Marjorie Ruth Brown Shackford
CARBONDALE -- Marjorie Ruth Brown Shackford, 86, of Mount Vernon, Iowa, formerly of Carbondale, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2003, in St. Luke's Hospital of congestive heart failure. Born in Carbondale on Jan. 16, 1917, she was the daughter of William O. and Clara Dillow Brown. She was the youngest of four children, with siblings Van, Leo and Mary Martha, all deceased. She is survived by Mary Barrow Brown of Carbondale. She married John Branner Shackford in 1942, who died in 1988. He was the son of Dr. John Walter and Love Branner Shackford. Mrs. Shackford taught school for many years including English at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 26 years, and part-time at Cornell College for six years. She taught English at Carbondale Community High School until 1942. She was a graduate of Carbondale Community High School. She held degrees from Southern Illinois University and George Peabody. Marjorie was passionate about helping others. Besides her remarkable teaching career, she was an avid spokesperson for the elderly, serving for many years as board members on the Heritage Agency on Aging, member of the Elder Iowans Legislature, and president of the Board of Chapel View in Mount Vernon, Iowa. For three decades she served in numerous capacities on Iowa regional and state organizations for education. She and her husband lived in Mount Vernon for 55 years, having moved there in 1948. Her frequent dinner parties will be remembered by her friends not only as delicious, but also as a place to gather and share with each other. Marjorie was a good listener. She is survived by three daughters; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Eldest daughter is Martha Dillow Shackford of McLean, Va.; middle daughter is Mary Lyons Shackford Welch of Portland, Ore.; and youngest daughter is Catherine Branner Shackford of New York City. Catherine's children are Megan Shackford June and Charles Maceo June also of New York City. Marjorie was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City, Iowa. The body has been donated to the Department of Anatomy at University of Iowa in Iowa City. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, in Allee Chapel at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Save the Children's Federation, 54 Wilton Road, Westport, CT 06880.

Eva Bernice Crowell
MURPHYSBORO -- Eva Bernice Crowell, 88, died at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, in Murphysboro. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale, with the Rev. Tom Monroe officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. She was born March 30, 1915, in Hurst, to John Lee and Mary Robison Signaigo. She married Adolph "Addie" Crowell on Sept. 6, 1930, in Murphysboro. She was a member of the Lakeland Baptist Church and was a retired food service manager. Survivors include her husband of Carbondale; two sons, Addie Crowell and Kenneth Crowell, both of Carbondale; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Glenn Crowell, one brother and two sisters.

Kathy Flamm Reeves
COBDEN -- Kathy Flamm Reeves, 51, of Selah, Wash., formerly of Cobden, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, in Oregon Health Science University Hospital in Portland, Ore. Arrangements are incomplete at Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Cobden.

Edward Stratton Edwards
MOUNT VERNON -- Edward Stratton Edwards, 82, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, in Colorado Springs, Colo. Mr. Edwards was born Feb. 21, 1921 in Mount Vernon. He was a graduate of Mount Vernon Township High School and attended Southern Illinois University. He was inducted into the Army on Sept. 2, 1942, and was honorable discharged on Dec. 12, 1945. During his military career he served in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery under fire in saving the life of one of his comrades. He was married for over 56 years to Betty (Rankin) Edwards, who survives. He is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David Scott and Debra Edwards of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; and five nieces, Janet (Wood) Pagliuca of Denver, Colo., Linda (Maxwell) Yond of Grand Island, N. Y., Dianne Lee of Omaha, Neb., Karen Reaktenwalt of Peoria and Sandy Edwards of Pekin. He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn (Stratton) Edwards; his father, William Edwards; three brothers, Robert, Louis and Leland; and one sister, Eleanor Maxwell. Mr. Edwards was a devout Christian and a long time member of the Church of the Nazarene. He served as church board member, usher and treasurer in both Mount Vernon and Belleville, where he moved in 1964. He served on the school board of Field Consolidated School in Dix. He was a member of the American Legion He worked for Wagner Electric Corporation and for the State of Illinois Department of Labor. He retired in 1986. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend. He had a lively sense of humor and was always willing to extend a helping hand to anyone in need. All who knew him will mourn his death. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hughey Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Friends of Edward Stratton Edwards may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Alma Van Cleve
CARBONDALE -- Alma Van Cleve, 97, died Friday, February 21, 2003, in Martinsville, N. J. Alma's life had spanned nearly a century when she died peacefully in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Marek Sosnowski, where she had been cared for the past three and half years of her life. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, in First Baptist Church, 302 W. Main St., Carbondale. Interment of Alma's ashes will be in the family gravesite in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Carbondale following the service. She was born in Elkville to William and Elisa (Robinson) Adkins. She moved to Carbondale after her marriage to James Van Cleve in 1935, and resided in the family home on South Poplar Street for more than 40 years while raising their children, Sula Kay Krawczyk of Belleville, Marsha Van Cleve-Sosnowska of Martinsville, N. J., and Ted, deceased since 1996. In 1972, Alma and James moved to a lakeside residence which they built at New Thompson Lake, upon James' retirement from the Illinois Central Railroad. She continued to reside there after James' death in April 1986, until joining Marsha and Marek in Martinsville. Her daughter Marsha is in charge of arrangements and may be contacted at 2274 Brookside Drive, Martinsville, N. J. 08836.

