CREAL SPRINGS -- Bruce Kenneth Derossett, 54, of Creal Springs, formerly of Cobden and Wolf Lake, died at 9:30 a. m. Saturday, June 12, 2004, at home. He was born Dec. 30, 1949, in Anna, the son of Everett Elmer and Violet Leona Allen Derossett. He is survived by his mother, Violet Derossett of Wolf Lake; his ex-wife, Monta Derossett of Creal Springs; one son, Kenneth Wayne Derossett of Grand Tower; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Connie Derossett of Wolf Lake; five stepchildren, Tina Lambing of Leesburg, Fla., Letha Schluterbush of Portland, Ore., Delaine Basler of Broadway, N. C., Karl Basler of New Burnside and Melinda Hartsock of Cobden; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Everett Elmer Derossett; and two brothers, Everett Allen Derossett and Wayne Derossett. He was a veteran of the Vietname War and was a member of the Anna VFW Post 3455. He was a mechanic and had worked as a deck hand on the river. Services were Tuesday at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna. The Rev. John Cripps officiated. Interment was in the Walker Hill Cemetery

Dean 'Dino' Northcutt
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS -- Dean Northcutt, 73, of Clearwater, Fla., and formerly of Southern Illinois, passed away at 1 p. m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at home. Dean was born in Marion, March 3, 1931, the son of Talcum and Alma (Padgett) Northcutt. Dean grew up in Zeigler, living there until entering the United States Navy in 1952 during the Korean conflict and was discharged in 1957. He later made his home in Wheeling, and moved to Clearwater in 1971. When he retired, Dean was the owner of a Laundry Leasing Service in Clearwater. While growing up in Zeigler he made many good friends, keeping in contact with them down through the years. He is survived by his mother, Alma Northcutt Fiscus of Clearwater; daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Gene Rimer of Clearwater; his companion, Lynnie (Kakouris) Richie of Clearwater; two granddaughters, Julie Halladay and Brandie Rimer both of Clearwater; one aunt, Marjorie Samay of Marion; and other family members and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his father; one son, Brent Northcutt; and one infant brother, Malcom Northcutt, Jr. Dean will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Services for Dean Northcutt will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Kenneth Kramer of Zion United Church of Christ officiating. Helen (Plott) Kimber
DONGOLA -- Helen (Plott) Kimber, 96, died at 3:35 p. m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at Union County Nursing Home in Anna. She was born on Sept. 24, 1907, at Balcom, the daughter of Harvey Augustus and Edna (Kimmel) Plott. She was married on June 5, 1932, to Frank Kimber. He preceded her in death on March 3, 1975. Helen was raised in the Balcom area and was baptized at Big Creek Baptist Church. After marrying Frank, she became a member of First Baptist Church in Dongola. She worked as a homemaker and assisted her husband in the operation of their family farm. She also worked as a nurses aid at Anna State Hospital. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, with memberships in the Egyptian Chapter and Anna Chapter. She was a past worthy matron of the Dongola Eastern Star, and a former member of Home Extension. Survivors include her son, Robert D. Kimber of Dongola, her daughter, Jacquie Eddleman of Dongola; sister, Elaine Rushing of Anna; and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Besides her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Mae Plott Simpson, and a brother, Donald David Plott. Services will be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday, June 22, at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola, with the Revs. David Plott and Paul Sadler officiating. Interment will be in the Anna Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. MURPHYSBORO -- Robert A. Swaar, 89, died at 3 p. m. on Friday, June 18,2004, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. He was born on Monday, March 22, 1915, in Murphysboro, the son of Loring Swaar and Myrtle Elenora (Wagner) Swarr Jarrett. Both preceded him in death. He was a retired truck driver for Bost Trucking. He served in the U. S.
