Ina Sanders
HERRIN -- Ina Lorene Hernbeck Sanders, 87, went to meet her Lord and Savior and all her other loved ones who have gone on before, at 10:39 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Centerin Herrin. Shawnee Christian Nursing She was born at home to William C. "Pop" and Myrtle "Mom" Hernbeck in Harco on June 10, 1915. She married A. N. "Buster" Sanders on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, l934, in Marion. They were married for 59 years when he passed away Jan. 26, 1994. He had been a Baptist minister for over 50 years. Besides raising five children, she was very talented in many crafts, including China painting in her later years and sewing clothes for her family. She held several jobs in the churches her husband pastored. She had a beautiful alto voice. She sang for the Lord in various groups and sang solos. She served as President of the Herrin Woman's Club and wasActivity Director for Hampton Nursing Home on South 14th Street. She and her husband lived on South 13th in Herrin for almost 50 years. The house was later sold to Herrin Hospital. She was a member of the Christian Life Center in Herrin. While she lived with her daughter she attended Community of Faith Church. Survivors include daughter, Beverly Griffith of Energy; son and daughter in law, Paul Mark and Toni C. Sanders of Herrin; 13 grandchildren, Ken and Lois Hill of Chester, Kyle and Joann Hill of Nashville, Tenn., Bryce and Pam Hill of Chester, Ellen Kay and Bryan Payne of Herrin, Connie and Terry Davie of Herrin, Larry and Christy Sanders of Herrin, Kurt Griffith of Royalton, Brad and Becky Griffith of Herrin, Michele and Mike Bird of Energy, Lael Griffith of Herrin, Melody and Brett Henry of Highland, Mich., Nick and Karen Sanders of Herrin, Matt and Tracy Sanders of Herrin; 26 Great Grandchildren; 12 Great Great Grandchildren; sister, Beulah "Boots" Rushing of Marion, brother and sister in law, Bob and Aline Hernbeck of Herrin; brother and sister in law, Lloyd and Laura Hernbeck of Cambria; brother and sister in law, Don and Beverly Hernbeck of Marion; sister in law, Pauline "Pennie" Hernbeck of Marion and several nieces and nephews. Her parents; husband; one daughter, Norma Jean Hill; two sons, Larry Del Sanders and Dexter Bill Sanders; one brother, William "Bill" L. Hernbeck; three sisters in infancy; one grandson, Blair Hill, and son in law Ray Griffith preceded her in death. Services will be at 11 a.m. today, March 1, 2003, at Johnson Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. The Rev. Ted Pavloff will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy. MOUNT VERNON -- Homer F. Stull, 75, died at 9:53 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, in the St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in the chapel at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Burial will be in the Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A military flag presentation will be conducted by the Chaplain of American Legion Post 141. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Hughley Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Coy Cockrum
SESSER -- Coy I. Cockrum, 79, of Sesser, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2003, at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Fla. He was born in Franklin County on June 2, 1923, the son of Lemuel Franklin and Bertha Leona (Rich) Cockrum. He married Wilma Lee Tucker on Aughust 31, 1942. She survives. Mr. Cockrum along with his wife owned and operated Coy and Wilma's Campground and Bait Shop. He was a World War II veteran, stationed in Iwo Jima. He was the Supervisor of Barren Township for 40 years. Mr. Cockrum was a member of the Hazel Dell Free Will Baptist Church, the Sesser Masonic Lodge, the Sesser VFW and American Legion Posts and the Sesser Kiwanis Club. Mr. Cockrum served on the Sesser Homecoming Committee for several years. He was a member of the Sesser Chamber of Commerce and one of the founders of the Sesser Fire Protection District. Mr. Cockrum served on the Franklin County Board for 22 years and served as a Circuit Clerk for two years. Mr. Cockrum is survived by wife Wilma Cockrum of Sesser; sons, Coy Deon Cockrum and wife Vickee of Benton and Danny Cockrum and wife Annesa of Sesser; daughter, Connie Hammons and husband Larry of Sesser; grandchildren, Larry Don Hammond and wife Janice of West Frankfort, Rich Hammond of Sesser, Scott Cockrum and wife Elizabeth of Jacksonville, Fla., Christopher Cockrum of San Diego, Calif, Gina Borowski and husband Scott of Herrin, Melissa Fawcett of Springfield and Jonathon Ibarra; 13 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Erma Lee Conner and husband Wesley of Benton, Afton Lampley and friend Wayne Gunter of Benton and Mazie Hamilton and friend Larry Overturf of Benton and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Cockrum was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Nancy May and Margaret Fay; one brother, Frank Cockrum; two half sisters, Dorothy Conner and Rada Reynolds and by four half brothers, Clyde Griffin, Loren Griffin, Edgar Griffin and Virgil Griffin. