Carolyn Marie Greer
SWANWICK -- Carolyn Marie Greer, 87, of Swanwick passed away at 9:07 a. m. Sunday, June 27, 2004, in Pinckneyville Community Hospital. Carolyn was born in Du Quoin on April 1, 1917, the daughter of Charles E. and Otillie S. (Keiner) Bahre. She married Russel J. Greer on Sept. 18, 1935, in Du Quoin, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 1951. After the loss of her husband in a mining accident, Carolyn worked on the family farm to support her family. Later in life, she also worked as a certified dietician at various hospitals and nursing homes. Carolyn was also an avid quilter, making numerous quilts for people throughout the United States. She enjoyed quilting with various groups including those at the Perry County Jail Museum, the Swanwick Cemetery
Association and for her church, St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pinckneyville. At her church, she served on the Consistory, the Women's Guild, and taught Sunday School. She was a 4-H leader, an honorary member of the FFA, and was one of the presidents of the former Swanwick school board. She also served as the president of the Swanwick Party Line Phone Company and was active with the Swanwick Cemetery
Association. Survivors include one daughter, Jo Ann Parsell and husband, Ron, of Coulterville; three sons, Dale Greer and wife, Roberta, of Pinckneyville, Marian Greer and wife, Barbara, of Coulterville, and Charles Greer and wife, Mary, of Pinckneyville; one son-in-law, Bill Kocian of Swanwick; 26 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Janet Kocian, a brother, Charles Bahre, a sister, Ruth Ibendahl, a grandson, Ronald Parsell, and a granddaughter-in-law, LaVonda Parsell (wife of Lyman Parsell). Services will be at 10 a. m. Tuesday, June 29, 2004, in St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pinckneyville, with Rev. Howard Self officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p. m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a. m. Tuesday at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville. MARION -- Imogene L. Hurt, 80, of Johnston City, formerly of Crawfordville, Fla., passed away at 1:25 a. m. Sunday, July 4, 2004, at Paradise Manor in Marion. Imogene was born on May 30, 1924, in Lawrenceville, to Joseph Warren & Verna(Hensley) Robinson. She married Albert L. Hurt on Aug. 16, 1947, in Owensville, Ind. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1999. Mrs. Hurt was a homemaker and loved her family, especially her grandkids. Shewas an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Marion, where she was involved with the New Life Group. She was a member of the Marion Senior Citizens and enjoyed playing pinochle with her card group there. She loved to dance. She and Albert were members of a travelling square dance club in Florida. Imogene was a skilled bowler and was awarded numerous pins for 500 series. She also won ribbons for her quilt work. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Rhonda Hurt of Washougal, Wash., and Kenneth and Deborah Hurt of Marion; two grandchildren, David Hurt of Marion and Jennifer Levin and husband Dave of Benton; three great-grandchildren, Jamie Hurt of Marion, and Jake and Conner Levin of Benton; a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Robert Reed of Sturbridge, Mass.; and sister-in-law, Charlotte Robinson of Griffith, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother, James Robinson. Services will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Roger Russell officiating. Burial will follow in the Dillingham Cemetery

Jacqueline 'Jackie' Monroe
MARION -- Jacqueline 'Jackie' B. Monroe, 80, a lifetime resident of Marion, passed away at 8 p. m. Saturday, July 3, 2004, at home. She was born in Marion Dec. 18, 1923, the daughter of Fred W. and Miriam A. (Rose) Rott. Jackie, as she was known to many, was a graduate of Marion high school in 1941. She went on to attend Southern Illinois Normal University in Carbondale. She also attended Miss Hickey's Business School in St. Louis. Jackie became a member of First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ of Marion on Easter Sunday in 1932, and actively involved herself in the church ever since. She was a member of Christian Women's Fellowship, the Disciples Sunday School Class and formerly served as Deaconess of the church. One of her favorite scriptures she lived her life by was 'God causes all things to work together for good to those who love him, to those who are called according to his purpose. 