LOMBARD -- Martha E. (Barelay) Roberts, 83 died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at her home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge, with the Rev. Kelly Cox officiating. There will be no local visitation.
Geneva (Davie) Wiggs
WOLF LAKE -- Geneva (Davie) Wiggs, 87, of Wolf Lake, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was born Sept. 14, 1917, near Ware, the daughter of W. W. 'Dick' and Fannie (Verble) Davie. She married Floyd W. 'Cotton' Wiggs on Sept. 26, 1936, in Jonesboro. Geneva was a photographer for 50 years. She owned and operated Wiggs Studio in Jonesboro. She photographed Union County schools, Khoury League, weddings and reunions. She was a lifelong member of Professional Photographers of America. She was a local historian of Union County, being a direct descendant of Winstead and Anna Davie. She collected numerous photos and articles on the family history. During her retirement, she loved caning walnut chairs and enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Nancy Hunter Chapter DAR in Cape Girardeau, the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century and the Antique Club of Southern Illinois. She was also a member of Salem Lutheran Church. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jane Sullivan of St. Louis and Billie Kaye Hamlin of Jonesboro; two grandchildren, Marcy Hileman of Wolf Lake and Tyler Hamlin of St. Louis; and the love of her life, two great-grandchildren, Alexa and Chase Hileman. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Bill L. Davie. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in the chapel of Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Eidson officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

MARION -- Willie Carter, 78, died at 6:50 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in the First Apostolic Church in Marion, with the Revs. R. G. Walls and James Johnson officiating. H. N. 'Bill' Lewis
HIGH POINT, N. C. -- H. N. 'Bill' Lewis, 66 of High Point, N. C., formerly of Herrin, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at High Point Regional Cancer Center. He was born Jan. 5, 1938, in Herrin, a son of Norman Lewis and Peggy Lewis. He was raised by his grandparents Troy and Grace Lewis. He was in the U. S.
Army Reserve as a chief warrant officer (W3). Mr. Lewis worked for 35 years with the U. S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1992, and then he was employed part-time with Spivey's Nursery. He was a member of Green Street Baptist Church and the Bob Cooke Sunday school class. On March 27, 1959, he married Betsy Williams who survives of the home. Also surviving is a daughter, Beth Spivey and husband, Shanon of High Point, N. C.; a half sister, Toni Foster of Montrose, Colo.; two grandsons, Taylor Lewis Spivey and Lucas William Spivey. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at Green Street Baptist Church by Dr. Charles H. Chandler and Dr. Alan Cox. Burial will be in Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery. CARTERVILLE -- Laura Lou 'Lootie' Adcock, 68, of Clinton, died at 12:50 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Dr. John Warner Hospital in Clinton. Mrs. Adcock was member of the First Christian Church and the Lord Let Ladies Class of the Church, and was a Sunday School teacher at the church. She was past president of Clinton School Board and past president of Dr. John Warner Hospital Board. She was the first female manager of the driver's license office for the state of Illinois. She was the former chairman for the DeWitt County Democrat Party. She was a member of BPW. She was the former chairman of DeWitt County Cancer Fund. She served as chief deputy to the circuit office. She was born on Sept. 12, 1936, in DeWitt County, to Leonard Newberry and Nannie Maltby. She married Robert Adcock on March 31, 1954, in Clinton, and he survives. Other survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nanette and Jim Strange of Carterville and Brenda and Jerry Blattner of Naperville; one son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Deb Adcock of Pontiac; grandchildren, Josh Strange of U. S. Air Force, RAF, Milden Hall, UK, Jamee Strange of St. Louis, Adam Blattner of Naperville, and Alex Andrew Adcock and Aaron Adcock of Pontiac; and one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Ed Norfleet of Montecello. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She married Stan Richardt. Then she married George Thomas Mitchell. He preceded her in death in 1987. She is also preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, William C. 'Bill' and Julie Richardt of Charlotte, N. C.; three grandchildren, Ashlie Herndon, Shannon Richardt and Billy Richardt, all of Charlotte; two great-grandchildren, Michelle and Nathan Herndon; one stepdaughter, Jan O'Halloran of Wichita, Kan.; four step-grandchildren, Angela, Jamie, Jessica and Ashley Klouse; and one stepgreat-granddaughter, Aubrie Klouse. Dorothy was a Presbyterian. She was the first lady member of the Elks Lodge in Carbondale. She served her country with the U. S. Navy during World War II and the
Korean War and was discharged with the rank of Radioman 2nd Class. She had been employed as a loan officer at First Bank in Carbondale. Jacob Malkin
MURPHYSBORO -- Jacob K. Malkin, 86, of Murphysboro, formerly of Brookline, Mass., died at 7:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at home. He was born on Sept. 19, 1918, in Revere, Mass., the son of Irving and Anna (Helfant) Malkin. He married Charlotte Slesinger, and she died in 2001. Jacob was a broker for the General Insurance Company. He was a major in the U. S.
Army. He served in the Philippines and Australia. He graduated from University of Alabama. He is survived by his daughters, Marjorie (Tim Brossart) Malkin of Makanda and Elaine Malkin (Gail Lipfert) of Canaan, Mass.; two grandsons, Daniel J. Klotz and Jace Brossart; his twin brother, Moses Malkin of Martha's Vineyard, Mass.; and his brother, Eli Malkin of Boynton Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Services will be Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, in Levine Chapel in Brookline, with Rabbi Pollock officiating. Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel is in charge of the local arrangements.

Stella May (Holmes) Walters
WEST FRANKFORT -- Stella Walters, 93, of West Frankfort, died in her sleep early Tuesday morning, Sept. 21, 2004, at home. She was born on Oct. 11, 1910, to Luther Bartlett and Mary Rosalind (Kizer) Holmes near Luxora, Ark. She married her high school sweetheart, Thomas 'Leroy' Walters, on April 16, 1929, and he preceded her in death after 741/2 years of marriage. She was preceded in death by her father (who was killed at work when she was 8 years old); her mother; her only sister, Dorothy Ewing; and her stepfather, Charles Derl. She is survived by her twin sons, Donald and wife Darrell Lee Walters of West Frankfort and Ronald and wife Loraine Walters of Cincinnati; four grandchildren, Deborah Linn of Bakersfield, Calif., David Jeffrey of Milwaukee, Wis., Rhonda Elaine Morrison of Detroit, Mich., and Thomas Hugh of Gardner, Kan.; and seven great-grandchildren. With two small girls to raise, her mother moved to live with an aunt in Alton and then to West Frankfort to live with her uncles. Mrs. Walters was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in West Frankfort for more than 75 years. Her love of little children was evident in her 26 years of service teaching in the church nursery. She was a homemaker but also assisted her husband in his outboard motor business at their home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with Minister Gene Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Tower Heights Cemetery

MURPHYSBORO -- Gladys Lucille Wright, 84, of Murphysboro, died at 6:09 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in Oak Grove Rehab and Care Center in Carbondale. She was born Dec. 17, 1919, in Anna, the daughter of David and Lena (Baldwin) Corzine. She married Claude Wright in 1938, and he died on Sept. 16, 1983. Gladys was a member of the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro. She worked in the Bursar's office at SIU for 27 years. She was also a member of OES Murphysboro Chapter. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Charles Guetersloh of Murphysboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Claude A. and Linda Wright of Murphysboro and Robert W. and Ruth Ann Wright of Kingwood, Texas; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Billie Gene Wright, in 1994; one sister, Mabel Davis, in 1991; and one brother, David Corzine, in 1972.
