Edmund 'Ed' Biedke Jr.
MURPHYSBORO -- Edmund 'Ed' John Biedke Jr., 72, of Murphysboro, passed away at 8:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro after a valiant battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in Pettett Funeral Home, with Father Gary Gummer- sheimer and the Rev. P. K. Sunny officiating. His body has been cremated. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Georgia (Smith) Biedke, a longtime Murphysboro resident; three daughters, Leslie Biedke of Villa Park, Ellen Biedke of Elmhurst, and Victoria and husband Terry LeGrand and Mr. Biedke's granddaughters Hannah and Helaina, all of Greencastle, Pa.; his granddaughter, Heidi and husband Eric Gudex of Oakfield, Wis.; one grandson, Gustav LeGrand, and great-granddaughter Kaylyn, both of Elkridge, Md.; four step-grandchildren, Gary, Greg, Holly and Heather LeGrand and their spouses and children; three stepdaughters, Jeri Lynn England of Missouri and grandson Jessie Rains of Kentucky, great-grandson Cody and great-granddaughter Kaylee, and grandson Willie England Missouri, Judith Nickles and grandson Jasper Nickles of Hawaii, and Lisa and husband Steve Burns of Hawaii; one sister, Constance Standard, and one niece, Kathleen and husband Kevin Corrigan, all of Des Plaines; and one nephew, Steven Pyferoen, and grand-nieces Samantha and Stephanie, all of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund John Sr. and Stephanie Biedke of Chicago, and his first wife, Barbara Ogorzelec. Mr. Biedke was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He began his career as an aircraft mechanic instructor for Trans World Airlines, retiring as a facilities manager after 37 years. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watercolor painting, woodworking and leaded glass crafting. He had a keen interest in history, world geography and the Chicago Cubs. At one time he was a member of a barbershop choral group. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jackson County Humane Society, St. Peter's United Church of Christ or the American Cancer Society.

ANNA -- Ray Morris, 79, of Anna, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born on Oct. 7, 1924, in Iowa, son of Auther Ray and Margaret V. Morris. He worked as a painter and is survived by many friends at City Care Center. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, Sept. 24, at the Jonesboro Cemetery, with the Rev. David Eidson officiating. Interment will follow in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Hileman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MURPHYSBORO -- Dorothy L. Graff, 80, died at 4:25 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at the Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County in Murphysboro. Nina Hoffman
CARBONDALE -- Nina I. Hoffman, 93, of Carbondale, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at home. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale, with the Rev. John Annable officiating. Interment was held at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park in Murphysboro. Friends called after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the funeral home. Nina was born on Aug. 21, 1911, in Hellertown, Pa., the daughter of Herbert Samuel and Meda Minerva (Balliet) Kressler. She married Paul M. Hoffman on July 8, 1933. He preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Paul R. Hoffman; one grandson, Richard P. Kipping; one sister, Florence Angstadt; and two brothers, Harold and Howard Kressler. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Nancy L. Hoffman of Carbondale and Patricia and Rick Kipping of Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter-in-law, Gwen Hoffman of Dellwood, Mo.; two grandsons, Jeffrey and wife Darlene Hoffman of Columbia, Mo., and David Kipping of Mesa, Ariz.; one granddaughter-in-law, Lynette Richmond of Vulcan, Mo.; one great-grandson, Brandon Hoffman of Annapolis, Mo.; great-granddaughter-in-law, Regena Hoffman of Annapolis, Mo.; two great-great-grandchildren, Breanna and Dreston Hoffman of Annapolis, Mo.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Herbert and Venus Kressler of Emmaus, Penn., Montford and Esther Kressler of Spring Hill, Fla., and Kenneth Kressler of Loveland, Colo.; one sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and George Mease of Kintnersville, Penn.; and one brother-in-law, Walter Hoffman of Crystal River, Fla. Mrs. Hoffman graduated as a practical nurse and did private duty care for some time. She had been very active in the First United Methodist Church in Carbondale, her church home, for over 50 years. She was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for many years. Her major focus was her family and her home. Memorial donations are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to First United Methodist Church, 214 West Main, Carbondale, IL 62901, or to VNA-TIP Hospice, 508 South Park Avenue, Herrin, IL 62948, and will be accepted by the funeral home.

DU QUOIN -- Harold Homes, 74, died at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at the home of his son in Benton. THOMPSONVILLE -- Willie Carter, 78, of Thompsonville, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, in Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in the First Apostolic Church in Marion, with the Revs. R. G. Walls and James Johnson officiating. Mr. Carter was born on Nov. 29, 1925, in Hamburg, Ark., to Wyatt T. and Mamie Zelma (Wallace) Carter. He married Lanta 'Pauline' Strunk on Oct. 10, 1947, in Johnston City, and she survives. Other survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Willie and Annette Carter of West Frankfort, Paul and Patti Carter of Irving, and Bobby and Laura Carter of West Frankfort; grandchildren, Amy and Steve Uhlry, Amanda and Lee Eddington, David Carter, Todd Carter, and Matthew Carter; great grandchildren, Alexa Uhlry, Camden Uhlry, Benjamin Carter and Madalynn Eddington; brothers, Odell, Treswell, Norwood, Robert and Billy; and sisters, Jeanette, Helen, Ethelyn and Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brother, Wyatt Carter, Jr. and Johnny Ray Carter; and three sisters, Mary Louise Phillips, Evelyn Lee Dodd and Linda Fay Carter. Mr. Carter was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Marion. He worked in construction as a carpenter. He was a 50-year member of the Carpenter Union where he served as business agent for several years. He served in the United States
Army during World War II.

