WEST FRANKFORT -- Jane Ellen Schultz, 44, departed this life Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Larry Lemay officiating. Interment will be in Tower Heights Cemetery. Friends of the Jane Schultz family may call after 9 a.m. Monday in Stone Funeral Home. The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. John's Church in her memory. Jane was born June 10, 1959, in Benton, the daughter of Bud and Verne Marcum Schultz. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was president of the Bernadette Sodality of the church. Jane worked at Fifth Season Congressional Estates as a caregiver. Survivors include her parents, Bud and Verne Schultz of West Frankfort; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Marsha Schultz of West Frankfort; a niece, Jami Schultz of Evansville, Ind.; three nephews, Luke Schultz of Eldorado and Ben Schultz and Timmy Schultz, both of West Frankfort; a sister-in-law, Annette Barton of Eldorado; many aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends. Her grandparents and one brother, Jim Schultz, preceded her in death.

Leo Harry Gosnell
HERRIN -- Leo Harry Gosnell, 80, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, in Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin, with the Revs. Don Colson and Ralph Brandon officiating. Interment will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc., 1110 N. Johnson St., Marion, IL 62959-1665. Leo was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Herrin, to Harry Gosnell and Mona Watson Pierce. Leo was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He proudly served our great nation with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles and parachuted into France the night before D-Day. He was at Bastogne for the Battle of the Bulge and at the end of the war, Leo was at Berchtesgaden, Germany, also known as Hitler's Eagle's Nest. Leo was a member of the barbershop quartet and enjoyed collecting guns and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Bill Drake of Herrin; one niece, Sharon and Steve Carr of Bloomington; one great-nephew, Stephen and Michelle Drake-Carr of Montana; two great-great-nieces, Avery and Caroline of Montana; one aunt, Fern Stineman of Salem; and many cousins and friends. Leo leaves two
hunting dogs, Spunky and Whimpy, and one special cousin and caregiver, Bruce Gosnell and his wife Paula, who stayed with Leo to the end. Leo is preceded in death by his parents, one aunt, Cielcle Long, and stepmother, Laura Hartwell Gosnell. Leo made his profession of faith several weeks ago and is now with our beloved savior.
W. Gary Hoey
BENTON -- W. Gary Hoey, 50, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, in the V. A. Medical Center in Marion. He was born Nov. 28, 1952, in Du Quoin. Gary was an
Army veteran, serving in Vietnam with the 1st Squadron of the 9th Regiment-Cavalry Air Mobile Unit. Gary was a coal miner and a member of the Benton Elks, Eagles and VFW. Survivors include three uncles and their wives, Raymond and Mary Piacentini of Sesser, Leo and Mary Picantine of Chicago, and Allen and Opal Picantine of Florida; and uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hoey of Christopher; three aunts, Mary Clausen of Chicago, Mable Picantine and Laurette Picantine, both of Benton; a cousin and her husband, Dee and Mike Mercer of Herrin, who cared for him during his illness; and several other cousins. Mr. Hoey was preceded in death by his father, William Hoey, his mother, Ida Picantine Whittington, and by four uncles, Nello, John, Lego "Beanie" and Claude. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, in Masonic and Oddfellows Cemetery

