William Ralph Brandon Jr.
CARBONDALE -- William Ralph Brandon Jr. , 83, of Carbondale, died at 7:13 p. m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at the VA Medical Center in Marion. Mr. Brandon was born on Feb. 24, 1921, in Carbondale, the son of William Ralph and Judith (Roy) Brandon. He married Doris M. Stanley on Oct. 17, 1942, in Cape Girardeau, and she survives. Mr. Brandon was an
Army veteran of World War II. Bill was a meat cutter in Carbondale for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Lakeland Baptist Church, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He is also survived by two sons, William of Troy and Scott of Murphysboro; four daughters, Karen Owens of Virden, and Nancy West, Susan Isaacson and Beth Brandon, all of Southern Illinois; 11 grandchildren; one foster grandchild; four great-grandchildren; and two foster great-grandchildren. In addition, Bill is survived by one brother, Kenneth 'Jack' Brandon of Oklahoma, and one sister, Doris Slonecker of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. Services will be at 10 a. m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, in Huffman-Harker Funeral Home in Carbondale, with Mr. Ken Lundstrom officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Gardens of Memory, with full military graveside rites conducted. Visitation for Mr. Brandon will be from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the funeral home. JOHNSTON CITY -- June E. Lecerf, 89, of Johnston City, passed away at 11:29 a. m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be held at 11 a. m. June was born on June 10, 1915, in Stoughton, Wis. , the daughter of Alfred and Hjordis (Jacobsen) Andresen. She married Albert P. Lecerf on June 19, 1937, in Williamson County. He preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1989. June was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Johnston City and was a homemaker. She and her husband owned and operated Andresen's Confectionary in Johnston City for 27 years. She is survived by two sons, Eugene 'Gene' Lecerf of Johnston City and Jack and wife Marianne Lecerf of Copley, Ohio; four grandchildren, Katie, Kristen, Kelsey and Aimee; one sister, Pearl Zanotti of Johnston City; two nieces, Darlynn Zanotti and Judith Zanotti; two nephews, Lyndell and wife Patti Zanotti and Mark Andresen; and several great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Alfred Andresen.

Marla Yvette Danielle Vaughn
MARION -- God summoned the angels to go and bring Marla home from this world of suffering and pain. As a new day was beginning, God decided that Marla's mission in this world was completed and that his servant's job was well done! Marla boarded that old ship of Zion, where she boarded the union with Vicki Marshall, Wilma McNeil, John Twitty, Geneva Schockley, Viola McNeal, Willie and Rose Ann Marshall, Bo Green, Darryl Green, Marlowe Marshall, and a host of angels, who welcomed her on board on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004. Services will be at 1 p. m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in Paul's Chapel Baptist Church, with the Revs. Norman Owens Jr. and Roger Holmes officiating. Burial will be in the Colp-Dewmaine Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a. m. Thursday at the church. Services are under the direction of the Jackson Funeral Home in Colp. Marla was born May 1, 1965, in Herrin, to Joe and Vicki (McNeal) Marshall. Marla grew up in the Colp-Dewmaine and Marion areas. She began attending Mount Olive Baptist Church early in life. She gave her life to Christ at an early age at Paul's Chapel Baptist Church. She loved her children and her family and friends. Marla was a very quiet and shy person, and silence sometimes is golden. Marla received her educational training in criminal justice, CNA classes and computer courses. The Department of Rehabilitation Services employed Marla as a caretaker for her brother, Joe Marshall Jr. She was also a substitute at Marion Junior High School as a noontime supervisor. Marla was employed over the years in a variety of domestic, factory and culinary positions. However, her true passion was helping others. Marla was united in holy matrimony to Charles Eugene Vaughn on July 9, 1982. She leaves to cherish fond memories her three sons, Marcus Eugene Marshall and beloved girlfriend Christina Cerniglia, Cedrick LeMar Marshall and Nawarrion Valentino-Asti Taylor II, all of Carbondale; one daughter, Phylicia Rashard Cole of Carbondale; her husband, Charles Eugene Vaughn of Huntsville, Ala.; her father, Joe L. Marshall Sr. of Carbondale; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Jewell and Tyree Neal of Carbondale and Jacqueline Williams of Chicago; four brothers and one sister-in-law, Joe