Louise R. Hodge
METROPOLIS -- Louise R. Hodge, 86, of Metropolis and formerly of McClure, passed away Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in Metropolis Rehab Center. Louise was born Aug. 22, 1917, the daughter of A. R. and Ola Cleaver Rogers. She was a beautician and operated a shop in McClure for many years. She also worked for many years as a cook on a river boat. She married Howard Hodge in 1975. He preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1997. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter and one brother, Leroy Rogers. She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Cross in Metropolis. Survivors include her mother- in-law, Mildred Hodge of Metropolis; six sisters and two brothers-in-law, Marie Held, Annie Blaylock, Jean and Marshal Moss, all of Anna, Leoda Watkins of Ware, Wilma Colyer of McClure and Doris and Kenny Jobe of Virginia; one brother and sister-in-law, Buddy and Lea Rogers of Sun City, Ariz.; brother-in- law and sister-in-law, Lester and Rosalie Barger of Metropolis; many nieces, nephews and friends, including Bo and Buffy. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with the Rev. David Deem officiating. Burial will be in Lindsey Cemetery. Visitation was Monday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lourdes Hospital.
O. J. Tretter
MURPHYSBORO -- O. J. Tretter, 85, passed away at 2:47 a.m. Sunday, August 24, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Murphysboro, with Father Gary Gummersheimer officiating. Burial will be in St. Andrew Cemetery, with military services conducted by the American Legion Post 127, VFW Posts 7190 and 2605, and the Jackson County Disabled American Vets Chapter 69. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew School. He was born on April 20, 1918, in Johnston City to Joseph and Mary (Visitainer) Tretter and was raised near Jacob. Mr. Tretter was a local business man and an International Harvester Dealer. He had operated some grain elevators and had other business ventures. Most recently he had been co-owner of the post office. He served in the U. S.
Army during World War II where he was a topographic engineer. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following the war, he served in the reserves for several years. Mr. Tretter was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 127. He married Zeronel Lively on Jan. 6, 1951, in Ava, and she survives. Other survivors include one sister, Irma Adams of Florence, S. C.; several nieces and nephews, including Gary Tretter and his wife Jane, Linda Hines and her husband Roger, and Violet Mae Sissie Smith of Herrin; several great nieces and great nephews; one brother-in-law and his wife, Terry and Dorothy Lively of Herrin; two sisters-in-law, Martha C. Dillow and Frances Tretter, both of Murphysboro. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Reno Tretter of Chester and Arthur Tretter of Murphysboro; and his parents.
Beulah May Zoller
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Beulah May Zoller, 88, died at 2:10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Collinsville Care Center in Collinsville. Beulah was born in Du Quoin on Dec. 15, 1914, a daughter of Pleasant and Emma May (Brown) Bird. She married Elda Melvin Zoller on Jan. 7, 1933, in Murphysboro, and he preceded her in death Aug. 10, 1989. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville. She had worked at Ben Franklin Store and Clinic Pharmacy, both in Pinckneyville. Beulah loved to cook, especially for others. She was faithful to visit people in their homes. She is survived by one sister, Lillie Wolfe of Pinckneyville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and three sisters. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville, with the Rev. Maurice Swinford officiating. Interment will be in Galum Presbyterian Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Pinckneyville. David Shaw
SPARTA -- David E. Shaw, 52, died at 1:16 p. m., Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at home. Mr. Shaw was cremated and his remains were buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta was in charge of arrangements.
Delaney 'Dee' (Dorris) Robinson
MARION -- Delaney "Dee" (Dorris) Robinson, 68, of Marion, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at the Blue Funeral Home, Marion, with Bob Wagner and the Rev. Andrew Lee officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Paducah, Ky. Mrs. Robinson was born Aug. 8, 1935, in Coffeeville, Miss., to Murry Pete and Lura (Summers) Dorris. She married Harry Don Robinson on May 7, 1973, in Crab Orchard. He preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 1988. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Kendra Lee of Ziegler, Mike and Mary Lee of Lewisville, Texas, and Floyd and Darlene Lee of Paducah, Ky.; daughters and sons-in- law, Gail and Kevin Cox of Marion and Joann and Sam Miller of Carterville; step- daughters, Patti and Rick Chick of Marion and Gayla Hendrickson of Madison, Ala.; 12 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers, Jessie Dorris of Longview, Texas, Murry Dorris of Utlima, Fla., and Dale Dorris of Enid, Miss.; sisters, Lafaye House of Wickencliff, Ariz. and Gwen Lawrence of Mississippi; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and sister, Cherri Boyle. Mrs. Robinson was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Marion. She worked as a Home Health Care Nurse's Assistant, retiring after several years.