Army during World War II. He Married Alma Mae Weil on Dec. 30, 1949. She died Dec. 28, 2000. He was a member of the Berean Christian Church in Murphysboro and the American Legion Post 127 in Murphysboro. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Mark Wingo officiating. Friends may call from 11 a. m. Monday until the hour of services at the funeral home. in Carterville. Sandra was born on June 17, 1937, in Williamson County, to Verna 'Vern' and Helen Auton Chamness. She married David Wagner on Nov. 16, 1988, in Rockville, Md. He passed away on Sept. 3, 1988. She is survived by her father, Vern Chamness of West Frankfort; five brothers, Victor Chamness of Evansville, Ind., Halley Chamness of Colorado Springs, Colo., David Chamness of Evansville, Ind., Steven Chamness of Wake City, Ark., and Randy Chamness of Blytheville, Ark. ; and aunt, Jewell Rains of Dupo. She was preceded in death by her mother and husband. Sandra worked as an art teacher in Illinois and Maryland for many years. She also worked as an interior designer for several furniture stores in Maryland. Riggin-Pillatsch Funeral Home in Carterville is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Miller Kobler
MARION -- M. Ruth Miller Kobler, 82, passed away suddenly at her home at 5 a. m. on Friday, June 18th, 2004. She was born on Sept. 1, 1921, in Creal Springs, the daughter of Harvey Bertrum 'Harv' and Lula Ann (Schafer) Riddle. Ruth, as she was known by, attended elementary school in Creal Springs, and later transferred to the Marion school system and was a graduate of Marion High School. She has been married twice during her lifetime. She was first united in marriage to George W. Miller on Feb. 14, 1942, in Jackson, Mo. Together they shared more than 50 years until his death on Oct. 19, 1992. Five years later, she was then united in marriage to Raymond Kobler on Feb. 22, 1997, in Marion, and together they have shared more than seven years. Early in her working career she was a beautician. She then furthered her education receiving her real estate broker license and became co-owner of Carl Harvel Real Estate Agency in Marion from the late 1950s until her retirement in 1970. After her retirement she and her first husband, George, moved to Florida in 1980. After his death in October 1992, Ruth returned to Marion in 1993. She has been a longtime member of the Marion First Baptist Church. Ruth also loved to travel, and has visited many places during her lifetime. Her family, though, was a very important part of her life. She always enjoyed the many times they all got together and her family will always cherish the many memories that were created. She is survived by her husband, Raymond of Marion; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Bob Reeves of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Becky and Mike Duckworth of Mill Shoals; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Robert Jackson and Beverly and Burkett Milner all of Marion; grandchildren, Brian Reeves and his wife, Sharon of Farmington, Mo. Kristi Blomberg and her husband Dale of Kinmundy, and Emily Smith and her husband Tim of Burnt Prairie; two great-grandchildren, Corrine and Evan Reeves of Farmington, Mo. ; step-grandchildren, Dawn Ellen Jackson of Marion, Darren Jackson and his wife Jonti of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Brent Milner and his wife Mimi of New York; two step-great-grandchildren, Ezekial Jackson of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Beck Milner of New York, and her brother, Charles Riddle of Lake City, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, George Miller; two brothers, John Alfred Riddle and William Harvey 'Bill' Riddle; five sisters, Caroline Louise Jarvis, Emma Gertrude Dunn, Lela Hamilton Albrecht, Marguerite Kathryn Jaynes and Aletha C. CHESTER -- Helen L. Gerdemann, 89, of Springfield, Mo., formerly of Chester, passed away at 6:50 p. m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Mo., after a short illness. She was born to the late Benjamin and Nora (Swicegood) Mason on Feb. 13, 1915, in Weaubleau, Mo. She married Herb Gerdemann on May 2, 1942, in Warrenton, Mo. He preceded her in death on March 25, 1972. She met Herb in Hermann, Mo., where he was the owner and editor of a weekly newspaper. They moved to Chester in 1956, as he accepted the position as the managing editor of the Herald Tribune. In 1961, he served as the Herrin editor for The Southern Illinoisan for two years. Helen received her bachelor of science in education from McKendree College in 1958. But her teaching career began long before that in Weaubleau and continued in Hermann in 1941. After 38 years of teaching, she retired in 1983 from the Chester Public School District where she taught fifth grade social studies. Her students will fondly remember the slide tours she shared with them after the many trips she made to Europe, India, Egypt, and South America. She continued as a substitute teacher in the district, and also worked as a tourguide for Presley Tours in Makanda from 1983 to 1990. She moved to Springfield, Mo., in 2001 to be close to her daughter, Lynn. In Springfield she continued her love of teaching by volunteering in a fifth grade social studies class. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chester, the United Methodist Women's Club, the Chester Women's Club, and was a past member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in Chester. She also belonged to the Chester Education Association, the Illinois Education Association and the National Education Association. She was an avid bridge player, playing a mean hand of bridge for more than 45 years in both a Ladies' Group as well as a Couple's Club, when Herb was alive. Survivors include one daughter, Lynn and her husband David Meinhard of Springfield, Mo., three grandchildren, Brook, Sabrina and Danielle Meinhardt; and three nephews, Richard, Keith and Gail Collins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Herb; and sister Verlie Collins in 2002. Services will be at 11 a. m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Chester, with the Rev. Marvin Bud Bennett officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery

GOREVILLE -- Evelyn May Levey, 91, passed away at 6:55 a. m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, in the home of her daughter, Roberta and Paul Forester at Lake of Egypt, Eagle Point Bay, in Goreville. Services were at 11 a. m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Mitchell- Hughes Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Arthur Donely officiating. Visitation was from 5 to 9 p. m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at the funeral home. It was Evelyn's wish to be cremated. For those who prefer, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Evelyn was born May 5, 1913, in Chicago, to Frederick and Elizabeth Krach. She married William H. 'Harry' Levey on Sept. 4, 1928, in West Chicago, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 1, 1986. Evelyn and Harry lived in West Chicago. When Evelyn retired from working as the head of the cafeteria at the junior high school in West Chicago in 1967, they moved to Florida. Evelyn enjoyed her family and many friends, traveling throughout her active life until illness brought her to live with her daughter, Roberta, in Goreville. She went with them to Arizona for the winters until she decided to stay there. Illness again moved her in with her daughter, Dolly, in Sun City, Ariz., and then back to Goreville. Survivors include daughter, Dolly McKamey and husband, Don of Sun City; twins, Robert Levey and wife, Barbara of Russellville, Ark., and Roberta Forester and husband, Paul of Goreville; six grandchildren, Steve McKamey and wife Syndi of Peoria, Ariz., David McKamey of Phoenix, Vicky Davis of Redfield, Kan., Robin Turnipseed and husband, Brian of Grandbury, Texas, Robert Levey and wife, Sheri of Springtown, Texas, and Paul Forester II and wife, Mary Sue of Sandwich; 21 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, loving granddaughter, Paula Renee' Forester Wilde, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence and Harold Hansler and Hazel and Ed Gross, two nieces, Lila Deiz and Lois Williams, dear friend, Lynn Tripp, and in-laws, Alfred Levey, Ken and Noreen Levey, Frances Levey and Pete Armbrust. 'Evelyn was a kind and loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed greatly and will always be in our thoughts and in our hearts with precious memories. We thank God for her wonderful life and for having us share that with her and for taking her so peacefully into her everlasting life with Jesus Christ our Lord.'
Bobbye Irvin Sloan
MCLEANSBORO -- Bobbye Irvin Sloan, 61, of McLeansboro and Salt Lake City lost her brave battle against pancreatic cancer Friday, June 18, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville, Ind. She was the daughter of the late Robert K. Irvin and the late Lois (Troutt) Schwarz. Bobbye was a 1960 graduate of McLeansboro Township High School and received a registered nursing degree from Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis in 1963. Bobbye is survived by her husband of 41 years, Jerry Sloan; daughters, Kathy and husband Todd Wood of Omaha, Neb., and Holly and husband Tim Parrish of Crystal Lake ; son, Dr. Brian and wife Leslie Sloan of Indianapolis; grandchildren: Madison, Adam, Collin, and Brendan Wood; Grant, Megan, and Benjamin Sloan, and Jordan Parrish; sister and brother-in-law, Jody and Tom Jones of Franklin, Tenn. ; and many loving nieces and nephews. Bobbye held a special place in her heart for the Utah Wildlife Rehabilitation