Leala Fern Schelosky
MOUNT VERNON -- Leala Fern Schelosky, 84, of Mount Vernon, died at 2:20 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital. Leala was born Oct. 23, 1918, to Lawrence Leland McIntire and Nettie Belle Pennington. On May 6, 1939, she married William Schelosky in Mount Vernon. Together they owned and operated Jordan Furniture Company. She was a sales associate at the Lynn-Ann Shop for several years. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and president of St. Anne's Guild of Trinity Episcopal Church, served on the Vestry and was a member of the Altar Guild. She was also a proud member of the Whippoorwill Club for 51 years. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Esther Schelosky of Mount Vernon; two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Herb Newell of Waltonville and Jo Ann and Doug Williams of Highland; one sister and brother-in-law, Eva June and Bill Lawton of Sun City, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Julie and Martin Jette of Bradley, Dub and Wendy Newell of Louisville, Ky., Kim and Jeff Aspelmeier of Radford, Va., Amy and Timothy Bain of Kankakee, Jason and Amy Newell of Mount Vernon, Kit and Dan Sheets of Fenton, Mo., and Justin Newell of Waltonville; five great-grandchildren, Sarah, Nicholas, Bryan, Emma and Asa; sister-in-law, Mary Schelosky of Evansville; and a niece, Sue Schelosky of Princeton, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Carl and Clelle McIntire, and a brother-in-law, Robert Schelosky. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, in Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Donald R. Perschall officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, in Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Joseph 'Joe' Sroka
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Joseph "Joe" Sroka, 88, of Pinckneyville, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Pinckneyville Health Care Center. Joe was born March 30, 1915, in Pinckneyville, the son of Leon and Helen Filipski Sroka. He was united in marriage to Lottie Mae Heisner on March 2, 1946, and she preceded him in death on April 11, 2001. They were blessed with 55 years of marriage. He was a retired Teamster union member and was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Janet Sroka of Pinckneyville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Frances and Steve Dunn of Bellflower, Mo., Parry and Nicky Louis of Pinckneyville, and Joan Sroka of Du Quoin; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, Sherry and Ken Mohr and their children Olivia and Audrey of Columbia, Mo., Kevin and Martie Dunn and their children, Stephanie and Erica of Jefferson City, Mo., Joel and Jeana Louis and their children Jacob and Jayla of Herrin, Keith and Melissa Dunn and their children Joseph and Katherine of Elsberry, Mo., Wes and Sherri Sroka and their children Julian, Luke and Faith of Sparta, and Jason Louis of St. Peters, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers, two infant brothers, four sisters and one sister in childhood. Ruth was born July 23, 1916, in Saline County, to Arthur and Della Martin Middleton. She married T. Henry Hill in 1935, and he preceded her in death in 1999. She was a member of Main St. Church of God in Carrier Mills. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jane Hill of Marion; two grandchildren and their spouses, Brad and Debbie Hill of Brentwood, Tenn., and Stacey and Shane Grinell of Greenwood, Mo.; four stepgrandchildren and their spouses, Susan and Leroy O'Neal and Sheryl and Tim Bleyer, all of Carterville, Gregg and Penni Hurst of Acworth, Ga., and Jon and Jane Hurst of Marion; five great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and a nephew and his wife, Charles and Joyce Reeder of Carrier Mills. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Wayne Middleton, and one sister, Vivian Reeder.

SESSER -- Danny Ray Hargis, 69, died at 12:53 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, in Franklin Hospital E. R. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, with Brother Gene Outland officiating. Burial will be in Horse Prairie Cemetery. Danny was born Oct. 1, 1934, in Tracy City, Tenn., to Samuel and Margie McGovern Hargis. He married Martha Sample Hargis and she survives. He was a member of the Elks in Benton and an avid NASCAR fan. Survivors include a sister-in-law and her husband, Joan and Bill Earnheart of Sesser; four brothers-in-law and their wives, Bill and Marie Sample, Larry and Mona Sample and Danny and Sharon Sample, all of Sesser, and Roy and Joan Sample of Geona; several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Mitchell and Irene Sample.