Leo Harry Gosnell
HERRIN -- Leo Harry Gosnell, 80, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at home. Services will be at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 26, 2003, in Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin, with the Revs. Don Colson and Ralph Brandon officiating. Interment will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. toady, Aug. 26, 2003, in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois Inc., 1110 N. Johnson St., Marion, IL 62959-1665. Leo was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Herrin, to Harry Gosnell and Mona Watson Pierce. Leo was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He proudly served our great nation with the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" and parachuted into France the night before D- Day. He was at Bastogne for the Battle of the Bulge and at the end of the war, Leo was at Berchtesgaden, Germany, also known as Hitler's Eagle's Nest. After returning home, Leo worked for many years, and retired from, Orpack in Herrin. Leo was a member of the barbershop quartet and enjoyed collecting guns and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Bill Drake of Herrin; one niece, Sharon and Steve Carr of Bloomington; one great-nephew, Stephen and Michelle Drake-Carr of Montana; two great-great- nieces, Avery and Caroline of Montana; one aunt, Fern Stineman of Salem; and many cousins and friends. hunting dogs, Spunky and Whimpy, and one special cousin and caregiver, Bruce Gosnell and his wife Paula, who stayed with Leo to the end. Leo is preceded in death by his parents, one aunt, Cicle Long, and stepmother, Laura Hartwell Gosnell. Leo made his profession of faith several weeks ago and is now with our beloved savior.
Evelyn Fedderke
MURPHYSBORO -- Evelyn M. Fedderke, 68, of Murphysboro, passed away at 10:10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ted Mayes officiating. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery
at Steeleville. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and until the hour of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family to be used for the future education of Evelyn's grandchildren. She was born on Nov. 6, 1934, in Randolph County to William Andrew Faverty and Edith Victoria (Ninness) Faverty. Evelyn had worked as a restaurant cook, she had worked in the bakery at Boren's IGA in Carbondale and had also been a cook at the Immanuel Lutheran School. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro and a member of the V. F. W. Ladies Auxiliary at Chester. She married William Bill Fedderke on July 22, 1956, in Chester, and he survives. Other survivors include their daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Scott Talley of Murphysboro; six grandchildren, Brad Short, Sammie Short, Stephanie Short, Jeff Talley, Tony Talley and Nick Talley, all of Murphysboro; one sister, Iva Ann Brockmeyer and her husband Irvin Brockmeyer of Sparta, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, Leemon, Curtis and Daniel Faverty; one sister, Neva Faverty and her parents.
Peter Griesell
GODFREY -- Peter Todd Griesell, of Godfrey, formerly of Southern Illinois, died at 8:01 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was born Nov. 21, 1951, in San Diego, Calif., the son of Mary Elizabeth (nee Collard) Griesell of Godfrey and the late Edward Peter Griesell. He graduated in 1969 from Alton Senior High School and later attended Arizona State University and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He had been employed many years at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz. and most recently in CAD Design at CASCO in St. Louis. He was an avid swimmer and enjoyed bicycling and bowling. In addition to his mother, he is survived and will be greatly missed by several cousins including Richard Collard of New Hampshire, Phillip Collard of San Antonio, Texas, Jim Collard of Helotes, Texas, R. Michael Collard of Santa Clarita, Calif., Susan Kidd of Tallahassee, Fla., Andrew Collard of Tallahassee, Fla. and Steven Collard of Tallahassee, Fla.; special friend, Karen Williams of Overland, Mo.; other extended family and many dear friends. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Earl and Ethel Collard, Edward Peter and Katrin Griesell; great aunt, Mae Carmichael and uncles, Robert Collard and John Collard. ZEIGLER -- Mary Elizabeth Varnum, 87, died at 10:50 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Jonesboro Healthcare Center in Jonesboro. Mary was born in Tamaroa on May 27, 1916, the daughter of Thomas and Daisy (Provart) Pierce. She married Lawrence Varnum Oct. 17, 1934, in Pinckneyville, and he survives. Survivors include her husband of Jonesboro Healthcare Center; one daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Jerry Williamson of Olmstead; three grandchildren and one spouse, Susan and Mark Corey of Clinton Township, Mich., and Jeff Hankla and Gordon Hankla, both of Carbondale; two step- grandchildren, Laurie Batignani of East Windsor, Conn., and Steven Williamson of Enfield, Conn.; and three great- grandchildren, Megan and Lindsey Corey and Emily Hankla. Mrs. Varnum was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Carrie Pierce; two brothers, Byford and Daniel Pierce; and a grandson, Lark Lawrence.