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Hazel Dell Free Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gene Outland officiating. Burial with military rites will by the Sesser VFW and American Legion Posts will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton. Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. today and from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. HERRIN -- Lynn Rae (Boren) Hindman, 66, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at her home. There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated. The family of Mrs. Hindman requests that friends spend time with the one who gives eternal life. Mrs. Hindman was born August 17, 1936, in Herrin to Woodrow Boren and Reba Jean (Talley) Boren. She graduated from Herrin High School in 1954 and attended Southern Illinois University and graduated from the Barnes Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. She is survived by her son, Jay Boren and wife Dee of Orangeville, Calif.; daughters, Kelley and husband Mike Meyer of Newport, Wash. and Tracy Mumey of Herrin; sister, Iva Nell and husband Gene Stiman of Salem; brother, Terry and wife Maria Boren of Rogers, Minn.; grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Hindman of Orangeville, Calif, Michael, Mason and Megan Meyer of Newport, Va. and Eden and Nicole Mumey of Energy; beloved aunt and uncle Mary Belle and Ray Boren of Herrin and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her huband, Bill L. Hindman and her grandparents, Tom and Lillian Boren and Sam and Rudy Talley.
Charlie B. Kelley
WILLIAMSON COUNTY -- Charlie B. Kelley, 89, died at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, in the Village in Cameron, Mo. He was born June 19, 1913, in Williamson County to Charles and Mary Kelley. He married Dorothy Simmons on Dec. 25, 1931. Two children were born to this union. He worked many years at Sangamo Electric in maintenance. When Sangamo closed, he moved to Missouri where he worked for 15 years for Lipton Corp. He retired from Lipton Corp. and purchased apartments, which he owned and maintained for the rest of the 40 years he lived in Missouri. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and their spouses, and 13 great-grandchildren. Children and their spouses are Cecil and Polly Kelley of Independence, Mo., and Kay and Bob Broeking of Marion. Grandchildren, spouses and great-grandchildren are Mike Kelley and Steven of Independence, Mo.; Mary and Bill Williamson of Breckenridge, Colo.; Alicia and Lauri Sindt and sons, Andy, Aaron, Ammon and daughter, Amy of Cameron, Mo.; Kelly and Scott Holland and sons, Derek, Ryan, and Connor Atkisson, Tyler Holland, and daughter, Samantha Holland of Marion; Tim and Darla Broeking and son, Graham and daughter, Lauren Rutland of Marion; and Brent and Jenny Broeking and son, Jackson of Perryville, Mo. His wife, parents, brothers and sisters all preceded him in death. Mr. Kelley was a priest and member in the Community of Christ Church. Mr. Kelley was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Gary Borum
HERRIN -- Gary Dale Borum, 60, of Big Sandy, Tenn., formerly of Herrin died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at his residence in Big Sandy. Gary was born on Feb. 6, 1943, in Herrin to Lloyd and Barbara June (Wells) Borum Jr. He married Virginia Sue McCombs on July 22, 1961. She preceded him in death on May 28, 1991. Mr. Borum retired from Borum's Trucking, Inc. and formerly worked in the coal mines as a heavy equipment operator. Survivors are daughter, Tammy Borum of Herrin; son, Timothy Borum of Herrin; granddaughter of Kelsey Sue Borum of Herrin; close friends Janice and Kenny Mayers and children Cindy, Ryan, and Sara of Hurst; dear neighbors and loving friends and caretakers, John and Teresa Fairburn of Big Sandy, Tenn. and caregivers in Tennessee, Gayla, Lisa and the staff of Benton County Health Care. WEST FRANKFORT -- Barbara A. Henson, age 65, of West Frankfort, died at 5:45 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at the Heartland Medical Center in Marion. She was born Sept. 15, 1937, in Charlotte, N. C. to Henry Clay Sanders and Annie (Smith) Sanders. She married Charles Henson on Dec. 10, 1967, in Georgia and he preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 2003. Survivors include sons, Wes Bennett of West Frankfort, Rick Bennett of Athens, Tenn., Russell and Billy Henson both of West Frankfort; two daughters, Lynne Rivera of Smyrna , Ga., and Angela Henson of West Frankfort; 14 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sisters Viola Taylor, Lillie Long and Louise Sosebee all of Charlotte, N. C. and a brother Ernest Sanders of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles a son Kevin a daughter Susie and 10 brothers and sisters. Barbara was a member of the Church of God . She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and the coordinator for the Bloodmobile and a lieutenant in the Franklin County Civil Defense. One of her favorite activities was teaching first aid , tornado awareness and C. P. R. to the children in the West Frankfort Schools. It was her request to be cremated. Jesse Franklin Lyell