MOUNT VERNON -- Fern Drew, 93, died at 12:20 p. m., Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, in Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. Services will be at 1:30 p. m., Sunday in Hughey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard McCormick officiating. Burial will be in East Salem Cemetery
in rural Jefferson County. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. She was a member of East Salem Baptist Church, Jefferson County Historical Society, and Jefferson County Homemakers Extension. She was a charter member of Southern Illinois Earth Science Club. She was active in Girl Scouts for over 20 years, and during the 1960s she was director of Girl Scout Camp Cedar Point on Little Grassy Lake. She was still known by her camp name, "Corky. " She was a 53-year member of Homemakers Extension program and served as county chairman in Massac, Perry, Williamson, Franklin and Jefferson counties. She also served as Homemaker's Extension District Director and State Board member. She was chairman of East Salem Baptist Church kitchen committee for many years. Mrs. Drew was born June 17, 1910 in De Land to Charles and Cora (Harlow) Bayne. She married Oren A. Drew Sept. 25, 1937, in Mount Vernon. He died June 11, 2003. Fern enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Survivors include one daughter, Eva Drew of Marion; one sister and brother-in-law, Hilda and Russell Huston of Mount Vernon; one brother-in-law and his wife, Charles and Ann Drew of Rockford; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Oathout of Belle Rive and Louise Hughey of Centralia, Wash.; six nephews and their wives, Mike and Sharon Drew of Bedford, Texas, David and Sherry Drew of Machesney Park, Lindell and Gale Oathout of Belle Rive, John and Dot Hughey of White City, Ore., Bill and Jean Hughey of Woodbridge, Va., and Steve Brown of Nashville, Tenn.; eight nieces and their husbands, Mary and Frank Paulins of Onsloska, Wash., Dot and Gary O'Conner of Centralia, Wash., Linda and Dave Read of Centralia, Wash., B. J. and Rich Snyder of Mount Vernon, Marian and Nichols Joyce of Fountain Hill, Ariz., Phyllis Kelley of Mulberry, Fla., Charlotte Christie of Auburndale, Fla., and Sue Oathout of Land O Lakes, Fla.; two special grand-nephews who called her "Grandma Fern" and their wives, Steven and Adrian Drew of Saganaw, Texas, and Jerry and Alisha Drew of Saganaw, Texas; and one cousin, Cleo Pigg of Mount Vernon.

Mr. Hunt was an assistant manager at Moto-Mart in Carterville. He was born Oct. 30, 1963, in Granite City to Harold and Tina (Needham) Hunt. He married Eva Louise Deadmond. She survives. in Dongola. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Morningstar was born April 26, 1899, in Union County, the daughter of William and Mary Elizabeth (Speck) Volner. She married Herbert Knight and he preceded her in death in 1941. She later married Dennis Morningstar and he preceded her in death in 1972. Mrs. Morningstar was a loving mother and a housewife. Born and raised in Union County, she enjoyed going to the Union County Fair. She was a member of the Assemblies of God Church in Benton. She is survived by two daughters, Ruth Landis of Vienna and Opal Hankla of Dundee; a son, George Knight of Carmi; 19 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mae Deckard of Cairo; and a brother, Roy Volner of Alton. Mrs. Morningstar was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; five children, Mary Thelma, Lloyd, Linda, Florence, and H. V. Knight; two grandsons; and two brothers. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

She loved animals, especially cats and horses, and she enjoyed making people laugh. Stephanie is survived by her parents, Steve and Karen (Felker) Williams of Clarksville, Tenn.; one sister, Monica Williams of Clarksville; her grandparents, Donna Williams of Metropolis and Johnny and Barbara Felker of Karnak; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Vera B. Drennan
MOUNT VERNON -- Vera B. Drennan, 88, died at 9:13 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital. Vera was born March 5, 1915, in Mount Vernon, to Orville and Elizabeth Meredith Brown. She married Carl Drennan and he preceded her in death on May 13, 1966. She was a graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale and was an office manager for the Illinois Department of Unemployment until her retirement. She also served her country during World War II in the U. S. Navy. She was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church of Mount Vernon. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Rebecca Drennan of Mount Vernon; two grandchildren, Chris and Amy Drennan of Opdyke and Casey Drennan of Mount Vernon; two great-grandchildren, Kendyl Ann and Ethan Drennan of Opdyke. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, Clyde Brown, and two sisters, Rose McDaniel and Mavis Hopper. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, in Newell Funeral Home, with Pastor Chuck Ellis and the Rev. Everette LeMay officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 141 of Mount Vernon.
