Dollie Varnum
ROYALTON -- Dollie G. Varnum, 94, formerly of Royalton, died at 9:49 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, in Anna City Care. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, in Walker Funeral Home in Hurst, with the Rev. Jim Ebbs officiating. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Varnum was a homemaker and a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in Royalton. She was born on Oct. 3, 1910, in De Soto, to Richard and Rose (Loucks) Fann. She married Gus 'Tony' Varnum on Jan. 5, 1934, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1986. Survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Goldie Throgmorton of Anna, Ida Rose and Charlie Dixon of Johnston City, and Dollie 'Cookie' Carlson and fiance Jim Hoover of Fenton, Mich.; one son and daughter-in-law, Elmer Herbert 'Hoot' and Shirley Fann of Cilo, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Floyd and Archie Fann of Hurst and Roy Fann of Crestview, Fla.; and one sister, Paradine Conroy of Herrin. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Omer, Raymond, Clarence and Robert Fann; three sisters, Lena Fann, Marie Ingerson and Maggie Barnett; two daughters, Susietta Varnum and Leona 'Sissy' Counce; two grandsons, Aaron and Steven Throgmorton; one granddaughter, Carol Ann Counce; two great-grandchildren, Terrill Holland and Travis McCall; and two great-great-grandchildren, Shirley and Ronnie Fann.
Pauline Emery Watson
ELDORADO -- Pauline Emery Watson, 82, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, in Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in Watson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leo Everett Mattingly
HERRIN -- Leo Everett Mattingly, 83, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at home with his family by his side. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Van Natta Funeral Home, with the Revs. Don Colson and Brad Harlow officiating and military rites performed by the American Legion and VFW of Herrin. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation was from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Leo was born on June 8, 1921, to Lena (Zimmerman) Mattingly Anderson and Douglas James Mattingly. He married Betty F. (Robinson) Mattingly on March 23, 1947, and she preceded him in death in May 1993. He then married Peggy (Wickam) Bowlin Mattingly on June 26, 1998, and she survives. He worked for Illinois Central Gulf Railroad and retired after 25 years of service. Leo and Betty Mattingly began in the nursing home business in 1966. The business grew to three facilities and continued until 1997, when the facilities were sold and Leo retired. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Mattingly; four children and their spouses, Leo E. Mattingly Jr., William J. and Christine Mattingly, David A. and Tina Mattingly, and Susan K. Mattingly South and Jimmy South; his grandchildren, Shannon Kay (Mattingly) Whitlock, Shelley Lynn (Mattingly) Mays, Joseph Michael Mattingly, Jonathon Lee Mattingly, Daniel Patrick Mattingly, Tori Marie Mattingly, Lance Allen Mattingly, Jeremiah South and David South; and five great-grandchildren, Dakota and Kaylee Whitlock, Ariel and Jessica Mays, and Shalynn South; and two sisters-in-law, Peggy and JoAnn Mattingly. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; two brothers, James and Douglas Mattingly; and one daughter, Frances Lee Mattingly. Memorials may be made to the VNA Hospice or the Betty F. Louis Joseph Bacak
MARION -- Louis Joseph Bacak, 90, of Marion, passed away at 5:55 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. today in the Blue Funeral Home in Marion, with Pastor Art Donley officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29, in Dundee Township Cemetery. Mr. Bacak was born on May 27, 1914, in Crystal Lake, to Frank and Mary (Kocenda) Bacak. He married Jean Louise Forester, and she survives. Other survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jill Larkin of Loves Park, Donna Ruth and Robert Huffstutler of Elgin, and Sandra and Joe Darling of Marion; four grandchildren, Amy Thompson, Kevin Larkin, Hope Castell and Megan Huffstutler; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Courtney Larkin; and one sister, Tillie Finnell of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one sister. Mr. Bacak worked for the city of Elgin.