JOHNSTON CITY -- Jesse Franklin Lyell, 81, died at 8:25 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at his family home. Services will be at 1 p.m. today, March 1, 2003, at the Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with the Rev. Larry Stevens officiating. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery
in Herrin. Visitation was Friday at the funeral home. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Marion VFW. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, and envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Jesse was born on Dec. 7, 1921, in Muehlenburg County, Ky., the son of James Clarence and Robbie Ann (Vaught) Lyell. He married Elaine (Hayes) on Jan. 5, 1945, in Marion. She survives. Jesse was retired from Allen Industries in Herrin. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union of America. He was a Veteran of World War II, where he served in the
Army, receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. He was a Baptist. He is survived by three children, Jessica McPhail and husband, Tom, of Zeigler, James A. Lyell of Marion, Jerry Ray Lyell of Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Greg McPhail and wife, Kristi, of Sikeston, Mo., Ronda Moreland and husband, Forrest, of Christopher, Michele Fry and husband, Scott, of Aurora, Jennifer L. Lyell of Louisville, Ky., Casey N. Lyell, Jacob D. Lyell and Amanda Lyell of Johnston City; three great-grandchildren, Victoria Lorraine McPhail, Elizabeth C. McPhail, Alexandria N. He was a Prudential insurance agent in the Murphysboro and Ava area for 30 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Murphysboro and he served as a deacon of the church. He was a member and past exalted ruler of the Elks and he was a member of the American Legion Post No. 127 and the VFW Post No. 7190 in Murphysboro. He was born on Aug. 3, 1916, in Murray, Ky. His parents were Goble Bryan Gipson and Bertha Mabel (Vick) Gipson. He married Barbara Johnson on Aug. 17, 1941, in Centralia. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Gipson of Murphysboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and William Richardson of Round Rock, Texas; four grandchildren, Angela Richardson Burk, W. Trent Richardson, Traci Richardson, Andrea Richardson; four great granddaughters; a brother, Goble Gipson of Dunlap, Tenn.; and a sister, Shirley Bassler of Nashville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by a brother, two sisters, and his parents.
James A. Furgerson
CARBONDALE -- James A. Furgerson, 80, died at 8:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, in Carbondale. He was born in Nortonville, Ky. on April 9, 1922, to Charles and Eula (Whitford) Furgerson. He was married to Dorothy M. Page Feb. 15, 1945, in Bennetville, S. C. He was a World War II veteran of the 11th Airborne Division and a retired US Post Office Mail Carrier. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, VFW, American Legion of Carbondale and the Christian Church of Nortonville, Ky. Mr. Furgerson was an avid fisherman and crafted beautiful wood work that his family cherishes. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Page of Carbondale; his children, Carol and Ron Epperheimer of Carbondale, Marsha and Bob Thompson of De Soto, Lisa and John Milligan of Douglas, Wyo.; a sister Hazel Nance of Mount Vernon; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; a niece and nephew, Don and Ann Rickard, who were like his own children. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Private graveside services will be Monday, March 3, 2003, at Murdale Garden of Memories in Murphysboro, with the Rev. BENTON -- Felix Owens, 89, of Benton died at 4:50 a. m Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at the Enfield Health Care Center. He was born Oct. 17, 1913, in Benton to Edward and Delsia (Melvin) Owens. He married Lorene Carson on Nov. 7, 1937. She preceded him in death May 11, 1988. He was a member of the East Benton Baptist Church. Mr. Owens is survived by two sons, Gerald D. Owens and wife Kaye of Benton and Carroll L. Owens and wife Terri of Benton; grandchildren, Justin Owens of Nashville, Ethan Owens of Carbondale, Marcus Owens and wife Kelli and their daughter, Matalin, Evan Owens and wife Sheryl and their children, Tyler and Eldon and Kent Owens and wife Christy and their children, Chase and Crew; three sisters, Margaret Baysinger of Marion, Helen Gaskel of Benton and Bluebell Tate of Benton; one brother, Frank Owens and wife Geri of Herrin; five nieces and eight nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister and one nephew. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Morton and Johnson Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Betty McSpadden
