Howard H. McRaven
JONESBORO -- Howard H. McRaven, 62, son of Claude and Sophronia Harwood McRaven, was born in Jonesboro Oct. 20, 1940, and passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at the Union County Hospital in Anna. Mr. McRaven was united in marriage to Peggy Bird in Cobden on Aug. 28, 1958. He was a carpenter, and owner of the Gibbs-McRaven Shelter Care Home in Jonesboro since 1968. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. Mr. McRaven loved to fish and travel, and was very dedicated to his profession. However, his most treasured moments were the times he spent with his grandchildren, and the much-anticipated birth of his first great-grandchild in May. Survivors include his wife, Peggy, of Jonesboro; one son and daughter-in-law, Mitch and Lisa McRaven of Herrin; one grandson and wife, Jory and Richelle McRaven of Energy; one granddaughter, Maci McRaven of Herrin; his mother, Sophronia McRaven of Jonesboro; and one brother and wife, Allen and Kay McRaven of Anna. Mr. McRaven was preceded in death by his father; one brother, David McRaven; and two sisters, Martha McRaven and Louise McRaven. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, in the chapel of Hileman and Parr Funeral Services, with the Rev. Joe Aldridge officiating. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 16, 2003, at the funeral home.

MARION -- Louise Armes, 93, passed away at 11:25 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Fountains Nursing Center in Marion. Private services will be held. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Marion. Blue Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes are available at the funeral home, or may be sent in care of Blue Funeral Home, P. O. Box 411, Marion, IL 62959. Mrs. Armes was born on Aug. 22, 1909, in Dexter, Mo., to Spencer and Nella P. (Connor) Gamble. She married Carl Armes. He preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 1976. Survivors include daughter, Dorothy Winn of Marion; grandson and wife, Daryl and Lucinda Winn of Marion; grandson, Scott Winn of Marion; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Raymond Gamble and Roy Gamble. Mrs. Armes was retired from the Marion Memorial Hospital Housekeeping Department. She was a Baptist.

CARBONDALE -- Jacquelynn Brumley, 46, of Carbondale passed away at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Meredith Funeral Home, Carbondale, with Mr. Paul Giessler officiating. Interment will be held at Rowan Cemetery, Makanda. Friends may visit from 10 a.m. until time of the service at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at the funeral home. Jacquelynn was born Dec. 8, 1956, in Wisconsin to Milo and Betty (Livingstone) Schendell. She married Daniel Edward Brumley on Dec. 18, 1989, at the Bible Baptist Church, Carbondale. They were the first couple married at the church. Survivors include her husband, Daniel Brumley of Carbondale; and one sister, Patty Mercer of Savannah, Ga. Jacquelynn was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Murphysboro. She had worked as the Baptist Student Center as a counter. She loved God.

GOREVILLE -- Lowanda Thornton, 81, passed away at 12:05 p.m. in her home in Goreville. She was born April 12, 1922, in Johnson County, the daughter of Willis Dalton and Martha Gurley Dalton. Lowanda was united in marriage to John F. Thornton on Sept. 19, 1936, in Metropolis. He preceded her in death on April 13, 2003. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Dallas Glenn Thornton of Elgin, Mickey Lynn Thornton of Centralia, Donnie Joe and Ruth Ann Thornton of Springfield, and Jack E. Thornton and Beth McMahan of Wolf Lake; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Don Waters and Rita and Jerry Vaughn, all of Marion, and Patricia and Steve Russell of Goreville; 20 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, H. V. Trammell of Stonefort; a niece, Peggy Etheridge; and a nephew, Larry Gurley. In addition to her parents and husband, Lowanda was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Kay Trammell, and a daughter-in-law, Peggy Thornton. Lowanda was a homemaker. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend. Lowanda was a member of the Cedar Grove Church near Buncombe. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, in Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, with the Rev. Don Eberhart officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery. PINCKNEYVILLE -- Augusta O. Marlow, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, in Pinckneyville Community Hospital Skilled Care Unit. She was born July 8, 1910, in Perry County, the daughter of Frederick and Sophia Heumann Sutter. She was united in marriage to Karl G. Marlow on March 9, 1940, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and he preceded her in death on June 25, 1985. Augusta and her husband owned and operated the Marlow's Paint Store in Pinckneyville and she also worked as a clerk at McCant's in Pinckneyville. Augusta was a member of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ where she was a choir member and Sunday school teacher. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert G. and Kathy A. Marlow of Pinckneyville; a daughter and son-in-law, Karla K. and Charles F. Keene of Shipman; and five grandchildren, Kirk Keene, Robert Marlow Jr., Kyle Keene, Krista Griffin and Kara Marlow. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, William and Jake, four sisters, Kati Franklin, Clara Knapp, Emma Wool and Sophia Ende. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2003, in St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pinckneyville, with the Revs. Chuck Keene and Howard Self officiating. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, in First United Methodist Church in Creal Springs, with the Revs. Kenny Burns and Shorty Alsip officiating. Burial will be in Creal Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Cosby-Sloan Funeral Home in Creal Springs and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday in the church. She was born Aug. 1, 1909, in Carrier Mills, to Walter Wayne and Bessie Sims Travelstead. She married Carl R. Reed Aug. 10, 1931, in Creal Springs Methodist Parsonage. She was a homemaker and a member of Creal Springs United Methodist Church and Creal Springs Ladies VFW Auxiliary. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn Ann and Jack Brown of Creal Springs; three brothers, Lowell Wayne Travelstead of Marion, Alvin Eugene Travelstead of Creal Springs, and Marvin Dale Travelstead of Rector, Ark.; a sister, Naoma Ruth Messier of Marquette, Mich.; four grandchildren, David L. Brown, Brenda Anne and Jim Hines, Kimberly Anne and Monty Pearce, and Teresa Lynn and Carroll Fred; five great-grandchildren, Joshua Fosse, Keith Pearce, Eleah Pearce, Nathan Fred and Missy Fred; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Merilyn Reed, son, Ellis Reed, two brothers, Cyrus Clarence and Kenneth "Jack" Travelstead, and two sisters, Esther Z. Carter and Lillie Mae Jack.