Arthur Johnson
BELLE RIVE -- John Arthur Johnson, 95, died at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Nature Trail Healthcare Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church, wit the Revs. Richard McCormick and Norman Howell officiating. Burial will be in Belle Rive-Flint Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. He was born Dec. 7, 1907, in Jefferson County to Lee and Jennie (Robertson) Johnson. The Rev. Bird Green united Arthur and Hallie Florence Harper of McLeansboro in marriage in East Side Baptist Church in Mount Vernon on Jan. 16, 1938. She preceded him in death on Dec. 13, 1998. Mr. Johnson was a life long resident of the Opdyke-Belle Rive area and was a self-employed farmer. He professed his faith at an early age and was a member of Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church. He was a former member of the Belle Rive Grade School Board and the Pendleton Township Board. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene Sue and Kenneth Wind of Normal and Dorothy Ann and Dennis Hanson of Belle Rive; two granddaughters and a husband, Cheryl Wollrab and Carol and Danny Deavers; two grandchildren, Jesse Deavers and Justin Deavers; two step-granddaughters, Karen Shumacker and Kendra Coleman; and three step-great-grandchildren, Ashley Coleman, Dustin Shumacker and Vance Shumacker. His parents; wife; and grandson-in-law, Brad Wollrab, preceded him in death. Hughey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Richardson Draper
HERRIN -- Jessie Richardson Draper, 95, died at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at her daughter's residence in Herrin. Jessie was born Feb. 22, 1908, in Plumfield to Elvis & Annie (Karnes) Appleton. She first married Earl Richardson and he preceded her in death. She later married Robert B. Draper on Oct. 12, 1947, in Mississippi. He preceded her in death in 1972. Mrs. Draper was a homemaker. She was a member of the Herrin First Christian Church. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Paralee and Joe Miller of Lakeside, Calif., and Randee and Robert Ellis of Herrin; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Bernice Richardson of Twin Falls, Idaho; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; two daughters, Imogene Shaffer and Shirley Schrager; two sons, Jack Albert Richardson and Chris Alan Draper; three brothers; and two grandchildren. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, in Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lee Lovett officiating. Burial will follow at Herrin City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

CHESTER -- Gary E. Sexton, 63, of Chester, formerly of Herrin, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Chester. Arrangements are incomplete at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.

Virginia E. Schneider
BENTON -- Virginia E. Schneider, 90, of 905 Highland St., Benton, formerly of Metropolis, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in her daughter's home in Benton. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, in the Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis, with the Rev. Wes Osborn officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery in Metropolis. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Hobb-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday in Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the First United Methodist church in Metropolis.

Ricky Cobb
MCLEANSBORO -- Ricky H. Cobb, 52, died at 2:25 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2003, in Hamilton Memorial Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Gholson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Hughey Funeral Home, with Mr. Tom Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Evergreen Cemetery in Central City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. She was born May 28, 1949 in St. Louis to John Glennen and Vada Susan (Ward) Russell. Survivors include three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Cathy Russell of Centralia, Trish and Tom Hunter of Mount Vernon and Jane and Chuck Carpenter of Walnut Hill; two brothers and a sister-in-law, John and Anne Russell of Pleasant Hills, Calif., and Don Russell of Colorado; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Her parents; grandparents; and two brothers, Dennis Russell and Ronnie Russell, preceded her in death.

HERRIN -- Jerry Lee Russell, 67, of Centralia, formerly of Herrin, died at 12:55 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Friendship Manor in Nashville. Arrangements are incomplete at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.

Marie Newman
HARRISBURG -- Marie Newman, 94, died at 1 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Saline Care Center in Harrisburg. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, with Pastor Jeff Rush officiating. Burial will be in Raleigh Masonic Cemetery in Raleigh. Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Athalae 'Tillie' McGuire
MURPHYSBORO -- Athalae "Tillie" McGuire, 97, of Oregon, Ill., and for the past 11 years a resident of the Oregon Healthcare Center, died Saturday, July 19, 2003. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oregon, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Father William Budden will be celebrant. Services will be preceded by one hour of visitation. She was born on Feb. 11, 1906, to Hosea Ross and Mary (Gollon) Elliott. She married George Michael McGuire on Oct. 17, 1942, in St. Louis. She graduated from Murphysboro Township High School, received her BS from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, and attended the University of Wisconsin, University of Iowa, University of Washington, and Northern Illinois University, Dekalb and Taft Campus in Oregon where she received her MS in outdoor education. All her degrees were in education. In her 42-year teaching career she taught in Murphysboro, Pinckneyville, Oregon Grade and High School, followed by 15 years in Rockford's Halstrom and Evergreen Schools. She retired in 1971 after a highly successful teaching career. "Tillie" as she was affectionately known, was one of the most highly respected teachers in the area. She was often referred to by her students as "my favorite teacher." She was a member of the Belta Theta Tau Sorority, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, Ogle County Retired Teachers Association and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a Lifeline volunteer for many years. In Dec. 1995, she was honored as resident of the month by the Oregon Healthcare Center. She, and her late husband George, were major contributors to their church, St. Mary's of Oregon. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; four sisters; and two brothers. Survivors include thirteen nieces and nephews including a niece, Mrs. Jackie (Earl) Gambrel of Oregon; her caregiver and niece, Barbara Jean Muckelroy of Murphysboro; and a very loyal friend, Jean Davis of Oregon. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions for a special project for St. Mary's Church may be sent in care of Mrs. Jackie Gambrel, 228 W. Blackhawk Vista, Oregon, IL 61061, or to Jean Muckelroy, 2325 Clay St., Murphysboro, IL 62966. This obituary has been placed by Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro.