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS -- Betty Jean (Carter) McSpadden, 66, of Independence, Mo., passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at her home. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Park Lawn Funeral Home Chapel in Independence, Mo. Friends may visit the family from 2 to 3 p.m. at the chapel. A private burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu fo flowers, memorials may be made to the Sterling Acres Baptist Church. Betty was born Oct. 2, 1936 in DuQuoin and had lived most of her life in Southern Illinois before moving to Missouri five years ago. She was a member of the Sterling Acres Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Richard; a daughter, Cheri Titsworth of Independence, Mo.; a son, Tim McSpadden of Humble, Texas; brother, Noah of Pickneyville; two sisters, Janet Baize of Herrin and Dorothy Metcalf of Tamaroa ; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Kathy Reeves
COBDEN -- Kathy Ann Flamm Reeves, 51 of Selah, Wash., formerly of Cobden, died at 8:30 p. m., July 22, 2003, at Oregon Health Science University Hospital in Portland, Ore. She was born Jan. 17, 1952, in Anna, the daughter of Edwin A. And Mary Clutts Flamm. She married John Thomas Reeves Aug. 29, 1970. He survives. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cobden and St. Paul's Cathedral in Yakima, Wash. Kathy graduated from Cobden High School in 1970. While in high school she was a member of the Beta Club, the Honor Society and was the president of the marching band for two years. She was interested in all athletics and was the captain of the cheerleading squad. She was on the newspaper staff, belonged to chorus, FHA and was voted best-dressed. She was the Cobden Peach Festival Queen in 1969. After high school she completed three years of college and was an administrative secretary for several hospitals as she and "Tom" traveled and completed their educations and entered the workforce. She was a devoted wife, mother and daughter, as she raised her family and lived to see Amanda marry and Julia graduate from high school. She and Tom have been sweethearts since 5th grade. Her hobbies included antiquing, camping, traveling short trips and enjoyed cooking for family dinners. She was a regular blood donor and hospital volunteer. Kathy fought cancer for seven years. The family has peace in that she fought the fight as well as possible and all was done on her behalf and by her family that was entirely possible. She is survived by her husband John Thomas Reeves of Selah, Wash.; two children, Amanda Renae and husband Jason Perraul of Selah, Wash., and Julia Aylene Reeves also of Selah, Wash.; two grandchildren, Mikaela Reeves and Joshua Perrault; her father, Edwin Flamm of Cobden; two brothers, Larry E. Flamm and Alan J. Flamm both of Cobden; other relatives and many friends. Services for Mrs. Kathy Flamm Reeves will be held at 10 a. m., Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cobden with Father Jim Dougherty officiating. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery

MARION -- Esther Richey, 93, went home to be with her Lord at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Parkway Manor in Marion. Esther was born April 04, 1910, in Williamson County to Pierce and Bertha Mae (Manier) Richey. Esther was a homemaker. Esther was a lifetime member of the Coal Bank Springs Church where she taught Sunday School for 22 years. Survivors include a nephew and his fiance Larry Jochum and Linda Davis of Pittsburg; two great-nephews, Brian Jochum and Johnny Jochum; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Eva (Jochum) Barter; and one brother, Wayman Richey. COULTERVILLE -- Cynthia S. Rude, 54, of Coulterville, formerly of Christopher, passed away at 1:23 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2003, in St. Elizabeth's Hospital of Belleville. Cynthia was born April 17, 1949, in Christopher, the daughter of Guy Quinton Rice and Betty Mae Biggs Rice. Due to the death of her parents she was reared by her grandparents, Clyde and Sylvia Biggs of Mulkeytown, from the age of 3 years. She was united in marriage to Richard E. Rude in Ridgeland, S. C., on Oct. 4, 1968, and he survives. She was a member of the Winkle Baptist Church in Winkle, a graduate of Christopher High School, class of 1967, a Girl Scout leader for numerous years and worked for Bridal Originals in Sparta. Survivors include her husband Richard of Coulterville; son and daughter-in-law, Richard Joseph and Brandi Rude of Coulterville; four daughters and two sons-in-laws, Tamara Sue Boyster of Coulterville, Jennifer Ann Rude Little of New Athens, Betsy Marie and Larry Szostak of Coulterville, Rikki Jo and Quentin Rae of Sullivan; sister and brother-in-law, Debra "Debbie" Bowlin and Hobert Bowlin of Collinsville; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Ann Rude of Springfield; 13 grandchildren, along with numerous other relatives and friends.
