Lettie L. Gregory
DU QUOIN -- Lettie L. Gregory, 70, of Du Quoin, passed away at 9:06 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at home. Lettie was born on April 12, 1934, in Du Quoin, the daughter of Edward and Martha C. (Plumlee) Stanhouse. She married Clifford M. Gregory Sr. on June 21, 1952, in Piggott, Ark., and he survives. Lettie was a member of the First Christian Church in Du Quoin, where she was active with the Women's Fellowship Group. She was an avid fishermen and enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She is survived by husband, Clifford; four sons, Clifford Gregory, Jr. and wife Doris of Du Quoin, Rex Gregory and wife Urai of Du Quoin, Randy Gregory and wife Jaci of Tamaroa, and Mark Gregory and wife Paige of Sunfield; two daughters, Tammy Foster and husband Danny of Du Quoin, and Stacey Arnett and husband Terry of Dowell, one brother, William O. Stanhouse and wife Opal of Du Quoin, three sisters, Ruth Degler of Du Quoin, Frances Hawkins and husband Milton Charles of Sparta, and Cecil Szczeblewski and husband Joe of Du Quoin, two sisters-in-law, Shirley Harland of Coello, and Dorothy Jump of Du Quoin; 15 grandchildren, Patricia and Brian Winters, Jon M. Gregory, Diana and Anthony Howell, Joshua P. Gregory, Avery Arnett, Nolan Gregory, Gregory Arnett, Landry Arnett, Katelyn Gregory, Kylie Gregory, Kendra Gregory, Alison and Joe Borowski, Kari Foster, Amber and Josh Cranford, and Ryan Foster; five great-grandchildren, Morgan Winters, Connor Borowski, Brian Winters, Jr., Korbin Cranford, and Makenzie Howell. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Edward Stanhouse, and four sisters, Dorothy Stanhouse, Gertrude Braml, Lorraine Sisney, and Bobbie Engert. Services will be held at the Pyatt-Harrawood & Epplin Funeral Home in Du Quoin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, with Dr. John Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery

Louie Hanks
MARION -- Louie D. Hanks, 91, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord at 12:20 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, in Benton Healthcare Center. Louie was born April 21, 1913, in Marion, to Oscar and Emma (Reese) Hanks. He married Ruth McDannel on Aug. 15, 1936, in Benton. After 50 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 1986. Mr. Hanks was retired from Elgin State Hospital where he was employed as an attendant. He formerly worked as a miner at area coal mines. He was a member of New Dennison Baptist Church of Marion. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Elmer Smith of West City; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Wayne Hanks of Knoxville, Tenn., and Charles D. and Sharon Hanks of Elgin; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Sophia Faulkner of Mascoutah and Alberta Hill and Loudene Dial, both of Marion. His parents, his wife, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. The Revs. Gordon Lantrip and Bill Kopas will officiate. Burial will follow at Hanks Cemetery

CARBONDALE -- Nina I. Hoffman, 93, of Carbondale, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with the Rev. John Annable officiating. Interment will be held in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, Murphysboro. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today, Sept. 21, 2004, at the funeral home. Nina was born on Aug. 21, 1911, in Hellertown, Penn., the daughter of Herbert Samuel and Meda Minerva (Balliet) Kressler. She married Paul M. Hoffman on July 8, 1933. He preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Paul R. Hoffman; one grandson, Richard P. Kipping; one sister, Florence Angstadt; and two brothers, Harold and Howard Kressler. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Nancy L. Hoffman of Carbondale, and Patricia and Rick Kipping of Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter-in-law, Gwen Hoffman of Delwood; two grandsons, Jeffrey (Darlene) Hoffman of Columbia, Mo., and David Kipping of Mesa, Ariz.; two great- grandchildren, Breanna and Dreston Hoffman of Annapolis, Mo., one granddaughter-in-law, Lynette Richmond of Vulcan, Mo.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Herbert (Venus) Kressler of Emmaus, Pa., Montford (Esther) Kressler of Spring Hill, Fla., and Kenneth Kressler of Loveland, Colo.; one sister, Sylvia (George) Mease of Kintnersville, Pa.; and one brother-in-law, Walter Hoffman of Crystal River, Fla. Mrs. Hoffman graduated as a practical nurse and did private duty care for some time. She had been very active in the First United Methodist Church, Carbondale, her church home for over 50 years. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for many years. Her major focus was her family and her home.