Geraldine Shelton
ZEIGLER -- Geraldine Shelton, 72, of Zeigler, died at 1:40 p. m., Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. Geraldine was born Feb. 26, 1932, in Benton, to Virgil and Martha (Ellis) Hiller. She married Lyle Lavern Shelton on March 18, 1949, in Zeigler. He preceded her in death on July 23, 1997. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in- law, Debbie and Bill Phinney of Johnston City, Vicky and Lloyd Edwards of Zeigler, and Judy and Sinasi Selvi of Chicago; one son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Barb Shelton of Royalton; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Her parents preceded her in death. Mrs. Shelton was a member of the Zeigler First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a member of the Zeigler Eagles Auxiliary and the Royal Neighbors. Services for Mrs. Shelton will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler, with Brother Lee Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Miners Cemetery

Betty Jane Sparks
JOHNSTON CITY -- Betty Jane Sparks, 81, of Johnston City, passed away at 1:41 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at the Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with Brother Richard Peck officiating. in Johnston City. Mrs. Sparks was born on April 9, 1923, in Norris City, to Hayward and Ruby (Edmonds) Smith. She married James T. Sparks on Jan. 24, 1942, in Perryville, Mo. and he survives. Other survivors include her children, James and Kim Sparks of Raymond, N. H., Sandra and Richard Fulton of Tallahassee, Fla., Stephen and Mickey Sparks of Austin, Texas, Stephanie and Joe Salva of Fayetteville, N. C., Susan Swingle of Marion, Samuel and Marsha Sparks of Marion, Stanford and Kelly Sparks of Johnston City, Sara Barnard of Eldorado, and Sonya and Wesley Reed of Johnston City; grandchildren raised by James and Betty, Cynthia and Wayman Winters of Harrisburg and Mike and Neash Sparks of Harrisburg; 18 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; brothers, Gene Smith, Max Smith, Phillip Smith and Larry Smith; and sisters, Katie Lloyd, Ruth Phillips and Sue Feezor. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sally L. Reed; grandson, Cody Ray Casey; one brother; and three sisters. Betty was a devoted Christian wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother. She also worked a number of years outside the home, with employment at Southern Illinois University as a dining room supervisor and at Golconda Job Corps as a dorm counselor. She will be greatly missed by all.

WALTONVILLE -- Kenneth Eugene Day, 67, died at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton. Burial will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Day was on born Feb. 10, 1937, in West Frankfort, the son of Clarence and Edna (Martin) Day. He married the former Lorena Day on Nov. 7, 1958, and she survives. He was a retired mechanic and a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Moose Lodge. He served his country as a U. S. Air Force veteran during the Korean conflict. He is survived by his wife, Lorena Day, Waltonville; four sons, Randy Day, Lake Charles, La., Terry Day, Oxford, Wis., Eddie Day, Madison, Wis., Kenneth Day, Madison, Wis., six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a sister, Phyllis James, Granite City. Mr. Day was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Debra Lynn Day, and a brother, Gerald Day.

Julius Kaminski
CHRISTOPHER -- Eternal peace has been granted Julian 'Julius' Bernard Kaminski, 89, devoted husband, father and grandfather, who died on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at home in Christopher. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Fourez) Kaminski, whom he married on Oct. 27, 1962. Also surviving are their daughter and son-in-law, Mary B. and John Nemetsky, and Julius' adoring grandson, Peter David Nemetsky, all of Carbondale. He is also survived by his siblings, Helen Ames and Anthony and wife Judy Kaminski, all of Christopher, and Sisiter Ann Callista Kaminski, Order of St. Francis of Assisi, and Sophia Lawton, both of St. Louis; his brother-in-law, Frank Jr. and wife Lawanda Fourez of Christopher; a host of nieces and nephews and their spouses and children; and his dear friend and neighbor, Louise Bianchini. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Bernice Kaminski, to whom he was born on March 22, 1915, soon to be the eldest of five children. He was also preceded in death by his mother- and father-in-law, Frank Sr. and Mary (Bial) Fourez; his nephew, Larry Fourez Sr.; his niece, Julie (Ames) Anderton; and his brother-in-law, Polie Ames. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S.
Army. He worked as a freelance carpenter, as well as for the Illinois highway department. In his retirement, Julius was an avid gardener and woodworker. He enjoyed being with his family and playing with his young grandson. He was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Christopher. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in St. Andrew's Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Steven F. Poole officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the St. Andrew's Catholic Church Building Fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.
