturday, October 2, 2004. He was born in White Co. on December 16, 1919, the son of Thomas and Lula (Fields) Hart and was married to Agnes (Baker) Hart on October 3, 1963, in Ridgway, IL. Mr. Hart was a World War II
Army veteran and a retired locomotive engineer with L & N Railroad as well as a member of the Eagles and Moose Lodges. He was devoted to his family, an avid reader, loved gardening and being outdoors, and enjoyed eating out with family and friends.
Mr. Hart is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws: Victor and Paula Hart of Evansville, IN; Jim and Stacey Hart of Ft. Branch, IN; and Barry and Barbara Hart of Evansville, IN; two stepsons: John and his wife Belinda Hamilton of Henderson, KY, and Don Hamilton of Mt. Vernon, IN; three brothers and a sister-in-law: Glendel Hart and Jon Hart, both of Enfield, IL, and Thomas and Mary Hart of Leesburgh, VA; and fifteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother, Bill Hart.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at 3:00 P.M. at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield, IL. Visitation will be prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 A.M. Burial will be in the Enfield Cemetery with military rites performed by the combined Carmi VFW and Carmi American Legion Posts.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials to the American Cancer Society which may be made at the funeral home.
Clinton Leroy “Lee” Akers
Clinton Leroy “Lee” Akers, 88 of Fairfield died Saturday evening, July 24, 2004 at the Fairfield Memorial Hospital. He was born October 24, 1915 in White County, the son of George and Mary A. (Hays) Akers. He first married Mildred Dietz and she preceded him in death. He then married Ruby Mitchell on June 20, 1996 and she survives.
Mr. Akers was a Chef in New York City for 40 years. He served in India as a member of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of a Masonic Lodge while in New York. He belonged to the Fairfield Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby; a step-daughter and her husband, Jan and Tom Prince of Enfield; one step-granddaughter and her husband, Carmen and Kenny Rockett of Carmi; one step-grandson and his wife, Randy and Brenda Prince of Decatur; five step-great grandchildren; one sister, Martha Hamilton of Seattle, Washington; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by 9 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday July 28, 2004 at the Elledge Funeral Home in Enfield with Burial in Enfield Cemetery.