Marshall Jr. of Marion, John and Shellie Marshall of Johnston City, and Brian and Paul Marshall, both of Marion; two great-aunts, Arber Della, who was 'like a third mother to me', and Jimmy Dale Marshall of Marion and Estella and Eugene Green of North Chicago; one great-uncle, Johnny Stover of Carbondale; 'also a man who has been like a father to me and he will always remain in our family as our dearest great-uncle,' James 'Uncle Jimmy' Kincaid Sr. of Colp, who raised like Marla's siblings her cousins Cousin 'Lady' Lolita and husband Billy Pickens and Jamie Johnson, all of Marion, and 'Peppy' James and wife Emily Kincaid of Columbus, Ohio; her close friends, Angela (Butler) Gibson of Danville, Donna Taylor and Linda Thompson, both of Marion, Herbie of Cairo, Donna Duncan, and Phillip Acree; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other close relatives and a number of special people she was privileged to have called friends. At the time of her passing, she was 39 years and 8 months old. She was preceded in death by her mother, Vicki Marshall; her maternal grandparents, Samuel and Wilma McNeil, Alice Stover, John Twitty, and Geneva Schockley; her paternal grandparents, Willie and Rose Ann Marshall; her great-great-grandmother, Viola McNeil; her nephew, Marlowe Marshall; and her two cousins, Bo and Darryl Green. Marla was a very loving person who loved the life out of her children and cherished her family. She had a passion for children and cooking out. Her quiet spirit and her sense of humor inspired many people during her journey on this side and will be missed. The family asks that you dedicate today and every day to spending quality time with your children, parents, friends and loved ones. Today and every day, make the time and cherish every moment.
The Rev. W. Arnold Ranta.
CHESTER -- The Rev. W. Arnold Ranta, 76, of Chester, passed away at 8:15 a. m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. He was born to John and Aurora (Aho) Ranta on July 13, 1928, in Poplar, Wis. , and was the ninth of 10 children. He married Dolores I. Myrick on Nov. 25, 1950, in Superior, Wis. , and she survives. He graduated in 1951 from Concordia Theological College in Springfield, and his first assignment was to pastor five congregations in Michigan and Wisconsin. In 1954 he accepted a call to serve a pastorate in Ontario made up of three congregations and four preaching stations. His next call was to Chesterland, Ohio, where he developed a church. He came to St. John Lutheran Church in Chester in the summer of 1967. He was the 10th minister at St. John Lutheran Church. In November 1981, he accepted a call from the Southern Illinois District Mission Board to serve as chaplain at the Chester Mental Health Center and provide services to the Psychiatric Center at the Menard Correctional Institution. He retired in 1993. During his ministry he served bilingual churches in the English and Finnish languages and has been active on various church boards, holding several offices. His pastorates have shown his special interests in youth and the aged. He also received a master of arts degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in counseling. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Chester and the Lutheran Men's League. He was also a member of the Chester Rotary Club, from which he received the Paul Harris Award. Survivors include his wife, Dolores Ranta of Chester; three children, William A. and Bonnie Ranta of Lake Nebagamon, Wis. , and Pamela and Donald Grubman and Kristian L. Ranta, all of Chester; one brother, David Ranta of San Diego; two grandchildren, Rachel and William Patrick Ranta; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, in St. John Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Mark Willig and Vicar David Kern officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery

Richard Dwain Bennett
THEBES -- Richard Dwain Bennett, 67, of Wheatfield, Ind. , formerly of Thebes, died suddenly on Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, in Porter Memorial Hospital. Mr. Bennett was on born July 8, 1937, in Thebes, the son of Richard Hugh and Zelva (Dunning) Bennett. On Aug. 24, 1957, he married Shirley Simpkins. He was a maintenance mechanic for Owens Corning Fiberglass of Valparaiso and for the Donaldson Corporation of Rensselaer. He retired in August 2003. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Bennett of Wheatfield; his mother, Zelva Bennett of Tamms; one son and daughter-in-law, Randy Dwain and Linda Bennett; one daughter and son-in-law, Marie Annette and Randall Pierce of Wheatfield; one sister and brother-in-law, Celeste Naomi and Thomas Mann of Tamms; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard (1988) and two sisters, Juanita Dowdy (2001) and Marilyn Bennet (2002). Visitation was from 3 to 8 p. m. Monday at the Boersma Funeral Home, located at 90 E. Grove St. in Wheatfield, Ind. Services will be at 10 a. m. today at the funeral home, with Pastor Gary Ownby officiating. Juanita Kelley