'Jackie also was involved with Hearts Helping Hearts organization for many years. Charles W. Monroe was her high school sweetheart, and they were united in marriage on March 17, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas. This union created an inseparable pair, and both have lived their lives honoring each other with their trust, love and commitment. Together they have shared the last 60 years. Jackie began her working career with the Bank of Marion until 1963. She then joined her husband, Charles, at Monroe Cleaners. She has always been his partner in both life and business and continually worked with him at the cleaners from 1963 to thepresent. Jackie was a loving and caring wife and mother, encouraging her family in all their endeavors. She took special interest in her grandchildren, attending and supporting them in all of their activities. She is survived by her husband, Charles of Marion; daughter and son-in-law, Trina Kay and Daniel Edwards of Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Rita Monroe of Marion, and Randy and Becky Monroe of Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Brittney Lauren Edwards, Ethan Charles Edwards and Oliva Rose Edwards all of Marion, Eric Michael Monroe of Chandler, Ariz., Melissa Lynn Monroe of Palatine, Shannon Elizabeth Monroe, Ryan Fulkerson Monroe and Stephanie Louise Monroe of Mesa, Ariz.; and great-grand daughter, Riley Nicole Monroe of Mesa, Ariz. She has been preceded in death by her parents. Arrangements for Jacqueline Monroe have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home in Marion. The visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p. m. Naomi Ruth Owen
CARTERVILLE -- Naomi Ruth Owen, passed away at home at 1:20 p. m. Saturday, July 3, 2004, surrounded by family and friends. She was born Nov. 1, 1919, in a farmhouse in Carterville, to Charles Reps and Florence Adams Reps. Survivors include her husband, Frank W. Owen Sr. of Carbondale; daughter, Anne Strawn and husband Richard Strawn of Ignacio, Colo; daughter, Bonnie Owen and husband Michael Wright of Carbondale; son, Frank W. Owen, Jr. of Carbondale; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; one nephew, Donald Reps of Springfield. Her parents, brother and two sisters preceded her in death. She and Frank Owen were married Sept. 17, 1939, during the depression years and endured World War II. She was very active in making items for the military men and providing a 'Victory Garden' for her family. She and Frank met at Illinois Teachers College (SIU). They met at a Math Club where she supposedly winked at him first. Her life was spent loving her family and friends and working as the bookkeeper of the family business, Owen Bros. Heating and Air Conditioning Co. She also loved to travel and worked as a tour guide for Preseley Tours. She was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church of All Saints, Eastern Star and Beta Sigma Phi. Her last wishes were to be at home with her family and friends. She called it her 'Family Reunion. 'The graciousness of her pastor, Chris Repp; Members of Epiphany Lutheran Church of All Saints, Hospice; her doctor, Karen Strack and all the staff of Carbondale Memorial Hospital and prayers made it possible. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p. m. today at the Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale. The funeral service will be held at Epiphany Lutheran Church of All Saints in Carbondale. Burial will be in the Carterville City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Epiphany Lutheran Church of all Saints, or VNA Hospice Tip and will be accepted at the funeral home. Dixie has been a resident of the Hamilton County, Tenn., area for the past 25 years and was a very active member of Dallas Bay Baptist Church. She was a member of Creeks Bend Golf and Country Club and the Ladies Association. Dixie was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Snyder. She is survived by a son, Larry and his wife Terri Snyder; two grandchildren, Tiffany Gensemer and Andrianne and her husband, Brandon Abel. Services will be at 1 p. m. Elyvon Hafford Morehead