Marguerite (Rocassi) Maxton
HURST -- Marguerite (Rocassi) Maxton, 86, died at 12 p.m. Sept. 19, 2004, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 21, 2004, in Blairsville Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to Hurst Ambulance Service, American Parkinson Disease Association, Box 8111, 660 South Euclid Avenue St. Louis, Mo. 63110. She was a registered nurse at the Ordinance Plant in World War II, UMWA Miners Hospital in West Frankfort, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and a recovery room nurse in Herrin Hospital. She was born on Dec. 1, 1917, in Hurst, the daughter of Genoeffa (Spagnoli) and James Rocassi. She married William M. Maxton Jr. Dec. 26, 1942, in Perryville, Mo. He preceded her in death April 18, 1993. Survivors include daughters, granddaughters and sons-in-law, Mae L. And Norman Hanna of Hurst, Kara Hanna of Hilton Head, S. C., and Donna S. and Leroy Newton of Carterville; sisters, Eva Mae and Lee Townes of Cape Girardeau and Louise Dunlap of Du Quoin; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, stepmother, Pauline Rocassi; husband and sister, Mary Fegley. Marguerite's family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Pramote whose compassionate concern and medical expertise allowed them to keep her with them many more year than anyone deemed possible. Also a special thanks to caregivers, Vera, Patty and Evelyn.

CAMBRIA -- Thomas Elmer Woods, 86, of Cambria, formerly of Carbondale and Bush, passed away at 3:51 p. m., Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro. He married Jewell F. Nannie on Nov. 21, 1980, in Elkville. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2003. He is also preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Thomas Woods; one great-grandson, Josh Potter; one brother, Walter Woods; and one sister, Ruby Stocks. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Brenda Woods of Cambria; one daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Kenneth Potter of Cambria; his grandchildren, Richard and Misty Potter, Kenneth Potter, and April Woods, all of Cambria, John and Rhonda Woods of Marion, Teresa and Andrew Beltz of Harrisburg, and Katherine and Greg Powell of Wolf Lake; 14 great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews, Shirley Rae and Fred Keppner of Harrisburg, William Walter and Billie Woods of Murphysboro, Larry Dean and Wanda Woods of Crab Orchard, James Edward and Sandy Woods of Hermitage, Tenn., Margaret Ann Jarvis of Carterville, Sharon Kay and David Welch of Cambria, and James Wayne and Carol Stocks of St. Louis. Thomas was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Cambria and a 55-year member of the Labors Local No. 773 of Marion. He served during World War II in the U. S.

Laura Lou 'Lootie' Adcock
CARTERVILLE -- Laura Lou 'Lootie' Adcock, 68, of Clinton, died at 12:50 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Dr. John Warner Hospital in Clinton. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Clinton, the Little Gallery Christian Assembly or the Jack Miller Center for Peripheral Neuropathy at the University of Chicago. Mrs. Adcock was member of the First Christian Church, the Lord Let Ladies Class of the Church and was a Sunday School teacher at the church. She was past president of Clinton School Board; and past president of Dr. John Warner Hospital Board. She was the first female manager of the driver license office for the state of Illinois. She was the former chairman for the DeWitt County Democrat Party. She was a member of B. P. W. She was the former chairman of DeWitt County Cancer Fund. She served as chief deputy to circuit office. She was born on Sept. 12, 1936, in DeWitt County, to Leonard Newberry and Nannie Maltby. She married Robert L. Adcock March 31, 1954, in Clinton and he survives. Other survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nanette and Jim Strange of Carterville and Brenda and Jerry Blatner of Naperville; one son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Deb Adcock of Pontiac; grandchildren, Josh Strange, England, Jamee Strange, St. Louis, Adam Blatner, Naperville, Alex Andrew Adcock and Aaron Adcock, Pontiac; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Ed Norfleet of Montecello. She was preceded in death by her parents.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jean Yvonne Bender