Jerald 'Pete' Pelvin
ELKVILLE -- Jerald 'Pete' Pelvin, 65, of Elkville, formerly of Grand Tower, died at 8:47 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, after a brief illness. Pete was born on June 6, 1939, to John and Kathryn (Vincent) Pelvin in Granite City. Pete was raised by his special uncle and aunt, Harry and Juel (Cripps) Vincent. Pete graduated from Shawnee High School on May 24, 1957. He then joined the Navy on Nov. 15, 1957. While he was in the Navy, he attended Fleet Sonar School. He went aboard the destroyer USS Blandy (DD 943) in 1958 and made rank of SOG-2 (E5) after four years in the Navy. Pete always talked about the service and the friends he met. He had kept in contact with his friend Dan Hauk. His friend Dave Powers preceded him in death. Pete's uncle, Harry Vincent, taught him the carpentry, electrical and plumbing trade. Pete loved this kind of work. He was a maintenance man in Grand Tower for many years until he moved to Elkville on Nov. 11, 1984. He then started working for Jerome Broski in Carbondale on rental property. Survivors include Belinda Nation (Pelvin) and their very special daughter, Marjorie Fern Pelvin; one sister, Faye Shaw of Metropolis; and many special nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Pete had many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Anna Vincent; his parents, John and Kathryn Pelvin; and his special aunt and uncle, Harry and Juel Vincent. Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel, located on Old Route 13 between Carbondale and Murphysboro, with the Rev. John Cripps officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marjorie Fern Pelvin Fund. WEST FRANKFORT -- Thresa Browning, 90, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, in Mascoutah. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Browning was a homemaker. She was a member of Orient Methodist Church. She was born on Jan. 29, 1914, in Thurber, Texas, to Charles and Anna Heyz Smith. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Robert Edwards of Mascoutah; four granddaughters, Toni Edwards and Sue Davenport of Bangor, Maine, Tena and husband Allen Bigham of Vergennes, and Melody and husband Frank Evans of Mascoutah; four great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Ashley Evans and Emma and Lucas Bigham; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank, on Oct. 18, 2004; two sisters, Louise Roth and Sylvia Loch; and three brothers, Stanley, John and Frank Smith. Donald Grapevine
MURPHYSBORO -- Donald H. Grapevine, 70, of Murphysboro, died at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at home after an illness. He was born on Feb. 21, 1934, to Benjamin and Ella Viola (Knickerbocker) Grapevine, in Peoria. He married Minnie E. Higgerson-Cottom on Sept. 6, 1969, in Murphysboro. He retired from the U. S.
Army after 21 years of service and then retired from the U. S. Postal Service in Peoria after 20 years of service. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 127 in Murphysboro and was also a member of the VFW. Mr. Grapevine is survived by his wife, Minnie; two stepchildren, James Robert and wife Bertha Cottom of Oklahoma and Kathy Jones of Columbus, Ohio; one son-in-law, Rex and wife Judy Corwin of St. Louis; three granddaughters, Erica Babcott, Macie Corwin and Alicia Knickerman, all of St. Louis; his mother-in-law, Ruth Robinson of Murphysboro; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Sandra Grapevine of Middleburg, Fla., and Everett and Delores Grapevine of Springbay; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Clara Bingamon of Norwood Park, Mary and Robert Waldorf of Middleburg, and Kathryn and Marvin Newton of Gatewood, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Iris and husband Jack Eastwood of Gilbertville, Ky., and Shirley Grissom of Murphysboro; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friends, Mike and Pam Hennesey of Peoria, and his beloved poodles, Samantha and Brady, who were his constant companions, spending time outdoors with him and begging for his attention. He will be missed by his family and many friends, as his joking and teasing will no longer keep them laughing and put smiles on their faces. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, in the Crain Funeral Home Pleasant Grove Chapel. Interment will be in Murdale Gardens of Memory. MASSAC COUNTY -- Evelyn Korte, 91, a longtime resident of the New Columbia community in Massac County, died at 7:35 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, in Superior Care Home in Paducah. Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Lona Rae Babbington of Calvert City, Ky., and Kay and Donald Rottmann of Metropolis; one son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Donna Korte, also of the New Columbia community; six grandchildren, Rebecca and husband Larry Brooks of Calvert City, John Crabb and Mary and husband Russell Gordon, all of Benton, Ky., Lisa and husband Jeff Bremer of Metropolis, Mark and wife Debbie Rottmann of Jamison, Penn., and Darian and wife Heather Rottmann of Metropolis; two step-grandchildren, Charles and wife Starla Price of Marion and Jodi Price of Kevil, Ky.; 11 great-grandchildren, Tracie Reisinger of Marshalltown, Iowa, Scott and wife Jeneie Culp and Terri and husband James Cowart, all of Benton, Raymond Culp of Paducah, Caroline, Laura and John Bremer and Elizabeth and Natalie Rottmann, all of Metropolis, and Logan and Blake Rottmann of Jamison, Penn.; two step-great-grandchildren, Crystal and Lacey Price; four great-great-grandchildren, Samantha and Tyler Reisinger and Dillon and Devon Culp; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Korte; one daughter, Molly Lou Korte; two sisters, Mary Turner of Kankakee and Maxie Lou Mussa of Chicago; and one great-grandson, Ryan Rottmann. She was born on Aug. 8, 1913, to Miles Jennings and LeMaude Stokes Jennings in the Mount Pleasant community near Anna. She was married to Ray Korte for 45 years, until his death on Nov. 18, 1979. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Massac County for 65 years, serving the church as a pianist, Sunday school teacher, member of the choir and the Women's Missionary Society. She and her husband, Ray, were lifelong members of the Massac County Farm Bureau and founding members of the Massac County Saddle Club. She was a founding member of the George's Creek Homemakers; served as a board member of the Farm Bureau Federation; and was active for many years in the Massac County Hospital Auxiliary, the American Quilters' Society and the Metropolis Quilters Club. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in the New Hope Baptist Church in Massac County, with visitation after 1 p.m. at the church. Paul McGinnis, Marlin Mitchell and Darian Rottmann will officiate. Interment will follow in the New Hope Cemetery.