CAIRO -- Elyvon Hafford Morehead, 84, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Elyvon was born in Louisiana, Mo., Jan. 24, 1920, to John and Effa Mae (Johnson) Tucker. She married Glenn Hafford on July 4, 1940, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1966. She married Morris Morehead on April 16, 1971, and he survives. In addition to her husband, Elyvon is survived by two children; son, John Hafford and wife Maria, and daughter, Susan Hafford Brown and husband, Tom, all of Carterville; daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Hafford of Cary; two step-daughters, Morrissa Clanahan of Mound City and Ouida Haralambidis of Olive Branch; brother, John Tucker of Hampton, Va.; and sisters, Lois Nelms and husband, Carl, of Paducah, Avis Wirth of Houston, and Thelma Kearney of Sun City, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; one step-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. Elyvon was preceded in death by her brother, Glenn Tucker; and son, James Hafford. Visitation for Elyvon will be held from 5 to 8 p. m. today at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo. in Johnston City. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p. m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Harold was born on May 22, 1925, in Williamson County, the son of Charles and Janie (Cantrell) Hoffard. He married Jewell (Absher) on Aug. 12, 1961, in Johnston City. She survives. Harold was a retired janitor for GTE, where he worked for 22 years. He was a member of the Harmony Freewill Baptist Church in West Frankfort. Harold enjoyed spending time with his family, wife, children, and grandson. He is survived by one daughter, Melissa Howerton and husband Bruce of Johnston City; one son, Steve Hoffard and wife Mary of Johnston City; one grandson, Jerrod Hoffard; one brother, Clydell Hoffard and wife Louise of Johnston City; one sister, Elnora Clayton of Johnston City; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Louis and Margaret Absher of Herrin; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, brother-in-laws, and sister-in-laws.
Emma Louise Morehouse
CARBONDALE -- Emma Louise Morehouse, 92, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, in Cape Girardeau. Mrs. Morehouse was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Carbondale, to Wiley Shriver Brown and Mary Lucile (Spencer) Brown. She married David Wakeman Morehouse in 1932. He passed away in 1949. She was the recorder for the SIU Board of Trustees for 18 years until her retirement in 1976. She received her B. A. degree in liberal arts from SIUC. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Carbondale since 1922. Mrs. Morehouse was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship, a Life Member of the Jackson County Historical Society, Charter Member of the Richland County Historical and Genealogical Society, belonged to the Daniel H. Brush Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, SIU Carbondale Annuitants Association, and Past President of Carbondale Business and Professional Women's Club. Services will be at 10 a. m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Oakland Cemetery, with the Rev. Katherine Graves officiating. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or to the donor's choice. She is survived by her children, Tom Meskan of Ames, Iowa, and Lisa Meskan of Des Moines, Iowa; brothers and sisters, John and Lisa Evans of Des Moines, and Patricia Evans of Vienna; and stepson, Robert Wuest of Port Richey, Fla. METROPOLIS -- Elizabeth 'Mae' Kerley, 91, passed away at 3:30 p. m. Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the Southgate Health Care Center. She was born May 6, 1913, in Indiana. She was the daughter of Henry and Nellie (Dowden) Young. Mae was united in marriage to Avery Kerley on Dec. 23, 1931, in Flatwoods. He preceded her in death on March 3, 1977. Survivors include her six daughters, Frances Rohrer of Vienna, Mary Stone and her husband George of Granstburg, Dorothy Jones and her husband Jack of Metropolis, Kathy Walker and her husband Virgil of West Paducah, Jeanne McCall and her husband Bob of Buncombe, and Anita Ditterline and her husband Roger of Buncombe; four sons, James Kerley and his wife Leda of Simpson, Robert Kerley and his wife Pattie of Scappoose, Ore., Carlos Kerley and his wife Elly of Vienna and Kenneth Kerley and his wife Cheryl of the Flatwoods community; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mae was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Earl Kerley; a grandson, Jamie Kerley; a granddaughter, Tammy Sue Kerley; a great-grandson, Cody Wayne Kerley; and a great-great grandson, Sheldon Blake Kerley; a brother, Charles Walker. Mae was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. She was an accomplished quilter and hand made several quilts. Mae was a faithful member of the County Line Baptist Church in Flatwoods. She had been a volunteer worker in the vacation Bible school programs. Services will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at the County Line Baptist Church, with the Rev.