Association, the Humane Society, as well as Dolan Lake near McLeansboro. Working as an avid crusader against breast cancer, Bobbye appeared on Oprah, ESPN, NBC, and in McCall's Magazine, urging women to take charge of their health and learn the importance of early detection. She relentlessly publicized the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Race for the Curein Salt Lake City and Evansville. At the inaugural Evansville Race, she served as survivor chair in 1998 and as honorary chair in 1999 and 2000. She served as honorary chair of the Salt Lake City Race in 1999. In addition, she walked in the National Race for the Cure in Washington, D. C. in 1999. Bobbye was chosen by Zeta Tau Alpha National Fraternity, for her work with the Komen Foundation, as their special initiate at their convention in 2000. Friends and family are invited to the Memorial Celebration of the Life of Bobbye Sloan, beginning at 3 p. m. Saturday, June 26, 2004 at the Hamilton County Senior High School in McLeansboro. Phelps of Makanda; one son, John Spencer 'Jay' Phelps, II of Atlanta; one daughter, Mary Jane Phelps of Atlanta; her parents, Earl and Emma Tally of Carbondale; two brothers, James Earl Tally of Atlanta, and William Joseph Tally of Carbondale; one sister, Emma Jean Durr of Carbondale, Jane was preceded in death by one sister, Jerrie Ruth Tally Gerdes. Mrs. Phelps was a member of First United Methodist Church, Carbondale where she was a Stephen Minister. She was also a member of PEO. ; Beta Sigma Phi; Alpha Gamma Delta; and the Carbondale Community High School Foundation where she served as secretary. Jane graduated from SIUC with a bachelors degree. She taught kindergarten for six years before joining her husband in his orthodontic practice. Jane worked side by side with her husband, Dr. John Phelps as an orthodontic assistant, a job she had for 30 years. Janie was a committed community volunteer with a love for teaching others. She was an avid sports fan enthusiastically cheering on the SIU Salukis, St. Louis Cardinals and Rams. Janie had an interest in all the arts especially quilting. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. Throughout her illness her faith never wavered.

He served in the U. S. Air Force. He retired in 1990 from the U. S. Department of Defense in New Cumberland, Pa. He was a member of Flagler County Sheriff's Department COPS (Citizens Observer Patrol) and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed reading, sports, gardening, his grandchildren and his activity volunteering with COPS. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Susan Crowell; his children, Steven D. (Candice) Crowell, Daniel S. (Pamela) Crowell and Kimberly S. (Jay) Crone, all of Mechanicsburg, Pa. ; his children by marriage, Harold (Pam) Varvel of Brooksville, Fla., Debra (Steven) Wilson of St. Charles, Mo., Patricia E. Hnatuck and Walter D. Hnatuck, both of Harrisburg, Pa. ; a brother, Sam (Linda) Crowell of Lady Lake, Fla. ; two sisters, Beverly (Gene) Barrett and Sheila Black, both of Carbondale; seven grandchildren, Brandon Crone, Dylan Crone, Stacy Forrester, David Sadowski, Joshua Varvel, Kristi Varvel and Aaron Varvel; and one great-grandson, Derik Sadowski.
Edmund Douglas
CHRISTOPHER -- Edmund 'Tootie' Douglas, 77, died at 8:20 p. m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at home. There will be no services. Mr. Douglas wished to be cremated. Burial will be at a later date. Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher is directing. Mr. Douglas was born Jan. 10, 1927, in Christopher, the son of Lee Arthur and Hallie (Booth) Douglas. He married Shirley Jenkins. She survives. He was a veteran of the Navy during World War II. He was the owner and operator of Douglas Jewelry.
Clarence E. Ward
ENERGY -- Clarence E. Ward,70, died at 4 a. m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at home. Clarence was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Herrin, to James Clarence and Edith Odessa (Sellars) Ward. He married Sarah Loretta (Kinley) on March 29, 1952, in Pochahontas, Ark. He was a retired Illinois State Police trooper, where he was employed from 1965 to 1989. He also was director of security at Illinois Centre mall in Marion from 1991 to 2000. He worked at South Side Lumber Yard in the early 1950s. He was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Marion and F. O. P. Troopers Lodge 41. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Lorretta Ward of Energy; daughter and son-in- law, Deborah and Roy Jack of Energy; granddaughter and husband, Charity and Rob Finley of Lombard; grandson, Caleb Hodges of Centralia; mother, Edith Odessa Ward of Energy; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Linda Ward of Thompsonville; and sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Bob Ellery of Energy.