WABASH -- Jean Yvonne Bender, 76, of Wabash, Ind. died at 9:55 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at Miller's Merry Manor West in Wabash. She was born Dec. 19, 1927, in Cleaton, Ky., to Adrain J. Maxwell and Anna Green. She married Darrell D. Bender in Albion, June 10, 1947, and moved to Wabash in 1969, from Danville. She worked 23 years for Wabash Electric Supply as office manager and treasurer, retiring in 1993. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church. She volunteered at the Wabash County Hospital, the Blood Mobile and Heartland Vocational School. Her past memberships include Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Business and Professional Women, Republican Women's Club, Wabash Personnel Association, Woman's Clubhouse Association and served on the Indiana Credit Association Board of Directors. She is survived by her husband, Darrell D. Bender of Wabash, Ind.; son, Darrell Eugene (Elizabeth) Bender of Fort Wayne, Ind.; sister, Dorothy (Ron) Lindsey of Wabash, Ind.; two stepsister, Geraldine Hambley of Elmhurst, Cecil Young of Grayville; four grandsons, Kyle (Crystal) Siegfred of Bedford, Ind., Brian (Stephanie) Siegfred of Kokomo, Ind., Forest Bender of Wabash, Ind., and Drew Bender of Wabash, Ind.; three step-grandchildren, Robyn Bednar of Atlanta, Jordan Bednar of Austin, Texas, and Kyle Kimbrough of Austin, Texas; great-grandson, Keegan Siegfred of Bedford, Ind. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Pam Brauneller, two sisters and one stepbrother. COBDEN -- Ruby C. Acklin Palmer, 75, of Bowling Green, Fla., formerly of Cobden, died at 6:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at home near Tunnel Hill. She was born April 21, 1929, in Crainville, the daughter of Martin and Stella (Yates) Spiller. She married Stanley P. Acklin on Oct. 1, 1948, in Cobden. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1994. She later married Thomas G. Palmer on Feb. 22, 1998, in Wauchula, Fla. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bowling Green. She is survived by her husband, Tom Palmer of Bowling Green; one daughter, Jane E. Baggott of Cheboygan, Mich.; two stepchildren, Jerry Palmer of Tulsa, Okla., and Carole Lewis of Jackson, Mich.; four grandchildren, Julie Butler of Anna, Jake Baggott of Cobden, Dan Baggott of Ogden and Sara Nimmo of Bourbonnais; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, George Spiller of Fort Meade, Fla.; one sister, Wanda Harbaugh of Sarasota, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She married Andrew Cunningham who preceded her in death. She later married Edward Rains who preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 1971. Lillian was a homemaker and a Protestant. She is survived by three daughters, Joyce Westbay of Phoenix, Margarette F. Waldrop and husband Ralph J. of Tuscola, and Carol Sue Cox and husband the Rev. Paul of Springfield; one son, Richard Rains of Aurora; 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Claude Harrison of Seattle, Wash., and George Harrison of Bristol, Tenn.; and one sister, Nancy Traub of South Elgin. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, and eight brothers.
Daisy Irene (Darr) Page
BENTON -- Daisy Irene (Darr) Page, 87, of Benton, formerly of Whittington, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, in Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. She was born Dec. 4, 1916, in Whittington, the daughter of Willie and Ida Darr. She married William Byford Page on May 29, 1937, in Whittington. They were married 56 years. She is survived by two daughters, Delores Walker of Benton and Patricia Page of Sesser; one son and daughter-in-law, James L. and Kathy Page of Benton; seven granddaughters, Rhonda Gordon, Dana Summers, Sheila Huffine, Robin Blake, Tracy Hall, Marsha Tope and Susan Miller; one grandson, Michael Lang; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wm. Byford Page on June 26, 1993; four brothers, Curtis, Clyde, Arthur and John Darr; and one great-grandson, Steven Huffine. Daisy was a member of the East Benton Baptist Church and a former member of Williams Chapel Church of Ewing and Whittington Baptist Church of Whittington. She enjoyed flower gardening, fellowship with family members and friends, planning and participating in traveling activities, church worship and gospel singing, and country music. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Johnston Funeral Home in Whittington, with the Rev. Jim Cooper and Brother Joe Arview officiating. Johnie Harold Prim
MOUNDS -- Johnie Harold Prim, 88, of the Poplar Bluff area, formerly of Mounds, died at 5:20 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, in the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Mr. Prim was born on May 3, 1916, in Mounds, the son of the late John Prim and Gertrude (Williams) Prim. Mr. Prim was a printer. He had lived 50 years and moved to Poplar Bluff in 1972, where he resided until his death Sunday evening. Mr. Prim was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mounds. He married Dorothy Wilson on Jan. 28, 1935, in Mounds. Mr. Prim was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Prim, on July 24, 1991; one son, Harold E. Prim, in 1997; one infant son; one brother, Von Prim; and three sisters, Lucille Calvin, Gwendolyn McClure and Gladys Slaughter. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Sandy Prim of Mounds; her companion and close friend, Phyllis Cookson of Broseley; one sister, Maxine Crippen of Gilbert, Ariz.; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Services for Johnie Harold Prim will be at 1:30 p.m. today in the Beechwood Cemetery