CARBONDALE -- Juanita E. Kelley, 92, of Carbondale, passed away at 2:45 a. m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Parkway Manor of Marion. Juanita was born on Jan. 21, 1912, in Johnston City, the daughter of Harvey and Elsie (Whittington) Zeigler. She married Arlie E. Kelley on Dec. 20, 1933, in Jonesboro, and he preceded her in death on March 4, 1989. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kaye Kelley of Carbondale; and one daughter and son-in-law, Wilma Kay and Jack Neal of Ellettsville, Ind.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Melvin Bandy of Herrin. Also surviving are five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; Kathy and husband Jim Booziotis, their children Kristy and Scott; Michael and wife Rhonda Kelley, their children Maggie, Michael, Mollie and Brian all of Carbondale; Kelley and husband Marty Hobbs, their daughter Lindsey; Kara and husband Mike Kalb, their children Justine, Cody and Ryan; Kris and husband Craig Cowden, their children deceased, Nicole and Matthew, all of Ellettsville and Spencer Ind. Juanita also had 15 nieces and nephews, plus their children, whom she loved watching grow up and spent much time with. Preceding her in death were her parents, Harvey and Elsie Zeigler; her husband, Arlie E. Kelley; brothers, Cecil and Harvey Zeigler; sisters, Wilma Jenne and Dorothy Stewart; and one granddaughter, Kim Owen, of Spencer, Ind. Juanita was a co-owner with her husband and son of Kelley's Big Star Super Market. She was an active member of Assembly of God Church, Home Extension and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Juanita was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She loved being with her family and living for the Lord. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Walker Funeral Home, with Rev. Danny Boyd officiating and burial in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p. m. Wednesday at the funeral home. COBDEN -- Donald Joe Smith, 69, of Cobden, died at 4:45 p. m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at home. He was born Oct. 20, 1934, in Cobden, the son of Herbert L. and Edith (Smith) Smith. He was married to Pat Whitney on March 12, 1966, in Cobden. Donald is survived by his wife, Pat, of Cobden; one sister, Juanita Williams of Anna; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Carl and Clara Smith of Elkville and Dennie Smith of Anna; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was a veteran of the U. S.
Army and was retired from the Choate Mental Health and Development Center and Heartland Harvest in Cobden. Services for Mr. Donald Joe Smith will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, in the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden, with the Rev. Gene Hart officiating. Interment will be in the Cobden Cemetery. Robert Armand St. Germain
ANNA -- Robert Armand St. Germain, 68, died of lung cancer, Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at home. He was preceded in death by his wife, three years ago. He was born on Jan. 27, 1936, in Manchester, N. H. , to Armand and Irene St. Germain, who also preceded him in death. Robert grew up in Concord, N. H. , and attended Sacred Heart School. He lived in New Hampshire most of his life before coming to Southern Illinois in 1992. Robert worked as an auto, tractor trailer and small engine mechanic and briefly taught auto mechanics at a New Hampshire vocational college. He worked for Patsy's GMC/Kenworth in Concord N. H.; Freeze Brothers Ford in Pittsfield N. H.; and Cambion/Midland Ross in Pittsfield, N. H. He retired in 1992. Robert served in the
Army National Guard; he was an avid hunter and hunter safety instructor. He was a Contoocook, N. H. , volunteer fireman, chapter member of the Suncook Valley Snowriders and the GWRRA in New Hampshire. He enjoyed snowmobiling and touring with his Honda Gold Wing. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Deanna St. Germain of Anna; his son, Norman and his wife, Mary St. Germain of Merrimack, N. H.; his brothers, Gerard St. Germain of Marietta, Ga. , Maurice and his wife Karen St. Germain of Bow, N. H. , Rheal and his wife Eunice St. Germain of Milton, N. H.; sister-in-law, Saralee Fellows of Warner, N. H.; brothers-in-law Ron and his wife Sarah Dalrymple of Loudon, N. H. and Dale Dalrymple of Middleton, N. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Barbara and husband Paul Waddell of Lascassas, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Paula Mathews and Jennifer Harrison of Lascassas; three great-grandsons and two great-great-grandchildren, all of Lascassas; one nephew, Larry and wife Dorothy Kanipe of Owensboro, Ky.; two nieces, Juanita Connley of Owensboro and Anna Kathryn and Bob Brown of Carterville; and two great-nephews and their families, Ron Brown and family of Carterville and Charles R. He was an avid camper, fisherman and woodworker. He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville. He was born on Friday, April 4, 1941, in Sparta, to Roscoe McSmith and Edna M. (Thompson) McSmith. He married Judith K. Bass Nov. 30, 1963, at Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Cheri and Stan Buchheit of Chester; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carla McSmith of Steeleville; four grandchildren, Ashley and Brandon Buchheit, Alli Bierman and Rayme McSmith; one brother and sister-in-law, Paul Dean and Yoko McSmith of Oklahoma City; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and Richard Cavalier of Sparta and Pat and Frank Cavalier of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Pat McSmith of St. Pete Beach, Fla. JOPPA -- Blair Garris, 16, of Joppa, died at 5:12 p. m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, in Massac County, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Services will be held at 1 p. m. She was president of the junior class, vice president of the FFA, a member of the Beta Club, and a member of the softball and basketball teams. She was also a member of the Poet Society. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Harold and Betty (Smith) Fry of Joppa; her father and stepmother, Tony and Yolanda Garris of Colonial Heights, Va.; two sisters, Hope and Tabitha Garris of Colonial Heights; four brothers, Kasey and Tony Garris of Colonial Heights, Gary Fry of Champaign, and Richard Fry of Oceanside, Calif.; her maternal grandmother, Betty Joyner of Metropolis; her maternal great-grandmother, Vollena Meyers of Metropolis; four aunts, Shelia Sharp of Joppa, Terra Derry of Metropolis, and Roxanne Harrison and Margaret Jones, both of Richman, Va.; and several cousins and second cousins. JONESBORO -- Collin Brimm, 78, of Oxford, Ark. , formerly of Jonesboro, passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, in Oxford. He was born on Nov. 2, 1925, in Union County, the son of Oziah Dee and Nettie (White) Brimm. He worked as a highway construction laborer for many years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Anna and was a member of the Jones/Lewis VFW post in Milbourne, Ark. Mr. Brimm served in the
Army during World War II and the
Korean War. He was first married to Florence Hubbs. He later married Wanda Lee Morgan Feb. 14, 1997, in Oxford, Ark. Survivors include his wife Wanda; three sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Maxine Brimm, Ron and Jean Brimm, all of Anna, William and Dehorah Brimm of Elgin; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dennis Long of Tamms; one stepdaughter and spouse, Shirley and John Hill of Elizabethtown, Ky.; two sisters, Lucille Baldwin of Murphysboro and Helen Stoner of Anna; five grandchildren; six step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and 11 step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, John M. Brimm, one stepson, James Rendleman, six brothers, Frank, Carl, Russell, Bill Roy and Vic Brimm and one sister; Betty Boyer. Services will be conducted at 10 a. m. Thursday, Oct. 7 in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with Tim Sadler officiating. Interment will be in Jonesboro Cemetery

AVA -- Irma Irene Schilling, 93, of Sullivan, formerly of Ava, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, in Illinois Masonic Home in Sullivan. Services will be at 1 p. m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Kent Eaton officiating. Burial will be in Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p. m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Ava. She was a retired elementary teacher. She graduated in 1941 with a bachelor's degree in education from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and taught elementary school in Ava and Alton. Mrs. Schilling was a member of the First Baptist Church in Woodriver. She was a member of the National Education Association. She was born on Thursday, Dec. 8, 1910, to Lewis Almer Whisler and Cynthia E. (Henson) Whisler, in Ava. She married Floyd Schilling on Dec. 4, 1948, at First Baptist Church in Alton. He passed away on April 10, 2004. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Dorothy Whisler of Alton; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, one infant son, one infant daughter, two brothers; Frank and Arthur and three sisters; Frieda Wright, Grace Garver and one infant sister.
